Norwich Install Hunter Irrigation: Norwich City Football Club is reaping the benefits of the latest Hunter Industries irrigation technology after new systems were installed at both the Carrow Road Stadium and the Club’s training ground; the Lotus Training Centre.

The system, which was purchased through KAR UK – a distributor of Hunter Industries irrigation equipment, consists of a variety of G995, I-40 and I-80 rotary sprinklers, ICV valves, an ACC2 controller with Wi-Fi, a Roam remote and the ST1600 system for synthetic turf.

The Lotus Training Centre Grounds Supervisor, James Randell explained that the new technology was much needed: “We had to change our old irrigation system because we just didn’t have enough stations. Previously we used to get by but when we launched the Lotus Academy there was no doubt about it that we needed to upgrade.

“We spoke to KAR UK about the situation and Mike McDonnell (KAR UK Sales Manager) came to visit and advised on what would work best for us. The systems were installed in April last year and we’ve noticed some huge improvements.”

As James says, Norwich City FC has just seen the completion of a £5m project which saw the construction of new state-of-the-art Academy facilities at the Lotus Training Centre. With the addition of new natural and synthetic pitches along with the increasing demand for better quality playing surfaces, it was imperative that the club invested in a superior irrigation system.

With this in mind the club opted for the most technologically advanced commercial rotor on the market – the all-new Hunter I-80 gear-driven rotor.

Engineered specifically for sports turf, the I-80 is built with a robust, dirt-tolerant gear drive that offers the highest torque output of any rotor in the commercial sphere, and extends a radius range from 11.3 to 29.6 meters. The I-80 features a wide range of highly efficient, dual-trajectory, wind-fighting nozzles for highly efficient performance in a range of applications. It also provides total top serviceability (TTS) via its integrated, surface-mounted snap-ring for no-dig easy maintenance.

“We had 32 I-80’s installed and they are phenomenal,” said James. “Prior to these being installed we couldn’t get the grass to grow around the pop-ups. But with these new I-80 heads, with the nozzles and the spray pattern, they are a lot better and the growth this year has been amazing.”

With the I-80’s working wonders on the pitches at the training centre, James has also been blown away with the results from using the ACC2 controller which is ideal for delivering advanced water management to meet the demands of large-scale commercial projects and the Roam remote – which eliminates the need to go back and forth to the sprinkler controller.

“The controls are very easy to use and the remote allows you, no matter where you are onsite, to activate any of the sprinklers at any time. If for example, one of the coaches wanted to irrigate one of the pitches just before the players came onto the pitch then we can easily do that at just the click of a button.

“Overall, this new system has signalled some huge improvements. It has given us greater flexibility, is more accurate and because it is more accurate, we have seen a lot less water wastage. We have really enjoyed the Hunter Industries experience and KAR UK has provided an excellent service – they are always on hand to offer advice and are incredibly reliable.”

Rain Bird’s New Irrigation Controller

Rain Bird’s New Irrigation Controller: Rain Bird’s new Wi-Fi ready ESP-TM2 irrigation controller has been designed for both residential and commercial applications. It is simple to use, offers highly flexible watering schedules and water saving features. End users and contractors can select exactly the right controller to tailor irrigation to the varying needs of different areas, zones and plant types within a landscape.

The ESP-TM2 will be attractive to both users and contractors alike. Filling a gap between Rain Bird’s proven ESP-RZX 4/6/8 zone controller and the ESP-ME controller with up to 22 stations, the new ESP-TM2 models are available with four, six, eight and twelve stations. There are three individual programs for each controller and up to four independent start times for each program in order to offer users highly flexible irrigation scheduling.

The controller’s large back-lit LCD display gives good visibility in low light or bright sun. Quick programming can be undertaken in just three steps for ease of set-up. The turn dial is easy to navigate and simple to set for automatic and manual irrigation, date/time, run times and seasonal adjustment which allows easy reduction or increase of watering.

Advanced programming features include Permanent Days Off to postpone watering schedules when maintenance is planned or alternatively this facility can be used to set odd/even or cyclical irrigation schedules. Watering can be delayed up to 14 days and automatically resumed after the set delay has elapsed. Furthermore, a Contractor Default™ setting allows the user to save and restore a custom irrigation schedule easily.

There is an option to add a Rain Bird WR2 or RSD-BEX rain sensor to shut off irrigation in the event of rainfall, but a by-pass is also available for any station, giving the user or contractor the ability to customise which stations react to the sensor. There is also a one-touch manual watering facility.

For off-site management and programming, real-time alerts and the use of other advanced water management tools, ESP-TM2 controllers can be enabled for Wi-Fi remote control by iOS and Android mobile devices. This is achieved by simply plugging in Rain Bird’s separate LNK WiFi module into the controller’s accessory port. The readily available Rain Bird App can then be used for all remote programming and irrigation scheduling – particularly useful for contractors who manage installations and can save significantly on site visits.

Internet-based weather information can also be used, allowing daily adjustments to be made to the irrigation schedule in accordance with forecasts, potentially offering 30% water savings.

The ESP-TM2 controller can be installed indoors or outside and operates at 230 VAC @ 50/60 Hz.  Operating temperature is up to 65°C.

Commercial Landscape Irrigation Tips: Peter Longman, Rain Bird’s Northern Europe Landscape Area Manager, takes a look at how irrigation systems are becoming an integral element of landscape design. Product selection and regular maintenance are essential.

It seems that water restrictions and hose pipe bans may be more frequent over the coming years as predictions about global warming become reality. Whilst it is true that conservation of water is everyone’s responsibility, irrigation technology is likely to play an important role in ensuring this precious commodity is used to maximum effect in the commercial landscaping, sports and residential applications.

Landscape and Water Considerations

With efficient irrigation products and practices, it is possible to reduce water consumption by 25 per cent or more without having to give up the plants and trees that add to the look of any landscape. A fundamental requirement is to know the soil type involved – is an important factor in determining how fast and how often irrigation is needed. Different soils have differing rates of water intake as well as being able to hold moisture for varying amounts of time. These factors will influence the choice of plants as well as the type of sprinkler or other form of irrigation and will also influence the irrigation schedule. Finding out about a particular soil type does not require expensive lab tests and DIY soil testing is easy, using a jar test to measure soil texture and type.

Water pressure can vary greatly between locations. High or fluctuating pressure can have an  impact on the efficiency of an irrigation system. If there is no high pressure, it is important to install products equipped with pressure regulating devices, which can make significant water savings per minute per device. The quality of water can vary too and in some areas ‘reclaimed’ or ‘recycled’ water is available for irrigation purposes, requiring special products that stand up to the harsh chemicals that can be found in that type of water.

One way of conserving water and helping plants to stay healthy is to spread mulch in shrub beds, tree rings and flower beds. This helps drainage, encourages root development and improves the soil by making nutrients more available to the plants.

As different types of plants and shrubs within a landscape will need differing amounts of water, one approach is to divide a property into separate zones so that groundcover, shrubs and trees can be watered separately and less frequently. For some installations, drought-tolerant plants may be favourable whilst the use of grass with its higher irrigation needs, can be reserved for areas with high value or visual prominence.

Preventative Maintenance

In an existing installation, one of the most important tasks is to evaluate its performance. Check regularly for leaks as small ones can go unnoticed for long periods, potentially causing costly water wastage. Technology is available to detect and fix these leaks whilst a central irrigation controller that monitors an installed system with real-time alerts will indicate problems, allowing broken heads or damaged lines to be fixed immediately. Flow sensors will help limit the liability caused by water loss through damaged pipes or faulty valves.

Adjusting and Scheduling Irrigation Times

With the development of new technologies, adjusting irrigation schedules in accordance with real-time and predicted weather conditions is now a reality. This allows water to be saved whilst maintaining a healthy landscape. It is estimated that daily adjustments based on weather can save an average of 30-50%  in water consumption for irrigation each year.

Starting with a weather station based irrigation system, a smart controller automatically adjusts the watering schedule to take into account both current and predicted weather conditions.This allows the controller to water plants optimally year round without the need to constantly reprogram the controller. A rain sensor can also be used to stop or delay irrigation in the event of precipitation. Modern controllers’ seasonal adjust feature will turn watering times down as seasons and conditions change. All these features will help to prevent over watering, excess run-off and unhealthy landscapes.

It is normally better to irrigate in the early morning when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cool. Midday irrigating tends to be less efficient due to evaporation and wind drift. Irrigating in the evening is not a good idea either because leaves can remain wet overnight – an open invitation for fungus to grow.

Product Selection and Performance

Wind drift interference is just one phenomenon that should influence the selection of irrigation products. It is most likely to occur during the middle of the day and even small amounts of wind can cause water used for irrigation to drift, evaporate and be wasted.

Pressure regulating sprays and rotors combined with thick streamed nozzles, such as R-VAN, can help reduce the effects of wind drift. Keeping water in a tight place and hitting the target zone will also prevent wastage.

Irrigation systems are usually set to keep plants alive in the most inefficient areas of the system, which means that the plants in other areas may get too much water. Applying more water than the ground can absorb leads to excess water running off and technology such as Cycle+Soak on Rain Bird controllers will split watering times into a few shorter periods, so water has a chance to soak in. For slopes and hills, the use of lower-flow rotary nozzles will provide a solution.

As different types of emitters apply water at different rates, it is important to make sure water is being applied evenly and not overwatering some areas. The use of sprays and rotors with matched precipitation rates are available and are designed to be used together in the same zone.

Running a system with too much pressure creates misting and excess flow, which can result in water wastage but by adding a pressure regulation to sprays and rotors allows nozzles to perform as designed, delivering the right amount of water.

Think Dripline

The popularity of drip irrigation systems continues to increase as the industry recognises its benefits. Not only does drip irrigate plants directly for the most effective watering, but also ensures that virtually no water is lost through evaporation and water run off is minimised. Converting flower beds and shrubs to drip can on average, save 50% compared with over watering with traditional sprays. For grass, subsurface dripline is installed 3-4 inches below the surface to deliver water directly to the roots. Dripline subsurface for trees and large shrubs offers the benefit of water savings and can also result in larger, healthier plants.

Until recently, however, using drip irrigation on sloped landscapes had been problematical because of the pooling and consequent soil erosion or drainage issues that could be caused at the bottom of the slope. This is a result of water continuing to flow out at the lowest point after the drip system has been turned off.  A new dripline system that is kept effectively charged along the entire slope, whilst simultaneously stopping water escaping at the bottom, is now available.

Maintaining just the right levels for water pressure and water flow are also essential to attaining maximum efficiency from any dripline system and drip control zone kits for a range of flows are readily available. Sand, grit and debris can affect the performance on low-volume drip emitters, leading to clogs and wasted water. Filtration systems will clear these harmful elements so that clogging is never an issue.

In Summary

An understanding of the soil, the landscape, the water supply and the local weather are key to effective irrigation. Once these are taken into consideration, proper maintenance and specification of the most appropriate and practical  irrigation systems, controllers and programming software will make a major contribution to the preservation of a landscape.

Celebrating 25 Years In Irrigation: Celebrating 25 years in the business, Jeremy Green became an authorised Landscape Agent for Rain Bird UK in May 1994. In 2006 he established Evergreen Irrigation in Pitstone and the company has become one of the UK’s most well respected landscape irrigation specialists.

Jeremy says: “Irrigation has become important in discussions about landscaping – not just to ensure appropriate watering, but also because of the need for more efficient use of water. Many building projects require irrigation as part of the eco-friendly requirements of local authorities. Increasing numbers of Landscape Designers are including irrigation in their layouts and looking to us to address the watering requirements for various types of plants and trees.”

Celebrating 25 Years In Irrigation

Jeremy’s original involvement with irrigation was when he began his career in the Middle East, acquiring experience on high profile projects. He familiarised himself with Rain Bird working for the landscape and irrigation project division of the BMTC in Saudi Arabia. “ The Middle East has a demanding climate so effective irrigation is essential. If products are tough enough to operate efficiently there, then the UK should present no problem. I was keen to be associated with Rain Bird on my return to the UK. “

Jeremy sees the most significant recent product development to be dripline surface irrigation that provides water exactly where it is needed. Automatic control systems including Wi-Fi linked and IQ-Cloud systems, which Rain Bird has developed, bring new levels of practicality and bespoke control. There has been a greater emphasis on training: “ Rain Bird and most other large irrigation suppliers provide extensive training programmes. I would like to see the industry take a greater lead in training, implementing recognised qualifications and codes of practice.”
