Launched in 2020, the 40VMax and 80VMax XGT system of cordless tools have been designed to offer the power and performance needed to tackle high-demand applications without compromising battery run times. With extensions to the range coming in 2021, these cordless tools are the most durable and powerful of the Makita line-up that are available to test. This hassle-free opportunity is the perfect time to test out the Makita tools you need before they get put to work.

Scottish turfgrass demo day a success

Scottish turfgrass demo day a success: More than 100 greenkeepers, groundsmen and grounds maintenance contractors from across Scotland attended an amenity demonstration day at Falkirk Tryst Golf Club on 11th March, with those who braved the day’s stormy weather able to see some of the latest golf and sports pitch specific machinery and turf renovation equipment in action.

Featuring a range of machinery demonstrations from a wide selection of industry-leading suppliers, the maiden ‘Scottish Amenity Demonstration Day’ was jointly organised by Germinal GB, Allgrass Turfcare and Campey Turf Care Systems. The event was also sponsored by Cub Cadet, Seddon, Fairways GM, Fleet Line Markers and Steadfast Site Supplies and was kindly hosted by Falkirk Tryst Golf Club.

“Despite the weather’s best efforts to disrupt proceedings, the inaugural Scottish Amenity Demonstration Day was a great success,” explains Alan Thomson, Technical Sales Representative for Germinal in Scotland. “As a group of like-minded suppliers, we recognised that there are no amenity specific events in Scotland where greenkeepers, groundsmen and turf care professionals can talk to multiple manufacturers and suppliers in a single location.

“We therefore worked together to organise the free-to-attend event to give visitors the chance to talk freely with a range of manufacturers about the latest golf and sports-specific grass seed mixtures and to see a selection of cutting-edge turf maintenance machinery – including the latest electrical and emissions-free equipment – in action.”

John Rushforth of Allgrass Turfcare extended a special thank you to Falkirk Tryst Golf Club for hosting the event: “Head greenkeeper, Gary McCandless and his team worked miracles to ensure that, despite heavily waterlogged ground conditions and torrential rain in the days prior to the event, the majority of demonstrations were still able to go ahead.

“Unfortunately, the wet conditions did prevent some machines from operating, but the sheer number of attendees proved there’s a clear appetite for this type of event in Scotland and we are already discussing the potential for future events.”

“Feedback from the event has been extremely positive,” added Richard Heywood of Campey Turf Care. “It was genuinely very gratifying to see so many faces from within the Scottish amenity sector coming together to learn about new developments within the industry and to try out the latest amenity-specific kit. This type of event is as much about networking on a semi-social basis as it is about promoting the latest machinery, and we look forward to organising similar open days in the future.”

Bionema Demo Nematode Application

Bionema Demo Nematode Application: Bionema Ltd, a leading biopesticide technology developer, has released a new case study video for the control of chafer grubs in turf.  The video provides step by step guidelines to greenkeepers, groundsmen and course managers in how to apply the beneficial nematodes (roundworms).

Bionema has seen excellent success in recent nematode field trials conducted on the chafer infestation experienced at the Grove Golf Club, Watford. These eco-friendly and chemical free methods of destroying chafer grubs are shaping the biopesticide industry.

Bionema Demo Nematode Application

We have seen an increase in the success of nematode applications by educating users on correct application techniques” said Dr Minshad Ansari, CEO of Bionema.  Bionema’s pest control products are available through Rigby Taylor, a leading distributor to the turf and amenity sector. “Our goal is to see an improvement in nematode efficacy by educating greenkeepers, groundsmen and race course managers in the correct application of beneficial nematodes”.

The new two-minute video outlines the benefits of training and good application techniques for chafer control in turf, it also explains the importance of product quality, storage and correct handling.

As each female chafer beetle can lay 100-300 eggs in June, this treatment involves beneficial nematodes attacking and destroying the larvae of the chafer grubs therefore preventing them from developing further population.  We recommend combining the nematode application with the BeetlesAttra chafer monitoring traps for optimum results.

Bionema’s NemaTrident® – a range of beneficial nematode products are safe and non-toxic to users and the environment.  It is targeted towards specific pests and thus avoids harming beneficial insects. This safe and environmentally friendly method has a 70-100% kill rates and is on average 20-30% more effective than other nematode products on the market.

Phillip Chiverton, Course Manager at the Grove, said in the video:

“We have seen 80% reduction of chafer grubs in the first year with Bionema’s NemaTrident® solution, with continuous progress in years two and three. The product costs less money than the chemical treatment, it’s more sustainable for the environment and so is a much better way of dealing with this current issue”.

Bionema are one of the few organizations that focus on a chemical-free method of crop protection and bio-control. All products that are developed are natural products, which use fungi, bacteria and nematodes to help reduce the use of chemical pesticides as well as offering an effective treatment for regulating chafer grub as well as other common pests.

The current problem is so serious, that an emergency summit is to be held with the aim of finding industry-led solutions to the threat of Chafer Grubs and Leatherjackets in the turf industry https://bionema.com/emergency-chafers-and-leatherjackets-summit/. The Summit will take place on 9th May 2019 at Burton Albion Football, Staffordshire. Attendance at this industry summit is vital to those in the industry that want to develop a long-term preventative strategy for Chafers and Leatherjackets. There are a limited number of free places available, which can be reserved by emailing info@bionema.com.

Koro FTM At Cricket Demo Day

Koro FTM At Cricket Demo Day: Campey Turf Care Systems in association with their Cambridgeshire dealer, Scamblers, held a successful demonstration day at Clare College, Cambridge, to show what the Koro FIELD TOP-MAKER can do on a cricket square.

The Imants machine was originally used to strip the organic matter off of football pitches and has gone on to be used in rugby, golf and tennis with cricket becoming the latest adopter of the technology.

Koro FTM At Cricket Demo Day

Cambridge United use the Clare College site for training and because of this head groundsman, Robbie Nightingale knows the difference removing the organic matter can make to a football pitch and was keen to test it out on his cricket square.

“There is a lot of good quality cricket played in the county and there is an opening for a few Colleges or clubs to pitch in together to get a Koro FTM,” he explained. “Using the machine in different sports to what it was originally used for is something that’s a growing trend and you read and see a lot about people using it, so we thought we’d have a look and see what it’s about.

“Because it’s a demonstration day and the first time we used the machine we wanted to start at 3mm and go down very gradually so we could take out whatever we wanted to. Going to 3mm is ideal for us because we wouldn’t have been able to do that with the machinery that we have so it’s been a fantastic opportunity for us, and others, to see it on our own square.

30 turf professionals from 28 different cricket clubs, football clubs and colleges from the Cambridgeshire region attended the event which also included a demonstration of the Air2G2 GT Air Inject.

Campey product specialist, Simon Holland, ran the practical side of the event and has seen an increased number of cricket groundsmen enquire about using the Koro FTM on their squares.

Koro FTM At Cricket Demo Day

“Koro-ing has become more popular within cricket at all levels of the game,” he said. “I’m going to Edgbaston Cricket Ground to Koro a wicket there that has SIS Grass reinforcement, so that’ll be an interesting project to work on because it’ll be the first time it’s been done on a cricket pitch that’s reinforced.

“But although today is mainly cricket we do have people from other sports attending because they want to see the Koro FTM working. I think there’s a growing interest from the cricket side because it isn’t something they’ve adopted fully yet, but they can see the benefits of using it.

“The idea is to level the pitch, particularly the saddles, and pull 90% of the organic matter out so they’ve got a blank canvass to work with.”
