Summer Drainage Projects Across Southern England

Summer Drainage Projects Across Southern England: Summer provides an ideal window for major drainage works on golf courses, with firm ground conditions and reduced disruption while many members are away during the holiday period. This allows essential infrastructure projects to be delivered efficiently while minimising impact on play.

Greg Evans Golf Course Solutions has supported a number of drainage projects across southern England this summer, with consultant Greg Evans providing drainage design and project management from planning through to delivery.

Working closely with owners, general managers, course managers, and specialist contractors, each project was planned around the specific challenges of the site. The focus was on practical outcomes, clear communication, close coordination with club operations, and minimal disruption to play.

Recent projects include:

  • Singing Hills Golf Club – Phase Two of the club’s drainage programme, involving the installation of over 7,000 linear metres of pipe
  • Old Fold Manor Golf Club – Drainage works to the 1st green and 2nd tee
  • Sunningdale Heath Golf Club – Completion of drainage works on the 10th fairway, finalising the club’s main fairway drainage network

Each project was designed to improve surface performance through the wetter months, reduce the impact of heavy rainfall, and provide more consistent turf quality over the longer term.

With winters becoming wetter and more unpredictable, drainage is increasingly important for playability and turf protection. These projects highlight the importance of clear planning, close coordination with contractors, and careful on-site management,” said Greg Evans.

Further drainage projects are planned for 2026, as Greg Evans Golf Course Solutions continues to work with clubs to deliver reliable, year-round playing conditions.

ISEKI Tried and Tested on Major Projects at East Renfrewshire

ISEKI Tried and Tested on Major Projects at East Renfrewshire: When it came to picking a new tractor, it was a “no-brainer” for East Renfrewshire Golf Club to opt for another ISEKI in the form of the TG6507 with a C4+ loader.

The moorland course is based on the outskirts of Glasgow, with stunning views of Ben Lomond and the Trossachs. The course demands a lot from a tractor, with a heavy workload and hilly terrain providing daily challenges.

Upgrading their previous machine was brought on by a desire to handle larger winter projects in-house, and after speaking with local ISEKI dealer Fairways GM, Club Manager Iain Russell and Course Manager Barry Nichol were set on the TG6507.

“In the past, we’ve not been able to do a particular project because we didn’t have the right machinery, but that’s been added to our list now,” Iain explains. “Barry and the team here all work collaboratively, and they work together in producing the winter programme.

“It’s quite extensive. They put a lot of work into it, and they almost look forward to that more than the summer. They love tackling these major projects, and having the right equipment is vital so they can do that. The members also look forward to the winter programme coming out to see what will be in hand through the winter going into the new season.”

The Iseki TG6507 is a high-performance compact tractor that is well-suited for golf course maintenance. Featuring hydrostatic or IQ transmission options, it provides smooth and precise control, while the high-capacity lift arms and compatibility with a wide range of implements make it a versatile and durable choice for demanding workloads.

Course Manager Barry is taking full advantage of the versatility, with the TG6507 put to work tining, completing other aerating works, loading, clearing car parks and moving pallets with the front forks. With his previous experience using ISEKI tractors at the club, there was no question what his next pick would be.

“It was a no-brainer to get another ISEKI, to be honest with you,” Barry explains. “It is tried and tested on this course, and it’s very much suited to ourselves up here and right across the golfing industry as well.

“Versatility is important and we get that from the tractor, but it is very reliable as well. We’ve had no issues on the mechanical side of it and it really does a great job. It’s got plenty of power to get around our hilly terrain, and we’ll have it in full swing throughout autumn, winter and spring with no issues.”

Jebsen & Jessen major projects

Jebsen & Jessen major projects: Jebsen & Jessen Technology – Turf & Irrigation (JJ T&I), a division of the Technology business unit of diversified industrial conglomerate Jebsen & Jessen Group, has further cemented its presence in the region through major collaborations and partnerships with leading golf clubs in Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

In Singapore, JJ T&I gained a major vote of confidence from the world-renowned Sentosa Golf Club, as their long-standing relationship was marked by a new 10-year partnership in March 2022 – the first partnership in South East Asia of such scale. JJ T&I, as the official distributor of The Toro Company, will support Sentosa Golf Club’s mission to provide a world-class playing experience, through the supply of hybrid and electric equipment and water-saving irrigation systems. These will also complement the club’s commitment to its sustainability goals, with a pledge to be the world’s first carbon-neutral golf club by 2022.

In Ha Nam, Vietnam, JJ T&I will be supplying and installing the irrigation systems for the new 36-hole Rose Canyon Resort, designed by Nicklaus Design and developed by BRG Group. Alongside Toro, JJ T&I will be supplying the irrigation systems and providing irrigation installation services for the South course, which is expected to be completed in late 2022. Work on the North course will begin as soon as the South course has been completed.

Other new projects awarded to JJ T&I in Vietnam include the Golden Sands Golf Resort in Hue. The turnkey project is estimated to be completed within the second quarter of 2023, and JJ T&I will be handling all stages of the project, from supplying irrigation systems and materials to providing installation services.

JJ T&I was also awarded a contract in February 2022 by PT. Bogor Raya Development’s Klub Golf Bogor Raya, one of the most prestigious golf courses in Bogor, Indonesia, for the supply of golf course equipment. JJ T&I provided steadfast support for Klub Golf Bogor Raya in times of need, providing much-needed turf maintenance units after a fire damaged the premises. Klub Golf Bogor Raya was hosting a golf tournament the same day and the maintenance units supplied, which included lawn mower units, allowed them to maintain the golf courses and ensure the highest quality of standards for gameplay.

JJ T&I is dedicated to providing high-quality expertise and end-to-end solutions to meet all turf care and landscaping needs. We are proud that these golf clubs have put their trust in us and recognise the value that we provide, furthering our position as a leading full-service solution provider in the Southeast Asia region,” said Philipp Hoffmann, Regional Director of JJ T&I.

Eden Project’s Robotic Gardener

Eden Project’s Robotic Gardener: The Eden Project, a popular visitor destination, has added a new member to its horticultural team this spring.

Husqvarna Automower®, a robotic lawnmower which works unassisted throughout the day and night, has been installed at the Cornwall site to maintain the grounds surrounding the famous iconic bubble-like Biomes.

Eden Project's Robotic Gardener

Nestled in a huge crater the size of 30 football pitches, the Eden Project Horticultural team have a job on their hands keeping the lawns in immaculate condition all year round. To help save time, the team turned to Husqvarna for an eco-friendly solution.

Kevin Ashmore, Husqvarna Professional UK Manager said: “With sustainability at the heart of the Eden Project it was important that whatever solution we provided was as eco-friendly as possible and Husqvarna Automower® fits the bill.”

With over one million visitors a year, the Eden Project was impressed with Husqvarna’s battery ranges and the low noise and zero-emission features of Husqvarna Automower®.

Kevin added: “One of the key decision makers for the Eden Project was that Automower® could be programmed to run through the night so as not to impact on any visitors during the day.”

Niki Hall, Specialist Horticulturist at the Eden Project said: “Husqvarna Automower® brings fantastic benefits to our team. The arena is now in top condition and this allows more time for the horticulture team to spend in other areas rather than cutting the lawns. It is quiet and unobtrusive, though very funky – like a Formula One mower. It has no emissions and low energy consumption. It can also be used in all weathers.”

How does it work?

Husqvarna Automower® works via the installation of an electrical boundary wire around the desired cutting area. With a range of models capable of managing lawn sizes up to 5,000m² in any weather, Husqvarna Automower® can tackle even the most complex of lawns, including those with rough terrain and slopes up to 45%. For areas above 5,000m² more than one machine can be used to increase area coverage.

Cutting just a few millimetres of grass at a time, Automower® keeps lawns neat and healthy by distributing small grass clippings back into the lawn to act as a natural fertiliser. This means there is no need for the collection and disposal of grass clippings.

Husqvarna has been the world leader in robotic lawnmowers since it pioneered the technology in 1995, constantly refining and improving its machines to fit the needs of consumers. Today’s Automower® can work in rain or shine, day or night. Its clever system allows it to cut the lawn in random directions, making sure that each square foot is covered. When the mower’s charge runs low, it returns to its charging bay unassisted, meaning lawns become a hassle-free environment, affording you spare time to do other things.
