EcoBunker Highlights Thought Provoking New Research

EcoBunker Highlights Thought Provoking New Research: Industry leading innovator of synthetic bunker wall technology, EcoBunker, will highlight the findings of two major research projects on stand 246 at BTME in Harrogate, from 21st January.

EcoBunker will showcase the full results of the Great British Bunker Study, a project produced with the support of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA). The study identifies significant opportunities for golf clubs to reduce bunker maintenance costs while increasing golfer satisfaction, two topics at the top of every club agenda.

Alongside the bunker study, EcoBunker will present new research by the Welsh government that reveals surprising insights into sustainability and bunker construction. With thought provoking results on show the EcoBunker stand should provide hot topics of discussion for anyone with an interest in turf management or sustainable practices in golf.

“We’re really excited for BTME,” said Richard Allen, inventor of synthetic bunker technology. “It’s always a fantastic experience to share and learn amongst such an informed group of people at the show. And this year we have some fascinating data that will provoke conversation and progress the understanding of sustainability and best practices in golf. Anyone who wants to find out more should visit us at stand 246”

In addition to the two research projects, the EcoBunker stand will highlight work at Royal Ostend Golf Club that shows how EcoBunker met the challenge of some of the most stringent environmental standards in Europe. The team will also showcase some of its installations of EcoTec bunker liners and their positive impact during recent turbulent weather events.

RHS disease ranking highlights top 10 gardening problems

RHS disease ranking highlights top 10 gardening problems: The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has published its annual disease ranking, revealing the top ten problems for gardeners in 2023.

Damp conditions in spring and summer were the driving influence in the prevalence of certain diseases, with the following four new entrants to the top ten list: blossom wilt of fruit trees, pocket plum, tulip fire and slime flux. Fruit trees continued to be under threat from disease, with apples, pears, and Prunus among the top five hosts and collectively resulting in over 1,000 enquiries to the RHS advisory service, a 50% increase on the previous year.

The top diseases for 2023 are:

1. Honey fungus
2. Apple and pear scab
3. Rose black spot
4. Pear rust
5. = Blossom wilt of fruit trees
= Bacterial leaf spot and canker of Prunus
7. Phytophthora root rots
8. Pocket plum – Taphrina pruni
9. Tulip fire
10. Slime flux

Wet weather last spring provided perfect conditions for tulip fire – which produces brown spots and twisted, withered leaves – to take hold, seeing the disease make a return to the top 10 for the first time in several years. The damp spring conditions are also likely to blame for high cases of pocket plum, which causes elongated, hollow fruits with no stone on plums and damsons, as well as some ornamental Prunus, rendering the fruit inedible.

Slime flux, which affects a wide range of trees and shrubs, was another new entrant to the list. It is thought that the bacteria colonises trees via their roots, so the increase in cases may be a result of the wet winter in 2022/ 2023 and associated waterlogged soils. In addition, there was a rise in reports of rose black spot and pear rust, which can both likely be attributed to the warm and wet weather conditions during the summer.

Honey fungus topped the list for the 28th year running, having held the top spot since the list was first published in 1995. The fungus has a large host range of more than 140 garden plants, with the most common hosts in 2023 being privet, rose and viburnum, and results in dramatic symptoms, including death, cracked and bleeding bark and failure to flower.

To minimise plant disease this year gardeners are advised to apply mulch to improve drainage, while ground that has been laid sodden should be lightly pricked with a fork and spread with an organic mulch such as well-rotted manure, so plants grow with improved health and disease is less likely. Now is also a good time to prune out any diseased and damaged material before it can spread spores when the temperature is warmer.

Liz Beal, RHS Plant Pathologist, said: “Unusually wet weather in 2023 had a significant effect on plant health across the UK, with the prevalence of tulip fire and pocket plum demonstrating the impact of prolonged damp conditions. Following the extreme drought of the previous year, many gardeners are left wondering how to prepare for unpredictable weather patterns. Understanding the conditions of your garden is key in deciding which plants will thrive where; the right plant in the right place will always have a better chance of fighting off infection. Additionally, gardeners can help combat many of the most common diseases in our ranking by practising good hygiene, keeping tools clean and removing – and safely disposing of – diseased plant material from their gardens.”

The RHS Plant Health team uses the disease ranking to inform their research and advice. Current research at RHS Wisley’s Hilltop: Home of Gardening Science includes investigating the effective management of Phytophthora in gardens, examination of different methods for managing rose black spot and characterising the dispersal mechanisms and variation of honey fungus populations.

David said: “I am delighted to be joining the EGO team. With over a decade of experience in the industry, my extensive relationships within the dealer network highlight my commitment to cultivating lasting partnerships and I look forward to collaborating with both new and familiar businesses across EGO’s network to contribute to the brand’s growth and continued success.”

Elsewhere, Rudi Silkens has joined as Business Development Manager where he will manage EGO’s current Powered by EGO customer group and expanding the company’s network in the outdoor power industry. Powered by EGO is helping manufacturers to leverage the benefits of EGO’s proven battery technology and move away by fitting EGO batteries to their product ranges.

Rudi said: “I have been working in the garden machinery industry for more than 17 years and over that time I have worked across all parts of the distribution process. Due to my extensive experience, I have created a solid personal network and a strong understanding of the customer’s needs to make Powered by EGO a success.

“I am thrilled to be joining the EGO team and look forward to driving the industry towards a more sustainable future.”

This growth comes at a time when the company is looking to increase its collaborative relationship with the dealer network and drive new product development opportunities.

Together, these newly appointed roles will further strengthen EGO’s position in the outdoor power equipment industry, reinforcing its connections throughout the dealer network, and in turn will provide a positive experience throughout the whole distribution channel; ensuring that customers get the most out of what EGO’s tools and battery platform have to offer.

Peter Melrose, Managing Director at EGO, comments: “Maintaining positive relationships across the industry with our exclusive distributers and Powered by EGO partners is of top priority for us, as not only do our new hires provide us with exciting new opportunities for growth but they are also the vital connection between the brand and our valued customers.

“We have brought Rudi and David on board so that we may continue to create innovative new developments for our customers and in turn boost our growth and position in the industry network.”

Oakland Hills highlights role of Bernhard

Oakland Hills highlights role of Bernhard: Oakland Hills Country Club’s South Course has made a meteoric rise in Golf Magazine’s (Golf.com) World Top 100 Golf Courses rankings list, as it celebrates the completion of an extraordinary restoration project and improved course conditioning, through the support of Bernhard and Company.

The South Course at Oakland Hills has played host to 17 major golf championships in its illustrious history, including six US Opens, three PGA Championships and the 35th Ryder Cup in 2004. The restoration project has allowed the course, once again, to offer its originally intended playing style, with larger fairway landing areas and greens. That, coupled with pristine conditioning, has enabled the famous course – nicknamed ‘The Monster’ – to rise a phenomenal and unmatched 41 places in the new rankings list, moving into 31st position.

Following the renovation work carried out by renowned course architects, Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, Directory of Agronomy, Phil Cuffare, and his team of turf professionals were tasked with elevating the conditioning on the South Course to its highest ever level. With industry-leading grinding equipment and educational support provided by Bernhard and Company, the team was able to work with profound efficiency in delivering attention to detail mirroring that of the very best courses in the world.

Cuffare said: “We are very excited about the recognition that our famed South Course is receiving after the completion of its extensive restoration. To bring back to life something that had been lost for so long is a great feeling and we are continuing to express that through our conditioning efforts.

“The ultimate compliment to great golf course architecture is great conditioning. As such, the most important aspect of our agronomic programmes is turf health, and the cornerstone of achieving that is using our reel and bedknife grinding machinery to sharpen mowing equipment used to maintain our fine turf areas.

“The ability to achieve the perfect cut in an efficient and precise manner is what separates Bernhard and Company from others. We have very high expectations that need to be met and Bernhard is the partner that helps us to achieve those goals.”

The project involved the course being largely stripped back to the bare soil, to make way for a total revamp. When managing the growth and health of the new turf, it was more important than ever to ensure that all grass cutting was carried out with perfectly sharp blades to prevent any damage to the young plants.

What’s more, each hole was covered with sand in traditional USGA specification, meaning that mower blades were constantly subjected to sand damage. However, with the Bernhard and Company Express Dual 4250 Reel Grinder and Anglemaster 4500 Bedknife Grinder machines in the workshop, the maintenance teams were able to sharpen blades as regularly as necessary to ensure that they were operating at maximum efficiency as the course began to blossom.

The latest Golf Magazine Top 100 ranking reaffirms Bernhard and Company as the dominant grinder supplier to the world’s best courses. In addition to Oakland Hills, Bernhard and Company are also the official grinding machine provider for over half of the courses named in the list, including major championship venues all around the globe. Impressively, Bernhard and Company machinery is used by 13 of the world’s top 20 courses and seven of the top 10.
