JCB Christmas toy appeal breaks record

JCB Christmas toy appeal breaks record: JCB’s annual Christmas Toy Appeal is set to deliver a sackful of festive cheer to children in Staffordshire and Wrexham thanks to a record number of gift donations.

The appeal got under way in November with the installation of 14 collections points at JCB plants in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Wrexham. Today it was revealed that a total of 1,242 gifts had been donated as George Burton, aged five, and brother Henry, aged three, handed over the final two toys for the appeal to JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford in the reception at JCB’s World HQ at Rocester where all the presents are assembled.

Now the gifts are being handed over to the NSPCC, the Stoke-on-Trent Hubb Foundation and Wrexham-based Yellow and Blue charity, for distribution to children at Christmas. As well as huge support from JCB employees, the GMB Union also donated £1,250 to buy toys, the JCB Academy raised £300 for the purchase of gifts and IT specialists Cap Gemini donated 40 toys.

Lord Bamford said today: “When it comes to supporting a good cause, JCB employees are second to none. Every single one of the gifts donated will make a difference to a child this Christmas and it is heart-warming to see that everyone has given so generously.”

Adam Yates, Chief Operating Officer of the Hubb Foundation, said: “I can’t thank everyone at JCB enough for what they have done. I can say without any doubt that The JCB Christmas Toy Appeal really does make Christmas so much brighter for many hundreds of children in Staffordshire. I saw that for myself last year, which is why we are so grateful for every single gift which is donated.”

Rachael Holdcroft, NSPCC Strategic Service Manager (Together for Childhood, Stoke), said: “It is so heart-warming to see more than 1,200 gifts which have been donated to the JCB Christmas Toy Appeal because I know just what an impact this will have on the children this Christmas. I know that this year has been difficult for so many, so it really is incredible to know that even though times are tough, people still care about children and want to do their bit to ensure that all children receive a gift at Christmastime.”

Employees at JCB’s plants in Rocester, Uttoxeter, Cheadle, Hixon, Foston and Wrexham all took part in the appeal, helping beat last year’s donation total of 1,000 gifts.

Smallest Loadall joins JCB line-up

Smallest Loadall joins JCB line-up: JCB is introducing the 514-40, its smallest Loadall telescopic handler to date, with a height of just 1.8m and a width of 1.56m. However, the compact machine benefits from the largest operator’s cab in the class, sharing its core DNA with the world’s number one telehandler range.

  • Low maintenance 24.7hp (18.4 kW) diesel engine requires no DPF or DEF to meet Stage V
  • 82% shared JCB componentry ensures quality, ease of maintenance and maximum uptime
  • Full width cab is up to 200mm wider than competitors, delivering more operator space
  • Best-in-class lift capacity at full height is 12% higher than competitors
  • 17% increase in power-to-weight ratio over the previous generation 516-40
  • Increased manoeuvrability for the tightest working sites

JCB’s new Loadall 514-40 telescopic handler brings together more than 45 years of telehandler development to create the smallest overall package, with big machine comfort and capabilities.

At just 1.8m tall and 1.56m wide, the 514-40 has been designed to access the most confined sites. Small enough to fit through a 2m high doorway, the machine delivers unparalleled manoeuvrability with all-wheel steering, making it an ideal telehandler for working in and around the smallest of buildings and farm yards, as well as at farm supply businesses, and in commercial horticulture.

The telehandler is powered by a low maintenance 24.7hp (18.4 kW) diesel engine that meets the EU Stage V emissions standard without the need for a complex Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or any diesel exhaust fluid, minimising operating costs for customers and simplifying operation.

This three-cylinder, 1.1-litre engine, which boasts 66.9Nm of torque, drives through a proven Bosch hydrostatic transmission to a two-speed Linde motor, delivering a maximum travel speed of 10mph (15km/h).

Permanent four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering give the 514-40 the all-terrain capabilities synonymous with JCB’s market-leading Loadall range.

The maximum lift capacity is 1,400kg, while maximum lift height is 4.0m, making this an ideal machine for numerous industry sectors; lift capacity at full reach is 525kg.

With an unladen weight of 2,695kg, the machine boasts a 17% higher power-to-weight ratio than the Loadall 516-40. However, the 514-40 newcomer can be transported on a lightweight 3.5-tonne trailer behind a 4×4 or a light commercial vehicle, making it easier, quicker and less expensive to move it between distant work locations.

The full width operator’s cab is 20% larger than the previous 516-40 and a full 200mm wider than competitor models to provide the operator with a comfortable working environment, while the extensive glazing delivers excellent visibility to all four corners.

The cab will be instantly familiar to operators of other Loadall models, with JCB’s intuitive ergonomic controls making the 514-40 one of the easiest machines to operate.

Standard features include a 50mm tow ball with 7-pin electrics, reversing alarm, road lights, the patented JCB load control system and JCB’s LiveLink Lite telematics system, while options include an LED work light package, and amber and green beacons with an orange seat belt, which can all be protected by JCB’s immobiliser Key Pad.

The 514-40 boasts a new lightweight tool carrier and is capable of working with floating forks or a 0.41cu m bucket, while double-acting auxiliary hydraulics make it possible to operate a range of JCB attachments, increasing the versatility of this compact machine. Customers can also choose between a range of industrial and turf-compatible tyres.

750,000th JCB engine comes off the line

750,000th JCB engine comes off the line: JCB is celebrating a major milestone for its award-winning engine.

The 750,000th engine has just come off the line at JCB Power Systems in Derbyshire where production first began in 2004.

Engine production was extended to India in 2011- helping to power JCB to the landmark figure.

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “750,000 engines is quite some milestone when you consider that we only started manufacturing 17 years ago. So much has been achieved over that time with our engines including two world land speed records. With the development of our new hydrogen motor, there is so much more to come and the future for our engine business looks very bright.”

More than half of the 750,000 engines have been made at JCB Power Systems which produces a range from 55-212kW. The engines are used to power JCB’s products as well as those of customers producing equipment as diverse as road sweepers, screeners and crushers and barges.

JCB India’s Delhi plant currently manufactures around 48 engine variants for the Indian market and for export.

Among the highlights of the past 17 years of engine production was a Queen’s Award for International Trade for JCB Power Systems in 2016 honouring a 325% growth in third party sales.

Toyota Mirai joins JCB fleet

Toyota Mirai joins JCB fleet: Digger giant JCB has taken delivery of the latest Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car – just as it develops its own hydrogen engine technology.

The vehicle is among the first batch of Toyota’s second-generation hydrogen-fuelled cars to arrive in the UK since its launch earlier this year.

JCB’s purchase of the Toyota Mirai comes as the company invests £100 million in the development of super-efficient hydrogen engines to power its equipment. The wraps have already come off two prototype hydrogen powered machines: a backhoe loader and a Loadall telescopic handler, which were displayed COP26 in Glasgow.

It is the second hydrogen fuelled Toyota Mirai bought by JCB following the purchase of a first-generation model in 2015. The new Mirai was handed over to JCB Chairman Lord Bamford by President and Managing Director of Toyota (GB), Agustin Martin.

Lord Bamford said: “We applaud Toyota for its consistency in exploring the potential of hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels in cars. Indeed, just in the past few months, Mr Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation, has been testing a Toyota car powered by a hydrogen combustion engine, the same technology that JCB is pioneering for its own machinery. Having a hydrogen fuel cell car in our fleet makes perfect sense as we pursue hydrogen as a fuel of the future.”

Agustin Martin said: “Since 1992, Toyota has produced more than five million cars at its Burnaston plant and our Midlands neighbours at JCB have an even longer history of providing employment, investment and innovation in the region.  JCB’s research and development into hydrogen engines marks a significant and forward-thinking shift in the construction and agriculture worlds.  It’s exciting to see another industry taking the steps towards decarbonising society through the application of hydrogen technology.”

JCB has manufactured engines since 2004, producing them at plants in Derbyshire and Delhi, India.  It is on course to celebrate production of its 750,000th engine this year.

Toyota’s all-new Mirai is its second-generation fuel cell electric vehicle. It offers enhanced driving performance, better fuel efficiency, a 30 per cent greater driving range and a price tag almost 25 per cent lower than its predecessor.

The increased efficiency of Mirai’s fuel cell system, coupled with a 1kg increase in hydrogen capacity, gives the car a range of approximately 400 miles – an increase of 100 miles over the first generation model.

Fuelled by hydrogen, Mirai can be refilled in a matter of a few minutes. It emits only pure water and, through the use of a new electrostatic filter, removes almost 100 per cent of particulate matter from the air, up to 2.5 microns in diameter, as it drives.
