Makita: powering the Eden Project

With its wide range of cordless machinery offering a reliable and powerful alternative to petrol powered equipment and a one battery fits all solution for cordless construction and grounds maintenance tools, Makita was the ideal choice to help Eden meet its sustainable vision and ecological ethos. The partnership will see the Eden Project team replace its existing petrol and corded machines with Makita’s battery-powered products.

Si Bellamy, Interim Chief Operating Officer at the Eden Project, said: “Eden is dedicated to using sustainable methods and we wanted to update our grounds equipment with more environmentally friendly kit without compromising on power or performance.

“With Makita’s extensive range of cordless power tools and garden machinery, we can make the transition over to cordless incredibly easily. Makita’s cordless range will enable us to complete day-to-day maintenance tasks and larger projects in a safer, quieter, more efficient way.

“The use of battery power as fuel completely eliminates the need for our team to transport and handle petrol and as no fumes are omitted during operation there are zero gas emissions – which is fantastic for reducing our carbon footprint further. What’s more, there is no need to consider the safe placement of cables as with corded machines. As a result, we will be able to safely carry out work when visitors are on site.”

Makita’s innovative cordless technology also means that the machines work for long periods of time without needing to be charged. As a result, Eden team can work on large areas and tasks without needing to stop to replace or recharge the batteries, improving productivity further.

Mark Earles, Business Development Manager for garden machinery at Makita said: “The Eden Project is an educational charity and visitor attraction focused on showcasing the power of nature and inspiring visitors to think more sustainably. We are thrilled to be working with the team, as part of its efforts to improve environmental efficiency, by delivering cordless solutions to help the team work more efficiently on site.

“With over 270 cordless products in our LXT portfolio, we can ensure that the Eden Project have access to the machines they need, no matter the task. Our battery platforms also mean that the team can switch between tools and tasks effortlessly, reducing downtime and improving productivity.”

Makita’s product range is designed to work in tough outdoor environments, making the partnership an ideal backdrop for the Eden Project team to put the kit through its paces in unique settings, such as the heat of the Eden Project’s Rainforest Biome. Makita will be using this as a long-term opportunity to gain user feedback on the performance of the machines, to assist with research and development into new models and tool technologies.

Si Bellamy added: “We are really excited to kick off our partnership with Makita and see what we can achieve together over the next five years and beyond. It is really important for us to develop a strong partnership with Makita and work collaboratively with them to further our capabilities here at the Eden Project.”

Makita launches self righting light

Makita launches self righting light: Makita has launched a new self-balancing area site light – the latest addition to its range of LED site lighting solutions. The DML810 18V Self Righting Site Light LXT delivers up to 5,500 lumens (lm) and 360 degree illumination with the option for corded or cordless operation.

The self-balancing design of the Makita DML810 means that it remains upright even when knocked or bumped, making it ideal for busy sites. The 202 super luminous daylight white LEDs provide high quality illumination without the heat of halogens or incandescent lights. It features three operation modes, High (5,500 lm), Medium (3,000 lm) or Low (1,500 lm), and three illumination direction modes – full 360 degrees or 180 degrees to the left or right.

For versatility, the DML810 offers corded or cordless operation and utilises two Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries, using one battery at a time. This means the light delivers up to 15 hours of continuous illumination on Low with two 5.0Ah 18V batteries, and over 3 hours on High. When using AC power, the batteries function as a power back up to keep the area lit if the power fails.

This durable light unit is 787mm high and 420mm wide and is both dust and water resistant, with an IP54 rating when using battery power. It is also possible to connect up to 8 units together using the AC inlets and outlets to deliver light across the whole job site area. Convenient carrying handles and a balanced side position allow for easy movement, transportation and storage.

With over 270 products compatible with Makita’s Lithium-ion LXT battery technology it is one of the largest battery / cordless platforms in the world. This allows users to use just one battery type and seamlessly swap between different pieces of equipment as required.

Lyndsey Bailey, Assistant Product Manager at Makita UK said: “The DML810 18V Self Righting Site Light has been engineered to provide a robust, durable and versatile lighting solution that is suitable for the toughest site conditions. The high quality illumination makes work easier and safer, especially as the LEDs eliminate the hazards associated with the heat of halogen and incandescent lights.”

Makita expands XGT ’40V’ range

Makita expands XGT ’40V’ range: Makita has expanded its high-performance 40Vmax XGT range with the addition of three new tools.

The new Rotary Demolition Hammer, 216mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw and 230mm Angle Grinder all feature Makita’s highly efficient brushless motor technology and have been engineered to bring the benefits of cordless technology to high-demand applications.

The powerful HR005GZ01 40VMax Brushless Rotary Demolition Hammer offers rotary hammer and hammer only operating modes and is compatible with SDS-MAX chisels, drill bits up to 40mm and core bits up to 105mm. It features a variable speed trigger and delivers speeds of up to 500 revolutions per minute (rpm) and up to 2,900 blows per minute (bpm) of hammer action.

The HR005GZ01 also includes features to make it easier and safer to use. This includes Active Feedback sensing Technology (AFT), which protects the user by shutting down the tool if the rotation speed reduces suddenly. It also features the soft no load function and Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT) to reduce the levels of tool vibration and therefore extended safe trigger times. The result of this is that the new Rotary Demolition Hammer has a vibration level of just 5.0m/s² when hammer drilling.

The versatile LS002GZ01 40VMax Brushless 216mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw has an easy to set mitre range of 60° to both the left and right as well as a 48° bevel range in each direction, making it simple to achieve the cut required.  It also includes Makita’s Deep and Exact Cutting Technology (DXT) that allows the accurate cutting of large workpieces. The LS002GZ01 offers improved dust collection when fitted to an extractor, soft start and constant speed control functions as well as an electric brake to stop the blade in seconds every time for greater safety.

The final new addition is the GA038GZ07 40VMax Brushless 230mm Angle Grinder. The 230mm wheel diameter makes this the largest angle grinder in the XGT range and is ideal for the highest demand applications. The GA038GZ07 is also easy and comfortable to use with an ergonomic soft grip on the tool body and a side handle that can be mounted on the left or right based on the user preference. The wheel cover position can be effortlessly adjusted without the need for tools, making work easier and faster.

To maximise user safety and comfort, the new grinder has been engineered for low levels of vibration so it can be used safely for longer. It also benefits from the AFT system, includes an electric brake to stop the wheel quickly when the motor is switched off and an anti-restart function that prevents accidental start-up.

All three of the new additions to the XGT range also include Makita’s brushless motors and Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS) functionality when fitted with an optional AWS chip. The efficient brushless motor minimises friction and wasted energy within the machine for better performance and extended run-times. The innovative AWS function allows the tool to connect to compatible dust extractors via Bluetooth. The wireless connection means the dust extractor can run automatically while the tool is in use, meaning simple dust management for a cleaner and healthier environment.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK said: “Our XGT range of 40VMax tools offers all the benefits of cordless power, such as greater flexibility and improved safety, for the highest demand tasks in the toughest environments. The launch of these tools is the latest in a series of new XGT products introduced in recent months as we continue to invest in product development to give customers greater choice.”

The HR005GZ01 Rotary Demolition Hammer, LS002GZ01 216mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw and GA038GZ07 230mm Angle Grinder are all currently available to purchase as body-only, with options that include batteries and chargers to be launched soon.

More for the outdoors with Makita

More for the outdoors with Makita: Leading power tool manufacturer, Makita has announced the release of a new Twin 18V (36V) LXT Brushless Linetrimmer and 36V LXT Brushless Blower, as part of its expanding outdoor equipment range.

The 18Vx2 (36V) DUR368L LXT Brushless Linetrimmer is powered by the company’s innovative lithium-ion LXT battery technology; a system that allows operators to interchange battery power between over 270 LXT cordless Makita products. The new 36V UB001CZ Brushless Blower is powered by Makita’s back-pack battery system giving users the option to use the machine with either the PDC01 backpack battery that utilises interchangeable 18V LXT batteries, or the new PDC1200 solid state 33Ah backpack battery to offer even longer run-times for contractors.

Brushless Linetrimmer

The powerful 36V DUR368L brushless motor can reach fast cutting speeds of up to 6,500rpm and offers a cutting diameter of 350mm. Thanks to Makita’s Automatic Torque Drive Technology (ADT), speed and torque levels are automatically adjusted according to the density of weeds and the machine also features Makita’s highly responsive Active Feedback Sensing Technology (AFT), that shuts down the tool to protect the user if the rotation speed suddenly slows down.

With greater usability in mind, the machine is also fitted with an ergonomic soft grip and comes with a small protector to allow for a better view of the cutting area, as well as a reverse switch for easy removal of any tangled grass.

Brushless Blower

Powered by Makita’s PDC01 or PDC1200 backpack battery systems (sold separately), the brushless UB001CZ LXT Blower performs at 36V high power for extended run times and outstanding performance similar to a 50cc class engine machine, offering speeds of up to 24,000rpm in boost mode.

For the most efficient clearing operation, the blower has been engineered with an optimised grip to frame angle, providing the best nozzle to ground position. The lightweight and compact design is perfect for single handed operation but can also be attached to a shoulder belt for added comfort. Furthermore, as the machine is designed for use with backpack battery power, operators need only carry the weight of the bare machine, enabling work for longer periods with reduced fatigue.

As well as a variable speed control by trigger and a cruise control lever, the powerful, portable tool has a three-stage telescopic long nozzle attached as standard.

Speaking on the new devices, Mark Earles, Business Development Manager for Outdoor Power Equipment at Makita UK, commented: “We are pleased to launch these new outdoor products which form part of an exciting roadmap for our cordless garden machinery range this year. Our complete line up of cordless outdoor solutions continues to transform the way professionals work with new levels of productivity and efficiency. Both new solutions feature Makita’s brushless motor technology for longer machine life and with the support of the world’s largest cordless system, professionals can rely on a wide range of Makita tools that will get the job done without the limitations of petrol or cords.”
