The Wildlife Trusts’ big nature challenge

The Wildlife Trusts’ big nature challenge: 30 Days Wild, the UK’s biggest nature challenge run by The Wildlife Trusts, invites people of all ages to connect with nature every single day during the month of June. This year there’s a new twist: 30 Days Wild will take you on a week-by-week adventure moving through five different themes:

  • tune into the senses
  • movement and play
  • learning and discovery
  • helping nature
  • emotional connection to nature
The Wildlife Trusts’ big nature challenge

The Wildlife Trusts’ big nature challenge

These themes will help guide you, your family and friends through the challenge helping you reach that 30 day target, whether tuning into the sound of bird life, moving through your local woods by moonlight, building a den, discovering an unexplored country lane or local park, making time to build a bug hotel or owl box or starting a diary of your day-to-day wildlife sightings.

New 30 Days Wild activity packs include a wild bee poster along with seeds and other materials to inspire you to do something wild every single day.

30 Days Wild is funded thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery and has grown a huge and dedicated fan base – over two million people have taken part over the last 9 years.

Last year over 500,000 people took part in the challenge including 114,245 households, 11,740 schools, 898 care homes and 1,384 businesses. Popular activities include wildlife-watching, eating outdoors, planting wildflower seeds and listening to birdsong. Other favourite pastimes included bug-hunting, fruit-picking, growing plants and flowers, exploring a nature reserve, creating a mini pond or going on a beach or river walk.

We all know how much happier and healthier we feel when connecting with nature – and we have research to prove it – so save the date!

David Oakes, actor and ambassador for The Wildlife Trusts, says:

“I truly hope you’ll join in the 30 Days Wild challenge wherever you are in the UK! We need nature more than ever and 30 Days Wild is a chance to really celebrate our connection to the precious green and blue spaces both on our doorstep and further afield. Whether you’ve a legendary forest a short train ride away, or a young sapling in your local park that is primed to be the Tree of the Year 2523; whether you turn down the tunes on your next jog in favour of nature’s wild beats, or head to your nearest coastline to explore the rhythms in the rock pools and the sounds of the sand dunes; whatever you choose to do, there are limitless opportunities to dive into this 30 day adventure. However much time you can spare each day there’s always an opportunity to take part, whatever your age. Please get involved and tell all your family and friends to join in too!”

Jo Richards, head of communications at The Wildlife Trusts, says:

“The Wildlife Trusts’ 30 Days Wild challenge in June has to be one of the highlights of my year! What better an excuse to go out and enjoy the UK’s great outdoors, which is simply buzzing with nature’s activities, whether it be wildflowers blooming, butterflies fluttering or skylarks bouncing up and down. I love the challenge of making myself set aside at least five minutes a day for thirty days in a row to encounter something new in nature or perhaps take a little longer to do something that’ll help wildlife where I live. 30 Days Wild is always a big hit, but I hope that even more people will join us this year to bask in the glory of our wonderful wildlife.”

30 Days Wild – Big Wild Weekend:

To help motivate you on this journey, we’ve enlisted the help of our friends David Oakes and Sophie Pavelle for the Big Wild Weekend on 18th June.

David Oakes continues:

“Come and join me and the glorious Sophie Pavelle on the Big Wild Weekend. If you love nature, join us via YouTube on Sunday evening, the 18th June, for fun and games with the Wildlife Trusts Big Wild Quiz. Come along to be top of the pollinators or just tune in to be entertained by the incredible and fascinating world of bison, beavers, bees, beetles and bats! Other wildlife species are available. I can’t wait to see you then.”

The Wildlife Trusts provide free resources for everyone who signs up. Just register your interest here wildlifetrusts.org/30dayswild. There is also a 30 Days Wild session planner specially designed for teachers to use in class.

Big Success for the Micro-Spray

Big Success for the Micro-Spray: The demands from an amenity sprayer extend far beyond reliability. Strength, durability, and flexibility are naturally important, but a key requirement is low impact on the surfaces where the sprayer will be used.

For sports turf professionals, the Martin Lishman Micro-Spray is the number one choice of pedestrian sprayer. Combining control and power with responsive easy handling in a compact form, the fully electric Micro-Spray delivers a precise application with minimal turf impact, making it ideal for use on sports turf and golf courses.

Big Success for the Micro-Spray

Big Success for the Micro-Spray

Amenity specification with agricultural strength and durability has been the key design element of all Martin Lishman compact sprayers, and the Micro-Spray is no different. Its unique design and versatile functionality have captured the attention of the industry.

With satisfied users worldwide, Martin Lishman have reported a very successful year for the Micro-Spray. This is thanks to an exclusive partnership with Campey Turf Care Systems, who brought their expertise and delivery network into the mix to put Micro-Spray units in every corner of the globe, from Europe to Australia.

Designed and manufactured in England at the Martin Lishman site in Bourne, Lincolnshire, the combination of accurate control and spraying power in a lightweight package to prevent compaction and turf damage is at the forefront of the Micro-Spray’s design. A strong powder coated steel chassis, driven by an advanced rear wheel drive system and two large deep cycle batteries help maintain a low centre of gravity and weight balance.

The UV-safe 120 litre tank feeds the 23 litre/min pump which can accommodate a 2.5 to 3.5m folding boom and a wide range of application rates. Easy-to-reach controls enable the operator to quickly adjust sprayer settings including drive direction, speed, pump pressure and optional bout marker controls.

“It’s been great to watch the Micro-Spray gain traction and carve its way into the amenity industry”, explains Joel Capper, Managing Director of Martin Lishman Ltd. “We have worked with some very talented and influential people to make the sprayer what it is today. Now with the sales and distribution support from Campey Turf Care, we look forward to the next chapter in the Micro-Spray success story”.

The Micro-Spray forms part of the Martin Lishman compact sprayer range, including trailed, ATV mounted and demountable models. Tank sizes range from 70 to 600 litres and boom widths from 1 metre to 8 metres. Specialist or bespoke requests can also be catered for which allows considerable variation of models to meet the specialist needs of customers.

The Micro-Spray along with a selection of other Martin Lishman sprayers will be on display at the BTME event, Harrogate (stand 248) in January 2023.

Campey goes big for BTME 2022

Campey goes big for BTME 2022: For the first time, Campey Turf Care Systems will be showcasing models from nine product ranges at BTME 2022.

The exhibition in Harrogate is one of the most popular events in the greenkeeping calendar, attracting turf professionals from across the world. In March, attendees will see over 15 Campey machines in one place with equipment covering everything from renovations and aeration to overseeding and utility vehicles.

Campey goes big for BTME 2022

To exhibit this bumper range of machinery, Campey has stands 248 and 249 in Red Zone North, along with their renowned product specialists who will be on hand to give expert advice, talk turf and catch up after a year away from Harrogate.

With the 2022 edition of BTME delayed until March, Campey viewed it as an opportunity to bring the latest turf technology to greenkeepers who may have missed out during the pandemic.

Campey Director Lee Morgado explains: “We are delighted to be going back to Harrogate after a long time away with our most extensive presence ever at BTME.

“Turf technology moves quickly, and maintenance trends move with it. We’re seeing more and more people renovating tees and other areas of their course with the Universe® rotor, and the desire for all-electric options like the AllTrec Tool Carrier is growing as well.

“For us, this is an excellent opportunity to bring all of those machines together for people to assess the latest options we have and look into new maintenance practices they might have spoken about or seen on social media.

“Even though we’ve all still been out and working directly with customers, there’s nothing like a show to catch up with people from the industry, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone onto the Campey stand.”

The machinery line-up will encompass every area of maintenance. Topdressing is covered by the industry leading Dakota range, and the effective TB220 and UniRake complete the grooming line-up.

The combination of the Universe® Rotor and Vredo Super Compact, an increasingly popular duo for renovating tees, will be on display with advice from Campey product specialists on how to get the best from the equipment.

Campey’s all-electric products will also be shown with the AllTrec Tool Carrier featuring mowing, hedge cutting, weed brush, and burning attachments.

These staple industry favourites are joined by machines from Omarv, Koro, New Holland, Campey and Imants, with new products to be launched at the show.

A compact tractor with a big heart

A compact tractor with a big heart: Massey Ferguson’s reputation for attention to detail, build quality and reliability is evident across its comprehensive line-up of agricultural tractors. Exactly the same approach has also been rigorously applied to its latest range of compact machines in the six-model MF 1700 S series – two of which are new introductions.

Powered by a range engine capacities of between 35hp and 67hp, with either three or four cylinders. the MF 1700 M is likely to appeal to a variety of users – farmers, smallholders, groundscare professionals, contractors and others.

A compact tractor with a big heart

A compact tractor with a big heart

One of the most important factors from an environmental angle is that each model in this new range is powered one of the latest Stage V-compliant engines, reducing still further their carbon footprint.

Versatility is the first word that springs to mind when describing the MF 1700 M range. Not far behind in the list of must-have qualities is the new HST transmission, which delivers precision control and a higher maximum speed, together with the new factory-fitted cab option.

The transmission uses a shuttle lever to control the tractor’s progress – as you would find on a normal agricultural tractor – simplifying the operating experience

Operator comfort and ease of operation were factors high on the list of design priorities for both the cab and platform versions – a tiltable steering column, easy access, air conditioning, heated rear window – and with ergonomically and logically-arranged controls, for example.

In addition, each model comes with a mechanically-suspended seat as standard, with pneumatic suspension available as an option. The operator’s working day can be enhanced considerably with the radio-ready pack – consisting of antenna and speaker – together with two USB sockets and storage space for a mobile phone.

All-round visibility has been maximised to enhance machine control in confined spaces and buildings with restricted headroom.

Like many of its bigger brothers, the MF 1700 M has an array of logically positioned controls, including the joystick – standard on cab models, but  available as an option on platform versions. This incorporates two levers to control rear spool valves, while the joystick itself controls the mid-mounted spool valves and the front loader, where specified.

First-time users have commented on the model’s smoothly efficient operation and it’s ability to access confined or restricted spaces. By the same token, they have been impressed by how readily it takes to field work when coupled with a range of implements – and, indeed, when in road transport mode. The sheer versatility is really underlined when specialist users take to the golf course for the intricacies of green mowing and maintenance.

The control procedure for the independent PTO is a new feature that further enhances the machine’s field of operation by allowing the operator to set different operating modes – normal, soft or automatic – to take account of which implement is being used and what the actual ground conditions dictate. There’s also an external PTO switch, located on the rear fender, for additional convenience of operation.

A pair of rear spool valves is included as standard specification, each of which is available with single- or double-acting operation, while activation can be locked using levers to ‘free-flow’ mode for ease of operation and enhanced efficiency.

Automatic four-wheel drive introduces a significant increase in the machine’s overall productivity – and, indeed, it’s safety. How it works is that as soon as the brake pedal is depressed, the system simultaneously switches from two-wheel drive to four, so applying the brake to all four wheels.

A hydrostatic speed control lever enables the operator to adjust the cruising speed while on the move. When engaged, the tractor works more efficiently while enhancing operator comfort.

Another simple, but highly-effective safety feature is PTO automatic mode. When engaged, the rear- or mid-PTO rotates while moving forward and stops when travelling in reverse – or when the tractor stops.

Other options on the MF 1700 M include front weights and air-suspension seats, together with a comprehensive choice of agricultural and larger turf tyres.

The MF 1735 M and MF 1740 M models can be ordered with new factory-fitted mower deck. Easy to mount, the deck is specified with three blades and is 60in wide, proving cutting heights of between 20mm and 115mm. The desired height can be set from the operator’s seat and is adjustable in eight steps. The new, larger tyres provide a ground clearance of 150mm.

Platform models benefit from foldable ROPS protection as standard and have the same operator controls as those versions fitted with cabs.

Massey Ferguson makes the point that the higher specifications found on its latest 1700 M tractors are part of the company’s on-going strategy of overall enhancement across its range of machines. This, the company states, means more models to suit the wider requirements and greater demands of more farmers and contractors.

GreenMech’s EVO delivers big performance

GreenMech’s EVO delivers big performance: Reflecting the growth in the company and scope of the projects undertaken, Maidstone-based Day Tree Fellers have just purchased their 4th GreenMech woodchipper – going from the pedestrian CS100 unit up to the mighty 45hp EVO 165D-45LE unit in the space of just six years!

Delivering powerful, yet surprisingly quiet, performance the EVO 165D-45LE hasn’t missed a beat since Owner Les Day took delivery of the unit in December 2020.

GreenMech’s EVO delivers big performance

GreenMech’s EVO delivers big performance

Les, along with one of his sons, started Day Tree Fellers in 2015 before another two sons came on board to complete the current line-up. “When we first started out, we looked at a couple of different chipper manufacturers and were instantly impressed by GreenMech’s willingness to help and their general service level” explains Les. “At the time we went for the 4” CS100 pedestrian unit, and quickly followed that up with two turntable QuadChip 160’s.”

As the nature of their work evolved to span both domestic and commercial projects, it became evident that they needed even more productivity and the ability to process even larger timber. “What the EVO 165D-45LE lacks by way of a turntable, it more than makes up for in other areas! It works so quickly offering fantastic throughput rates but I particularly like that you can manually slow the feed rollers down to process any particularly large diameter timbers. The higher horsepower Kubota diesel engine handles this with ease and will hopefully give us years of reliable service.”

“Along with the No-Stress control system, another thing that’s impressed me is how quiet this machine is which is excellent, particularly for work in domestic areas.” As standard, the entire EVO range features an all-steel bonnet and additional fan to help reduce overall sound power and sound pressure. This, combined with GreenMech’s disc-blade chipping system, means the EVO is one of the quietest chipper collections available.

“It’s also been great that the experience we’ve had with GreenMech and their dealer network throughout the latest purchase was just as good as we enjoyed all those years ago – the factory were even able to accommodate fitting my machine with a bespoke folding output chute to suit my available storage. Nothing is too much trouble and it’s that level of service, and the reliable performance, that keeps me coming back every time.”

Big turn out for Ariens at SALTEX

Big turn out for Ariens at SALTEX: AriensCo returned to Saltex this year with several professional zero-turn models from their range, including the new ZENITH 60 mower.

The company says the show was exceptional for its number of visitors to their stand and the quality of the leads taken, which will be passed on to the dealer network. The Ariens zero-turns also drew a great deal of attention from prospective dealers interested in selling both the professional and domestic machines.

Big turn out for Ariens at SALTEX

“We had a large number of dealers come to the stand to talk about the market for zero-turns,” says Ariens Area Sales Manager, Richard Williams, “and end-users and contractors wanting to know about the potential benefits of using the machines. It was the first time we have shown the new Zenith, which is one of the zero-turn mowers we are manufacturing in the UK.” Ariens is the only zero-turn manufacturer in Europe and made the decision to produce a number of models in Britain based on the fast-growing demand experienced over recent years.

“Users are drawn to our zero-turns for their comfort, durability and above all, cost-effectiveness,” says Richard, “their speed and large deck sizes make a very big saving in time and that in-turn contributes substantially to the cost of the machine.” These features and benefits very much apply to the all-new Ariens ZENITH 60 which is designed for the professional who wants everyday use from their mower. It offers commercial-grade features and outstanding performance with its large 152cm (60”) cutter deck and faster ground speed. AriensCo points out that this commercial quality, the durable industry-leading steel frames and high performance apply across the entire Ariens range of zero-turn mowers.

Also on show at Saltex were two new Ariens concept machines. These were very well received, enjoying a great deal of positive feedback from visitors to the Ariens stand. These machines are currently being considered for the European market. Ariens zero-turns are manufactured in their UK plant. The complete range of products, including walk-behind mowers and snow throwers, is sold through approved dealers.

Berry Big Ambitions

Berry Big Ambitions: When Craig Berry left school, his love of golf led him to study for a National Certificate in Greenkeeping at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC).

Nearly two decades on, he is living the dream, working as the Old Course Supervisor for the St Andrews Links Trust and managing 22 members of staff.

Berry Big Ambitions

However, he has one more ambition to fulfil – that of overseeing an Open Championship.

“That is without a doubt my ultimate dream,” said father-of-two Craig.

While studying at SRUC’s Elmwood campus, which boasts its own 18-hole golf course, Craig undertook placements at Lundin Golf Club.

He then completed an apprenticeship at Lundin Golf Club and continued his education at Elmwood through block release, gaining Levels 2 and 3 in Sports Turf Maintenance.

In 2011, he began working at Leven Links Golf course, moving to the St Andrews Links Trust Old Course three years later.

Craig rounded off his Elmwood education by completing an HNC in Golf Course Management via distance learning, and was awarded an R&A Greenkeeping Scholarship.

“Not only did the scholarship provide funding and support, but it gave me the chance to visit Askernish Golf Course, which is just stunning,” he said. “R&A support also helped me network, refine my professional skills and attend future golf managers’ course development.”

In 2018, Craig was appointed to his current position as Old Course Supervisor at the oldest and most iconic golf course in the world.

“It is a great place,” he said.  “It’s like second nature to me.”

Craig, who has built up more than 18 years’ experience in the industry, puts his achievements down to two things.

“Never get ahead of yourself; you need other people’s knowledge. And secondly, let your work do the talking.

“Every day is a different day. There is the pressure to always be better than yesterday.  I have a hunger for it and I use that to motivate my team.

“The high expectations on a top end golf course are always top of the agenda for the old course squad. The pressures of delivering a golf course to an Open Championship standard daily, has its difficulties, but with the experience and enthusiasm of the Old Course squad, we are able to deliver and achieve this standard.

My main aim going forward is to keep a high level of communication throughout the squad and provide consistent training, something which I have benefitted from and I see as an integral part of this industry.”

Engcon Host Big Dig Day

Engcon Host Big Dig Day: Engcon, the world’s leading supplier of tiltrotators, welcomed excavator operators from across the UK to its first Big Dig Day of 2019.

The event, which took place at Northamptonshire’s Wicksteed Park on the 26th and 27th of April and attracted nearly 100 visitors and their families, gave owner operators the chance to get hands-on experience with Engcon’s market-leading range of tiltrotators and hydraulic attachments.

Engcon Host Big Dig Day

The full-suite of Engcon’s products were available to test throughout the day, fitted to some of the world’s leading excavator brands, ranging in size from under 2 to over 20 tonnes. What’s more, Engcon’s team of technical experts were on hand across both days to answer any questions attendees may have had regarding the innovative product range.

One such attendee was Tom Law, operating contracts manager for Lynch Plant Hire. Speaking of the weekend, he said: “It was great to be able to attend this year’s Big Dig Day. Being able to use a machine and get a feel for the tiltrotators was really useful in seeing how versatile the products are.”

Robert Hunt, Engcon UK’s managing director, added: “It was fantastic to welcome so many excavator owners and operators, and their families, to Wicksteed Park over the weekend. While the British tiltrotator market may still be in its relative infancy, it’s clear there is a real appetite from across the UK sector to learn more about this innovative way of digging.

“We know from our experience that you need to drive a tiltrotator to fully understand the versatility and efficiency they bring to everyday digging. Watching one at a show or on YouTube is no substitute for sitting in the seat for half an hour and trying it for yourself. Being able to do this in an unpressurised environment where there is plenty of expertise on hand to answer questions – whether it’s Engcon sales or technical staff or one of our many users who were present with their machines is invaluable.”

Engcon’s full product range including tilties for diggers from 1 to 33 tonnes, hitches, hydraulic connectivity in the form of the company’s retrofittable EC-Oil system and a massive range of buckets, attachments and hydraulic tools will be on show at the forthcoming Plantworx exhibition in mid-June. There will be a significant number of new products and services on offer, with new cassette-mounted tools and show-stopping installations on active display throughout the show.
