Managing Director Sandy Armit was at the recent BTME exhibition in Harrogate to receive the award.  “Winning the Campey award of Best Dealer of the Year is a very welcome recognition of the hard work of the whole team that occurs on a daily basis, and this only happens if we are all performing, whether that is sales, administration, parts or service. Everyone plays their part in creating a business customers want to buy from, and we can be very proud of that achievement.”

Recognised as ‘Scotland’s Leading Supplier of Groundcare Equipment’, Double A has been a Campey dealer for some 20 years. Sandy explains “We were approached by the late David Briggs from Campeys to take on the Dakota in 2004, which became our best-selling product. This opened a new and expanding market for us which we have since developed with sales of many Vredo Seeders, Shockwaves, Field Top Makers, and Air2 G2 Air Injection machines. The Campey range is so diverse and allows us to offer to a wide range of golf, commercial and local authority sports applications.”

Campey Turf Care Systems is one of Europe’s largest independent grounds care machinery dealers, supplying equipment to countries in most parts of the world.  Over the years Campeys have earned a reputation for offering practical advice and superb aftercare service. The company acts as a new equipment dealer for some of the most respected grounds care machinery manufacturers including Dakota, Imants, Koro, Raycam, Vredo, Votex, GT Air 2G2 injector and Air 1 Injector aerator.

The company also has a thriving used machinery business and a subsidiary company, Tines Direct, which supplies replacement tines, blades, and replacement parts for a wide range of turf care machinery.

Responsibility for supplying Double A Trading Company is now in the capable hands of Campey product specialist Richard Heywood and the two companies continue to work together promoting Campey products across Scotland. “It is a pleasure to work with Sandy and the brilliant team at Double A.” said Richard “We strive to assimilate the customers’ needs with our product range and good communication is essential.”

“This direct support from Campey is key to our success and provides an invaluable benefit for the customer.” said Sandy “We have grown the business steadily since 1996 but have had growth in the last 5 years opening a new outlet in Aberdeenshire and taking over responsibility for John Deere Turf Equipment in the West of Scotland. Doing all of this through Covid and Brexit has had its challenges so now we are in a period of consolidation making investment in people and training to ensure each part of our business is working at optimum performance before we move on to the next stage of our journey.

EVO woodchippers at the double

EVO woodchippers at the double: As a longstanding GreenMech customer, Rob Drinkwater of Drinkwater Tree Services is the latest in a growing list of tree surgeons to be seriously impressed by the improvements made with their revolutionary EVO Series… so much so, he bought two!

Delivered in early 2022, the 6” EVO 165P was swiftly joined by an 8” EVO 205D just a few weeks later, both of which are delivering performance on par with the first-class GreenMech service and support.

Rob set up on his own 17 years ago and undertakes all areas of domestic tree and hedge maintenance, alongside his team of four, in and around Weston-Super-Mare. “I have always used GreenMech woodchippers, mostly because the advice and support we’ve had from them and our local dealer – GA Groundcare – over the years has always been second to none” says Rob. “When the time was right to upgrade, we asked GA Groundcare what they had, and they brought along the EVO 165P. My team and I were so impressed by what we saw we didn’t even ask the price!”

The EVO 165P Sub-750 features all the key elements of the EVO series such as a wide infeed chute, horizontal rollers and heavy-duty flywheel in a sub 750kg package – powered by a 37hp Briggs & Stratton Vanguard petrol engine. “The beauty of this machine is the manoeuvrability. It’s light and nimble enough for us to get it right where we want it for domestic jobs. It’s the perfect combination of versatility, performance and power.”

“We then wanted a larger machine for take downs and site clearances so the EVO 205D was the obvious choice. The power from the 50hp engine means we can process large material, really quickly and despite its size, it’s surprisingly quiet. That is great when we’re working in close proximity to buildings.” The backbone of the EVO 205D’s design is a deep beam, high tensile steel chassis providing tremendous strength and robust performance – whilst providing unrivalled protection and noise insulation for the engine.

“Having both a 6” and 8” machine on our fleet means we have the flexibility to choose the best machine to suit the job at hand.” Rob concludes, “The design and developments with the EVO series are evident. It’s great to see GreenMech with a product that’s now on par with competitor offerings, and that matches the other areas of their offering which have always been excellent.”

Jacobsen mowing double a class act

Jacobsen mowing double a class act: Two new additions to the mowing fleet at Mearns Castle Golf Academy are helping head greenkeeper, Jack Glen, and his team deal with their ‘grass factory’.

Mearns Castle Golf Academy has both a nine-hole golf course and 50 covered driving range bays in Glasgow’s southside.  The parkland course is both challenging and scenic, so attracts a strong membership and has very many visitors.

In their first delivery, Jack and his team received a super light Jacobsen SLF 530 ride on reels mower which made an immediate impact on the fairways.

“It gets all nine done in around 5 hours. It also never makes any mess because of its light footprint; so no tyre tracks or impressions, just always neat. We gave it a go on the tees and approaches using the grass boxes and it does those beautifully, too. I’m really pleased. It’s doing more than we bargained and to a higher level of presentation,” began Jack.

Next to arrive was a Jacobsen GP 400 ride on greens mower. Offering a precise cut, it has a swing our centre unit for easy maintenance and adjustment, and legendary Jake cutting units that are hugely regarded across the industry.

“I can’t fault it. It’s every bit as good as I’d hoped. It gives a super exact cut. Both machines are terrific, and I’m really pleased,” said Jack.

Jack (centre) began as a 17-year-old apprentice at the East Renfrewshire club and has worked his way through the ranks to head greenkeeper. He is joined by (l-r) Fraser Stewart, 1st assistant, (right) Euan Mack, seasonal course and range assistant (2nd right), Russell Aird asst greenkeeper, (2nd left) and Peter Lafferty, asst greenkeeper (on machine).

Double Jake arrival boosts presentation

Double Jake arrival boosts presentation: Head Greenkeeper, Andy Kirk, at Shotts Golf Club had good reason to smile when dealer Fairways GM delivered both a new Jacobsen GP 400 ride-on reels mower and a Jacobsen AR331 side-shifting rotary mower in April.

“Thanks to Bob Marshall and the team from Fairways GM, it was ‘new toy’ day,” he said, “but importantly, I knew they would instantly make a difference and save a whole lot of time.”

Andy, himself only joined the North Lanarkshire club in July 2020, after a spell as Deputy Head Greenkeeper at Crowwood and ten years previously at Gleneagles.

“Arriving in a pandemic was different but you get on with it. We had a very busy winter putting in much needed drainage and more of the same will happen this winter.  Steadily things are going in the right direction.

“The GP400 is massively improving the quality of the surfaces of the tees and approaches.  It’s upped the presentation level while cutting everything to a great standard quickly, so we’re winning on lots of fronts.

“Same with the AR331. Presentation with it is first class.  I use it frequently for striping off tees, then following around the edges of the greens with its tighter cut.  It’s got lots of applications. Where it comes into its own is cutting the tee bankings, a task done fortnightly.  We’re only a team of three so anything that saves us time is crucial. We can get around them all comfortably and safely in a morning where as before, with strimming and hand tools, that would have been a day and a half.  It just frees us up for other duties to make progress elsewhere.”

Fairways GM and Shotts GC enjoy a strong relationship with the club already benefiting from many Jacobsen machines within their fleet.

Jacobsen double from Fairways GM

Jacobsen double from Fairways GM: Track Manager, Darren Bissett, says Hamilton Park’s turf will be more than ready for the start of their flat racing season scheduled to begin in May.

“Course maintenance wise we are on schedule with the first cut of both the track and the lawns due within the next week, assuming conditions prevail,” said Darren.

Darren joined the team at Hamilton Park from Ayr Racecourse exactly 12 months ago, and his first year in the job could hardly have been more unexpected.

In June 2020, a delayed and shortened fixture list got underway with eleven race meetings successfully staged behind closed doors by the time the season concluded at the end of September.

One huge positive for 2020 was that local grounds care dealer, Fairways GM, delivered two new Jacobsen mowers – the HR500 Rotary Mower for the track and the TR320 for Hamilton Park’s extensive fine turf areas.

“The machines were ordered by my predecessor after several very positive recommendations. They’ve worked fantastically and I’m genuinely very impressed at how effective they are. The HR500 has great width at 3.5 metres which allows us to cut the whole track with just five circuits in around 2.5 hours. It makes quick work and leaves a very clean cut.  The room that you get in the cab is exceptional; really spacious, so it’s great for the operator. Also, once you are finished, it’s incredibly easy to maintain.

“In March, we will probably only cut the track once a week until it gets a bit warmer and soil temperatures rise, however come May we’ll have increased that to at least twice a week.  Over the summer months cutting increases to three or four times a week as the fertilisation programme takes effect.

During the racing season we like to cut the day before a fixture, and then again 48 hours afterwards. Height of the cut is set at 6cm for the next month or so and when racing starts, we’ll allow it to grow a bit longer before cutting it to around 9cm. Changing the height of cut on the decks takes around half an hour and it’s a case of moving just ten pins, so it’s very straightforward.”

“Away from the track, our lawns are a great backdrop for weddings and events as well as racedays, and hopefully this summer they will see a lot more visitors. Because it’s been a bit milder these past few weeks the lawns are starting to grow. The TR320 delivers an exceptionally fine, effective cut and it is so good at striping the lawns and leaving a professional finish – everything is really level. We cut the track and the lawns on the same day so there will be times when we are cutting lawns four times a week throughout the summer.

Last year, sadly, we were unable to welcome racegoers and event guests alike and so we’re working hard to ensure the grounds will be at their spectacular best for when we can open our gates to the public once more.

Rob Hogarth, Fairways GM’s Area Sales Manager, said: The HR500 can cut all day long.  Robust and smooth, it has built in consistency delivered via a feature called Automated Assist Drive, so no matter the conditions the finish remains clean and sharp. The big cab that Darren likes gives the operator a superior view of what’s going on out-front; controls are positioned exactly where they are required, so you can also be extremely precise. The TR320 is good in tight spaces and challenging terrain.  It’s a wizard at stripes so is great at keeping locations pristine and interesting, a nice touch for important wedding photography.”
