Deere dealers explore technology advances

Deere dealers explore technology advances: More than 50 John Deere dealers have been given advanced training on how greenkeepers can make the most of the latest technological innovations developed by the company.

Held at Golfpark Kurpfalz – a renowned German complex largely maintained using John Deere machinery – the event saw representatives from across Deere’s European network of dealers trained by experts from across the golf and turf division.

Chris Meacock, Division Sales Manager for Golf and Turf, said: “Our innovation pipeline looks to improve every aspect of a machine’s performance and that covers many facets of a product.

“What’s changing fast is the opportunity to use technology and data to make the process of using a John Deere product more efficient and productive for our customers.

“This event was a chance for the dealer network to see all our precision turf technology in action, working together to demonstrate the advantages of GPS-driven accuracy.”

The training centred on the direct impact precision applications can have on reducing inputs while increasing accuracy and productivity through efficiency gains.

Dealers were shown how mowers and compact tractors equipped with Deere’s satellite-steering AutoTrac technology can reduce overlaps and fuel consumption. HD200 Progator sprayers were demonstrating their ability to place fertilisers and herbicides in exactly the right place, avoiding spraying non-target areas and wastage.

The advantages of accurately mapping a course’s tees, greens, fairways, bunkers and paths was presented using Starfire GPS receivers and dealers were given further training in how the data produced could be accessed and tailored for course managers using the John Deere Operations Center.

Sessions were also run on how OnLink – the cloud-based golf course management software acquired by John Deere in 2019 – automatically synchronises any machine and operator working anywhere on the course, allowing course managers to remotely create and assign tasks and meticulously manage equipment and labour costs.

“This training sets up our dealer network to be able to work even closer with golf courses who are looking to take their maintenance and management to the next level,” Chris added.

CROSSHEAD: Satellite-steering with AutoTrac

One of John Deere’s key strengths is its ability to adapt technology from other areas of its global business and implement it in professional groundscare.

GPS steering in agriculture has been hugely popular for over 15 years, but its application on golf courses and sports pitches is now starting to develop.

The John Deere AutoTrac system used on fairway mowers and compact tractors has the potential to deliver huge benefits.

Assisted steering leads to less operator stress and reduced overlaps or gaps, which positively impacts fuel consumption and productivity.

Lazer-straight lines and cut patterns are also easier to achieve by removing operator inconsistencies, even in low-visibility conditions.

“Boundaries and guidance lines can be stored in the John Deere Operations Center too, allowing the next operator to follow the same pattern,” Chris adds.

CROSSHEAD: Spraying with more accuracy

The cost of protecting turf from pests and diseases, and nurturing it with sufficient fertiliser, is a significant cost for golf courses.

Clubs are also under increasing pressure to ensure that chemical applications do not have any detrimental impact on the environment.

It’s been 20 years since John Deere launched its HD200 sprayer, which works in tandem with a Progator utility vehicle, but its relevance to today’s turfcare profession has never been greater.

Equipped with a Starfire receiver the machine has the ability to automatically turn on or shut off individual sprayer nozzles across the boom according to its position on the course – spraying around watercourses or the fringe of a green, for example.

Accuracy can be measured down to 2.5cm.

CROSSHEAD: Remote management with OnLink

OnLink technology delivers two clever modules; OnEquip which provides a real-time feed on the machines activity, such as run time, servicing intervals and idle periods, while OnLabor schedules work and assigns it to members of the team.

OnLink connects to machines to the Operations Center so data gathered can be used to plan and improve operation efficiency – each machine’s working hours can be balanced across its life cycle to reduce the cost of ownership. Mowing patterns, reducing the time required to complete work, can also be managed.

Alerts flag when maintenance is required along with owners setting geofences and curfews to stop the machine working outside of set locations or hours, increasing its security profile.

In the future the app-based OnLink hub will offer the possibility to plan for weather conditions, track the speed of greens and monitor soil moisture while also creating accurate budget forecasts.

SCAG listen to their dealers: STM Co now have the SFC 30 and its smaller brother the SFC 21 added to the impressive SCAG mower range. The SCAG Finish Mower is a credit to their principle of listening to the dealers.

Interest had been regularly expressed in having a small pedestrian mower to finish off after a large area cut with their other trusted SCAG machines – or just to have a regular-use walk-behind that they knew they could trust to do the job, withstand heavy use and last several seasons. The dealers knew this was the sort of product SCAG would make well by maintaining the quality of design and build that is synonymous with the name.

First off was the SFC 30; a tough machine to sit between a 36” cut mower and a commercial 14”. SCAG made a superb job of the unit, supplying it with several standard features: easy height adjustment, good range of handle angle, internally routed operating cables for snag protection and three cutting options of bag, side discharge or mulch. Swivelling front casters are an additional feature on the best-selling “S” version, as they greatly enhance manoueverability.

Engine options are 5 and 7hp Kohler Command units for the range.

Sales for the 30 have been good, and SCAG have decided to extend the range and introduce the smaller cut pressed SFC 21. No casters available on this model, but the three cut options of bag, mulch or side discharge remain, plus the two engine types.

Two new Corvus UTV dealers announced: BOSS ORV continues to grow their UK dealer network with the announcement of two new Corvus Off-Road Vehicle dealers. The latest dealer in the South-West is I J Jones Engineering Ltd. Based near the south-west coastline between the towns of Totness, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth.

Two more Corvus dealers appointed

Two more Corvus dealers appointed: In the continuing expansion of their dealer network, Boss ORV has appointed two new Corvus dealers. David Taylor Garages and Campey Turf Care are the latest dealers who will be selling the European manufactured Corvus range of 4×4 utility vehicles.

David Taylor Garages has been a constant presence in Crickhowell, Powys, Wales since the 1960’s where the business grew and expanded to include haulage, recovery and several petrol stations. All three of David Taylor’s children joined the business. In 1988 Gene and his brother Scott, with a travel journalist, drove from John O’Groats to Land’s End in an Isuzu, believed to be the first time a 4×4 did this trip, to raise money for charity.

AriensCo putting dealers in pole position: AriensCo, an industry leader in outdoor power equipment, will hold its annual dealer meeting at the legendary home of British motor racing, Silverstone on 8th September. The day will be led by the senior management team including Jochen Schneider, Executive Vice President of EMEAA and Darren Spencer, Vice President for EMEAA with all on-programme dealers for Ariens, Countax and Westwood invited.

The meeting’s theme is Pole Position and will showcase AriensCo’s new products, people and support which will put AriensCo and its dealers in pole position for the new season, and future seasons to come.

The annual event will give dealers the chance to learn about the exciting news for 2023 including AriensCo’s ever expanding range of petrol and battery powered zero-turns and a new commercial brand, joining the AriensCo family.

The meeting will also give dealers the chance to discover new systems that will help market their dealerships and encourage growth and Ariens Academy – a programme to educate and train dealers on its products.

This will be the first in-person dealer meeting since 2019 where, due to Covid-19 restrictions, AriensCo had to hold virtual meetings and smaller roadshows. However, despite Covid-19, AriensCo didn’t take its foot off the pedal. In fact, AriensCo continued to invest in all areas of operations, fuelling impressive growth in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.

Toro UK dealers visit US Head Office

Toro UK dealers visit US Head Office: Toro U.K. Limited recently took a group of UK dealers to Minnesota, USA, to visit The Toro Company’s global headquarters in Bloomington, and tour one of the company’s manufacturing facilities.

Dealers had the opportunity to tour Toro’s headquarters to see first-hand the vast testing facilities that underpin the quality of our full product portfolio, and visit Toro’s Center for Technology, Research & Innovation. They were shown how Toro utilizes cutting-edge technology in the development of new products. This included experiencing the many applications of Virtual Reality in product development and watching prototype parts being 3D printed.

The group was taken to the Toro manufacturing facility at Windom, Minnesota, where they were able to see zero-turn mowers, snowblowers and specialty equipment manufactured and assembled.   Dealers were impressed by the scale of the operation, and they were able to have a Q&A session with the factory team leaders to better understand how Toro has adapted and managed through the current supply chain issues the industry is facing.

Adding a bit of Minnesota fun alongside business, the dealers had an opportunity to experience full Toro hospitality when they went to watch the Minnesota Twins play the Chicago White Sox.  Enjoying a real American institution on a glorious summer day, the dealers also saw the full Toro fleet in use at the baseball stadium in preparation for the game, before enjoying a drink and the atmosphere.

I was so pleased to be able to take a group of dealers to visit our colleagues in the US, now that Covid travel restrictions have eased,” said Craig Hoare, Sales & Marketing Manager – Toro U.K. Limited. “It was not only a way for us to say thank you to our dealers, but it was also a great opportunity to expose UK Dealers to the extensive infrastructure that backs up the UK operation and to share some of the plans, investment and products coming from Toro in the near future.”

Dealers recognised by Reesink UK: Every year Reesink UK recognises its dealers whose performance in the three areas of Service, Parts and Skills reflect outstanding customer service standards, goals and considerations.  

Reesink awards those dealers achieving the best scores in keeping with its Service Level Agreement, which benchmarks great customer service, and the highest combined score across all three categories wins an overall Dealer of the Year for Excellence in Customer Support. In 2021 that much coveted award went to Lloyd Limited in Carlisle.

Lloyd Limited also won Gold for Excellence in Skills; while Cheshire Turf Machinery topped the bill for Excellence in Service; and Excellence in Parts went to Reesink Turfcare South East.

Reesink Turfcare South East also got a silver hat-trick for Excellence in Service, Excellence in Skills and Aftermarket Dealer of Excellence; and Reesink Turfcare Scotland took home silver for Excellence in Parts.

  • The charging station has also been re-thought from scratch. Unlike conventional charging stations which sit on large plastic pads, both unpleasant to the eye and killing the grass underneath, the pad of Mission’s base is the grass.
