Assistant Greenkeeper – Berkhamsted Golf Club
The Opportunity
Berkhamsted Golf Club is a prestigious, inclusive, and golf-focused club with a proud history dating back to 1890. Situated within 520 acres of stunning heathland on Berkhamsted Common, the club is renowned for its natural and sustainable approach to golf course management. The course retains the original charm of its James Braid, Willie Park, and Harry Colt design, with no man-made hazards, making it truly unique.
We are seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Greenkeeper to join our dedicated team. This is an exciting opportunity to work at one of England’s Top 100 courses, renowned for its pristine playing surfaces, commitment to sustainability, and rich connection with nature.
Key Responsibilities
Course Maintenance & Presentation

Assist in the daily maintenance and presentation of the course to the highest standards

Support the club’s sustainable approach to course management, preserving the natural heathland environment

Operate and maintain greenkeeping machinery and equipment

Work closely with the Course Manager and greenkeeping team to deliver outstanding playing conditions

Contribute to ongoing projects such as management of the mounds, surround, and drainage improvements, woodland management, and heather regeneration

Adhere to all health and safety procedures, ensuring safe working practices at all times

Maintain accurate records for pesticide and fertilizer applications under the direction of senior staff

NVQ in Sports Turf Management (or equivalent qualification)

Previous experience working as part of a greenkeeping team

A passion for maintaining high-quality playing surfaces and a strong work ethic

Knowledge of sustainable and environmentally friendly turf management practices

Ability to work effectively within a team and independently when required

Experience working on heathland or other naturalistic courses

Familiarity with irrigation systems, machinery operation, and maintenance

PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates (or willingness to obtain them)

A proactive and detail-oriented approach to your work

A commitment to delivering excellence in course presentation and maintenance

Strong communication and interpersonal skills
