Barry lands exciting new role

Barry lands exciting new role: When people say the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, Barry Browne is among those who scan the landscape and honestly say that for him and his team it absolutely is.

With 20 years of industry experience Barry is ideally positioned to lead the growth of ProGreen, a highly-regarded business which supports a range of sectors around the UK and Ireland.

Barry lands exciting new role

Barry lands exciting new role

ProGreen, owned by the part employee-owned WCF Ltd, is a specialist business which ensures the likes of top golf courses, Premier League football pitches, famous country houses and estates, Commonwealth War Graves and a range of landscaping environments including holiday parks and highways, look their best thanks to their market leading products, bespoke training and expert advisers.

ProGreen is well-known for offering trusted advice with its knowledgeable and professionally qualified team ensuring its customers receive the optimum product or service for their needs.

It also offers both conventional classroom-based training on the safe use of pesticides and e-learning courses in a range of sectors.

Through its own Peterborough-based operation and its link-up with Amazon it supplies a wide range of weed killers, moss and algae control products, fertilisers and grass seed, as well as providing a comprehensive range of sprayers, granule application equipment and accessories.

Barry, who was appointed as ProGreen’s General Manager earlier this year, knows this industry inside out, and when the opportunity arose to join the company he knew it was an ideal fit.

Barry said: “When I met with Phil Muray (WCF’s Deputy Managing Director) I knew that ProGreen and I were on the same journey.

“I know how to grow this business and what its potential can be. It can really take off from where it is. It is highly regarded and trusted by its suppliers and customers and has an ideal platform to grow.

“The team here is amazing. The level of qualifications they have and the specialist knowledge they can share with customers is second to none. From soil analysis to their training portfolio, from fertilisers to sprayers, they are trained to give the best possible advice so that customers get the right products for their particular situation and scenario at the right price.

“We build long-term relationships with customers, whether that’s large businesses and organisations or individual consumers – we treat them all with the same attention and respect.

“They trust our advice and our products and we are there for them to hold their hand and share our knowledge with them through the process.”

Among the diverse sectors of ProGreen’s corporate clients are:

  • agriculture businesses
  • commercial contract spraying companies
  • football clubs
  • golf courses
  • local authorities
  • highways
  • housing developers
  • shopping centres and retail parks

ProGreen also ensures its team are trained to give the latest up-to-date advice on a range of emerging topics, from Biodiversity Net Gain legislation with advice on trees, grasses, meadows and wildflowers; to the latest changes in planning developments; from advice on dealing with invasive plants like knotweed, buddleia and bamboo to some of the more unusual issues such as from outbreaks of bed bugs affecting the hotel and leisure industry.

“We can advise customers on a whole range of issues,” said Barry. “When housing developers are wanting a wildflower meadow for example we are able to advise on the best UK native wildflowers which will support the British bee population, which in turn will provide the best, long-term, sustainable net gain.

“Whatever the challenge, the ProGreen team is available to discuss the best solution for the customer,” said Barry.

Phil said: “We are delighted to have brought Barry on board to lead our expert team at ProGreen. Barry is an ideal fit for our business and our people and brings with him more than 20 years of experience in this sector.

“We are excited about how the company can grow by expanding our offering and building on our excellent reputation for providing our customers with top quality advice, training, products and services.”

Redexim’s exciting start to 2023

Redexim’s exciting start to 2023: Proving that good things can come in threes, Redexim have announced a trio of new machines launching in their natural turf maintenance portfolio for 2023.

First up, and promising to deliver enhanced adaptability to topdressing operations, is the new Rink DS1600 featuring improved functionality with all-new electronic controls. An alternative topdressing solution will also be available in the shape of the redesigned Redexim Multivator, while those looking for an all-in-one ground preparation tool will be impressed with the new additions to the Blecavator range.

Redexim's exciting start to 2023

Redexim’s exciting start to 2023

The Rink DS1600 disc spreader is ideal for those following the ‘little and often’ approach to topdressing. Accommodating spreading widths of between 2m and 14m, the DS1600 features a large 1.6m3 hopper which means fewer trips back to the shed to refill. A range of parameters including throw, belt speed and spreading thickness can all now be quickly and easily adjusted via new electronic controls accessible from the operator’s seat. Efficiency can be further enhanced through an optional digital control unit which allows the operator to pre-set spreading rates ensuring quick and consistent set-up every time. Four large tyres keeping ground pressure to a minimum, making the DS1600 the versatile dresser for tasks throughout the season.

If access or cost implications are restricting the ability to topdress, then the newly redesigned Multivator 1800 could provide the answer. Featuring a roller equipped with nine blades spaced at 200mm, the Multivator decompacts and simultaneously lifts buried soil and rootzone material to the surface to provide an environmentally-effective method of dressing. Completing the operation in a single pass, the operator can also specify an additional front knife roller and optional rear brush to distribute the material for a play-ready finish.

Under the guidance of Redexim’s expert design team, the Blecavator will also be re-engineered and re-launching in two new widths during 2023. The updated Blecavator 145 (1.45m) and 210 (2.1m) models are the ultimate ground preparation multi-tasker – screening stones, debris and levelling the ground ready for the next stage of any grounds work project. Designed to be compact yet capable, the heavy-duty gearbox and drive transmission ensures maximum power is delivered to the rotor to handle all types of soil conditions, while the adjustable screening bar and rear roller leave a uniform finish.

More information can be found on the new and exciting additions, as each are showcased at various events over the coming months starting with the Rink DS1600 – making its debut on stand 532 at BTME, Europe’s premier turf management exhibition, in Harrogate (UK) this January.  Following this in February, visitors to the GCSAA trade show in Orlando, Florida can see the Multivator 1800 on the Redexim booth, number 2527.

Further details on these, and the rest of the Redexim turf equipment range, can be accessed by visiting www.redexim.com

G860 signals exciting times at Boston

G860 signals exciting times at Boston: Jim Portas, head groundsman at Boston United FC, has explained how a new Dennis G860 is helping him to deliver the best pitch he possibly can at the club’s new stadium.

The Dennis G860 and range of cassettes was purchased by Burdens Group for Boston United as part of a sponsorship agreement with the club at the new stadium.

Last year, work commenced to construct Boston United’s new stadium. The club’s chairman, David Newton, said that the new build was to give Boston United and its community foundation a secure future.

“This new stadium is the start of an exciting new era,” said Jim. “It is giving us our own place and it is a far better pitch than we had at York Street. The chairman has promised fans that we will deliver the best ground we possibly can, and we’re working towards that goal.”

The multi-million-pound project includes a recently constructed fibre sand pitch and it is for this reason that Jim decided that new turf maintenance equipment was essential.

“At our old pitch we were always supplied a mower from Burdens Group. However, going to this fantastic new pitch we needed something new; a premium mower which would benefit the pitch.

“We did a bit of research, looked at a lot of different brands and I decided that I really liked the Dennis G860 cylinder mower. It seemed to be the best option for a football pitch.”

Jim isn’t the only groundsman to be of this opinion as many of his peers have long relied on the Dennis G860 to provide the perfect cut for sports turf. Lightweight at just 166kg; it is easy to manoeuvre and comfortable to operate. The handlebar console houses the controls for – throttle, parking brake, roller drive and cutting cylinder drive.

The mower features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish on every occasion. The Dennis G860 also features an interchangeable cassette system to assist with a wide range of tasks such as including scarifying, verticutting, brushing, spiking, and slitting.

“We’ve got five of the cassettes – which is my favourite aspect of the G860,” continued Jim. “The ability to carry out various jobs with just one power unit is so beneficial. In the past we have had to rely on pieces of equipment from Burdens Group. With the G860, we no longer have this problem. We simply put in whichever cassette we need and off we go. It’s so easy to change the cassette over as well.

“The G860 is a sturdy, reliable piece of machinery and it gives a perfect finish every time. I’m cutting at a length of 30mm at the minute while we are not playing, and on matchdays it will be between 25mm and 30mm depending on what the manager requires.

“It’s just a pleasure to use. With a new stadium, a new pitch, and a new mower – it certainly is exciting times here at Boston United FC. I would also like to thank Norman Burden and the Burdens Group for their continued support.”
