Technology leads Surbiton’s new Toro fleet

Technology leads Surbiton’s new Toro fleet: In its latest Toro fleet deal with Reesink Turfcare, Surbiton Golf Club has invested for the first time in environmentally friendly technology with two Greensmaster 3360 hybrid mowers and accessed the industry’s newest spraying technology with the GeoLink system.

Course Manager Andrew Kerr says the reasons for these choices are progressive as well as practical: “We’ve been evolving and adapting to golf technology and the needs of golfers since we began, and this is the next step. We’ve noticed in recent years that members use Surbiton as a destination location, to enjoy the environment it provides, not just for playing golf.

“With reduced emissions and lower operating noise these mowers contribute to creating a better and more relaxed place to be. And for the same reasons, are pleasing to the residents around us.” The benefits don’t stop there though, Andrew is also noticing a significant reduction in fuel consumption too.

Based on the outskirts of Southwest London, Surbiton Golf Club is one of the first clubs to take advantage of the latest GeoLink spray system, further helping with club efficiencies.

“The level of accuracy it provides you just wouldn’t be able to achieve manually no matter how good or experienced the operator,” he says. “It’s reducing how much product we use and lowering our costs because we’re only using what we need to, there’s no wastage. We don’t have square greens or fairways here and that had made spraying tricky but now we cover every inch with no over or under spraying.”

Andrew has noticed a big difference in the presentation and quality of the grass since using the GeoLink: “We don’t overdose and the grass is as plump as possible, which members love. They perceive the general standard of the course to be improved as a result.”

Also included in the order are two Groundsmaster 3500-D with Sidewinders, seven Greensmaster 1021 pedestrian mowers, two Reelmaster 3575-D fairway mowers and a Groundsmaster 4700-D rough mower in what is the club’s second Toro fleet deal.

“We got our last fleet about six years ago and we would usually replace it after five years, but we’ve been waiting for the machines to be available,” explains Andrew. “What we’ve noticed in the interim is that with the quality and longevity of Toro and the support of Reesink this hasn’t been a problem. We’ve had a Reesink technician come onsite for a day every two weeks and that’s kept maintenance and machinery performance up to standard.”

Andrew and his team of nine have found all the machines involved in the order deliver to their specific presentation requirements: “Our members love striped greens and complexes and having the combination of the cylinders and Sidewinders makes delivering eye catching stripes easy.”

Worth Park’s Wildflower Meadows Come to Life

Worth Park’s Wildflower Meadows Come to Life: In 2022, Euroflor Flower Seed from Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) transformed three meadow areas within Worth Park as part of a wider conservation project underway by Crawley Borough Council.

Worth Park sits within 8.5 hectares of green space, which has undergone a complete restoration over the last few years, making it an important community and destination venue for residents and visitors to Crawley. This experimental meadow has now been turned into works of art by a nonagenarian painter Beryl Hovell. Beryl has tracked the development of the park’s meadow area over the past three years. She created her first artwork in 2022, at the age of 90, and has recently completed her third painting. All three paintings are on display in the Community Room at Worth Park.

Beryl explains, “I saw the newly seeded wildflower meadow at Worth Park in 2022. What a lovely, colourful sight. As an artist, it inspired me, and once that vision was in my head, I had to paint it on canvas. A year later, I painted it again. It was interesting to see the differences and variations in growth, flowers, and colours. In 2024, I saw it for the third time. Now, there were more grasses and fewer flowers. When the wind caught the grasses, I loved the movement and tried to capture it in the painting with small dots of colour emerging. A photograph can capture one view, but an artist can condense a number of views into one and inject a feeling of movement that a camera cannot.”

Councillor Chris Mullins, Cabinet member for Leisure and Wellbeing at Crawley Borough Council adds, “Worth Park is a wonderful place, and Beryl’s paintings really capture the beauty of the wildflower meadow. I’m grateful to Beryl for allowing us to display her artwork in the park for visitors to enjoy.”

Head Gardener and Curator at Worth Park Stephen Peters first introduced the wildflowers to increase plant diversity and provide an essential habitat and food for pollinators. He used OAS’s biodegradable matting, FloraFleece, which helped deliver maximum visual and ecological benefit with minimal environmental impact.

Stephen concludes, “It has been a real pleasure seeing Beryl’s works of art that have followed the progress of our wildflower meadow using FloraFleece in the last three years. These paintings now hang proudly for all to see and admire. Not only do they demonstrate the evolution of the meadow but also the brilliance of the artist who captured it. At the same time, it reminds us of the beauty of meadows and how important they are for the environment and its biodiversity.”

Jacobsen SLF530 tames tricky ‘rig and furrow’ with ease

Jacobsen SLF530 tames tricky ‘rig and furrow’ with ease: For golfers, ‘ridge and furrow’ adds both visual impact and added challenge to a course. The previous plough lines with their raised ridges and sunken furrows, bring a little more theatre to the game and give a historic nod to the past.

Strathaven Golf Club, in South Lanarkshire, has three fairways – the 6th, 10th and 11th– all of which boast deep and dramatic undulations.

After finding some mowers less than successful at dealing with their rise and fall, Steve Hunter, Head Greenkeeper, has purchased a Jacobsen SLF530 from Scottish dealer, Fairways GM at Renfrew.

“This machine is all about extra care for tees and aprons and undulating fairways. It follows the line down into them so much better and doesn’t leave any missed bits. The smaller cutting heads, the way it floats and pivots, just help give it a cleaner cut and all-over smooth finish.

“Other machines are a little faster but the benefit of the SLF530 is the quality and definition to the surfaces. It’s out once a week now, but twice a week minimum in the summer,” he said.

Stuart Cameron, Area Sales Manager from Fairways GM was on hand to advise, deliver and install the machine.

The team at Strathaven GC, comprises five qualified greenkeepers and two apprentices. In 2023, the team won the BIGGA Greenkeeping Project of the Year award.

Meldrum House equipped to withstand wetter winters

Meldrum House equipped to withstand wetter winters: Meldrum House have become the latest golf course in a rapidly growing list to praise the versatility and effective aeration delivered by a Carrier and Verti-Drain® 1513 from Redexim.

Delivered in June 2024 by HRN Tractors, the combination has already been put through its paces, hollow coring the greens and handling the undulations of the site with ease, as Golf Course and Grounds Manager Kenny Harper looks to increase aeration to better withstand increasingly wetter winters.

This latest purchase is part of major ongoing investment by the new owners of Meldrum House, Apex Hotels Ltd, as they look to build on the course’s reputation as one of the finest facilities in Scotland – nestled into the parkland surroundings of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. That claim means that client expectations are high when it comes to course condition, with Kenny supported by a team of ten on the year-round maintenance. “Last winter was one of the wettest on record which is making most elements of our job more difficult and means operations like aeration are more important than ever” Kenny explains.

“We tried all makes and models of tractor mounted aerator then contacted HRN Tractors, who we know quite well, about the Redexim Carrier and Verti-Drain®. HRN’s Wilson Morrison, together with Allen Whellans from Redexim, were both on the ball from the very first phone call. They arrived on time and the demonstration was impressive – the build quality in particular filled us all with the confidence that the machines are going to last. Ticking all the boxes, we took delivery in June and are so happy with our decision.”

He continues, “The variation in working depth, together with the range of tine options available, is something we really like and gives us much greater versatility and flexibility than our previous aeration set-up. We’ve already hollow cored with 8mm tines and can swap these for solid tines and work down to depths of six inches which we’ve not been able to do before and will significantly improve our greens drainage.”

The Verti-Drain® 1513 offers high-speed, low disturbance aeration. Paired up with the Redexim Carrier, the combination offers a lightweight solution for annual maintenance on sensitive turf areas such as golf greens. “The Carrier is powered by a 31hp engine so we’ve effectively gained a power unit which we can use with a range of implements. It’s also fantastic and easy to control over the contours on our site.”

“This was our first experience of Redexim and we went into it with a ‘nothing ventured’ attitude but we’ve definitely ‘gained’ an incredibly versatile set-up and hopefully the course and the members will all gain too as a result” he concludes.
