PRO 34R Works Wonders For Wolves

PRO 34R Works Wonders For Wolves: Seven new Dennis PRO 34R rotary mowers have recently been purchased by Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, and deputy head groundsman Anthony Parker claims they have made a huge improvement to turf maintenance operations at both the Molineux Stadium and the Club’s Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground.

Since the 2016 takeover by Fosun – a Chinese conglomerate and investment company, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, one of the greatest names in early professional football and one of the first of the Football League’s 12 founder members, are back where they belong.

PRO 34R Works Wonders For Wolves

Promoted back to England’s top flight and impressing on their return to the Premier League, exciting times lie ahead after the Club finished in a very respectable 7th position and continue to make their presence known in the transfer market. However, while it may well be the results on the pitch which are grabbing the headlines, improvements are also being made behind the scenes.

“It just all seemed to come together at the same time,” said Anthony. “The new owners arrived and more investment was available for equipment, the club were doing well and it just all went hand in hand.”

At a time when the Club was investing in new turf maintenance equipment the Dennis PRO 34R was launched and Anthony explained why the purchase of these new machines became the number one priority.

“We used to use six small rotary mowers which did a decent job but because of the additional pitch lighting we purchased, we needed to take more staff off the rotaries in order to have more help putting the lighting rigs out during the winter months. When we saw the PRO 34R’s come to the marketplace, it just made complete sense to get a fleet of these in so we purchased four for the training ground and three for the stadium.”

The Dennis PRO 34R is a 34″ (860mm) rotary mower which has been designed to help groundsmen achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface. It is ideal for sports pitches producing the enviable ‘Dennis Stripes’ while a powerful vacuum flow collects debris quickly and efficiently.

The angle of the cutting deck and twin blades can be easily adjusted using a single ‘click adjuster’ ensuring the mower is suitable for changing conditions and meeting groundsmen’s requirements.

Since its launch in 2018 the PRO 34R has received rave reviews with many groundsmen praising the machine and the speed of its operation.

“With these bigger machines you are allowing more staff to go elsewhere to do additional jobs,” said Anthony. “At the training ground we didn’t rotary cut very often because it was such a time consuming task – normally we had to wait until the first team were off for a day and then maybe six of us would get on the small rotaries and it would take quite a while.

However, with these new PRO 34R’s the staff are using them straight away after a training session to clean the pitches up. They are using them every day and they have improved the pitches no end.

“It is a very user friendly machine and it is extremely adaptable because it has so many different gears. If the time allows then you can go over the pitch as slow as you want cleaning up all the debris efficiently but it is also incredibly quick – you put it into fourth gear and you are done in no time at all. You can get a pitch cleaned up in about 40 minutes with three of you.

“It is great when you leave the stadium after a match-day knowing everything has been done and everything is clean – it certainly helps me sleep easily!”

At the stadium, Anthony and the team use the PRO 34R and the Dennis G860 in conjunction by relying on the rotaries to cut down to 25mm before switching to the cylinder mowers for the final presentation cuts (23mm) in preparation for match-day.

While the G860 has long been the industry’s number one mower of choice for presentation, Anthony is hugely impressed with the finish achieved by the PRO 34R.

“The finish on the rotaries is absolutely superb and I think you could even use them for a match-day cut because they will provide presentation of the highest quality.”

On Course With Pogo Pro

On Course With Pogo Pro: Knowledge is power. And for Geoff Smith, Course Manager at Abridge Golf & Country Club in Romford, an Open qualifying venue, his use of the POGO Pro soil and turf management meter “provides an unprecedented level of information into my greens’ moisture and salinity levels, as well as canopy temperature, for example, to enable me to make more informed and much better decisions about irrigation”.

Geoff’s investment in POGO Pro was spurred by the installation of a new irrigation system and reservoir, costing in excess of £500,000, of which the most recent stage was completed earlier this year at the long-established (since 1962) 18-hole Championship course that occupies 240 acres in Essex. “I could immediately see the benefits of POGO Pro and I knew it would give me an accurate insight into the current state of the surfaces, as well as enable me to build a true history of exactly what’s going on beneath in the top layer.”

On Course With Pogo Pro

In addition to measuring the most influential variables governing turf performance – moisture, salinity, canopy temperature , nutrition and turf stress/disease, for example – POGO Pro also connects remotely to any Apple or android device and its integrated GPS features include precise location, geospatial condition analysis, cup placements, sprinkler positioning and patterns, area measurement and custom mapping.

Geoff continues: “We have push-up greens on solid clay and watering was very random before the new fully computerised irrigation system with pop-up sprinklers to all greens, tees, approaches, surrounds and 12/14 fairways. We often simply turned on the water for a few minutes at a time and almost guessed that what we doing was enough, not using a moisture meter. Looking back on last year’s very hot spell, I probably over-watered (and I’m guessing I was not the only one!) but now, with POGO Pro, I’m making much more informed decisions on greens where I maintain moisture levels of 26/30%, and on other areas I have also started recording moisture levels and adjusting irrigation accordingly. Today, that sometimes means certain greens need only hand watering, and that will undoubtedly save us money and means far better and more responsible water usage.”

The use of POGO Pro occupies one of Geoff’s eight-man team for two-three hours at a time, he says, “but we will be including the fairways and approaches as we go forwards”. That investment in time will, however, be well worth it, he says. Once the information taken by the POGO Pro is updated to my computer, I can create maps of dry and wet areas. I can create visuals in either map form or graphs showing the history of each green (or all greens) and see definite patterns which means that between my deputy and myself we will be making make much more informed decisions on watering and feeding programmes.”

Geoff, aged 52, joined the club 20 years ago after 12 years in financial services, joining Abridge as an assistant and becoming deputy head greenkeeper approximately two years later after originally learning his trade at the London Golf Club. Upon taking up the Course Manager’s reins at Abridge 13 years ago, he immediately set about instigating, under the guidance of the STRI, a regime to minimise what was thick thatch in the fairways sward and other areas. It’s a process, he says, that has continued ever since. It initially included Koroing the fairways (for the first three successive years), followed by overseeding and thereafter heavy scarifying by using a Trilo machine twice a year, plus a regular regime of verti-draining three/four times a year

On Course With Pogo Pro

Tees and approaches have been subjected to the same process and greens receive verti-draining twice a year plus a spring, summer and autumn regime of coring/solid spiking, verti-cutting and topdressing every three-four weeks. Combined with improved cultural practices and reductions in fertiliser rates, the results are very clear to see, he says, “by concentrating on what’s going on underneath the surface” and tools like the POGO Pro help Geoff to understand this even more.

The greens are hand-cut most days – usually to 4.1 mm in summer and 6/6.5 mm in winter – while the tees are to 9/10 mm and the fairways 15 mm and sometimes down to 13 mm in the summer.

His long-term use of Rigby Taylor amenity products – including the Apex, Microlite and Polypro fertilisers, Breaker Fairway wetting agent and the made-to-order Propel-R/Activate-R wetting agent mix, as well as Greenor herbicide, Magnet Velocite liquid iron and Seaquest seaweed extract – complements his use of a variety of grass mixes: R9 ultra-fine dwarf rye; R103 Browntop bent; and the R25 CRT tetraploid, creeping and diploid rye blend.

While he affirms that the products “always do what they say they can do”, Geoff also says the input from Rigby Taylor’s Technical Sales Manager Mark Keysell has also proved indispensable “and that includes working together on a disease management strategy utilising bio-friendly products”. He adds: “I’m proud of the presentation and playability of the course and I want to keep it that way, so I ensure I maintain this partnership with such a professional company.”

He concludes: “I’m never satisfied; it’s a case of continual improvement here with, for instance, plans to complete the irrigation system (by installing it on two remaining fairways), as well as the construction of the 34,000 m3 reservoir that will eventually feed the complete system. We have also constructed a buggy path around the front nine holes and the back nine will be completed this autumn. We’re investing in the future success of the club and the course which this year sees 147 societies playing here and is enjoying a steady increase in membership.”

PRO 34R Tops Warwick Wish-List

PRO 34R Tops Warwick Wish-List: Duncan Toon, Grounds Manager for Warwick Independent Schools Foundation, says that when he heard rumours about the new Dennis PRO 34R rotary mower, he instantly added it to his wish-list.

Warwick School, Warwick Junior School, King’s High School and Warwick Preparatory School are justly proud of their sporting success, including national awards, and the ability to provide all its pupils the opportunity to play their chosen sport.  Essential to their achievements are high quality and well-maintained sports pitches.  Therefore, the Foundation has recently made additional investments in its grounds in a bid to ensure the very finest sporting facilities.

PRO 34R Tops Warwick Wish-List

After joining the Foundation from Birmingham City FC nine months ago, Duncan’s first port of call was to acquire a new fleet of machinery which would help him to maintain the sports surfaces to the highest standards. It was while he was researching an extensive list of equipment that he first caught wind of the news Dennis was bringing out a new product.

“I had heard rumours about this new machine which was set to be a game changer and Dennis was always on my wish-list because I know they manufacture reliable machinery. I arranged a demonstration as soon as I could and based on what I saw I knew I just had to have one. I was amazed with how well built it was – it was robust and the finish was fantastic.”

As Duncan says, the rumours started to mount after the PRO 34R was first introduced to the industry at SALTEX 2017 with the sole purpose of gathering feedback from potential end users. Over the course of the next twelve months, the mower was refined and developed based on the input from the groundsmen who would eventually be using it. With no stone left unturned, the all new PRO 34R was unveiled at SALTEX 2018.

The Dennis PRO 34R is a 34” (860mm) rotary mower which has been designed to help groundsmen achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface. It is ideal for sports pitches and lawns producing the enviable ‘Dennis Stripes’ while a powerful vacuum flow collects debris quickly and efficiently.

The angle of the cutting deck and twin blades can be easily adjusted using a single ‘click adjuster’ ensuring the mower is suitable for changing conditions and meeting groundsmen’s requirements.

“The best feature about the PRO 34R is the presentation and the incredibly fast clean-ups. We use it to clean the pitch up after rugby matches and also after training sessions and the brush on the front is a big bonus as it enables you to really get into the sward.

“You’re achieving two key maintenance tasks with it – you are cleaning up all the debris and you are also getting that amazing finish. I’m really impressed with it.

“It is also incredibly simple to use, especially if you have previously used a Dennis G860 cylinder mower. The handlebars are similar and it is just like riding a bike – you never forget.

“In fact, I’m seriously considering ordering more because of the speed of the clean-ups. We just haven’t got the staffing levels to use our other rotary mowers but because the PRO 34R’s are so much bigger, it would enable us to get the task done in no time at all.”

Based on the success of his PRO 34R, Duncan did indeed order more and is now the proud owner of four Dennis PRO 34R rotary mowers.

PRO 34R The Ultimate Rotary

PRO 34R The Ultimate Rotary: After a long-term search for the ultimate rotary mower, Shrewsbury School grounds manager, Andy Richards, believes that he has finally found the mower he has been looking for in the Dennis PRO 34R.

Shrewsbury School has a world-class reputation for all-round excellence. As well as boasting fantastic academic results the school is also renowned for highly competitive sports teams. The pupils compete internationally in cricket and its football teams are considered to be some of the best in the UK.

PRO 34R The Ultimate Rotary

In matching the reputation of its teams, the sports pitches are also highly regarded and there’s a reason that the first team pitches at Shrewsbury School are on par with most Premier League football pitches or County Cricket pitches. That reason is grounds manager Andy Richards, who has been in his current position since 2010. Ever the perfectionist, Andy and his team arguably encounter some of the highest usage in sports turf, and even still he insists on leaving no stone unturned.

Andy demands the best in all aspects of his role and even more so when it comes to turf maintenance equipment. After struggling to find a rotary mower which matched his expectations, Andy claims that the solution arrived in the newly launched Dennis PRO 34R.

“Over recent years we have struggled to find a rotary mower that actually ticked every box – they were either too fast or not fast enough; some were too heavy and some felt too light; and there were some that would not pick up the debris clean enough or produce a good enough cut.

“I saw the new rotary mower at SALTEX and knew it would be good because it is a Dennis mower and I already know the quality of cut from their cylinder mowers. It actually seemed to me that a rotary mower was something which was missing from their portfolio so when it did finally come to market I put my name down as soon as possible to get one. It is safe to say that it definitely hasn’t let me down.”

“We bought two of them and I would say that they are easily our most used machines,” said Andy.

“We originally just bought them to hoover up the debris but we quickly found that the cut is comparable to a cylinder mower so we started mowing with them too. Our first team football pitch is surrounded by 30 trees so in autumn we used to come out in the morning of a match day and leaves would be all over it. We actually used to use a cut and collect ride-on mower and then follow up with a Dennis cylinder mower but now we just use the Pro 34 R. It does a brilliant job, saves us time, keeps the weight off the pitch and avoids wheel marks from the heavier ride-on machines.

“I had a feeling it would also work well on our cricket pitches and it has. The amount of debris that is produced during the cricket season is huge. We blow it off with blowers from the surrounding wickets so they can get covered and then the morning after we just hoover it all up with the PRO 34R.

“Maintenance wise, it has been completely trouble-free. It’s my favourite machine at the moment and I think it will take some beating,” said Andy.
