“It’s been superb!” Compact sprayer gets top praise: The demands from spraying contractors extend far beyond just reliability when it comes to their sprayers. Strength, durability, and flexibility are all factors that need to be considered for the operator to tackle a wide range of spraying situations.

UK compact sprayer manufacturer Martin Lishman Ltd has embraced industry changes and stringent customer requirements to drive the development of their sprayer range to the point where they now offer a whole plethora of options and sizes to cater for almost any situation.

The spraying sector of the business covers agriculture, sports turf, and amenity sites across the UK. A continually growing list of clients meant it was time for him to expand his sprayer fleet.

For Sam the choice was easy – another Martin Lishman sprayer: “We bought our first Martin Lishman sprayer 4 years ago, a 400-litre model with a 6-metre boom, and it’s been superb! So much so, that we haven’t replaced but added to the fleet with a new 600 litre, 8m metre boom pro-specification version. The tractor mounted option suits our needs for transport and utilises the compact tractors we have. The new sprayer also joins a new Martin Lishman compact 70 litre quad bike sprayer with a 3 metre boom for smaller jobs.”

Combining amenity specification and flexibility with agricultural strength and durability has been the key design element of Martin Lishman compact sprayers since production began in the 1980’s. Designed and manufactured in England at their site in Bourne, Lincolnshire, specialist or bespoke requests can often be catered for. Their design allows considerable variation of models to meet the specialist needs of customers, with many looking to diversify into a wide range of spraying jobs.

“The need for a solid design for amenity work became clear very quickly” explains Gavin Lishman, Managing Director of Martin Lishman Ltd. “In the early days we designed our sprayers for use in agriculture; we had the experience and a strong foothold in the industry, so we knew what we were up against. The sprayers needed to be able to withstand the rigors of farm use and always work when needed. As the demand for small sprayers grew in the amenity market, we were ready to bring our tried and tested designs into the industry. We are starting to see more contractors like Sam cover both the agriculture and amenity sectors, and we believe that our sprayers are almost unique on the market in offering the range and versatility needed for this kind of work”.

The Martin Lishman compact sprayer range includes trailed, ATV mounted, demountable and self-propelled models with tank sizes ranging from 70 to 600 litres and boom widths from 1 metre to 8 metres. Sam’s new pro-spec tractor mounted sprayer consists of a 600-litre tank, PTO-driven pump, 8m pro-spec folding boom, 9m hose reel with hand lance, full electric controls, chemical induction hopper and bout marker.

“The sprayer is mainly used for liquid fertiliser and herbicide applications, our compact tractors run on auto steer GPS guidance to ensure total accuracy”, explains Sam. “The new sprayer has been very reliable, and full credit goes to your workshop team should I need any replacement nozzles, pipes or wearing parts. The service from Martin Lishman has been exemplary, and I look forward to many more years of business together as we expand.”

RTV gets winter-ready: Are you ready for the big freeze? Greenacres Landscape Management is, having equipped its Kubota RTV X-1110 with a purpose-built Hilltip snowplough and gritter combination.

The Milton Keynes-based contractor undertakes winter maintenance work on behalf of a national company, mainly using pick-up truck-based spreaders in industrial estates and military bases.

But some jobs require equipment that is a bit more specialised, as director Andy Powell explains.

‘We’ve had the contract at a Bedfordshire defence manufacturer for a couple of years, and we find that the Kubota RTV is the ideal machine to base on their site for the winter months. It’s a tricky site with lots of footpaths and restricted access, but we can cover it in an evening using the RTV and ensure that the health and safety requirements for the site’s employees are met.”

Andy explains that the RTV was originally fitted with a tailgate-mounted gritter and manual snowblade, but when Kubota dealer George Browns suggested the Hilltip outfit, it offered the perfect solution.

“The gritter has a large stainless steel hopper which will treat the site in two fills, with an auger in the bottom to loosen compacted salt and stainless steel spinning disc to spread the material,” he says.

Control of the electrically-powered gritter is via a switchbox from the comfort of the RTV’s cab, with an LED display showing the selected application rate, which can vary from 20-30g/sqm depending on conditions.

“We would use more after rain and then freezing conditions or can adjust it on the move to treat a particularly icy patch,” explains Andy. “There is also a joystick giving fingertip control of the height or angling of the snow blade.”

A full cab is fitted to the RTV, essential for winter work, Andy points out, but also useful when the Kubota is used for other jobs such as grass harrowing, protecting the operator from dust.

“The RTV is very straightforward to drive with its CVT transmission and there’s plenty of traction; we rarely go out of high box. We’ve also stuck with all-purpose tyres since it spends such a lot of the time on hard surfaces.”

The outfit was specified and installed by George Browns, who have also made a few other modifications – a rubber flap between the cab and cargo box to deflect any salt spillage when the hopper is being filled and another flap at the base of the box to protect the suspension from the corrosive action of the salt.

“We get a great service from George Browns and we’ve purchased other Kubota equipment from the company, which is all very robust and well-built.”

When spring comes around, there’s no rest for the RTV. With a canopy fitted to the cargo bay in place of the gritter, work then switches to the Milton Keynes Parks Trust, maintaining hedges, trees and shrubs on the city’s extensive network of footpaths and spreading grass seeds on new build projects.

“Operators can have their tools with them at all times rather than having to park up a truck at the roadside. We wouldn’t be without the RTV, and having dedicated attachments like the Hilltip winter outfit makes it even more useful.”

JCB hydrogen engines gets £100 injection: JCB is investing £100 million on a project to produce super-efficient hydrogen engines, the company announced today.

A team of 100 engineers is already working on the exciting development with the recruitment of up to 50 more engineers under way as JCB targets the end of 2022 for the first machines to be available for sale to customers.

The wraps have already come off a prototype hydrogen powered JCB backhoe loader and a second JCB machine – a Loadall telescopic handler – was today unveiled at a central London event attended by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. JCB is world market leader for both backhoe loaders and telescopic handlers.

JCB’s hydrogen technology will be next on show in the Green Zone at COP26 in Glasgow as world leaders debate measures to drastically reduce greenhouse emissions. JCB’s emergence as a leader in zero-emission hydrogen technology comes as governments around the world unveil strategies to develop the infrastructure needed to support the use of hydrogen to drive down CO2 emissions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Great British manufacturers like JCB are developing innovative solutions to slash greenhouse emissions and advance the UK’s green industrial revolution.  It was fantastic to see JCB’s super-efficient hydrogen engines, which could overhaul UK manufacturing, help us to rapidly reach our climate targets and ramp up the UK’s hydrogen economy – an exciting area that will be essential to tackling climate change, creating new jobs and attracting investment.”

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “Our sort of machinery will need to be powered by something other than fossil fuels. We make machines which are powered by diesel so we have to find a solution and we are doing something about it now.  We are investing in hydrogen as we don’t see electric being the all-round solution, particularly not for our industry because it can only be used to power smaller machines. It does mean we will carry on making engines, but they will be super-efficient, affordable, high-tech hydrogen motors with zero CO2 emissions, which can be brought to market quickly using our existing supply base. These will be our industry’s first hydrogen engines, developed in Great Britain by British engineers. Hydrogen motors have the potential to help the UK reach CO2 emissions targets more quickly.”
JCB has manufactured engines since 2004, producing them at plants in Derbyshire and in Delhi, India. This year JCB will celebrate a major milestone: the production of its 750,000th engine.

Thornbury Golf Centre gets green light: Located near Bristol, Thornbury Golf Centre is set to embark on an exciting £600,000 irrigation investment project which is designed to amplify the look and playability of both golf courses, while also dramatically improving maintenance efficiency.

The project – funded by club owner and operator, Burhill Group Limited (BGL) – represents the group’s unwavering dedication to facility improvement and enhanced member and customer experience, while also reflecting a surge in membership numbers at all 10 clubs in recent years.

The first phase of the project will cost around £275,000 and will see the foundations laid across both golf courses for the installation of a new high-tech irrigation system that will include tee boxes, fairways, approaches and greens. Crucially, the new system will allow the club to better manage the amount of moisture in the ground, making the courses more playable, all year round.

Once completed, the new irrigation system will be controlled via mobile device or computer, allowing maintenance teams to control the conditioning of the golf courses, 24-hours a day. This will make a huge difference to staff efficiency and will also help to deliver an exceptional golf experience that can be enjoyed by club members, guests, and visitors.

Tim Good, General Manager of Thornbury Golf Centre, said: “We are delighted to have been afforded this opportunity by BGL, to make further enhancements to our facility. We are committed to delivering the very best golfing experience for our members and guests, and this is the next step along our road of continuous improvement.”
