Origin create a buzz at SALTEX 2022

Origin create a buzz at SALTEX 2022: The Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) team has declared SALTEX a successful show. It ended on a high with their stand being announced as the Stand Award Winner by the GMA. They were voted the best in the large spaces category due to the excellence in stand design and customer experience.

Speaking about their experience OAS Marketing Director Kate Humes commented, “This was our first major show under the new marketing stewardship, and we were delighted with how it went. There was an impressive turn out with high profile visitors and exhibitors old and new.  The Origin Amenity Solutions stand was buzzing from the minute the doors opened. It was well organised and provided an ideal platform to catch up with customers, suppliers, and industry friends. Winning the Best Stand was the icing on the cake.  A lot of work goes into designing and building a stand of this scale and it was nice to be recognised for the team’s efforts.”

Origin Amenity Solutions combines four major industry brands – Headland Amenity, Rigby Taylor, Symbio and Turfkeeper. The group was established just over a year ago and their impressive presence at SALTEX demonstrates their commitment to the industry and positions them as a leading force in amenity and grounds management.

The stand was a hive of activity with live demonstrations of the Beacon application, the newest feature of the digital Turfkeeper platform offering push-notifications direct to mobile devices.  One visitor commented, “This is a fantastic new feature. Just what I needed.  It means I can keep my eyes on the jobs and my teams workload while I’m away from my desk. Simple but brilliant.”

The new Tiny Pro X robotic line marker made its debut appearance at the show and was incredibly well received.  Kate continues, “there was so much interest in the GPS Tiny Mobile Robots range and particularly the most recently launched robot, the Tiny Pro X.  We actually sold three machines on the stand which was cause for celebration.”

Elsewhere on the stand Dr Deidre Charleston profiled Symbio’s compost tea packages that are specially formulated using Symbio’s composting microbial technology. Many visitors to the OAS stand viewed the microbes in HD highlighting the types of microbes present after different brewing lengths.

Not just restricted to their stand, Research & Development Director Geoff Fenn and Angus Finlayson, OAS Turf Trials Research Manager took to the seminar area to explain about the Origin’s £1m Turf Science & Technology Centre and the importance of research in the amenity industry. It was well received, and the audience learnt about the variables to consider when conducting trials, the trial process itself, and how the team ensure all trials are completely unbiased.

The OAS team came out in force to support the GMA Awards. They sponsored the Young Grounds Person Of The Year category and  Origin Amenity Solutions Commercial Director Andy Russell presented to the worthy winner Dylan Thompson of Doncaster Rovers FC.

Andy Russell adds, “We were delighted to support the industry and the GMA.  Saltex is always a good event for networking, catching up with customers and launching new products. We had a lot of visitors to the stand, some great meetings, and some interesting leads. Overall it was a valued and worthwhile event for us.”

Moasure at SALTEX 2022

Moasure at SALTEX 2022: Moasure®, the brand behind the world’s first motion-based measuring tool will perform live demonstrations of its revolutionary device that’s transforming the UK’s landscaping industry at this year’s SALTEX tradeshow.

Changing the way professionals measure complex spaces, Moasure ONE is rapidly becoming the tool-of-choice with its ability to rapidly calculate area and measure changes in elevation.

Moasure at SALTEX 2022

Moasure at SALTEX 2022

With over 7,000 industry professionals expected to attend, SALTEX will host over 400 exhibitors with the latest innovative products demonstrated to attendees from a variety of industries including landscaping, sports, lawn care, playground design and equipment.

Utilising accelerometers, gyroscopes and advanced, proprietary algorithms, Moasure ONE measures its own movement without relying on cell phone signal or GPS. Using Bluetooth technology, measurements taken with the device are drawn in real-time through Moasure’s companion smartphone app that allows contractors to view a comprehensive 3D diagram of a job site.

Aiming at the needs of time-poor professionals, Moasure ONE replaces traditional, error-prone measuring tools, allowing experts in the landscaping, sports, lawn care, playground design industries to quickly and accurately estimate jobs.

Completed measurements can then be transferred from the Moasure companion smartphone app into design software without any additional costs.

Now in its eighth decade, SALTEX is Europe’s largest free-admission sports turf, amenities, and landscaping tradeshow and will take place on 2nd – 3rd November at Birmingham’s NEC.

Industry professionals are invited to visit Moasure at SALTEX, where the team will perform live demonstrations throughout the show at Stand F100.

SALTEX is one of over a dozen 2022 international events that have seen Moasure demonstrate its measuring tool to thousands of professionals across a host of industries.

Earlier this month, Moasure ONE won two prestigious accolades including the 2022 ‘Best in Show’ award at LANDSCAPE – and the 2022 Innovation Award at GaLaBau, one of Europe’s biggest international trade shows dedicated to the landscape design and construction industries.

Hozelock-Exel at SALTEX 2022

Hozelock-Exel at SALTEX 2022: Professional knapsack specialists Cooper Pegler are introducing padded straps to its Classic and Series 2000 models to heighten operator comfort and limit body strain during use.

Many of the go-to knapsack models across the popular brand include ergonomically tailored harnesses to channel loading forces in a way that limits stresses on the body.

The latest advance from manufacturer Hozelock-Exel, which follows extensive trialling, further enhances operator safety and protection to include cushioned strapping on Cooper Pegler’s Classic and Series 2000 knapsack models.

“This is a global initiative,” says Allan Wainwright, Hozelock-Exel’s UK Sales Manager, “which aims to make our knapsack brands fully inclusive for all spray operatives.”

The cushioned strapping is introduced at a time when more sports venues and amenity sites are reducing the quantity of treatment liquids they apply in a bid to improve their green credentials.

Golf course greens teams report they are using knapsacks increasingly for spot-spray weed control, a practice that cuts the quantity of liquid applied significantly.

More knapsack hand spraying raises the importance of operator comfort to new levels, therefore.

“Those who spend a full day knapsack spraying will find the new cushioned straps more comfortable,” Allan adds, “reducing the stresses and strains possible on the body during extensive sessions in the field.”

The strapping is understood to be available on new knapsacks from March 2023 but models already in use can be retrofitted with the accessory once launched.

Visitors to Saltex 2022 will be able try out knapsacks fitted with the cushioned straps on the Hozelock-Exel stand, F125.

Steve Braddock – 1964 – 2022

Steve Braddock – 1964 – 2022: One of the most influential figures on our industry, Steve Braddock, has died, following a long illness.

Steve was synonymous with Arsenal and was a significant figure in the move from Highbury to The Emirates, and in making the training ground at Colney such a success.

Steve Braddock – 1964 - 2022

Steve Braddock – 1964 – 2022

He won countless awards for the quality of his pitches; was voted the turf’s top influencer in 2019, and became only the second inductee to the GMA’s Hall of Fame the following year. The respect in which he was held could be seen as Arsenal wore black armbands in his honour in their match away at Bournemouth, while tributes appeared in the national press.

Steve had been brought to Arsenal by former manager, George Graham, but the man who was closest to him throughout his career was Arsene Wenger, who was as much a close friend to him as he was a mentor.

While the work he carried out on the Arsenal pitches was universally regarded as gold plated, it was his nurturing of talent that he will be perhaps best remembered. There are so many Head Groundsmen at home and abroad who owe their success to the education they received at the feet of Steve Braddock.

Our thoughts are with Steve’s family and friends at this very sad time.

The stand was certainly busy and footfall up on last year with continued overseas interest too. The latest ClearWater display unit was on hand and proved useful to explain the virtues of the system (as our photo shows). There were many visits from Greenkeepers, machinery dealerships and others with specific interest in wash pad compliance and had seen pre-show publicity for ClearWater.

Towards the end of the last day the big event was the Prize Draw. Jim Croxton CEO of BIGGA, was happy to make the draw. The system was won by Centurion Park Golf Club, based in the North East and soon to undergo some exciting expansion and renovation plans to really but the course on the map! . John Grey (Course Manager) was delighted to learn of the win and said: “This is great news as will fit in perfectly with the plans for the new. ClearWater has been wanted by the us here at Centurion Park for some time now!”. A new ClearWater system will be on its way to Centurion park very soon!

A great show for ClearWater and Acumen with impressive organisation and support from the BIGGA team as always!

BIGGA announces the FTMI Class of 2022

BIGGA announces the FTMI Class of 2022: The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has revealed the 20 ambitious greenkeepers who will participate in the Future Turf Managers Initiative 2022.

Each year Jacobsen and BIGGA invite 20 up-and-coming association members to participate in the intensive training programme, which has been credited with developing some of the greenkeeping industry’s most influential course managers and head greenkeepers. This year Jacobsen and BIGGA celebrated the first FTMI graduate to achieve the links superintendent position at an Open Championship venue in the form of Royal Liverpool’s James Bledge.

BIGGA announces the FTMI Class of 2022

BIGGA announces the FTMI Class of 2022

FTMI was first hosted in 2013 as a two-day education event and since then has expanded around the world, with similar schemes being introduced in Spain, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand.

For 2022 the structure of FTMI has been adjusted to become a hybrid event that combines workshops at Ransomes Jacobsen’s headquarters in Ipswich, online education sessions and two days of education at BTME in January 2023. FTMI focuses on personal and professional development, rather than agronomy-based subjects, and utilises the expertise of leading course managers, dynamic trainers and industry experts to mentor and educate the next generation of industry leaders.

Candidates are selected based upon an anonymous judging criterion, with the panel gaining an insight into the achievements and ambitions of each applicant, who must be educationally active on a national and regional level.

BIGGA Learning & Development Executive Deb Burnett said: “As an increasing number of FTMI graduates achieve success in their careers, we are reminded of what an incredible learning opportunity FTMI is for BIGGA members. When the 10th FTMI class convenes this year, we’ll be welcoming some of those early delegates back as mentors and I look forward to seeing them inspire the 2022 class, who will then gain the knowledge they require to achieve similar greatness in their own careers.

“Our youngest candidate this year is 22, while the oldest is 47 and that shows how FTMI is available to all BIGGA members. All you need is the desire to learn and progress your career and I’m delighted that among the Class of 2022 we have such a varied mix of people who can share ideas and experiences and who have all got through to this stage based upon their own merits.”

The members of the FTMI Class of 2022 are:

  • Aaron Allibon, first assistant at Orsett
  • John Anderson, senior greenkeeper at Prestwick
  • Rhian Barton, assistant greenkeeper at Royal Liverpool
  • Andrew Barr, deputy head greenkeeper at Greencastle
  • Tom Bromfield, assistant greenkeeper at Trentham
  • Ray Cotgrave, deputy course manager at Pleasington
  • Marcus Davies, assistant greenkeeper at Wentworth Club
  • Michael Gibbons, first assistant at Dunham Forest
  • Sean Harvey, senior greenkeeper at Frilford Heath
  • Peter Lewis, senior greenkeeper/irrigation technician at Royal Liverpool
  • Darren McLoughlin, deputy head greenkeeper at Erskine
  • Matthew Milligan, first assistant at Rudding Park
  • Malcolm Mitchell, deputy head greenkeeper at Burghley Park
  • Wayne Mulrooney, deputy course manager at Great Barr
  • Robert Munro, assistant superintendent at Cabot Cliffs

2022 Garden Trend Report

2022 Garden Trend Report: A new study by garden furniture retailer, Moda Furnishings, has looked into a variety of data sources to see what types of gardens people are looking at for inspiration this year, their favourite colours, furniture trends, flowers and more.

As spring is here people are looking to give their garden a refresh or maybe even a total makeover. Moda Furnishings has put together their 2022 Garden Trend Report showing all the most popular garden trends!

2022 Garden Trend Report

2022 Garden Trend Report

As warm weather hits the UK people are beginning to plant their flowers for the Spring and Summer seasons. Moda analysed search patterns to discover what flowers people were most interested in as spring approaches. Violets came out on top with over 659,000 searches and tulips were not far behind in second with 558,100 searches. View the full list here:

Flower Searches
Violets 659,000
Tulips 558,100
Ammaryllis 442,900
Daffodils 373,100
Hyacinth 286,600
Primrose 207,800
Forget Me Nots 194,200
Ranunculus 186,900
Pansies 175,800
Lillies 104,800

The study analysed Pinterest data and was able to find the number of pins used for each key term to determine which ones people were getting the most excited about. The winner was in fact “Colourful gardens” with almost 1.5 million pins in users’ inspiration boards, showing that people are wanting a splash of colour in their garden as we move closer to the warmer and longer days. Coming in a very close second is “Natural gardens” with 1.3 million pins, which shows that people are taking inspiration from the current climate to create more natural-looking spaces.  See the full list below:

THEME NAME PINS
Colourful Garden 1,435,672
Natural Garden 1,340,090
Entertaining Garden 1,034,231

Cottage Garden 567,210
Wild Garden 448,540
White Garden 256,788
Balcony Garden 132,475
Foliage Garden 101,435

Moda also looked at what colours seem to be trending this year when searching for garden furniture, flowers and accents. The most popular colours people were incorporating into their gardens are natural colours like greens, nudes, whites and greys or pastels, blues, purples and surprisingly yellow.

With the warmer weather and longer days on the horizon people might be looking for some furniture to kit out their garden or balcony, but the big question is what type of furniture are people looking at this year? Rattan garden furniture took the top of the list with almost 9.1X as many searches as the second place, wooden furniture. I think it is safe to assume rattan furniture reigns supreme this year. See below for the full list!

TYPE OF FURNITURE SEARCHES
Rattan 301,000
Wooden 33,100

As we all know trends come and go so sometimes the best way to spruce up your garden is with an accent piece. Moda looked at searches across garden furniture trends to see which trends are booming this year. Firepits have quickly risen to the top of the list this year with the always favourite “egg chair” close behind. Check out the full list to see other ways you can bring your garden to life!
