Euroflor delivers dazzling transformation

Euroflor delivers dazzling transformation: Seed from the Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) Euroflor range has transformed three meadow areas within Worth Park, as part of a wider conservation project underway by Crawley Borough Council.

With the aim of increasing plant diversity and providing all-important habitat and food for pollinators, the wildflowers were introduced by Head Gardener Stephen Peters using OAS’s biodegradable FloraFleece – helping to deliver maximum visual and ecological benefit, with minimal impact on the environment.

Worth Park Conservation Garden sits within 8.5 hectares of green space which has undergone a complete restoration over the last few years, making it an important community and destination venue for residents and visitors to Crawley. “The objective of the wildflower project was to provide an essential food source (nectar) for pollinators and demonstrate that making a healthier ecosystem that benefits both humans and wildlife need not be complicated or involve intensive preparations with harmful chemicals that we traditionally see” explains Stephen, who is also Horticulture Advisor to Crawley’s Tilgate and Goff Parks.

“Together with my Horticulture Apprentice Tom, we prepared three areas using the FloraFleece from OAS.” The FloraFleece is composed of 50% jute, 25% cotton, 25% brown wool and hessian scrim that acts to suppress weeds and provide an ideal seed bed for wildflowers, before biodegrading naturally over the next seven or eight months. “We just had to roll the matting out, lay three or four inches of soil over the top and sow the seed – all of which was complete in a day.”

Stephen continues, “Following many visits and conversations about the project, Mike Ring from Origin Amenity came in with a catalogue and together we opted for the Euroflor Discovery box. I really liked this option because it incorporated a range of Euroflor mixtures which would give us annuals, bi-annuals and perennials for a rich source of nectar for our pollinators and wildlife, along with maximum colour and plant diversity. These were sown in mid-March and we started to see growth in approximately six weeks.”

“The results were nothing short of beautiful. We had people taking photographs, sharing feedback on social media and we even had a local artist in her 90’s paint one of the wildflower meadows, the end result now proudly hanging in the community room of Ridley’s Court. Importantly, we have also noted a big increase in the number of pollinators we’ve seen so the project did its job and more!”

Once the flowering period was over, the meadows were harvested down to four inches with the trimmings left in piles before being passed through a small shredder. “We scattered the shredded material back over the plots and found that where the seed had been chipped through the shredding process, we saw the emergence of young seedlings growing again in less than two weeks.”

He concludes, “This project has demonstrated what can be achieved if we all look to ‘recycle, reuse, reseed and rejuvenate’. We couldn’t have hoped for a more successful trial and our aim now is to build on this with the help of OAS, to create new wildflower areas in some of the other parks under my remit.”

Suståne delivers strong and sustainable greens

Suståne delivers strong and sustainable greens: A greens programme from Suståne® has been praised for delivering sustainable, steady and healthy growth at Wildernesse Golf Club. After making the switch six years ago, Course Manager Mark Todd cites that the combination of bi-monthly granular feeds and regular liquid applications has actively encouraged the natural soil biology, helping to reduce disease occurrence and in turn costly fungicide applications.

Wildernesse is widely recognised as one of the finest courses in Kent, with tree-lined fairways and fast-paced push-up greens regularly playing host to a number of England Golf and Kent County events. On the maintenance, Mark is supported by a team of ten. “For us, sustainability begins with working with what we have, looking at ways of encouraging both the biology and the species we want for our greens” explains Mark. “We chose the organic route to be more in-keeping with the older-style construction and straight away spoke to Suståne® after hearing great feedback from other clubs.”

Suståne delivers strong and sustainable greens

“Russell Riley from Suståne® came in and, following some soil analysis, created a programme which we first trialled on our chipping greens. After just six months we could see the good results it was achieving which was when we decided to roll the programme out across all of our 20 greens.”

The programme consists of Suståne’s 4-6-4 slow-release fertiliser, 5-2-4+Fe and Suståne® Turf Revival® 6-2-4 which is applied regularly, in addition to being Mark’s ‘go-to’ for post renovation recovery. Turf Revival® 6-2-4 combines sources of water-soluble nitrogen with Suståne’s unique organic compost base which supplies a range of nutrients to enhance recovery and replenish soil – including a rich supply of humus and mycorrhizal fungi which contribute to efficient nutrient uptake and overall plant health.

“We have definitely noticed an improvement in plant health, less disease activity and steady growth – not peaks and troughs which tend to be evident with other products. We have also seen an increase in our bent population which is obviously beneficial for a more sustainable management approach moving forwards.”

Mark continues, “In addition to our regular feeds, we’ve also had great success with Suståne®’s Bolster® liquid plant biostimulant.” Bolster® is specially formulated to prepare plants for stress conditions by increasing root mass and growth, and accelerating chlorophyll production, improving its tolerance to heat, cold & frost and minimising pressure from parasitic nematodes.

DLF Colour Boost mix delivers dazzling display

DLF Colour Boost mix delivers dazzling display: The versatility of wild flowers is well documented, increasing biodiversity and delivering dazzling displays of colour to all types of public spaces and urban environments.

This year, wild flower from DLF’s Colour Boost collection made an eye-catching debut at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park on the stand of professional Chainsaw Sculptor Andy Burgess – who said that the bespoke trays of the Classical mix were being “constantly admired” by the 80,000 visitors in attendance.

DLF Colour Boost mix delivers dazzling display

Andy has completed private and public commissions all around the country over the course of the last 14 years, and has exhibited his work at most of the industries major events including the RHS Shows at Chelsea, Hampton Court and Chatsworth. “I’d been thinking about trying to integrate wild flowers into my stand for a few years as the ethos of sustainability and working with nature and natural materials fits with my product” explains Andy. “I got in touch with DLF’s Stuart Yarwood on social media who was a great help from day one and took the time to guide me through the whole process from seed to stand.”

After building bespoke seed trays from pallets, Andy chose the ‘Classical’ mix – a blend of high impact flowering varieties including Cornflower and Love-in-a-mist, in shades of blue and white. “We sowed the seed in early March and then my wife and I nurtured the flowers like children – with Stuart on hand with advice and tips to get them ready for the show at Tatton Park in July. After some careful transportation, we couldn’t have been more pleased with the end result. The flowers were knee high and delivered a swathe of colour that appeared to change on a daily basis with deadheading and new blooms coming through.”

“Close to 80,000 people came through the show over the course of the week and we had some amazing comments, with people saying our Colour Boost display made more of an impact that some of the dedicated flower gardens!”

Determined for the flowers not to go to waste, on the show closing the Classical trays were collected by a contact of Andy’s to make their next ‘star turn’. “The tree surgeon who supplies my wood also does set dressing for film and TV, so knowing that the wild flowers would be available he collected them and they’re now off to feature as part of a memorial garden in an upcoming murder mystery programme!”

More details of Andy’s projects can be found on social media – @BurgessSculptor on Twitter and @burgers44 on Instagram.

EVO 205D SAFE-Trak delivers quality and quantity

EVO 205D SAFE-Trak delivers quality and quantity: The Babraham Research Campus, one of the UK’s leading locations for academic and commercial bioscience, have taken delivery of an EVO 205D SAFE-Trak to keep pace with the site’s demand for wood chip and weed suppressant.

The 100-acre campus sits within an additional 360 acres of estate land, maintained by Estates and Waste Manager Matt Antrobus and two ground teams – all of whom have been mightily impressed with the power, performance and build quality of their new woodchipper from GreenMech’s EVO series.

EVO 205D SAFE-Trak delivers quality and quantity

EVO 205D SAFE-Trak delivers quality and quantity

“The site has grown and changed a lot over the last decade, both in terms of the variety and types of research conducted here and the push towards more environmentally-friendly methods of maintenance” explains Matt, who has been at the Campus for 15 years. “We use in the region of 300 tons of woodchip every year for suppressing weeds as well as decoration for borders, beds and miles and miles of public footpaths! Our previous chipper was struggling to cope and, after comparing a couple of options, the EVO 205D emerged head and shoulders above the competition.”

The backbone of the EVO 205D’s design is a deep beam, high tensile steel chassis, with a generous in-feed hopper measuring 1250mm x 700mm allowing the easy processing of bulky material. Maximum chipping efficiency is powered by a Kubota Stage V-Complaint 50hp diesel engine, while GreenMech’s SAFE-Trak system delivers ground clearance of up to 400mm, enabling access across uneven terrain and in difficult ground conditions.

“The EVO was installed in July by our local dealer Thurlow Nunn Standen and Julian Cullis of GreenMech, who delivered some outstanding training to the team that was on a par with – if not better than, some of the official woodchipper courses available. Although we’ve only had it a few weeks, the operators love it! The first major thing they commented on was the ease of manoeuvrability and access, meaning we can position the 205D exactly where we are working which saves a lot of time. Secondly, the feed rate is drastically quicker with this machine… the teams just can’t keep up with it!”

“There isn’t really much the team haven’t been impressed with. The build quality is fantastic and from a usability perspective, you can tell that GreenMech have really thought about what the operator wants and needs from a woodchipper.” Matt adds, “This EVO 205D will be fundamental to our new willow replanting and rotation programme which will help give us the quantity of wood and chip we need to continue our sustainable site management programme.”

Trilo S4 delivers multi-purpose performance

Trilo S4 delivers multi-purpose performance: A Trilo S4 has proven its credentials as a multi-functional machine without compromise for the team at Richmond Golf Club.

Purchased initially to assist with the mammoth task of collecting leaves from more than 3000 trees around the parkland course, the interchangeable heads and ability to flail cut and scarify has seen the S4 out and assisting with maintenance year-round.

Trilo S4 delivers multi-purpose performance

Trilo S4 delivers multi-purpose performance

Bought from local dealers Ernest Does in time for the autumn of 2019, the S4 was a straight replacement of another Trilo unit which, as Course Manager Les Howkins explains, had been a workhorse at the London club for over 20 years. “Every year, we’d go out with our Trilo SG700 and over its long working life, it never missed a beat! The build quality was fantastic on that and continues to be with our new S4 which was one of the major reasons we purchased another Trilo, despite looking at what else was available.”

“The Trilo S4 is also an ideal size for us – it features a large 4m3 hopper to collect large quantities of material but is compact enough overall to easily navigate our relatively ‘small’ 104-acre course. It is equipped with the brush head for leaf clearance between early September right through to Christmas, by the time the Oaks have dropped, and it does a fantastic job of cleanly collecting leaves and other debris in a single pass.”

Come the spring, the brush is swiftly swapped for the flail head for the quick cut and collect of acid grassland – an issue for Les and the team on the carry areas between the tees and the fairways. “This causes long, wispy growth which we cut down once a year using our S4. We then switch the flail out for a third attachment – a scarifier head – to thin out these areas before the new season begins to prevent any thick, matted growth.”

“We loved our SG700 and our S4 retains the fantastic build quality and reliability that we previously enjoyed, with the added benefit of now being able to conduct multiple maintenance tasks.” Les concludes, “With a lot of machines that are billed as ‘multi-purpose’ you find they’ll do one job really well, and not perform on the others but the S4 does all three superbly!”

Multi-Seeder delivers for Eyemouth GC

Multi-Seeder delivers for Eyemouth GC: Head Greenkeeper at Eyemouth Golf Club Keith Burgon has praised the Redexim Multi-Seeder for transforming overseeding operations at the Scottish club.

Where previously, overseeding the 18 greens would have taken the team of three more than a day to complete, with the Multi-Seeder the task takes just a matter of hours – not just resulting in major labour savings but improvements in germination too!

Multi-Seeder delivers for Eyemouth GC

Multi-Seeder delivers for Eyemouth GC

Eyemouth GC is a clifftop/links course perched on the top of Gunsgreen Hill in the Scottish Borders. Their exposed coastal location means that when it comes to seed, it’s salt-tolerant Fescues required for the greens – however without a seeder at their disposal, overseeding was limited by resources to an annual operation. “We would aerate, then broadcast the seed with a spreader, then have to manually brush the seed in and topdress which was all hugely time consuming” explains Keith, who has been at the club for seven years.

“I have used the Multi-Seeder before and have seen first-hand the fantastic results it achieves at other clubs. After speaking to Ian Lauder from Redexim, we had one in on demo from our local dealer Hendersons, so that we could check it would suit our course conditions. We had the opportunity to try it on a couple of our greens and tees, and the whole team were immediately impressed by the minimal disruption it left and the great germination that followed.”

Since taking delivery of the 1.2m wide Multi-Seeder 1200 in September 2021, it has already helped to deliver important fescues into some of the courses most exposed greens. “The twin sarel roller set-up is creating double the holes, so double the opportunity for getting seed into the ground. This undoubtedly helped us to see good germination, despite us not getting out with it until late November. The fact it is equipped with two brushes also means that an additional member of staff isn’t required to follow the Multi-Seeder round. What was previously a three-man job, is now complete in one pass.”

Keith adds, “With the growth in golf, it’s more important than ever to be able to get jobs such as overseeding done as quickly and effectively as possible. Now that we have the Multi-Seeder, not only can we overseed more frequently throughout the year to boost course condition, the clean finish means we can complete the operation prior to play commencing, and the golfers will barely notice anything has been done!”

GKB Sandfiller delivers fast, firm greens

GKB Sandfiller delivers fast, firm greens: Contractors Marc Kerr Limited have praised the GKB Sandfiller for the benefits it brings to surfaces and operator alike.

Combining thatch removal and sand injection in one single pass, Owner Marc Kerr delivered fast, firm and free-draining greens to almost 30 golf courses during 2021, with the Sandfiller getting the job done in a time and cost-effective manner for both contractor and the club.

GKB Sandfiller delivers fast, firm greens

GKB Sandfiller delivers fast, firm greens

Marc has been using the Sandfiller for the last five years, conducting work at golf courses and bowling clubs nationwide. “Some methods of organic matter management can be really labour intensive and run the risk of taking the surfaces out of play, which is not ideal given the year-round demand from the members” he explains. Prior to the Sandfiller, Marc was using another machine which required multiple people to operate and left excess spoil and sand on the green which then had to be manually collected when the job was complete. “The speed and efficiency of being able to conduct both operations, single-handedly and leaving a clean and tidy finish was the main reason for the switch.”

The GKB Sandfiller scarifies the surface down to depths of up to 40mm, removing organic matter and creating channels which are simultaneously filled with sand or a combination of sand and seed. The unit also features a 400L hopper to collect the removed material, bringing the surface back into play almost instantly.

“We’re lucky to work with clubs of all levels, with some elite venues calling us in annually or bi-annually to pass over the greens with the Sandfiller. The interesting thing is the different schools of thought around the timing of the operation. Some like it done in the spring, to give them recovery from winter wear and damage and set up strong surfaces for the start of the season. Others like it throughout July and August, where we can mix seed in with the sand to optimise germination. The final group will request a visit in the late autumn, where the lateral aeration and slit slits will allow for better drainage and help the course to sustain winter play.”

He continues, “No matter the timing, the Sandfiller brings multiple benefits to a green, including improved percolation rates and better root growth. This machine has made the job much more time and cost effective and gives the greens teams quick recovery which is absolutely critical.”
