Battery power becomes number one equipment choice

Battery power becomes number one equipment choice: After five years of educating domestic and professional users on the environmental, health and performance benefits of battery-powered outdoor power equipment, EGO has now concluded its Challenge 2025 campaign with the release of a new whitepaper.

Summarising years of research and awareness activity from EGO, the whitepaper also includes research from industry trade body, the European Garden Machinery Federation (EGMF). The data shows that between 2019 and 2024, the percentage of petrol-powered equipment in use across Europe fell from 36% to 24%. In sharp contrast, electric cordless equipment almost doubled in use, rising from 28% to 48%.

Battery power becomes number one equipment choice

This is mirrored exactly in sales of new equipment, with electric cordless rising from 33% to 58%, and petrol falling from 40% to 26%.

Drawing on five years of campaign insights, field data, and market research, the whitepaper also explores results from emissions, noise and vibration testing from independent testing specialists, and evaluates whether EGO’s vision to establish battery power as the principal power source for outdoor power equipment, was reached.

Vince Brauns, Group Product Director, for EGO, said: “Our latest whitepaper shows clearly that our Challenge 2025 vision for battery power had a clear and significant impact on the industry. When we began the campaign, battery power was seen as a compromise. Users who had used petrol for decades; could not believe that this new technology could give them the power, performance or runtime that they were accustomed to, and all without the strong fumes, loud noise or high vibrations. With misconceptions at their highest, we decided that it was time to show users the impact that using petrol tools was having on themselves and the environment around them.”

Challenge 2025 was launched in 2020 with one goal in mind: to educate and empower change in domestic and professional outdoor power equipment users to make battery the principal power source and leave petrol in the past. The hope was that by educating users about the advantages of using battery-powered outdoor power equipment, EGO could dispel misconceptions, reduce emissions and noise pollution, and increase user comfort and safety.

All these things were achievable with the technology available in 2020; however, a lack of awareness about the harmful nature of petrol, combined with uninformed perceptions of battery power, meant that mindset was a barrier to change. But now, as technology continues to advance, and with calls from industry bodies such as the Climate Change Committee to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is clear the market is shifting in favour of cleaner, quieter and safer equipment.

Vince Brauns continues: “The campaign has enabled us to advocate for battery power in both the UK and European markets and has ultimately helped to reposition battery-powered tools from a niche alternative to a staple choice. While there is still a minority who will choose petrol-power over battery-power, due to the data-backed information we have shared over the past five years, the conversation has fundamentally changed.”

Working with specialist partners, this powerful and thought-provoking campaign commissioned market research to understand the attitudes and perceptions of over 1,200 outdoor power equipment users, evaluated the performance of petrol and battery-powered tools against noise, vibration and emissions, made Freedom of Information requests to understand the use of petrol tools by local authorities in Clean Air Zones and generated extensive press and social media coverage to heighten awareness.

While Challenge 2025 was successful in bringing battery power to the forefront of the industry, as the principal power source for outdoor power equipment, this is only the beginning of securing a cleaner future for generations to come.

Avant Optitemp® Cube Provides Portable Power

Avant Optitemp® Cube Provides Portable Power: Avant Tecno’s subsidiary Avant Power started manufacturing batteries for their electric loaders in 2024. They have produced over 500 battery packs that enable a full day of work with a single charge for the Avant e-series loaders.

Quickly gaining popularity, the OptiTemp® batteries signaled a new era for electric loaders in terms of capacity, longer operating time and lifecycle, safety, sustainability, and affordability. Now they’re taking the OptiTemp® concept further by introducing Avant Power’s first mobile and compact energy storage solution: the OptiTemp® Cube product line.

Avant Optitemp® Cube Provides Portable Power

Avant Optitemp® Cube Provides Portable Power

Mobile power for any application

The OptiTemp® Cube 50 is Avant Power’s answer to a growing demand for portable energy storage solutions in the loader and work machine market. It is an ideal companion for Avant’s e-series electric loaders. The OptiTemp® Cube 50 can provide the 27 kWh OptiTemp® battery with two full charges, and four charges for the 13,5 kWh battery.

“As our battery production increases and more e-series loaders are being adopted, we have discovered that the OptiTemp® technology works equally well within portable energy solutions. Our loaders are often used at work sites without charging facilities. A portable power unit is ideal for providing more juice at construction sites, remote outdoor locations, forests, events, and many other applications. They are also great accessories for rental and leasing companies,” Avant Power’s COO Mikko Piepponen highlights.

While similar solutions exist, the OptiTemp® Cube is a unique product thanks to its immersion cooling technology, robust structure, and reliable performance in any environment. “The OptiTemp® Cubes are like our loaders in many respects: they are compact, durable, highly portable, quiet, and extremely safe,” Mikko says.

OptiTemp® guarantees premium performance

Despite their compact size, OptiTemp® batteries have a high power density that enables premium capacity and rapid charging. The OptiTemp® thermal management system keeps temperatures optimized when the battery is in use or plugged into a charger.

All cells are surrounded by a cooling liquid in the battery’s submersible structure. The immersion cooling system controls temperature and guarantees optimized performance in both freezing and hot weather. In cold conditions, the battery automatically pre-heats before use, and the temperature management system maintains operating temperature during use.

The system also ensures that the battery won’t overheat, making it extremely safe to use.

“While the OptiTemp® Cube 50 is intended primarily as a companion for Avant loaders, the upcoming OptiTemp® Cube 100 will provide portable energy for all kinds of machinery, including mining and forestry. These products will pave the way for our larger solutions in the future. Stay tuned!” Mikko concludes.

Traditionally, debris loaders have struggled to cope with peak volumes of wet, heavy and compacted material such as leaves and other organic debris, leading to engine strain, higher fuel use and downtime. On top of that, many engines were awkward to service, so even small breakdowns caused long delays. For contractors and municipalities, that meant rising costs, missed schedules and extra pressure on crews. These challenges drove Billy Goat to identify a clear goal: to find a solution tough enough for heavy-duty professional demands, while remaining efficient and easy to service.

Billy Goat’s engineers reviewed and evaluated several large commercial engines on the market to determine which could best meet the demands of the DL37. Ultimately, the Vanguard® 27,6 kW EFI/ETC V-Twin BIG BLOCK™ engine stood out as the clear choice for meeting the high-demand performance required.

Although Billy Goat is part of the Briggs & Stratton family, the decision to use a Vanguard engine was based on suitability above all else. The EFI/ETC V-Twin offered the torque and durability needed to drive Billy Goat’s largest impeller while maintaining strong vacuum and debris reduction. Its EFI/ETC technology also cuts fuel consumption, solves cold-start issues in winter, and keeps performance stable under fluctuating loads – directly addressing the key challenges of demanding clean-up work.

In addition, Vanguard’s three-year commercial warranty and comprehensive service network provides users greater assurance that the equipment will deliver long-term reliability with minimal downtime. By pairing Billy Goat’s innovation with Vanguard’s trusted engineering, the DL3701VE debris loader delivers a solution that professionals can depend on.

“From an engineering perspective, the integration of a Vanguard engine was more than just fitting a larger unit to the frame”, said Tim Ummenthum, Engineering Manager at Billy Goat EMEA. “We collaborated closely with our Vanguard colleagues to calibrate the engine’s torque, power delivery and load response to the DL37’s mechanical systems, ensuring reliability and serviceability weren’t compromised. The result is a system where the engine and machine complement one another, delivering consistent performance under demanding conditions”.

Feedback from landscaping and groundcare professionals, contractors, and municipal teams has been particularly positive, with the EFI/ETC system being a standout benefit. EFI/ETC engine’s proven ability to reduce fuel consumption by up to 25% and simplify maintenance has had a clear impact in the field. Combined with the engine’s reliability in all weather conditions, the DL3701VE has allowed businesses to complete jobs more efficiently while keeping downtime to a minimum.

By partnering with Vanguard, Billy Goat achieved exactly what it set out to do: deliver a debris loader tough enough for heavy-duty demands, yet efficient and easy to service. The DL3701VE stands as proof of that success.

Dennie Smeets, Senior Product Manager at Billy Goat EMEA, states: “The Vanguard 27,6 kW horizontal shaft V-Twin engine is a reliable and powerful product and an excellent choice for demanding professional applications, no matter the requirements. Combining the powerful and dependable Vanguard commercial engine with Billy Goat’s cutting-edge debris loader created the perfect solution to a long-standing debris processing issue.
