Following a structured selection process, the partnership provides both stability and flexibility, giving Replay the confidence to plan for growth while maintaining consistent standards on every pitch. In its first year, the company expects to service over 100 natural turf surfaces, with ambitious expansion anticipated in the years ahead.

Under the deal, Replay secures a reliable supply of core OAS products, including perennial ryegrass seed mixtures, controlled-release fertilisers, herbicides, and specialist inputs designed specifically for professional sports turf. But the agreement goes beyond the basics.

Embedded technical and agronomic support means Replay teams have access to soil analysis, laboratory testing, application planning tools, seasonal guidance, and ongoing technical advice, ensuring every decision is backed by data and best-practice insight.

Commenting on the partnership, Phil Dewhurst, Regional Sales Director at Origin Amenity Solutions, said:

Matt Bartle appointed Group Head of Commercial Strategy: Replay Group has appointed Matt Bartle as its new Group Head of Commercial Strategy, a newly created role designed to support the business’s continued growth, diversification and long-term strategic direction.

The appointment comes at a significant time for Replay Group, following private equity investment and the evolution of the business into four distinct divisions: Replay Maintenance, Replay Resurfacing, Replay Racquets and Replay Natural Turf.

Matt brings with him more than two decades of experience across sport, infrastructure and facilities development. His career began in 2001 at the Football Foundation, where he was part of the organisation from its inception, before moving to The FA, where he spent around ten years working across a range of national projects

In 2017, Matt founded Tri Sports Consultancy, an infrastructure masterplanning business supporting grassroots sport and organisations with projects ranging from 3G and natural turf pitches to training facilities. Throughout that time, he maintained close links with Replay.

“I’ve always had a strong association with Replay,” said Matt. “When the opportunity came to join the organisation, it was a no-brainer. The trajectory of the business and what the next three to five years could look like made it a really exciting proposition.”

Matt’s new role combines elements of commercial leadership, business development and strategic oversight. While not a traditional sales director role, the commercial team and function sit firmly within his remit.

“One of the key drivers behind becoming Replay Group is being able to talk more about the breadth of what we do,” he explained. “Maintenance is what we’re best known for, but there’s so much more to the organisation.”

That diversification includes the formal separation of Replay Resurfacing, an area the business has been delivering for more than a decade. By bringing resurfacing into its own division, Replay can take a more proactive approach, offering lifecycle planning, financial modelling and long-term solutions to its extensive client base.

“We’re already a trusted maintenance partner to over a thousand organisations nationwide,” said Matt. “Clients were already asking us about resurfacing, so formalising that offer allows us to add even more value, while maintaining that connection with them throughout the lifecycle of their facilities.”

The Replay Racquets division is another key growth area, encompassing tennis, pickleball and padel.

“There’s a huge boom in padel at the moment, but standards are critical,” he said. “We work closely with organisations like SAPCA to ensure everything we do adheres to technical guidance and best practice. We won’t compromise on quality because safety, longevity and trust matter.”

Matt is also excited by the launch of Replay Natural Turf, which further strengthens the Group’s ability to support clients with joined-up solutions.

“At its core, this is about adding value,” he added. “Whether it’s maintenance, resurfacing, rackets or natural turf, the Replay standard is non-negotiable. We want to continue leading the market, innovating and being a trusted resource for our clients for the next 20 years – just as we have been for the last 20.”

Darren said: “We recorded growth suppression of average 33 per cent as measured by clip rate, so it’s clear that the use of Attraxor® plus natural environmental factors have significantly reduced top growth. The active prohexadione calcium shrinks the Poa seedhead leading to far more consistent ball roll, improved smoothness, and a slight increase in green speed!

“Playability metrics such as green speed and bobble test rating increased dramatically after one application. Our members have also commented on the difference in the greens and the improvement in their play since we began using Attraxor®.”

Attraxor® also limits the spread of Poa annua and reduces seedhead production by up to 38%. By using an innovative formulation for fast leaf absorption, it provides almost instant results as it is activated once diluted in water at low pH.

John Quinn, Golf Course Manager at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa, has been using Attraxor® for three seasons and continues to see excellent benefits and Poa annua reduction from the PGR.

John said “I use Attraxor® every 21 days on our greens and it has lowered the mowing maintenance of the greens and complemented our existing efforts of upkeep.

“During periods of high growth, we alternate days mowing and rolling to reduce plant stress. Attraxor® gives me better control of growth rates. Throughout the 21-day period, a more uniform sward is possible each week. I’ve found that the Poa annua seedhead suppression qualities are superior to Trinexapac-ethyl products.”

Development at the heart of GMA Strategy: The Grounds Management Association (GMA) has, after the impact of the pandemic and following the impact of global events, combined with the cost-of-living crisis, focused on tackling the key issues highlighted by volunteers and professionals as priority areas to address in the grounds care industry. 

Published alongside the GMA’s 2022 Workforce Survey, the reset of the GMA’s Five-Year Strategy first launched in 2021, outlines six key priority areas that will inform and influence the association’s work to help achieve three long-term goals:

  • To support sustainable business growth and protect the sector’s interests
  • To build industry reputation and promote the sector’s contribution to society and the economy

The six strategic priority areas are:

  • Workforce development
  • People and culture
  • Services and support
  • Industry representation
  • Data and digitisation
  • Funding and investment

GMA Chief Executive, Geoff Webb said: “We know the challenges that those working in the grounds care industry face and the findings from our Annual Workforce Survey echo those issues year after year. Whilst we have made progress since revealing the results of “Groundsmanship Sports Vital Profession” in 2019, the trends first identified remain.”

“The issues are far-reaching and to make a positive difference at pace, working together as a sector, we need a shift in mindset and outlook. Working collaboratively is key to success. Members and others working in grounds care, those employing grounds staff, industry partners and suppliers, national governing bodies, professional leagues, the media, local authorities, and the education sector all have a role to play. It’s a team effort.”

The GMA’s latest report estimates that over 3,200 professional grounds managers are due to retire in the next three years and over a third of all grounds professionals are over the age of 55. The lack of young people joining the profession is evident with only 3% being under 25. A clear indication that the industry is facing a recruitment crisis and must act now to attract the next generation.

A lack of diversity also continues to be an issue in grounds management with white men still being the most dominant demographic working in the industry. 96% of professional grounds staff are male and only 3% are non-white, which is far from representative of the communities across the UK.

The report also highlights an issue with underinvestment in grounds management, both in terms of procuring the necessary equipment, and the salary levels paid to grounds staff. The association believes that there is a widespread lack of understanding of what skills, technical expertise, and equipment are required to maintain sports grounds to a satisfactory standard. An issue that will be addressed by proactively promoting the work of grounds people and reiterating the message that with no ground, there’s no game.

GMA Chief Executive, Geoff Webb continues: “When Covid hit, like many, we focused resources on adapting to the ever-changing working environment, moving to remote working and facilitating longstanding face-to-face training and events online. Likewise, many worked with limited capacity and resources during this period, this impacted on many skilled ground staff and impacted on the ability of volunteers to spend the time attending to their clubs and facilities. We have to recognise that we are still in recovery and today are met with fresh challenges such as the cost of living, the impact on the supply chain and recruitment issues.

“We have reset having to contend with a delayed SALTEX which was a fantastic success last Autumn and have spent 2022 reviewing and resetting our strategy as well as building an expanded team. This year has been about getting the right people and resources in place and 2023 will see us move from capability building to implementation as we focus on the strategic priorities and long-term goals outlined in our Strategy.

“This reset of our Strategy puts us on a path to deliver and with the continued support of our Chair and Board, we will continue to invest in building on the six key priority areas identified to meet the needs of members and the wider grounds care sector.”

Soluble strategy from Headland Amenity: A switch to a liquid feeding programme has paid dividends on the fairways at Canons Brook Golf Club. Having fallen victim to the drought of summer 2018, the fairway recovery was boosted by a new liquid regime formulated by Headland Amenity.

A tank-mix consisting of XTEND®, Elevate Fe® and Clipless NT® applied throughout 2019 has helped to encourage and maintain strong, healthy coverage as the new season approaches.

When Course Manager Damien Bowe joined Canons Brook in Harlow back in 2016, there was no nutritional programme in place for the fairways. “I quickly introduced a conventional granular programme, which we applied in April and again in September. In 2018 the hot weather hit us hard and we lost a lot of coverage but we went ahead with the granular application in April as normal which, combined with some good rainfall, stimulated good recovery and strong growth.”

To sustain the recovery and coverage achieved, Damien together with his Headland Regional Technical Manager, Peter Blackaby, formulated a liquid programme to ‘spoon-feed’ the fairways throughout the growing season, rather than merely aim to strengthen them before winter. They applied XTEND® 21-0-0 at 30L/hectare, Elevate Fe® at 20L/hectare and Clipless NT® at 1.5L/hectare every 4 weeks between June and September. “We used a low rate of Clipless NT® to keep on top of any flushes. This helped to thicken up the sward, giving us nice, controlled growth and healthy, dense fairways.”

“We also applied Headland’s TriCure AD™ separately at 2.5L/hectare, and achieved fantastic results with that, particularly in those areas that were stressed the most from the previous summer. We put this down ahead of any forecasted rainfall and it helped to hold onto any rain we got and kept the plant nice and strong. As an added bonus, it also kickstarted the germination of seed we had applied earlier in the year, in some areas of the course that hadn’t seen any growth in months.”

Despite the almost non-stop rainfall Canons Brook have seen since September, the Headland programme has ensured the fairways have emerged into 2020 strong and ready for play.
