South Beds reaps financial benefits

Featuring both 18 and 9-hole courses based on free-draining chalk land in Bedfordshire, South Beds Golf Club is now on its fourth generation of John Deere greens mower, following a John Deere Financial lease deal signed with dealer P Tuckwell Ltd.

The new 2500E hybrid electric greens mower followed its triplex predecessors the 2500, 2500A and 2500B models in a package agreed with general manager Richard Martin and course manager Tom Hooper. It was joined by a John Deere 8800A rough mower, 7700A fairway mower and 3045R compact tractor, plus a Tru-Turf greens roller and a Saxon LM180 triple mower.

Richard Martin had been in his role for just over a year when he realised that the club had to try and find a way of limiting the amount of time the greens staff were having to spend fixing old, worn out equipment. He and Tom Hooper worked together with Tuckwell to identify the machines required to maintain the course to a higher standard, as well as a finance deal that the club would be comfortable with.

“The club committee pretty much backed us straight away once we proved we had got our facts and figures correct and that the finances were manageable,” says Richard. “The leasing solution was the first time we had tried a different approach to buying machinery – it would have been bought outright before.

“The John Deere finance deal gave us six new machines, which put us back where we wanted to be in terms of the course maintenance fleet. With the speed of change in new technology, you can fall behind very quickly in terms of its benefits. With this new deal we decided that leasing would be the better option, and it enabled us to make an immediate improvement to the course presentation.

“The cost of maintenance and repair was a big issue before, with some of the older machines 10 or more years old. The new rough mower replaced two old machines, so now we can manage both the rough and semi-rough much more quickly and easily, as it’s so easy to change the height of cut.

“The 2500E is the club’s first hybrid electric mower – we had problems in the past with hydraulic leaks on the greens, so that’s been taken out of the equation now. The TechControl system on the new A Model mowers is a very nice feature too – it enables Tom to be in control of setting the mowing and turning circle speeds, for more consistent results across both courses. The Quick Adjust cutting units on the cylinder mowers also save a lot of time when changing cutting heights.

“Overall I really believe this has been a great statement of intent by the club,” says Richard. “We wanted to improve the quality of the course presentation, the club recognised that and did something about it, and we are now reaping the benefits.”

Top Safety Accreditation for Duralock UK LTD

Duralock UK has been awarded accreditation from Alcumus SafeContractor for achieving excellence in health and safety in the workplace.

Alcumus SafeContractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises extremely rigorous standards in health and safety management amongst contractors. It is used by thousands of organisations in the UK from SMEs to FTSE 100 companies.

Duralock is principally involved in the PVC fencing sector, specialising in the Equine and Sports industries, with a £3 million turnover. Duralock’s most recent clients have included major players such as Ascot Racecourse, Epsom Downs Racecourse and the RFU.

The company’s application for SafeContractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business. SafeContractor accreditation will enhance the company’s ability to win new contracts, and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal.

“Major organisations simply cannot afford to run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies in place. More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that Duralock has done. The firm’s high standard has set an example which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector.” – Gemma Archibald, Director of Alcumus SafeContractor

Production & Installation Manager Jack Green, who was instrumental in ensuring Duralock worked towards the accreditation said: “We are thrilled to have been approved by the SafeContractor scheme. Safety is paramount in every stage of the production process and it makes sense that we take the same level of care when it comes to our installations. At Duralock, we strive to be at the forefront of new technologies and processes and feel that this accreditation can only add to our already excellent reputation.”

GreenMech Again For Arboreco

Leicestershire based Arboreco carry out a range of tree and hedge works for both domestic and commercial customers. With such differing projects the company needs a fleet of chipping machinery capable of getting into small and restricted spaces, as well as man enough for large site clearance projects. Already owning a GreenMech QuadChip 160, Director Eddie Litchfield turned again to GreenMech again to purchase a smaller machine – a new MK II Arborist 130 unit.

“Although both machines are used for day to day arb work,” explained Eddie, “thanks to its weight and manoeuvrability the Arborist 130 suits itself to smaller, city jobs such as work in customer’s back gardens – though it’s more than capable to deal with larger work. All of our guys are on a post-97 license so the weight being 670kg is a big factor for us meaning they can tow the unit. Anything above that is an expensive pain! The QuadChip is generally used on the bigger jobs where you have more volume of stuff to process but again it’s under the 750kg weight limit which suits us well. It’ll take some serious volume of material – it punches way above its output for the weight class it’s in.”

Arboreco have always used GreenMech machines and been really pleased with them. When it came to adding another chipper to their fleet they were particularly impressed by the new features added onto the ever-popular Arborist 130 model. The MK II units include a new folding table; bottom control bar; all new infeed touch controls; led lights – even a new livery!

Eddie again, “The sales and back-up support has always been the best. We purchased this latest machine through local dealer Global Sales at the ARB Show. They, along with our local GreenMech rep Peter Bagguley, have always looked after us and having them at the end of the phone for after sales support and advice is great. It really is this level of service, along with the performance of the machines, that’s kept us loyal to the GreenMech brand.”

Ipswich School Sports New TYM Tractor

Sport is an integral part of every day life for the students of Ipswich School in Suffolk and keeping the grounds, which is home to some of the country’s sporting successes of the future, in first-class condition is no small job. But making that job easier is a new TYM T433 tractor.

The school has four superb sporting venues, including the new Ipswich School Sports Centre at Rushmere, as well as Eton Fives courts, squash courts and an indoor swimming pool on the main school site. With surfaces catering for rugby, boys’ and girls’ cricket, athletics, football, hockey, netball and tennis, head groundsman Martyn Cull says it’s a demanding job to keep the school ‘play-ready’, which is why a TYM T433 tractor was welcomed onto the grounds at the start of this year.

Chosen for its price and quality, Martyn says the TYM “impressed” in both areas: “We tried a variety of tractors and the T433 stood out from the rest because of its quality and ability to maintain and improve the school’s sport surfaces. It meets our needs perfectly and also happens to have a very comfortable cab size.”

As well as getting “a lot of tractor for your money”, Martyn says another factor in his decision to choose TYM was his relationship with TYM’s UK distributor Reesink Turfcare. “We know we can trust Reesink to deliver a great service; we’ve built a good relationship with our sales representative Danny Lake over the years. He understands the demands of the school and can advise on what will work best for the requirements we have.”

The tractor was primarily purchased to pull a Toro SR72 aerator across its many sites to relieve soil compaction and improve drainage, making turf healthier, helping it recover from compaction quicker and bringing it back into play faster. TYM is, says Reesink, the perfect choice when working alongside Toro equipment and the design of the SR72 makes life easy by allowing tine depth to be adjusted without changing the angle of entry. By using the hydraulic top link from the tractor while the machine is in use, the operator can apply the ideal tine position for every soil type and condition, without leaving their seat.

But with a range of features and attachments available, the T433 is so versatile it can be put to almost any task and Martyn and his five-strong groundskeeping team have found its optional attachments, such as the front loader and bucket, especially useful for moving vast quantities of soil and leaves. Having also opted for the snowplough attachment, Martyn says with this the TYM could “prove to be a real life-saver in the winter.”

The T433 is a middleweight, fuel-efficient compact tractor, which comes with a 43hp engine and boasts an impressive 1500kg lift capacity. While the tractor is economical to run, it doesn’t compromise on performance and that’s a good thing as it will be in use a lot over the coming months as the school prepares for various friendly competitions and two Suffolk county cricket matches this summer.

Ipswich School pupils feature regularly in county, regional and national sports finals, and sports scholarships are offered by the school to recognise sporting potential. The school is co-educational with just over 1000 pupils, aged from 3 to 18, and has been on the main Henley Road site in Ipswich since 1852. The school is proud of its passion for education, and for the opportunities it offers for pupils to develop their learning, both in the classroom and through an exciting range of co-curricular activities including music, drama and, of course, sport.

Boost For Grassroots Football

Grassroots football in Durham is set to benefit from a £630,000 investment at the site of a former college.

Durham County Council has been awarded £293,000 by the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund, which is delivered by the Football Foundation, to build a new community football hub.

Work has started on a changing facility, refurbishment of the artificial grass pitch and replacement of security fencing to protect the existing grass pitches at the former Roseberry College site in Newfield, Chester le Street.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Congratulations should go to Durham County Council for working with Durham FA to secure this Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund grant.

“The foundation awards grants towards grassroots sports projects with money generously provided by our funders: the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England.”

Further funds have been provided via capital receipts from housing developments at Sandyford Place, Newfield Farm and Thorntons Close, in addition to Durham County Council match funding.

County Councillors Colin Carr and Alison Batey have supported the project with contributions of £20,000 each from their Neighbourhood Budgets.
