AMS Contractors Invest in Shelton Universal

AMS Contractors Invest in Shelton Universal: Chichester based AMS Contractors Ltd were the first to invest in the latest machine from Lincolnshire based drainage experts Shelton Drainage Ltd after a visit to the BTME in January where Shelton launched the machine onto the market.

The 6 Tonne Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper has been designed to give the ability to backfill either gravel or sand at the flick of a switch, therefore reducing manual handling of the hoppers and giving improved efficiencies as the backfilling operation is much quicker and can keep up with the trencher, reducing downtime.

AMS Contracting offer a range of service in the amenity, groundworks and landscaping sector and already had a Shelton 3 Tonne Fast Flow in their fleet prior to purchase. AMS Director Myles Strange explained why they chose to invest and how the machine is performing: “We were looking for a machine that would allow us to do as many jobs as possible using one operator and one tractor, allowing us to reduce haulage and machinery costs associated with each job. Every job is different, you never know when you can backfill behind the trencher or use the central feed hopper following behind, so having a machine that does both was a no brainer! The machine also doubles up as a material handler which is very helpful with secondary drainage jobs. We opted to have the spreaders fitted on the back of ours which worked very well. We were previously using a 3T Fast Flow, which is a great machine on single pitch applications, but longer runs meant more fill ups and did take a bit more time, none the less, it’s great if you don’t have a bigger chassis tractor available. The machine was very easy to use, far more nimble than we expected as it is quite a large machine. The control box is very straightforward, with a lot of fine adjustments so you can get the machine to do exactly as you want. We were very impressed with how easily you could swap between gravel and sand, just one adjustment in the hopper which takes 2 minutes and you’re away. We opted for the sand spinners and stainless hopper extras on our machine.

All of our Shelton products have been excellent and I would recommend to all companies in sportsturf. Richard is always at the end of the phone if you have any questions and is very helpful at all times! This machine cut out a lot of hire, operator and haulage costs and we look forward to doing more business in the future.”

The unique design of the Universal means customers can choose from a number of different combinations: A stand alone Universal base unit or with the addition of any or all of the following options: A Gravel Cart (Side Discharge Unit), Sand Spreader or 6 Tonne Fast Flow (Centre Fill Unit).

Shelton will be on stand B112 with the Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper at IOG SALTEX.

Shelton Transform Golf Club Greens

Shelton Transform Golf Club Greens: Lincolnshire drainage experts Shelton Sportsturf Drainage returned to Ross-on-Wye Golf Club earlier this year in the first week of September to install drainage on the remaining 13 greens after the first five had been completed one year previously. Prior to any of the work starting, flooded greens had been causing course closures and the use of forward pins.

The Shelton Lightning Drain System installed in the first 5 greens, had performed so well over the 1st year, turning the most waterlogged greens into their driest greens which remained in play all year, that it was decided to complete the programme, and drain the remaining 13 greens this September using  the same technique. Lightning Drain is a drainage technique pioneered by Shelton using their System 25 trencher; where 35mm wide trenches are excavated into the green using a high-speed digging wheel, 25mm perforated land drainage pipe and Lytag® are installed in a one-pass operation. The club recruited a team of volunteer members who worked alongside Sheltons and the work was completed in just 9 days.

Seeking advice from the club’s agronomist (STRI) on a post recovery programme the greens were then re-seeded using a mixture of dwarf rye (as a nursery crop) and Fescue grass mixed in with the top dressing, giving excellent results; the faster growing rye grass seed emerged quickly allowing the greens to recover and they were back in play in 4-6 weeks, whilst the slower growing Fescue came through before the rye started to respond to mowing. Ross-on-Wye’s Greens Chairman Hugh Elliott said: “The results have been excellent, the grass was growing through the trench lines within 10 days, and it has made a huge difference to the playability of the course. The whole project has been a great success and thanks must go to our brilliant volunteer members, STRI and the team from Shelton – I would recommend Shelton Lightning Drain System to any Club needing to drain their greens”

The New Shelton 6 Tonne Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper

The New Shelton 6 Tonne Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper: “Back-fill drainage trenches with both sand and gravel at the flick of switch!”

“One machine multiple capabilities”

The New Shelton 6 Tonne Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper

Lincolnshire sportsturf drainage experts Shelton are launching their latest machine at the BTME: The 6 Tonne Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper has been designed to fulfil a combination of different tasks associated with backfilling and sand spreading on sportsturf after drainage has been carried out. Its unique design means that customers can choose from a number of different combinations: The Universal base unit is available as standalone unit or is available with the addition of any or all of the following options:

  • Gravel Cart (Side Discharge Unit)
  • Sand Spreader
  • 6 Tonne Fast Flow (Centre Fill Unit)

The Universal differs from other hoppers in that it contains a moving floor in the main hopper in the form of a conveyor, which can feed a centre fill to place gravel or sand into the trench after drainage pipes have been installed. The hopper is longer and lower for easier loading and the conveyor can move material forwards or backwards depending on the job required; it will move forward for either a Side Discharge Unit (Gravel Cart) or in reverse to fill a Sand Spreader. The Universal comes complete with electro hydraulic controls including hydraulic motor speed control giving the option to speed up or slow down, depending on the material which is being used.  This can all be operated from the tractor cab and the addition of a hydraulic block, rather than valves means that one operation will not affect another, giving optimum control and performance. The ability to backfill both gravel and sand at the flick of a switch gives the added advantage that the backfilling operation is much quicker and can keep up with the trencher, reducing downtime.

The New Shelton 6 Tonne Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper

Shelton Sportsturtf Drainage will be on stand 281 in the Red Zone at the BTME and The 6 Tonne Universal Sand and Gravel Hopper will be on display at the entrance to the show.
