Milwaukee Tool is just getting started

Milwaukee Tool is just getting started: Global manufacturer of heavy-duty power tools, accessories and hand tools for professional users worldwide, Milwaukee Tool, has expanded its range of outdoor power equipment (OPE) to help provide industry professionals with a one-stop shop of the tools they need to complete the job at hand.

First launched in 2017, Milwaukee Tool’s OPE range has grown to feature more than 60 tools and cordless solutions, and the manufacturer is continuing to develop equipment to meet the demands of its customers, with the latest releases including updates to its range of lawn mowers, blowers, pole saws, hedge trimmers and more.

Rhys Adams, national sales manager OPE commented: “Thanks to our extensive OPE range, professionals have access to a singular battery platform with the right tools to ensure they can get the job done with ease and efficiency. To further support our customers, we’ve invested heavily in the development of our leading battery powered equipment, ensuring the needs of the end user are put first, each and every time.”

Among the products launching this year is the M18 FUEL DUAL BATTERY SELF PROPELLED LAWN MOWER with a 46cm (M18 F2LM46) steel deck and blade design. Following the successful launch of its flagship 53cm (M18 F2LM53) lawn mower in 2022, Milwaukee Tool has expanded the range to provide users with a more compact, 46cm option suitable for a range of grass types. Furthermore, the 46cm lawn mower provides gardening, landscaping and agriculture professionals with more manoeuvrability, allowing them to reach tighter spaces for a best-in-class cut.

It is joined by not one but two M18 FUEL HEDGE TRIMMER options to provide a range of solutions for professionals in the gardening, horticultural and landscaping sectors. The first features a double sharpened 45cm (M18 FHET45) blade which allows users to cut through branches up to 19mm thick. Meanwhile, the 60cm (M18 FHET60) option can tackle branches up to 20cm thick – providing a powerful yet flexible solution to achieve a cleaner cut, every time.

To help professionals reach new heights, the M18 BUSHLESS TELESCOPIC SHEAR (M18 BLTS) allows users to expand the tool from 2.1 metres up to 3 metres 2.1m up to 3m, with the power to cut through branches up to 4.4cm thick in those hard-to-reach places. The shear’s retractable branch hook not only helps users keep a compressed profile for better access but also provides a sturdy solution for pulling down tangled branches with ease.

Further expanding the range’s telescoping capabilities, Milwaukee Tool has developed the M18 FUEL TELESCOPING POLE SAW 30 CM (M18 FTPS30) to achieve precise cuts in higher tree areas. Providing users with powerful cutting performance and balance, even when extended to up to 400cm, the pole saw can achieve powerful cutting performance due to a chain speed of 25.4m/s, high torque and a 30cm cutting length for fast and effective results.

Rhys added: “We’re excited to be expanding this range in 2024, to bring even more solutions to tackle the challenges our customers are facing at work every day. With these new releases, landscaping, horticultural and agricultural professionals can utilise their existing Milwaukee Tool battery platforms to guarantee that the same level of power and performance is achieved across their complete tool set.”

More products are set to join the range later this year including a DUAL BATTERY BACKPACK BLOWER and a third-generation release of its M18 FUEL BLOWER, as well as a variety of new attachments for Milwaukee Tool’s M18 FUEL OUTDOOR POWER HEAD WITH QUIK-LOK.

Aspen is the answer says GT Trees

Aspen is the answer says GT Trees: Cleaner, greener and lower maintenance costs. Those were the main reasons Greg Tucker of GT Trees made the switch to Aspen Fuel and, five years on, he’s still shouting about these benefits and many others he’s found using the Alkylate fuel in his independent gardening and landscaping business.

In an era when many professionals may feel the pressure to invest in electric tools, Greg cites how he and his customers value that Aspen improves conditions for people and the planet while reducing the amount of functional equipment resigned to the shed or scrapyard.

Greg has worked within the arb sector for 18 years, recently changing direction towards more artistic projects – hedge work, topiary, shrubs and small tree reduction. For this, he relies on the performance of his fleet of hand tools – mostly powered by Aspen 2-stroke Alkylate petrol. “My journey into using Aspen is pretty common… I’d heard of it, gave it a try and I’ve been using it ever since” he explains. “My maintenance costs have reduced, and from the operator perspective, the headaches, congestion and other health implications typically associated with being in close proximity to petrol-powered equipment has been all-but eliminated.”

“Like most, I have explored electric tools but found they just didn’t cut it – literally! Battery life was not practical and, ultimately, the kit we already have does exactly the job we need it to. Through using Aspen, we can do our bit to be kinder to ourselves and the environment, and not be throwing away serviceable equipment.”

Aspen 2 is a pre-mixed 2-stroke Alkylate petrol, free from ethanol, benzene and many of the other hazardous hydrocarbons typically found in unleaded from the pump. This means that Aspen burns cleaner, reducing harmful emissions and providing reliable engine performance.

“We use roughly 25 litres a month, which we order through our local distributor, and find that the increase in the price is offset by the reduction in expensive repair bills we’ve had.” Greg continues, “You know what you’re going to get – you’re not going to get halfway through a job and run out of juice! Customers also recognise the red Aspen cans and are completely sold as soon as I reel off all of the benefits it has. I can’t recommend it enough!”

ECO 135TT is the solution for Pro Axe

ECO 135TT is the solution for Pro Axe: After four years of hiring woodchippers, with ‘mixed’ experiences, the time was right for Dan Snaith of Pro Axe to invest in a machine to call his own – that being an ECO 135TT from GreenMech.

Opting for the turntable model, the ECO 135TT has brought new-found convenience to day-to-day operations, not just available when he needs it, but rotatable to be exactly where he needs it too!

Dan has used various makes and models of woodchipper during his two decades in the industry, half of those operating under DS Grounds Maintenance – recently rebranded and relaunched as Pro Axe. “We undertake all manner of domestic and commercial tree-works for customers across South West Wales, which had put a lot of pressure on an aging GreenMech we previously had at our disposal” explains Dan. “We’ve therefore been relying on hire centres for the last few years which was unreliable and inconvenient to say the least!”

“I got in touch with Martin Lucas at GreenMech who responded quickly and arranged a demonstration of the ECO 135TT for the following week with our local dealer Powercut. The whole process was seamless and as soon as I saw the machine, I was sold!”

Defined as entry-level but delivering an impressive 5” chipping capacity, GreenMech’s ECO 135 range is ideal for a wide range of arb and landscape applications. The road-tow ECO 135TT model features a 24hp Loncin engine and full 360o turntable for powerful performance and unbeatable manoeuvrability.

“For me, this was one of the main selling points – it’s lightweight, easy to transport and when we arrive on site we can simply turn the ECO 135TT to face in any given direction, improving efficiency and safety for the operator especially when working at the roadside. Being petrol powered has also resulted in a reduction in our fuel spend, giving us chipping power that I’d say is on par with a larger 6” machine in a unit that’s close to half the size.”

“I was also impressed with the fast delivery, we waited only a few weeks before Powercut installed the machine with us in early October.” Since its delivery, the ECO 135TT has proven a versatile addition to the team. “It’s been out every week, and has tackled everything we’ve put through it – including hedge brash which the GreenMech seems to mulch through no problem. Overall, I couldn’t be happier.”

Wiedenmann Terra Float Air is new arrival at Ardfin

Wiedenmann Terra Float Air is new arrival at Ardfin: Newly appointed Director of Golf at Ardfin, Stewart Duff, has chosen a Wiedenmann Terra Float Air for his first machinery purchase.

Stewart. who took up his post at the Isle of Jura estate in October, had been working as a consultant for the estate prior to taking on the Director of Golf role.

Exceptional in every aspect, Ardfin opened for play in 2017, and is set amidst 10 miles of unspoilt shoreline on the south of Jura, offering breath taking wildlife and golf in equal measure.

A niche project for the course’s greens and aprons prompted Wiedenmann UK’s Mike James to deliver the distinctive pneumatic overseeder via ferry.

“Ardfin has predominantly fescue greens,” explained Stewart Duff.  “As things mature, it’s not unusual for other grasses to creep in, resulting in a handful of areas appearing a little patchy. Our goal is to add another fine leaf bent grass into the surfaces without disturbance, which will help everything blend better.

“Gordon Howat from the R&A recommended the purchase of the Terra Float Air and I was in full agreement with his recommendation, so it was an easy choice. It was here within weeks, only some notable storms prevented Mike getting it to us sooner…”

With rates as low as 1 g / m², the Air offers class-leading features. The operator inserts the chosen seed into size-appropriate dosing sleeves. Next, the seed bed is determined by selecting from a range of hole-making tools, including stars and cone-shaped ones, from just 5 mm in diameter. The tools are inserted into a heavy-duty floating 3-part spike roller which effortlessly follows contours.  It loosens and aerates the soil down to 30 mm, creating uniform ‘seed pots. Electric-drive technology is used for all aspects of seed delivery; the seed-dosing sleeves and fan are both electric powered. Seeds are delivered pneumatically down a series of eight pipes onto deflector plates, which direct the seed into the ‘pots.’ An in-cab computer stores data from previous runs and allows amendment to the application rate at any point. After the seeds are in the ground, a double layer sweeping brush follows on and it, too, has floating properties. A further three-part roller gives an optimal brush and roller combination to incorporate top dressing materials to the ground, before smoothing the surface.

“For a site like this, very little surface disruption is critical,” continued Stewart. “We anticipate five applications a year to the greens and aprons. We’ll go in with bent four times and fescue once, but regardless of which one, we want no impact to the golfer.”

Already the maiden run has taken place. Using Aitkens bent grass seed at 5 g per m², the Ardfin team targeted a handful of greens.

“It was a dream to use,” said Stewart, “Very versatile and easy to calibrate. Further down the line, it is likely we will over-seed more fescue into the greens and rye into pathways using the 8mm tines.”

Mike James, Wiedenmann UK’s Sales Manager, said:

“Stewart chose two separate seed delivery sleeves for bent and for fescue, along with the smallest sized tools for bent (5 mm) and the longer (8 mm) cone tines for fescue and rye. Seed-specific sleeves and tools are one of the standout features of the Air.  Combining them appropriately gives extreme accuracy.”

Wiedenmann UK’s dealer in Scotland, Fairways GM, led by Regional Manager, Rob Hogarth will provide ongoing sales support.

Seeding is simple with the Dennis S500

Seeding is simple with the Dennis S500: The Dennis S500 Plus seeder is helping to get the lawns into shape at Cheltenham Ladies’ College according to Ross Spry, Head of Grounds and Gardens.

After initially starting his career in greenkeeping, Ross Spry has been working for various colleges in the UK for over a decade. At Cheltenham Ladies’ College he oversees a grounds team consisting of seven members of staff who tend to the sports facilities and gardens.

Somewhat of a perfectionist, Ross recognised that the College lawns needed some attention and was quick to act.

“The lawns were not in the best shape, and there was a lot of weeds and moss, and thatch build-up in them,” he said. “We bought a scarifier and an aerator to try and alleviate this problem, but I wanted a machine to put seed back into the ground effectively rather than just broadcasting it.

“We looked at various brands of seeders and we found the Dennis S500 Plus to be the best for us.”

Ideal for bowls, cricket, golf and other fine turf and ornamental lawn areas, the dual-purpose Dennis S500 Plus has a 510mm (20″) operating width complete with interchangeable spiker and slotter reels. The spiker reel punches through the ‘surface pan’ allowing air, water and fertiliser to penetrate the root zone, while the slotter reel creates ideal seed germination pockets thus reducing seed wastage. Using the optional seed box attachment will ensure grass seed is dropped onto the ground at the prescribed rate and brushed into the pockets.

“We normally seed in the spring and autumn and before using the S500 Plus we apply a selective weedkiller to try and get rid of the weeds and moss,” said Ross.

“It is so simple to use, and it does exactly what we want it to do. It’s not heavy and it is nice and compact. Some of the lawns at the school are very small, so to have a seeder the size of the S500 Plus is ideal. It is also a lot more accurate than doing it by hand – you get more contact with the soil and better germination.

“The S500 Plus’ best feature is just how user friendly it is and it makes the task of seeding enjoyable.”
