SALTEX 2018 Voted The Best Yet

SALTEX 2018 Voted The Best Yet: The post-show visitor survey from SALTEX 2018 has revealed that an overwhelming amount of attendees believed the 2018 show was the best and most vibrant to date.

SALTEX at the NEC, Birmingham has again proved to be the annual meeting place for the UK and European groundscare industries. Only at SALTEX does the industry have the opportunity to experience a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and innovations in groundscare and to find out about the capabilities of this sector.

SALTEX 2018 Voted The Best Yet

Following two days of networking, education and innovation, the 73rd SALTEX exhibition closed with an independently audited, visitor total of 8,902.

Visitors attended from 44 different countries and according to the findings of this year’s visitor survey, these attendees included grounds personnel, greenkeepers, landscapers and contractors.

The event organisers are very pleased to hear that 90 per cent of visitors, who took part in the survey, were successful in meeting their show objectives and equally as many rated their overall show experience as either very good or excellent and no less than 90 per cent of visitors have already put SALTEX 2019 into their diaries, which takes place at the NEC from 30-31 October.

Survey respondents said that their top priorities for attending were to source new products/services and suppliers (79 per cent) and discover new innovations (77 per cent).

More than 47 per cent used their visit for professional development by attending show features such as the Learning LIVE education programme, Ask the Expert and the Job Clinic.

More than half of the survey respondents held a leading or management position at their respective companies, with 84 per cent either having sole responsibility for purchasing or contributed to the process. In addition, 65 per cent had the ability to sign-off on amounts up to £50,000 and 12 per cent had the ability to sign-off on amounts of more than £500,000.

The survey findings also revealed that SALTEX visitors had very specific interests: almost 80 per cent attended to find out more about machinery, power and hand tools for their daily work and nearly half of the visitors were interested in seed, turf and aggregates. More than 38 per cent of visitors wanted to see exhibitors representing both sport surfaces and facilities and landscaping materials. Other areas of interest included: arboriculture, horticulture and forestry (37 per cent); commercial vehicles, tyres and trailers (33 per cent); synthetic turf (24 per cent) and security, personal protection, health and safety (18 per cent).

Vic Demain, head groundsman at Durham CCC, believes that the show is well attended because it caters for everyone in the industry: “I consider SALTEX to be the best show in the industry and it is ideal for everyone to come to, whether you are a volunteer, a professional or an international groundsman – there is something for everyone,” he said.

For Adam Witchell, head groundsman at Forrest Green Rovers FC, attending SALTEX provides him with a great opportunity to continue his learning. “For me it’s all about education. I love the seminars and here at SALTEX I’m learning lots of things from great people in this industry. It is a fantastic event, there is some absolutely brilliant machinery on display and a good range of exhibitors.”

Alison Saxby, estate team leader at Workington Town Council also thought the opportunity to enhance her knowledge was a top priority for attending SALTEX: “I like the live talks because they keep you abreast of the current regulations and new innovations,” she said.

With the NEC being located in the centre of the UK and boasting fantastic travel links, it is no wonder that 85 per cent rated the accessibility of the venue as excellent. Stuart Kerrison, head groundsman at Essex CCC said: “The NEC is so easy to get to. I attended to look at a couple of new machines because this is where you see all of the latest innovations. Anyone who attends SALTEX gets so much from it – from viewing new products, attending seminars and networking,” he said.

Benjamin Imamovic, assistant groundsman at FK Željezničar Sarajevo, believed that his journey to SALTEX was certainly worthwhile.

“It’s awesome; I came all the way from Bosnia and Herzegovina to see all of the new machines and learn something new and I am amazed.”

SALTEX 2019 takes place at the NEC, Birmingham on October 30 and 31.

Intelligent Marking At SALTEX 2018

Intelligent Marking At SALTEX 2018: Danish company, Intelligent Marking, is ready to introduce the world’s most advanced robotic line marker and it’s PROSTRIPE line of field paint to the sports turf industry at Saltex 2018 on stand CO10 and at the Live Demonstration area.

The Intelligent One (IO) has led the field in accuracy, reliability and ease of use since being released in 2016 and was awarded the Saltex Innovation Award in 2017 when it was first presented to the UK market. Since then it has seen further advancements to its GPS system and software to maintain its industry leading specification.

Intelligent Marking At SALTEX 2018

The PROSTRIPE field paint has been carefully formulated to match the requirements of every type of customer, including Premier League venues. It is currently being used to great effect by our American customers, including grass-root clubs, professional sports teams and universities. It comes as a ready-to-spray (RTS) paint in three variations: permanent grass paint, semi-permanent for artificial grass and easily removeable chalk-based paint. Each variant comes in white, blue, yellow and red as standard, with other bespoke colours on request.

The robots unrivalled accuracy comes from the base station. Intelligent Marking is the only company to provide an optional base station which allows the machine to be operated without a costly annual subscription and without cellular or real time kinematic (RTK) connectivity and coverage. Using the closed system means the machine can be used anywhere with unprecedented reliability whilst matching the marking speed of every robotic line marker on the market.

The accuracy of markings is millimetric and makes overmarking lines quick and easy with no external signal factors able to impact the performance. The Intelligent One comes with several pre-loaded templates including UEFA regulation football pitches, NFL pitches, track and field marking, rugby union and league, lacrosse and many more. Customers can also request custom templates from Intelligent Marking which can be made within a short timeframe ready for use.

Massive savings in paint cost and manpower are being seen by current users of the IO, including Paul Floyd, Facilities and Operations Manager for the City of Decatur, Alabama, Parks and Recreation Department.

Before using the robot, Paul would use 60 litres of 50/50 mix (28 litres paint) to mark two full-size soccer fields with a three-man crew, taking 30-45 minutes per pitch and one hour starting from scratch.

With the IO these figures reduced dramatically. Up to 34 minutes were saved marking per pitch and 26 litres less paint was needed, figures that Paul thought would be unattainable before using the robot for himself.

He said: “Obviously, everyone paints fields with different paint rates, various numbers of crew and time – but there is clearly a huge cost saving. I know these numbers may seem unbelievable and I was sceptical myself, but we have been using this machine since March 2018 and these are our numbers. We are estimating a savings of £15,500 in just paint cost – not including manpower time savings and less time correcting mistakes. The paint is lasting after multiple mowing sessions and longer than the paint we used previously. We like it so much, we plan to buy a second machine this fall.”

Visitors to Saltex can see the Intelligent One in action at the Live Demonstration area located outside the main building and have any questions answered about the robot and paint at the Intelligent Marking stand.

Demon At SALTEX 2018

With the ever-increasing demands on noise and emissions, Demon International are again leading the way in green cleaning. Current restrictions within the capital and other cities in the UK will make the use of standard diesel and petrol driven machines harder. Using LPG meets the needs to reduce noise and emissions to an acceptable level with minimal cost implications.

GKB At SALTEX 2018

GKB At SALTEX 2018: GKB will be heading to the NEC for Saltex with a formidable line-up of their natural, synthetic and hybrid turf machinery. From brushing and cleaning artificial turf to tackling surface drainage and aeration, infill removal and sand spreading, there’s a smooth GKB machine to do the job efficiently, accurately and in less time for higher productivity.

The now well-known Combinator combines fraise mowing and verticutting grass areas, typically sports turf, while removing and loading the complete upper layer of unwanted turf.

Introduced at the show is a new hybrid blade option for the Combinator, for use on stitched, carpeted and hybrid grass.

GKB At SALTEX 2018

Quick Clean is a threepoint CAT I/II PTO operated machine for quick and thorough cleaning of artificial turf, sweeping up leaves, branches and dirt in a single pass. It uses a depth adaptable brush and shaking screen system to deposit dirt into a waste bin.

The GKB Rotobrush RB120 is designed to rejuvenate and maintain sports field artificial turf and help keep it in top condition. Dirt collecting between the fibres encourages algae growth and reduces drainage, causing deterioration. The Rotobrush offers a quick and easy method of removing dirt in a single pass, with a closed deck to prevent loss of collected infill material, to bring a heavily compacted surface back to life.

The multiple-operation GKB Ecodresser can be described as the ultimate machine for the maintenance of the sports pitch or golf course. In just one operation, multiple operations are combined. The turf is intensively aerated (20 cm deep) by means of the combination of cutting discs, coulters and fixed tines. At the same time as the dressing is applied to the upper layer the sub layer is aerated. You can level imperfections in your pitch by carrying the recycled dressing then scatter it in the desired place. This also creates excellent seeding conditions, improved drainage and enhances the development of rooting.

Problems with a compacted synthetic turf pitch, such as compacted infill responsible for a reduced water permeability, is dealt with by the GKB Renovator. Five rotating brushes quickly deal with the problem, leaving infill material on the pitch to be brushed in using the quick brush.

GKB At SALTEX 2018

A fast, efficient way of seeding and surface aerating with virtually no surface disturbance is achieved using the GKB Combiseeder. Creating over 1500 holes per m² it provides accurate seed application at various rates to suit different seed mixes, with drag brushes to incorporate seed and topdressing. The Combiseeder can be used for overseeding and initial seeding and offers a fast and efficient way of seeding and surface aerating, with virtually no surface disturbance. There’s a large seed hopper with agitator brush and you get accurate seed distribution from all seed mixes. There are models from 1.2m to 2.1m and there are options of a multi spike cast ring roller or Cambridge roll cast ring roller. The GKB range is on Stand H051 at Saltex.

2018 Mowing Season Starts Later

2018 Mowing Season Starts Later: A survey by lawnmower manufacturer Cub Cadet has found that the 2018 lawnmowing season started over three weeks later than it did in 2017.

The results found that the most popular day for the first mow of the lawn in 2017 was the 26th March, whereas this year it was the 19th April – 24 days later.

2018 Mowing Season Starts Later

This year, England had the wettest March since 1981 with an average rainfall of 102.2mm, and the UK as a whole had its wettest March in a decade with 104.44mm on average. This was followed by a mini-heatwave in mid-April which saw some of the highest temperatures in April since 1949 – a combination which inevitably caused lawns to have a growth spurt and spark the starting of lawnmowers across the country.

The lawnmowing season survey campaign was launched last year as part of Cub Cadet’s ongoing project into assessing the impact of changing weather patterns on lawns, and this is the first set of comparable year-on-year data that has come from the project. The survey is an annual project that will assess the long-term impact of the weather on UK lawns, as well as looking at the short-term effects it can have in delaying the start of the season.

Discussing the results, Phil Noble, Sales and Technical Manager for Cub Cadet UK, said: “Sales  discussions within the industry suggested that the season had started later this year so it’s interesting to see this reiterated by our survey data. There have been many contributing factors and it’s not entirely surprising that people started mowing later when you consider the extreme and varied weather we had earlier in the year with the Beast from the East followed by an unusually warm April combined with lots of rainfall.”

“The weather was really varied – if we didn’t know what the weather was doing, it’s not surprising that the grass didn’t! We now wait for the data from the close of the survey later in the year to see if the whole season has shifted.”

The earliest first mow was as early as the 3rd January, with the latest being reported on 13th May.

The 2018 ClearWater Cup

The 2018 ClearWater Cup: The annual ClearWater Cup took place recently at Corhampton Golf Club with The South Coast Greenkeepers playing The Wessex Managers.

The club is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and aims to provide members and guests with a quality golfing experience within a friendly and welcoming environment. All lived up to expectations and the greenkeeping team could be justifiably proud of the course. The excellent weather was an added bonus!

The 2018 ClearWater Cup

Highcliffe Castle’s Mike Cartwright captained the Greenkeepers and Barton on Sea’s Sean Trussel captained the Managers and a hard fought event took place; the mangers keen to take the cup from the greenkeepers!

Despite everyone’s best efforts, however, the match ended in a draw and so the Greenkeepers retained the trophy!

An enjoyable meal followed and Acumen ClearWater’s Matthew Mears presented the cup. Thanks were made for Acumen ClearWater’s sponsorship and to those involved in organising the event, hosting, preparing the course and, of course, the meal.

The 2018 ClearWater Cup

Congratulations South Coast Greenkeepers; maybe next year the Managers will prise the cup from them?
