Tubex Expands UK’s Largest Tree Shelter Collection

Tubex Expands UK’s Largest Tree Shelter Collection: Tubex is kicking off 2025 with a major expansion of its tree shelter Collection and Recycling Programme, making it easier than ever for landowners and tree planters to recycle used shelters responsibly.

With 1.1 million tree shelters recycled to date, the UK’s first dedicated scheme of its kind is growing once again, with the addition of more locations and partners committed to sustainable forestry practices.

Tubex has built on the scheme’s success in 2024 by working closely with more partners and distributors to expand the network for 2025, with new collection points, including West Chevington, RSK Whittington and Alba Trees Ltd, joining the list.

These new locations accompany Tubex’s existing partners such as Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust, Tilhill, Maydencroft, Green-tech and others, helping to grow the hub network to over 25 sites across the UK. This year’s expansion ensures even greater accessibility for landowners and tree planters looking to dispose of used shelters responsibly, either by dropping them off at a hub for free or by booking doorstep collection for a small fee.

The Tubex Tree Shelter Collection and Recycling Programme accepts used polypropylene or polyethylene tree shelters or mesh tubes from all manufacturers. All materials collected are recycled into new shelters, reinforcing Tubex’s ongoing commitment to a circular economy where materials are reused, and waste is minimised. As confirmed by independent research, collection and recycling represent the lowest impact option when tree shelters are used*, making this the most responsible avenue for landowners.

Pete Stevens, Business Development Manager at Tubex, said: “The growth of our Collection and Recycling Programme shows what can be achieved through strong collaboration and shared sustainability values. Our goal has always been to make it easier for landowners to ensure shelters aren’t left in the environment, and the expanded hub network means more people than ever can do the right thing.”

“We are proud of the community of stakeholders who have helped make this programme what it is today,” added Pete. “By working together, we are driving real progress in how the industry approaches tree shelter use and disposal, and we look forward to continuing that journey this year.”

Ideal for gardening enthusiasts of all strengths, while this may be a beast of a mower, it has been designed with simplicity in mind. Featuring a push button start, users can simply push the handle and the mower will self-propel forward, while the addition of a variable cutting speed helps make for an even more effortless mowing experience.

For further ease, grass-cutting height can be adjusted easily via the 8-position spring loaded adjustment (between 25 to 100mm), and the SELECT CUT interchangeable multi-blade cutting system allows users to alternate incrementally between mulching or grass collection with a single lever.

Users can also choose a side discharge accessory to quickly disperse of grass cuttings. Additionally, the kit also comes complete with a 10.0Ah battery which can cut up to 2000sqm on a single charge.

For added convenience, the aluminium telescopic handle boasts a quick-release lever enabling easy access to the collection bag, while the powerful LED lights also make the mower suitable for applications in low-light environments.

Joerg Bauerle, Product Manager for EGO, said: “We are delighted to introduce the 55cm mower to our portfolio. Not only is it more durable, but it is also stronger and lighter in weight compared to other mowers on the market due to the introduction of a super composite deck.

“It is ideal for residential users as the mower will self-propel forwards with minimal effort required, and it is easily controlled via the cockpit, which provides live status updates of the mower. We have found that there is also traction with professional users due to it being much lighter in weight compared to aluminium or steel decks.”

The LM2236E-SP 55cm mower kit retails at £1199, including a 10.0Ah battery and rapid charger.

Terrain Aeration for England’s largest Sequoias

Terrain Aeration for England’s largest Sequoias: Darlington’s South Park is home to two of what are believed to be the largest giant Redwood trees or multi-stemmed Sequoiadendron giganteum in England. Planted in March 1863 to commemorate the marriage of the future King Edward VII to Princess Alexandra of Denmark, the trees are placed in the top ten in Britain.

The only other multi-stemmed Wellingtonia is at Stratfield House, the former home of the Duke of Wellington. It was planted by the 2nd Duchess of Wellington in 1857 in memory of the Duke and the Battle of Waterloo, hence the alternative naming of the tree as Wellingtonia. This caused outrage among US botanists when the Sequoia was rediscovered in 1852 in Sierra Nevada and a sample taken to England to become named after the recently dead duke. The tree council believes the trees in South Park are most likely from the same seed as the Stratfield trees.

Recent times have seen one of the Darlington trees suffering from the effects of compaction. The top roots are, in fact, visible and travel a long way from the tree on one side, with a steep hill down to a river on the other. The tree over-compensates to get all its energy.

Darlington Council took action by calling on the services of Terrain Aeration’s Tree Division to provide specialist deep aeration of the area using their Terralift machines. The key to successful treatment is usually to work along the dripline, one metre inside and one metre outside, where the rainwater drips from the canopy. Working either side of the dripline reaches beyond the growing roots, increases the percentage of oxygen intake and allows maximum drainage. Rainwater can penetrate deeper, resulting in a stronger root growth and a healthier canopy spread with an aerated soil structure and relief of compaction panning. Once the trees receive significant rainfall, they pick up as they receive more water and nutrients.

With the South Park trees, all the lawn was aerated as well with mycorrhizal funghi. These attach themselves to the tips of the roots and help them break through hard soil, leaving the tree more energy to grow leaves and in size. The soil was very hard and dry around the base, so some fractures were done near to the tree. Water storing polymer was injected into the area to help retain available water from rainfall for the tree roots. Unlike normal aeration, the Terralift is designed to penetrate as deep as one metre using a probe, which releases compressed air at a maximum of 20Bar (280psi). The effect this creates is to fracture the soil, resulting in fissures that interlink as the Terralift repeats the process on a grid system of two-metre spacings. The network of fissures allows maximum penetration of air and water.
