How Subaru UK & Ireland is Helping Horatio’s Garden Transform Spinal Recovery

How Subaru UK & Ireland is Helping Horatio’s Garden Transform Spinal Recovery: Subaru UK & Ireland has partnered with Horatio’s Garden, the charity which creates and expertly staffs extraordinary gardens at NHS spinal injury rehabilitation centres across the UK.

Through the partnership, Subaru UK & Ireland has donated its award-winning ‘Subaru Cocoon’ show garden, which captivated judges and visitors alike at the most recent RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, for installation at a spinal injury rehabilitation centre at Horatio’s Garden South West at Salisbury District Hospital. The formal announcement coincided with the International Day of Forests, which is celebrated annually to raise awareness about the importance of all types of forests and trees.

The garden, originally conceived to draw attention to the crisis faced by the UK’s rapidly shrinking temperate rainforest, has been sensitively adapted and repurposed to provide pleasure and a place of calm and comfort to people with spinal injuries, their families and hospital staff.

Lorraine Bishton, Managing Director at Subaru UK & Ireland, said: “From the outset, the Subaru Cocoon Garden was designed to be more than a one-off show garden; it was meant to spark debate and draw attention to an element of the natural world in need of careful preservation: our rapidly shrinking temperate rainforests. We also wanted it to live on after the show, and now, through our partnership with Horatio’s Garden, it will.

“Horatio’s Garden does extraordinary work providing spaces of genuine sanctuary and healing for people facing life-changing spinal injuries – and the loved ones who support them. Partnering with them and ensuring the garden – and its vital conservation message – would continue to thrive under their custodianship.”

Horatio’s Garden creates and expertly staffs beautiful, vibrant gardens outside the clinical starkness of NHS spinal injury centres. The gardens offer space for reflection and adjustment, privacy and solace, and moments of joy and companionship for everyone who needs them. Evidence consistently shows that access to these gardens improves mental and physical well-being, reduces pain, and supports long-term recovery for people navigating life-changing spinal injuries.

Katie Tait, CEO of Horatio’s Garden said: “A spinal injury can be a devastating blow, with many people facing months of rehabilitation and an increased risk of anxiety and depression. That’s why we are absolutely delighted that this award winning garden is being brought to life within Horatio’s Garden South West and thoughtfully adapted for people using wheelchairs or hospital beds. We are deeply grateful to Subaru for its extraordinary support and for recognising how a calming, immersive space just moments from the hospital ward can make such a transformative difference.”

Background on The Subaru Cocoon Garden

The Subaru Cocoon Garden was conceived to highlight one of the UK’s most pressing, overlooked environmental crises: the near-extinction of Britain’s temperate rainforests. Once spanning 20% of the UK and Ireland, these rich, biodiverse ecosystems have dwindled to less than 1% of their former size. The temperate rainforest is among the most threatened habitats in the UK.
Created by Subaru UK & Ireland in collaboration with the Mike McMahon Studio, the Cocoon Garden evokes the quiet majesty of the rainforest, drawing visitors into a calming environment of texture, shadow and native planting.

Before being installed in its new home, the Subaru Cocoon has been thoughtfully modified to ensure it is fully accessible and welcoming to all those who will benefit from it. Adaptations have been made with the specific needs of Horatio’s Garden patients in mind, including those using wheelchairs or requiring bed access, ensuring that the garden’s restorative qualities can be enjoyed by everyone who visits.

Green-tech Donates Landscaping Materials

Green-tech Donates Landscaping Materials: Green-tech, the leading supplier of landscaping materials, demonstrates its commitment to community support by donating a range of materials to Great Ouseburn Community Primary School in North Yorkshire. The donation aims to enhance the school’s outdoor learning and play areas, providing students with safer and more inviting environments for exploration and play.

On Saturday, 13th April 2024, Green-tech’s Managing Director, Kris Nellist, along with two staff volunteers Josh Hebden and Connor Freeman, delivered a variety of materials to the school. The donation included 110 large bags (2 pallets) of Scotbark Playbark. One of the pallets was generously donated by Scotbark, showcasing a collaborative effort in supporting the local community. Additionally, Green-tech donated 2.4m sleepers, Green-tree topsoil and enough John Chambers Dual Purpose Wildflower Seed Mix to cover 65 square meters at the front of the school.

The project aimed to revamp several key areas within the school grounds. The Early Learning area received a makeover with the installation of sleepers and topsoil to build up the existing digging play pit. Playbark was installed to augment the safety and aesthetics of the playground climbing area, creating a cleaner and more inviting space for children to enjoy. The wildflower seeds will create a vibrant ‘mini-meadow’ in the front garden, fostering biodiversity and supporting insect habitats.

Nick Oswald, Headteacher at Great Ouseburn Community Primary School, expressed gratitude for Green-tech’s support, stating, “We were delighted to receive support from Green-tech with a kind donation of materials for our outdoor learning and play areas. Green-tech staff listened to what we needed and offered several suggestions. Along with one of their manufacturers, Scotbark, they provided a huge quantity of fabulous, attractive, high-quality play bark, which not only makes our Early Years outdoor learning area and play equipment safer to use, but cleaner and more inviting for all children. It is now a fun place to learn, and it is noticeable how much more it is used since the bark delivery!

Early Years have also now got a planting pit where we can grow plants, fruit and flowers, learning how to make things grow. Green-tech has also provided wildflower seeds for our ‘mini-meadow’, which we will use to encourage and support insect habitats, including bees. None of this would be possible without their support so a big thank you to Green-tech.”

Green-tech’s Managing Director Kris Nellist adds, “I am thrilled to be able to help improve the learning environment for some local children. Green-tech’s involvement in the project is part of the company’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and giving back to the community. By donating materials to revamp the school’s outdoor spaces, we hope to create an interest and appreciation, and encourage environmental stewardship from an early age.”

Matthew Coleman, UK Sales Manager for Professional Landscape Contractor & Siteworks Equipment at Hayter and Toro, oversaw the donation of the mower to the estate: “We are so happy that we could help by donating a Harrier 56 Pro to Stephen and Graham who are extremely dedicated to keeping such a beautiful site in amazing condition. The Harrier 56 Pro is the perfect mower to help them get the job done effectively and efficiently.”

The Harrier 56 Pro has a 53cm rear-roller that provides the widest stripe in its class, which will allow Stephen and Graham to not only ensure the classic British striped finish, but to also increase productivity by reducing mowing time. The lawnmower is manufactured from steel for strength and durability and features a two-piece rear roller design, ensuring superb manoeuvrability and avoids any turf marking.

Matthew continued: “The Copped Hall Estate is a lovely place to visit and being so close to our headquarters in Spellbrook, it’s a great feeling to be helping a local organisation and heritage site keep up its appearance.”

Stephen Potts, from the grounds management team at Copped Hall said: “We are incredibly thankful to Matthew and the rest of the team at Hayter for the donation of the Harrier 56 Pro – it’s a brilliant feeling to be able to add such a great piece of machinery to our equipment.

“Matthew delivered the lawnmower and explained its operation to us and was extremely polite and helpful while doing so. It was a real pleasure working with him and we are incredibly grateful for such a generous donation from Hayter.”
