Trefor Owens is an experienced chartered forester and senior leader in sustainable land management.  He has extensive experience working with and sitting on land-based industry committees and advisory boards for organisations such as Forestry and Land Scotland, DEFRA and Welsh Government. Helen Taylor is a committee advisor and Chartered Surveyor with governance experience across the UK’s public and private sectors. Her experience in compliance and regulation, governance and risk, and stakeholder engagement will all be critical skills as the Lantra Board of Trustees prepares to help the senior management team achieve its short and longer-term goals.

Lantra CEO Marcus Potter, said…

“We are confident that the three new appointments bring a diversity of experience and a genuine enthusiasm for the sector, that will make an invaluable contribution to the Board’s future activities”.

New ultrasonic flow sensor series

New ultrasonic flow sensor series: Rain Bird’s Flow Sensor technology is designed to both monitor and track water usage in an irrigation system, as well as identify and warn of any emerging problems.

By using a sensor to monitor high or low flow rates, issues such as leaks, line breaks or blockages can be identified. Detection of underflow means that a landscape may not be getting enough water whilst on the other hand, detection of overflow may result in a flooded landscape and wastage.

New ultrasonic flow sensor series

New ultrasonic flow sensor series

Rain Bird’s new Ultrasonic Flow Sensor Series uses ultrasonic waves to sense flow rates. This not only enables the sensors to read a wider flow range, but also ensures significantly more accurate readings when detecting flow rates. Flow data is sent in pulses to a Rain Bird central control or stand-alone controller.

The series is compatible with the IQ4 platforms, ESP- LXD, LXME2 PRO, LXMEF, ESP-ME3 and LX-IVM controllers. When used in combination with LX Series controllers, additional Flo-Watch and Flo-Manager management features can also be used. Pairing with Rain Bird’s Mobile App for iPhone or Android, gives the contractor or end user convenient control of flow settings from any location.

Rather than relying upon the traditional “paddle wheel “ impeller design of irrigation flow sensors, the Ultrasonic Flow Sensors have no moving parts. Water flow is sensed by ultrasonic waves as it passes through a pipe. It can detect the direction of flow and calculates water speed and also whether there is actually water in a pipe. The Ultrasonic Flow Sensor can be placed immediately after a bend or valve, or even in the same valve box to give much more precise readings.

Simple to set up, Ultrasonic Flow Sensors are available in 100, 150 and 200 versions for different flow rates and 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 inch BSP threads. LED lights indicating power, full pipe status, relative forward flow and reverse flow rates are included. The sensor can remain installed over the winter period.

The product won the Gold Award in the 2022 New Product Contest, Landscape Irrigation Category, United States’ Irrigation Association. For more information, contact Peter Longman, Rain Bird Europe, plongman@rainbird.eu  www.rainbird.eu

New 40VMAX linetrimmers and brushcutter

New 40VMAX linetrimmers and brushcutter: Leading power tool manufacturer Makita has added two new Brushless Linetrimmers (UR014G and UR017G) and the UR013G Brushless Brush Cutter to its range of high performance 40VMax XGT products.

Each delivers power and performance comparable to equivalent petrol-powered machines without the noise, environmental or safety considerations in storing and transporting fuel.

The UR013G 40VMax XGT Brushless Brush Cutter is ideal for heavy-duty tasks. It has a 1500-watt maximum output, delivering power equivalent to that of a 35cc petrol machine, and features a high torque mode. The UR013G has a variable speed control with a maximum speed of 6700 rpm, a lock-off function and a temporary reverse rotation ‘grass tangle removal’ function. To ensure ease of use, the machine is operated using the intuitive control unit on the right-hand side of the adjustable offset U-shaped handle.

The UR017G 40VMax XGT Brushless Linetrimmer offers a simple, lightweight and easy to use machine with a 600w power equivalent to a 23cc petrol engine. It has three speeds with a maximum of 6500 rpm plus an ADT (Automatic Torque Drive Technology) mode, which adjusts the speed and torque automatically for optimal performance. Like the UR013G, the UR017G also includes the useful grass tangle removal function.

The UR014G 40VMax XGT Brushless Linetrimmer offers the same compact design and loop handle but delivers a high power output of 1500w and a maximum speed of 5700 rpm on a variable speed control. It has a 450mm cutting diameter and a high torque mode making it ideal for the most demanding tasks. The UR014G also features a reverse rotation mode to suit different user requirements as it allows control over the direction in which the grass clippings are scattered. The grass is scattered to the right and left with clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation respectively. This is useful, for example, when cutting verges or lawns next to a road or driveway.

All three machines include Makita’s high-efficiency brushless motors that minimise wasted energy to extend run-times per battery charge and improve productivity. The UR013G, UR014G and UR017G also all include safety features such as an anti-restart function, electric break and Active Feedback Sensing Technology (AFT), which shuts the tool down if it detects the rotation speed suddenly slowing.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK said: “The launch of the new 40VMax XGT linetrimmers and brush cutter provide customers with even greater choice when selecting a high performance tool to tackle the most demanding garden and grounds maintenance tasks. These machines deliver the power usually associated with petrol-engines but with all the benefits of cordless.”

The continually expanding XGT portfolio of garden machinery now includes more than 35 products including lawnmowers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, blowers and earth augers.
