GMA launches Workforce Insight Report

GMA launches Workforce Insight Report: The Grounds Management Association (GMA) has released its new Workforce Insight Report, offering the most complete picture yet of the UK grounds management workforce.

The report shows the scale, value and pressures within the sector, and explains why fair and sustainable workforce practices are now essential for the future of the profession.

Grounds management is a skilled and important part of the UK’s sporting and recreational system. More than 30,000 people work in the sector, supported by over 13 million volunteer hours each year. These teams help maintain the pitches, parks and playing surfaces that communities and sports rely on.

The report shows that the workforce is committed and proud of its role, but also under strain. Nearly half of grounds staff are aged between 45 and 64, and around 15% plan to retire within three years. Recruitment and retention continue to be major challenges, and employers report increasing difficulty attracting experienced applicants. Many sites depend on overtime and goodwill to maintain quality.

Job satisfaction is generally high, but the research shows clear concerns around pay, benefits and work‑life balance. Rising workloads and pay compression linked to the National Living Wage are creating pressure points that could affect motivation and progression, especially for long‑serving staff. These issues reflect wider pressures across the sector, where budgets are tight and demand is increasing.

To support employers, the GMA has also launched a new public resource, “Working in Grounds Management: Securing the Future of the Profession,” which is a shorter guide including key findings, updated salary information and practical points for employers.

It is available through a simple download on the GMA website. The full Workforce Insight Report is available exclusively to GMA members through MyGMA.

Insights from the report will help shape the GMA’s Fair Work Strategy. The strategy aims to support employers to strengthen pay structures, improve wellbeing, develop skills and create clearer progression routes, in ways that are practical and financially realistic.

Geoff Webb, CEO of the GMA said: “Our pitches and playing surfaces depend on a skilled workforce. This report helps us understand the pressures staff and employers face, and why workforce issues are now business issues. The Fair Work Strategy will help the sector build a stable, motivated and resilient profession for the years ahead.”

STRI launches Racecourse Water Management guide

STRI launches Racecourse Water Management guide: STRI Group has launched a new Racecourse Water Management: Best Practice Guide, providing practical, evidence-led guidance to support consistent, high-quality racing surfaces in an increasingly unpredictable climate.

The guidance was officially launched at the RCA Vets Medical Turf Management Conference on 28th January and has been developed by STRI in partnership with the Racecourse Association (RCA) and the Horse Welfare Board (HWB), with support from the RCA Ground and Going Group and funding from The Racing Foundation.

As historic climate trends become less reliable, racecourses face growing challenges from drought, intense rainfall and drainage pressures. The new guide supports a proactive, data-driven approach to water management, helping racecourses make informed decisions that protect surface performance and welfare.

Primarily aimed at Clerks of Course and grounds teams, the guide is also relevant for racecourse executives and decision-makers responsible for planning, investment and risk management. Designed to be accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences, it also serves as a valuable training resource for staff new to racecourse operations.

The guidance builds on STRI’s Performance Quality Standard (PQS) framework for turf horse racing, translating improved data measurement and understanding of the relationship between soil moisture and Going into clear, practical advice. It covers soil–water interaction, irrigation demand, calculating water requirements and the importance of measuring soil moisture.

Dr Christian Spring, Principal Scientist at STRI Group commented, “In sport, we can no longer rely on historic climate trends alone to guide how natural turf courses are managed. The impacts of prolonged drought, intense rainfall and poor drainage can be significant, affecting both surface performance and welfare. To meet these challenges, racecourses must be adaptive, flexible and prepared, with the right infrastructure in place and teams who can make informed, confident decisions about their tracks. The document also provides a valuable training resource for staff who are new to racing or racecourse management and at its core, the guide prioritises the welfare of horses and jockeys.”

The guide can be downloaded on STRI’s website here: https://strigroup.com/racecourse-water-management-best-practice-guide-launched-download-here/

Bionema Launches NemaGen® to Support Turf Industry

Bionema Launches NemaGen® to Support Turf Industry: The UK natural turf sector, valued at approximately USD 501 million in 2024 and projected to continue growing, is facing sustained pressure from crane fly and chafer larvae, following the withdrawal of chlorpyrifos and imidacloprid from amenity use.

The amenity turf sector includes golf courses, sports pitches, racecourses, and airfields, where soil insect damage directly affects surface quality, safety, and renovation costs.

Industry observations across multiple UK golf courses and sports facilities indicate leatherjacket populations have increased from historic levels of approximately 30 larvae per m² to peaks of 100–600 larvae per m² at affected sites. Turf managers report increased renovation, labour and surface repair requirements as a result.

In response, Bionema has launched NemaGen® Hd, a cold-tolerant entomopathogenic nematode platform active from soil temperatures of 8°C. UK field trials have demonstrated 60–70% control of leatherjackets and chafer grubs under defined soil temperature and moisture conditions.

NemaGen® Hd offers:

  • Extended seasonal application from early spring through autumn.
    • Structured temperature-timed deployment guidance.
    • Compatibility with wetting agents to optimise dispersal.
    • Direct technical support from Dr Minshad Ansari, specialist in entomopathogenic nematodes.

In addition, the improved formulation enhances product stability, delivering a shelf life of up to 10 weeks under recommended storage conditions, with encapsulated formats offering extended stability for specialist applications.

“With regulatory changes reducing curative insecticide options, the sector requires reliable biological alternatives that are correctly timed and technically supported,” said Dr Ansari. “NemaGen® Hd is designed as a deployable biological solution within integrated pest management programmes, restoring confidence in biological turf insect control.”

Commercial supply for the 2026 season is now open.

NemaGen® Hd is suitable for golf courses, sports pitches, racecourses, airfields and managed lawns.

Bionema is currently selecting one to two UK and EU distribution partners for the 2026 season.

Replay Maintenance launches Natural Turf division

Replay Maintenance launches Natural Turf division: Replay Maintenance has announced the launch of a new Natural Turf division, marking a significant expansion of the company’s service offering and reinforcing its long-term commitment to supporting grassroots and community sport.

The move is supported by the appointment of Ben Sadler as Head of Natural Turf, bringing more than 25 years of hands-on and strategic experience in sports turf management to the business.

Best known as a nationwide provider of synthetic surface maintenance and refurbishment, Replay Maintenance has spent the last two decades working closely with clubs, local authorities and governing bodies.

The introduction of a Natural Turf division enables the company to offer a more comprehensive, joined-up service for sites operating both synthetic and natural grass pitches.

Ben’s career spans golf, sports turf contracting and grassroots football, combining practical expertise with a deep understanding of funding, education and long-term pitch improvement. He began his career working on a local golf course in the Midlands before moving into a fast-growing lawn care business, where he played a key role in scaling the operation from a start-up into a medium-sized company.

“I fell in love with the industry early on, but I was keen to understand the business side as well as the practical side,” said Ben. “Being involved in everything from marketing and sales through to training and operations gave me a really solid foundation.”

More recently, Ben held a technical role focused on grassroots football pitches across Leicestershire, working closely with County FA partners and the Football Foundation. During this time, he supported between 200 and 300 pitches across 40–50 sites, guiding clubs through funding applications, developing schedules of work and delivering on-the-ground improvements.

“There was a lot of education involved, helping clubs understand why certain practices mattered and how they could create a better environment for people to play football,” he explained.

Ben said the opportunity to join Replay Maintenance and build a new division from the ground up was one he couldn’t ignore. “It’s a really exciting opportunity to come in with almost a blank page and work alongside people with so much experience. The ambition is to grow initially across the East Midlands and then expand further as the offer develops.”

As Head of Natural Turf, Ben will lead a programme focused on core maintenance services such as aeration, seeding, fertilising, weed control and top dressing. While the initial emphasis will be on grassroots football, the division will also support rugby, cricket outfields and other natural turf facilities.

“For clubs that don’t have the time, equipment or expertise, we can take that burden away,” said Ben. “For Replay, it means becoming a genuine one-stop shop – looking after both synthetic surfaces and natural turf on the same site.”

Matt Bartle, Group Head of Commercial Strategy at Replay Maintenance, said the launch of the division was a natural progression for the business.

“We’re already a nationwide service provider on the synthetic side, and when the opportunity arose to bring someone of Ben’s calibre into the organisation, it made complete sense to look at natural turf,” said Matt. “It allows us to better support our existing partners and improve footfall and performance across all their pitches.”

Matt added that Ben’s background was a key factor in the decision. “You have to invest in the foundations if you want to get the offer right. Ben came highly recommended, and it quickly became clear that he was the right person to lead this.”

Initially, the Natural Turf division will focus on Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. However, Matt confirmed that longer-term ambitions are firmly nationwide.

“We’ll spend the next 12 months refining the offer, learning and working closely with partners,” he said. “We’ve built a strong reputation in the industry, and by bringing the right people in, we’re confident this division will grow to meet demand in the years ahead.”
