DLF to deliver hands on educational experience at BTME: DLF Seeds are set to inspire and educate visitors at BTME 2026 with the launch of the brand new interactive ‘DLF Seed Lab’. Building on the success of previous years, the Seed Lab has been designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice – offering greenkeepers, grounds staff and turf professionals the opportunity to deepen their understanding and get hands-on with different turf grass species.

Complementing DLF’s Seed Identification Course at the Continue to Learn education programme, visitors to stand 124 will be able to see examples of managed turf and plants from key turf grass species. Seed samples and identification displays will also highlight the distinguishing characteristics of all major turf types, while live demonstrations will showcase the principles of seed quality and purity.

Together with expanding knowledge, a stop by the DLF Stand will also form part of the BASIS trail, enabling visitors to build points as part of their BTME visit.

In addition, the technical team will be discussing the latest developments in the DLF Disease Watch programme – steering cultivar and breeding programmes to develop more effective and sustainable seed solutions to tackle disease patterns across Europe head-on. One of many notable successes from this programme has been the development of DLF 4Turf tetraploid ryegrass, with improved drought and disease resistance combined with improved colour and fast establishment making them an ideal choice for turf managers looking to improve surface quality and reduce input costs.

Visitors are invited to find out more about 4Turf and all the latest updates across DLF’s market-leading Johnsons Sports Seed, Masterline and MM seed ranges together with the extensive native and high-impact wildflower collections when BTME returns to Harrogate Convention Centre on 20th to 22nd January 2026. Whether your aim to is improve your seed ID skills, explore new mixtures or be the first to learn about the latest advances in seed technology, stand 124 is one not to miss!

Richard Aldous​​​​, Clerk of the Course, Gt Yarmouth & Regional Clerk (East) shared: “We find Shadow so useful, he keeps the height of cut regulated in all weathers and at all times of the year.  This robot cuts our parade ring daily and five other lawns 3 days a week, but is out every day working somewhere. The saving of staff hours allows them to do other important jobs.  The presentation of our site is very important to us as a business, and especially being part of ARENA RACING COMPANY.”

With racing events dating back to 1715, Great Yarmouth boasts more than 300 years of proud horseracing history. The racecourse, which was moved from South Yarmouth to its current location in the 1920s, now stages a vibrant summer season of 24 flat race meetings, drawing top jockeys and spotlighting promising two-year-old horses, some of which progress to win major international races in places such as the USA and Brazil.

Richard continued, “We love the mower, it saves staff time, keeps our lawns in good order all year round and surprisingly, I find people standing watching it, saying they find it therapeutic!”

Now that’s what the STIGA team loves to hear: a mower that cuts grass and delivers a little slice of Zen! Hooray for Shadow of Light!”

New course in the best possible hands: Ingestre Park Golf Club has relied heavily upon distributor Reesink Hydro-Scapes’s range of products as it created 12 new and upgraded six existing holes at its course in Staffordshire, with Toro providing the irrigation and Otterbine the lake aerating fountains for the project.

440 Toro Flex sprinklers were used for the greens, approaches and fairways and 159 T5 sprinklers on the tees, all of which are controlled by the Toro Lynx central control system with Lynx Smart modules. Five Otterbine Concept 3 lake aerating fountains keep the water of three lakes clean and clear and make a striking attraction.

International Design Group and MJ Abbott Ltd designed the course with Phil Helmn, as the golf course advisor, responsible for ensuring the project was carried out meeting the time frame of the planners. Here Phil explains the process: “When Ingestre Park Golf Club learned the proposed path of a new high-speed train was going to go through the course eight years ago, it took this as an opportunity to thrive. Excellent choices were made in selecting the right partners and the right tender plans.

“The bid included Toro irrigation in a one, not three, row formation with a couple of landing zones. The Lynx central control system really came into its own in the growing in phase. The ground must always be kept damp with water being applied every two hours for two minutes.

“If there were weather changes Lynx alerted us and application tweaks could be made – even from a sunlounger in Cyprus at one point! The level of detail and intuitive control Lynx provides is what’s needed when it comes to the application of water especially at this delicate stage and for safeguarding this commodity.”

Speaking of safeguarding water, Otterbine plays a role in this too, says Phil: “We were conscious of being set up to be as self-reliant as possible and know that everything has been done to harvest water. The site is very wet, and we needed a robust drainage system. Now we have a system that collects water into three lakes, all of which are interconnected, with Concept 3 aeration units installed from Otterbine to keep the water good for irrigating. We’ve also got a borehole to top up when needed and all this allows us to stay off the main water supply as much as possible.”

Now that the growing phase is over, Phil and the team continue to rely on the remote easy access accuracy of Toro’s Lynx, as Phil explains: “We irrigate at night or early in the morning and it’s so easy to control this should weather circumstances change from the time of pre-set. When you consider the warmer temperatures of the last few years and the prediction this will continue, to know our new course is in the best possible hands with the technology of Toro and Otterbine is particularly reassuring.”

Future of greenkeeping in safe hands: Toro, Reesink Turfcare and the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), have revealed the finalists of their prestigious annual awards, which seek to uncover the UK’s leading student greenkeepers.

Each year the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards enable BIGGA, the UK’s only membership association for golf greenkeepers, to work alongside turf maintenance equipment manufacturer Toro and distributor Reesink Turfcare to celebrate the next generation of talented and dedicated greenkeepers.

Future of greenkeeping in safe hands

A record 54 nominees from across the United Kingdom were put forward by educators, course managers and head greenkeepers and other mentors. From those candidates, a final 12 have been chosen to contest the grand finals this September.

For the first time, the finals of the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year will take place at Goodwood, the historic sporting venue located in West Sussex. The awards event will take place a week before the estate hosts Goodwood Revival, the famous weekend of classic racing. Goodwood is also home to the Downs Course, described by Justin Rose as a “truly inspirational” place to play golf.

September’s event will be the 33rd staging of the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards and just the sixth time the Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award, open to greenkeepers aged 21 or under, will take place. To be eligible to take part, candidates must be registered on a qualifying greenkeeping qualification and must be nominated by their course manager or college tutor.

The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year finalists are:

  • Andrew Bate, Hesketh Golf Club
  • Tom Bromfield, Trentham Golf Club
  • James Gaskell, Ripon City Golf Club
  • Abi Laker, Frilford Heath Golf Club
  • Andrew Ritchie, St Andrews Links
  • John Thornton, Hellidon Lakes Golf and Country Club

The Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year finalists are:

  • Jake Beech, Newcastle-under-Lyme Golf Club
  • Alfie Brookes, Gathurst Golf Club
  • Luke Charnley, Royal Liverpool Golf Club
  • Peter Pattenden, Carden Park Golf Club
  • James Stratford, Broome Manor Golf Club
  • Freddie Williams, Dudsbury Golf Club

The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year winner will receive: enrolment in the 10-week University of Massachusetts Winter Turf School; a two-week expenses-paid placement at Adare Manor, venue of The 2027 Ryder Cup; an all expenses paid trip to the GCSAA Conference and Show in Florida; and a visit to Toro Corporate HQ, R&D Centre and Equipment Operations in Wisconsin.

The Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year winner will receive: a two-week work placement at Vidauban Golf Club in France; a five-night trip to Continue to Learn at BTME including four days of education; and a gift voucher for Toro Training.

The runners-up and endorsers of the winners will also receive various prizes.

BIGGA Learning and Development Executive Deb Burnett said: “Each year the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards gain a little more prestige, as previous finalists go on to achieve wonderful things in their careers. I’m delighted that more student greenkeepers than ever before participated in the nomination process and all should be proud of how they performed during the regional interview stage.

“The 12 finalists are very worthy of their spot and I can’t wait to watch them overcome the challenges we set for them at glorious Goodwood this autumn. My thanks go to Toro and Reesink Turfcare for their continued support of this wonderful initiative.”
