STIHL’s powerful battery-powered hedge trimmers

STIHL’s powerful battery-powered hedge trimmers: STIHL has expanded its hedge-trimmer line-up with the launch of new high-performance long-reach models, the HLA 150 B and the HLA 140 K-B and B. Designed for demanding landscaping applications, the new machines deliver powerful battery performance for trimming tall hedges safely and efficiently from ground level.

The HLA 150 B’s telescopic shaft allows the user to adjust its length between 207-332cm without the need for additional tools, providing greater flexibility when working at height. This enables efficient maintenance of tall and wide hedges, bushes, and shrubs. Its double-sided, double-edged blades also allows users to achieve a clean cut and rapid progress for maximum productivity, even when working with overgrown hedges or tough material. The tool’s cutter bar can be adjusted between 145 degrees, allowing professionals to trim the top, sides and bottom of hedges easily.

The HLA 140 models’ fixed length shafts are designed to provide stability and control for flexible working at low, mid, and high levels, with the added benefit of keeping the cutting attachment away from the user. The shorter, fixed shaft HLA 140 K-B offers a length of 214cm, while the longer fixed shaft model, the HLA 140 B has an overall length of 245cm.

Thanks to their battery operation, the machines’ powerful motors are exceptionally quiet during use, making them ideal for work in noise-sensitive environments. In addition, their anti-lock function prevents the jamming of blades to maintain consistent cutting performance, while their robust design, including metal mesh air-filters, ensure a long-service life for professional use.

Powered by EC motors, the tools’ blades are capable of rapid acceleration, helping users to get the best cutting performance. Both models are also easily regulated continuously using their throttle lever, with 3 blade speed settings to choose from with the simple press of a button. This means thicker branches can be cut effectively at lower blade speeds with high torque, while their high-speed modes produce a cleaner and neater cut when trimming finer leaved hedges and shrubs.

All models are equipped with a HMI Advance Plus module with Bluetooth and STIHL Connected to support digital fleet management. Each tool also displays its operating mode on a LED control panel. Designed to meet the requirements of professional users, their battery housing compartments are robust, and the placement of all components mean they offer excellent balance for prolonged user comfort, while the tools‘ IPX 4-rating makes them safe for use in wet conditions.

STIHL also offer a range of accessories to help users get the best out of their tools. With the new HLA range, the X-Treem HL/HT shoulder harness combines with the X-Flex Forestry belt to take the weight of the machine and allows the user to focus on guidance and accurate cutting. The battery can also be placed in an external AP battery holster on the belt to save weight.

The 2026 additions arrive as STIHL celebrates its 100th anniversary. Since 1926, STIHL has defined the global standard for battery and petrol-powered forestry, landscaping, and residential gardening equipment for professional and domestic users.

STIHL’s first single-sided battery-powered hedge trimmers

STIHL’s first single-sided battery-powered hedge trimmers: Single-sided hedge trimmers offer numerous benefits, including a longer and lighter cutting bar, as well as improved safety. Designed for professional landscapers, the HSA 150 R and HSA 150 T are the first single-sided hedge trimmers in the STIHL AP System, comparable in performance to the popular petrol HS 87.

Available in lengths of 75cm or 100cm, the HSA 150 comes equipped with a catcher plate as standard, increasing the speed at which the top of hedges can be cut.

Alongside the impressive performance, the HSA 150 also offers high levels of operator comfort. The new hedge trimmer weighs just 4.3 – 4.7 kg (without battery) and is comfortable to hold thanks to the ergonomic handle grips. The wide grip stance, combined with the central centre of gravity, allows the HSA 150 to be pivoted with ease, resulting in minimal strain to the operators’ wrists or arms.

The HSA 150 is quiet in operation, and thanks to its highly effective anti-vibration system, is suitable for long periods of use too. When cutting hedges with a petrol machine, the fumes can often collect within the hedge, resulting in a poor working environment for the user. Battery-powered machines such as the HSA 150 can eliminate this problem entirely.

Featuring 38mm tooth spacing, the HSA 150 R is best suited to annual pruning or hedge reduction work. Its lower maximum RPM of 3,200 also allows thicker branch material to enter the cutters efficiently. Alternatively, the HSA 150 T has a higher maximum RPM and smaller 30mm tooth spacing, making it better suited to ornamental or fine leaf hedges such as taxus, buxus or privet, where a fine finish is required.

The HSA 150 benefits from a new gearbox design, consisting of a two-step planetary gear. This results in exceptionally high cutting performance and fast cold start up, as well as improved protection of the internal components thanks to the integrated slip clutch.

To help prevent the blades from jamming, the HSA 150 features an innovative anti-blocking system that reverses the motors rotational direction to unblock the blades, minimising product downtime and enhancing the efficiency of the tool.

The HSA 150 utilises the same friction optimised, double edged blades that feature on the HS 87 professional petrol models, resulting in long lasting sharpness, a consistently clean cut and ample durability for long cutting seasons.

When used with the recommended AP 200 S battery, the HSA 150 R has a maximum working time of 150 minutes, while the HSA 150 T’s maximum working time is up to 140 minutes.

Alongside its impressive performance, the HSA 140 also offers high levels of operator comfort. The new hedge trimmer weighs just 4.3 – 4.6 kg (without battery) and is comfortable to hold, balanced in operation, and features a rotating rear handle that locks into three positions across a 180-degree range, reducing wrist strain when working for extended periods of time on the same side of a hedge.

Makita adds XGT hedge trimmers

Makita adds XGT hedge trimmers: Makita has added two powerful cordless hedge trimmers to its range of 40VMax XGT grounds maintenance tools. The 500 mm bladed UH020G and 600 mm UH021G both deliver highly efficient and effective cutting and have been designed for ease of use.

The UH020G and UH021G deliver an impressive 4,200 cutting strokes per minute and have a maximum blade opening of 20mm and will cut branches up to 10 mm in diameter. The new hedge trimmers feature single-sided blades with obliquely angled, triple-ground teeth for effortless cutting. As part of Makita’s powerful XGT 40VMax platform, the new hedge trimmers deliver both high performance and excellent run times. Using a 4.0Ah battery, the UH020G and UH021G will achieve run times of approximately 110 and 105 minutes respectively before needing to swap the battery. The fast recharge times achieved by Makita’s XGT batteries means the 4.0Ah battery will be ready to use again in just 45 minutes.

In addition, the UH020G and UH021G have been engineered for user comfort and ease of operation. Both have a lightweight design with the blade guide bar manufactured from aluminium to improve the balance and reduce user fatigue. The two machines also feature a redesigned switch lever on the handle that is easier to press in any orientation for simpler control. For safety, the UH020G and UH021G have an electric brake, anti-restart function and a double layered housing to minimise vibration.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK said: “Developed from similar products in our 18V LXT range, these lightweight but powerful XGT hedge trimmers help to streamline the task by providing users with the performance and cutting efficiency required. These are just the latest addition to our continually expanding range of 40VMax XGT forestry and grounds maintenance tools, which includes chainsaws, lawn mowers, blowers, brush cutters, linetrimmers and sweepers.”
