I have just taken a call Sheldon Bonner, who was until recently Head Groundsman at St Peter's School in York. We featured Sheldon and St Peters in an early issue of Turf Matters.
Sheldon had to step down from his role a couple of years ago having being diagnosed with an illness which sadly turned out to be terminal and when he called he was about to return home having spent a period of rest bite care in a Leeds Hospice following a couple of falls.
Despite this Sheldon was in good form and sounding strong.
What he wanted to do was paid tribute to St Peters School and the incredible kindness and support they had shown him since being taken ill. The school had even sought special permission to allow Sheldon to marry in the School Chapel recently.
"The school and all the staff have been wonderful to me and I wanted to make people in the industry aware of it. All too often we are quick to talk about people and employers and what they haven't done so it is important to give praise where it is due."
I know that everyone who knows him, and indeed the turf management family as a whole, will want Sheldon to know that our thoughts are with him and his family.
