Innovations and Solutions at Turf Science Live: The recent Turf Science Live event, held at North Hants Golf Club in Fleet, Hampshire, brought together golf course mangers and turf managers for a day of immersive learning and networking. Organised by ICL and Syngenta, the event, now in its fifteenth year, has consistently provided valuable insights and practical knowledge in the field of turf management.

The event featured several interactive stations designed to tackle the key challenges faced by turf managers. Ed Carter, ICL Business Manager, highlighted the importance of these hands-on experiences, stating, “Turf Science Live showcases what ICL and Syngenta are developing in terms of research and development.  It provides a platform for customers to share their challenges and feedback, enabling us to explore potential solutions that can help them in their pursuit of performance.”

The stations covered a variety of topics, including moisture management, Dollar spot, organic fertilisers, and precision nutrition. Eric Chen, Syngenta Technical Manager for biologicals research, led a station focused on water management.

He underscored the importance of understanding effective irrigation practices, explaining, “With climate change, turf grass can lose a lot of water due to sun radiation and wind. However. over-irrigating can be just as detrimental as not irrigating at all. Our goal is to educate attendees on why, how, and when to apply wetting agents and new technologies for effective water resource utilisation.”

The event provided a platform for industry professionals to discuss the latest developments in turf management. Dr Andy Owen, International Technical Manager for ICL, presented on the benefits and considerations of soil organic matter, the sustainability of organic fertilisers and their performance and marketing strategies.

Phil Collinson, Sales & Business Development Manager emphasised the importance of precision nutrition and showcased ICL’s latest research and development advancements in fertiliser and application technology, aimed at helping end users achieve optimal results.

Another highlight was the station on Dollar spot, a fungal disease increasingly affecting golf courses due to changing weather patterns. Sean Loakes, Technical Manager for Syngenta, shared his expertise on managing the disease, stating, “Dollar spot is on the rise, and our trials this year have focused on how we can control it. It’s really valuable to discuss these challenges face-to-face with turf managers, hearing their concerns and sharing solutions.”

Attendee Jack McKay from Wickham Golf Club found the sessions particularly useful, saying, “I came because I was looking for some education on ICL and Syngenta products, but also to network and meet other people. The Dollar spot station stood out for me. It was good to find out a few different ways of attacking the problem and brainstorming ideas.”

Kevin Glazier of Pine Ridge Golf Club echoed this sentiment, appreciating the opportunity to stay ahead of industry trends. “I came to see where the future of greenkeeping is going and what new products are on the horizon. Just yesterday, I had some Dollar spot appear on my greens, so that station was very helpful in terms of understanding how to manage it.”

Stefan Carter from Wentworth Golf Club found the organic fertiliser station beneficial, “I very much enjoyed listening to Andy Owen talking about organic fertilisers; he is someone I could listen to for hours, so it was good to get that insight and pick up some tricks and tips.”

The networking aspect of Turf Science Live was equally valuable. Barry West from Royal Winchester Golf Club appreciated the interactive format, noting, “Turf Science Live is always engaging, interactive, and excellent for career development. Everyone has been really enthusiastic about the topics, and it’s great to see both new and familiar faces.”

Sarah Hughes, Syngenta Business Manager Turf & Landscape, summed up the event’s success, saying, “It has been a fantastic day with a lot of pertinent discussion around some hot topics. The feedback has been excellent, and it encourages us to continue these events.”

GreenTek’s Dyna-Seeder Units Transform Greens at Scarcroft Golf Club: Over the past eight years, Matt Houseman, Head Greenkeeper at Scarcroft Golf Club near Leeds, has successfully transformed the grass composition of his greens using Dyna-Seeder overseeder units from GreenTek.

Matt has been implementing a consistent overseeding program, using the Dyna-Seeders 2-3 times a year, and the results have been nothing short of remarkable.

“Before we owned them, we were overseeding and getting about 30% uptake, but with the use of the Dyna-Seeders we’re getting between 70 to 75% uptake, possibly even more” said Matt.  “Two to three weeks after seeding we can see distinct lines of new seed coming through, which is obviously very pleasing”

Matt says that since he started using the Dyna-Seeder units, the bent grass content in his greens has increased significantly.   This transformation is a testament to the effectiveness of the Dyna-Seeders’ technology. “As a piece of machinery, they have had probably the biggest impact of any machine we have bought in the past decade” states Matt.

 

Marcus Oliver, GreenTek’s product Development Manager says “When we visited Scarcroft recently, they were overseeding during the midst of a ladies’ competition day.  The minimal disturbance to the putting surfaces was outstanding, enabling the overseeding to proceed without disrupting play”.

Scarcroft Golf Club is just one of the many courses throughout the country who by lightly overseeding multiple times a year have managed to steadily improve the grass composition and playing quality of their greens.

Successful Synthetics Seminar at Loughborough University: Loughborough University recently played host to the Synthetic Surfaces Seminar, organised by Syn-Pro by SISIS, part of the Howardson Group.

The event brought together over 60 delegates eager to enhance their understanding of synthetic sports surfaces, covering a comprehensive agenda from environmental impacts to maintenance practices.

The day kicked off with registration and networking, followed by a warm welcome from Jason Briggs of the Howardson Group. Jason set the stage for a day packed with insightful presentations and practical demonstrations.

The first speaker, Professor David James, Group CEO of Labosport and Technical Chair of SAPCA, highlighted the Benefits of Synthetic Turf Sports Surfaces, emphasising their durability, reduced maintenance costs, and all-weather playability.

Following this, Alastair Cox from the European Synthetic Turf Council presented on Managing the Environmental Impact of Synthetic Pitches, including EU regulations, field design, and maintenance strategies. This session was particularly well-received, with attendees appreciating the focus on sustainability and compliance.

Hayley Wilson from SIS Grass then discussed Considerations When Installing a Synthetic Surface, providing valuable tips on choosing the right materials and ensuring long-term performance.

Derek Field of Musco Lighting wrapped up the morning sessions with a talk on Changing Over to LED Lighting, highlighting the cost benefits and eco-friendly aspects of modern lighting solutions for sports facilities.

After a complimentary BBQ lunch and networking session with industry trade representatives, the delegates split into outdoor groups for hands-on demonstrations. Topics covered included Line Marking with Fleet Line Markers, Goal Post Safety & Maintenance by Harrod Sports, and the Performance Differences in Maintaining 3G Pitches by SISIS and Labosport.

The seminar continued with a presentation from Alastair Cox on The Future of Hockey Pitches, before a discussion on the future of 3G and Hybrid pitches, where the experts shared their insights on upcoming trends and innovations in synthetic surfaces.

Professor Paul Fleming from Loughborough University concluded the formal presentations with a session on Good Maintenance Practices During Various Weather Conditions, offering practical advice on keeping synthetic surfaces in top condition all year-round.

The day ended with a lively Q&A session, allowing delegates to pose their questions directly to the panel of experts. Reflecting on the event, Jason Briggs said, “We’ve had over 60 delegates today that have all been very keen on learning more about synthetic surfaces.

These days are all about people wanting information – such as the latest legislation for synthetic surfaces and the maintenance of machinery and surfaces. It’s all about learning as much as you can and being one step ahead in the industry, and establishing where synthetic is going.”

Delegates expressed their appreciation for the seminar. Bradley Tennant from International Greenkeepers for Hire said, “These events are really important to help give back to the industry. There is a lot of misinformation out there, especially around synthetic pitches and maintenance, so it is nice to see experts delivering the correct knowledge to the end user.”

Sean Clixby, Chair of Trustees for Broughton Community & Sports Association, added, “We are in the final stages of building our own 3G facility, so the seminar was perfect timing. I thought it would be a good opportunity to come and get the advice and talk to people who are experts in the field, take the advice back and put it into practice. I would definitely recommend this seminar to other people.”

Ben, who has been at Shrigley Hall for six years and in the greenkeeping industry for 15 years, emphasises the importance of using high-quality materials to maintain the course’s standards. “It is a hotel and resort course, covering 260 acres with lots of woods surrounding it,” Ben explains. “It’s a very busy course, and our membership is thriving.”

Ben has been working with Mansfield Sand for six years, primarily using their MM35 Golf for top dressing the greens. “We started using MM35 Golf because we had issues sourcing our previous sand product,” Ben notes. “We use it for top dressing on greens and probably go through about 60 tonnes of it a year. Our approach is little and often to keep it topped up and at a good level.”

Mansfield Sand’s MM35 Golf, a pure silica sand sourced from the company’s Two Oaks Quarry, is renowned for its benefits, including improved recovery, firmness, smoothness, and an enhanced rootzone. “The MM35 Golf helps us ‘true’ the greens up, smooth the surface, and fill in any indentations,” Ben explains. “If we just put a little bit on at a time, matching it with the growth, it helps build up a nice healthy rootzone. We have a budget to work with, and MM35 Golf from Mansfield fits nicely into that budget. Without it, our drainage would probably be worse.”

The reliability of Mansfield Sand’s service is another key factor for Ben. “I call up the Mansfield Sand office, and they arrange my order. It will be delivered on time, every time – I can’t fault it at all.”

In addition to MM35 Golf, Shrigley Hall also uses Mansfield Sand’s sand compost mix for divots. “We purchase this once a year, and it is a really good product. It is a 60.40 mix, perfect for divots, filling in holes around the tees, and any sort of construction work we do,” Ben adds.

Mansfield Sand’s products, with their consistent quality and exceptional performance, have become indispensable to Shrigley Hall’s course maintenance. The MM35 Golf not only ensures the greens remain smooth and true but also significantly enhances the rootzone and drainage, contributing to the overall health and playability of the course.

STIHL to present new products at APF: STIHL will showcase a range of its new products at this years’ APF Exhibition, the UK’s largest dedicated forestry, woodland and arboriculture trade show, between 19th – 21st September 2024. 

Taking place at the Ragley Estate, Warwickshire, STIHL will be presenting a wide range of tools including the new MS 400.1 forestry chainsaw and STIHL’s first professional battery-powered pruner – the GTA 40. Both new models will be launching in 2025.

Visitors to the STIHL stand will get the chance to see the new MS 400.1 in action at STIHLs extensive demonstration plot. Despite the similarity in model name, the MS 400.1 has been completely re-developed, building on the strengths of the original MS 400 and taking it to the next level.

The MS 400.1 weighs in at just 5.5 kg, 300 g less than the MS 400, offering professionals the best power-to-weight ratio of any professional petrol chainsaw on the market. With an impressive power output of 3.9kW, the MS 400.1 is optimised for long days in the forest, felling and processing larger trees.

In addition, STIHL will be presenting its first professional battery-powered pruner, specifically designed for tree care. The GTA 40 combines low weight and compact design with excellent cutting performance, resulting in a machine that excels at pruning on the ground, as well as maintenance and corrective pruning by trained climbing arborists.

Complete with a 6” STIHL Light 01 guide bar with low friction sprocket nose, and a narrow STIHL 1/4″ Picco Micro 3 saw chain, the GTA 40 ensures high cutting performance and a smooth cutting result.

The STIHL team will be on stand 650 from 9am to 6pm throughout the duration of the event for product demonstrations, advice and guidance on all STIHL machines.
