Battery Power Vs Petrol Power: There was a time when it seemed petrol powered outdoor tools would always reign supreme. Battery powered tools were regarded by professionals and serious gardeners as no competition. They couldn’t match the power and uninterrupted operation of their two-stroke counterparts.

That time has passed. Today’s Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionised the way we work with battery powered tools. Now they can produce the power to equal petrol equipment while producing zero emissions at the point of work. Noise levels are also greatly reduced and the benefits don’t stop there. Vibration is minimised. The lower maintenance costs of battery powered motors lead to substantial long-term savings. Safety is improved by removing the need for fuel filling and on-site storage. The traditional argument in favour of petrol and two-stroke, apart from the question of power, was the uninterrupted operation. Batteries quickly ran down and took many hours to recharge. With petrol you just fill up and go. Batteries had a limited life and needed regular, costly replacement. To some extent, operators using outdoor power tools all day long may argue the need to remain with petrol two-stroke for the time being. Professionals arborists need to know their chainsaws are going to work for them all day. Groundcare maintenance contractors and landscapers rely on their petrol brushcutters, power blowers and hedgetrimmers to take the punishment the job demands and maintain productivity. But time is running out for fossil fuels, with legislation and Health and Safety putting the squeeze on the use of petrol power. So it’s good to know there’s an alternative.

Lithium-ion is highly efficient and brings longer battery life, quicker charging times and low self-discharge to the table. The power you need is there instantly, consistently and almost silently. Batteries do need charging but charge times have become greatly reduced using rapid chargers and most people will have a spare battery on charge in readiness. On the subject of replacement, that is easily weighed up against petrol and two-stroke engines needing regular servicing, with associated costs. Today’s brushless electric motor is maintenance-free, producing greener, cleaner energy. Emissions are managed by energy efficient motor controls for speed, power delivery and battery temperature, with the added benefits of improved performance and longer battery life. Using a rapid charger, quick charging also reduces downtime so more jobs can be completed in a day; and there is of course the option of using 4Ah batteries for longer run time.

As professionals know, regular use of handheld petrol-powered tools carries the risk of Hand-arm Vibration (HAV), also known as vibration white finger. This painful condition can be avoided using low vibration tools, which is another benefit of battery powered tools, many of them operating well below the daily 2.5m/s² A(8) Exposure Action Value (EAV) limit.* Other considerations that make battery power a safer option are the fact the operator is not working with and storing flammable liquid. Much reduced noise levels are not only good for the environment in which the work is taking place, the operator is not exposed to high noise levels associated with two-stroke petrol powered machinery.

Taking the arguments in favour of battery power, with the benefits to the environment, the operator, and those in the vicinity, it’s easy to see why many professionals are turning to ‘charge and go’. Husqvarna Extend Battery Range: Husqvarna — one of the world’s leading producers of forest, park and garden products — extends its range of battery lawnmowers with the Husqvarna LC 353iVX, a new battery walk-behind designed for demanding domestic use in medium to larger lawns. The mower is equipped with Husqvarna Connect which offers Bluetooth connectivity to a smart phone, variable speed self-drive and 53cm composite cutting deck and dual battery slots. Powered by high efficiency brushless motors, the new lawnmower from Husqvarna is quiet and without direct emissions.

The demand for easy to use, quiet battery products with no direct emissions and low running costs is steadily rising and people are getting increasingly interested in neighbourhood friendly garden tools. Husqvarna LC 353iVX does not release any fumes and with a brushless electric motors it operates at around 83 dB, which is significantly lower than a petrol walk behind lawnmower with similar performance.

Thanks to its Bluetooth connectivity, Husqvarna LC 353iVX can be paired with Husqvarna Connect, allowing users to get information and tips on maintenance and troubleshooting as well as finding guides and manuals. Furthermore, with the mobile app, it is possible to see battery status, helping users plan their garden work more efficiently. The app also allows direct contact to a local Authorised Husqvarna dealer.

With a runtime of up to 70 minutes coupled with a lightweight 53cm composite cutting deck, Husqvarna LC 353iVX is designed for medium to larger sized domestic gardens. The product features variable speed digital drive allowing the ground speed of the machine to be adjusted to suit the walking speed of the user. For increased safety, Husqvarna LC 353iVX has a transport mode which stops the blade from turning and leaves the engine running, enabling off-turf traversing and convenient stop and go operation.

Automatic battery switch and energy saving mode

The new LC 353iVX from Husqvarna has dual battery slots with a feature that automatically switches battery if one of them is out of power, letting the user continue mowing without having to stop to switch batteries. Continuous drive with two batteries means longer runtime and more efficient mowing. The mower can be used with a single battery or a combination of the BLi integrated batteries, ideal for users that already own Husqvarna Battery series products.

The digital control panel on the new Husqvarna battery lawnmower gathers all user controls, gives an overview of the remaining runtime and lets the user choose between four speeds, depending on their needs. The savE™ mode on the Husqvarna lawnmower is designed to lower the RPM, while retaining torque to preserve battery life. By simply pushing the savE™ button on the keypad the energy saving mode is activated or de-activated.

Husqvarna uses a compatible battery system which means it’s possible to use the same batteries for all Husqvarna battery powered products of the same voltage, such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, trimmers or blowers.

STIHL’s New Battery Production Line

STIHL’s New Battery Production Line: The STIHL Group is setting up an in-house production line for battery products at its headquarters in Germany. In doing so, the company is underpinning its efforts to manufacture top-of-the-line technology, even for battery products. Backpack batteries for professional applications will be produced at a highly automated high-tech manufacturing facility in Waiblingen-Hohenacker. As a result, the company is once again demonstrating its innovative strength in the field of environmentally friendly tools for forestry and agriculture, as well as for landscape maintenance and private garden owners.

“Entering into battery pack manufacturing is the logical continuation of the STIHL battery strategy,” Dr. Bertram Kandziora, Chairman of the Executive Board of STIHL, says, explaining the move. “In just 10 years, we have expanded our range of battery products from a hedge trimmer to three product lines featuring a wide selection of different tools.” STIHL launched its line of battery products for professional and high-end private use in 2009. In 2016, the company opened a competence center for battery and electronics development at its headquarters in Waiblingen by expanding its development center. Today, more than 300 employees work at the center of competence. “We have been able to fill many vacant positions in recent months, especially in the fields of batteries, electronics, connected products and IT. This is essential to further growth in this promising segment,” Dr. Kandziora says. Increasingly powerful batteries have made the products popular among more than just private users. The quieter, emissions-free products offer many advantages, especially for municipal customers.

STIHL New Battery Production Line

The battery production line was built with in-house expertise within the space of just 18 months. The first trial run at the new building in Waiblingen commenced in September. The first batteries produced in-house are slated to hit the market in fall 2019. Most batteries will be destined for European dealers.
