Sustainable seed solutions from DLF: 2025 sees an exciting shake up in the sustainable seed solutions available from DLF and visitors to stand 126 at BTME 2025 can be some of the first the find out what’s new.

Among the changes is the exciting introduction of Sybille – a new slender creeping red fescue cultivar, bringing its No.1 ranking for close mown turf to a number of mixtures across the updated Johnsons Sports Seed lineup. Also new is an expanded Ultrafine Rye range which promises fast establishment, high wear tolerance and aesthetic quality for the golf and bowls market.

In their pursuit for ever-improved sustainability, DLF have introduced Sybille slender creeping red fescue. With its high density and disease tolerance, Sybille helps to supress unwanted weeds and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides. Not just a good choice for the environment and your budget, Sybille features fine leaves and beautiful summer colour making it a top-class variety for low mown areas delivered with high visual quality.

Also of significant interest for turf managers is the expanded range of Johnsons Sports Seed Ultrafine Perennial Ryegrass (PRG) mixtures. Building on the success of J Ultrafine Rye 100, DLF has introduced additional 25% and 50% formulations to provide turf managers with versatile, sustainable options for golf and bowling greens. The incredibly high wear tolerance, bolstered by the exceptionally fine leaf and high shoot density of Duranova, also makes the Ultrafine PRG range ideal high-traffic areas like tees, fairways, pathways, tennis courts and cricket outfields.

Stand 126 is the place to learn more about other developments across the DLF portfolio, such as the increased UK wildflower production to support demand and the growth of their ProFlora and ColourBoost ranges which are ideal for increasing biodiversity and colour on the golf course. It is also where you can have your say in shaping seed mixtures of the future by taking part in DLF’s Disease Watch Programme. DLF are actively seeking feedback and insights on the types and severity of diseases you are witnessing to develop future research, trials and breeding programmes. Those that share their experiences are not only helping to improve the performance of seed mixtures of the future, they can also win some excellent prizes in the process.

Dennis ES-860’s Power Sustainable Maintenance

Dennis ES-860’s Power Sustainable Maintenance: Roehampton Club, a prestigious multi-sports and social club in southwest London, has embraced sustainable practices with the introduction of two Dennis ES-860 battery-powered mowers.

Head Groundsman Simon Bailey and the grounds team have welcomed these new additions, which have helped improve the club’s maintenance of its tennis grass courts and croquet lawns.

Roehampton Club, with its vast range of facilities including an 18-hole parkland golf course, 28 tennis courts, croquet lawns, and other sports amenities, requires high standards of upkeep. The introduction of the ES-860 mowers has made a significant difference in the grounds team’s operations.

“We’ve been using Dennis mowers for over 15 years, and when it was time to upgrade, the move to electric felt like a natural step,” says Simon. “The Dennis ES-860 battery mowers are perfect for us. Being in London and surrounded by houses, we need to be mindful of any noise. These battery-powered mowers allow us to start working at 6am without disturbing our neighbours – that’s a big win for us.”

The ES-860 is a 34-inch battery-powered turf management system, designed to handle a variety of tasks using its 13 interchangeable cassettes, including cutting, scarifying, brushing, and verticutting. For Simon and the team, the flexibility of this system is one of its most valuable features.

“We use the ES-860 on our tennis courts and croquet lawns. On the tennis courts, we use them mainly for mowing, while on the croquet lawns, we use the verticutting and scarifying cassettes. The wide cutting width makes the job much quicker, and because we have two of them, we can cover a lot of ground fast,” Simon explains.

Environmental consciousness is a key focus at Roehampton Club. “We’ve got solar panels on all our roofs, and we’re committed to making our operations more sustainable, so switching to battery-powered mowers was the logical choice,” Simon says. “These mowers reduce our fuel costs, and with no hydraulics, there’s a reduced risk of spills and mechanical issues.”

Simon also highlights the impressive battery life. “We maintain 0.7 hectares of lawn tennis, and even after completing all the work, we’ve used less than 50% of the battery. What’s more, the battery performance remains consistent, whether we’re mowing, scarifying, or verticutting. It’s very reassuring.”

The adaptability of the Dennis ES-860 is a major advantage for Simon, allowing the team to change cassettes quickly and efficiently to suit the task at hand. “The best feature is the ability to swap the cassettes out in minutes. One minute, we’re verticutting, and the next, we’re mowing. This flexibility allows us to get more done in a day.”

Simon also praises the mowers for their quality of cut and ease of use. “The quality of cut is exceptional. We can control the speed and cassette speed easily, allowing for precise work without leaving marks when turning. The performance is always consistent, and we’re very happy with how they’ve enhanced our work.”

With the addition of the Dennis ES-860s, the grounds team at Roehampton Club have not only improved their day-to-day operations but have also taken a significant step toward greater sustainability. “If you’re looking to reduce costs, noise, and emissions, while maintaining a high-quality playing surface, the Dennis ES-860 is the perfect solution,” Simon concludes.

Celebrating ‘Organic September’ With Sustainable Lawn Care

Celebrating ‘Organic September’ With Sustainable Lawn Care: With Sustainable Lawn Care: ‘Organic September’ is here and the Lawn Association team firmly believes that aligning with nature, rather than battling it, is always the pivotal factor in achieving successful, sensible, and sustainable lawn care!

Sustainable and organic gardening go hand in hand, representing more than just passing trends, they are responsible practices that cultivate plants while preserving our environment. By embracing eco-conscious methods such as composting, natural pest control, and rejecting harmful products like synthetic polymer-coated fertilizers, we can actively reduce our negative impact on the ecosystem. So what should we think about lawn care wise this Organic September?

Keep your eye on thatch!

Are you concerned about excess thatch in your lawn? The solution lies in scarification, and there’s no better time to tackle it than September. Scarifying your lawn will give you better control over thatch levels. Furthermore, as we approach autumn and winter, we should also consider the potential issue of moss. Don’t underestimate its ability to thrive in saturated soils with reduced air space. This leads to slower water movement through the soil, keeping the surface wet for longer periods.

Thatch, a spongy material consisting of clippings, shoots, and organic matter, can exacerbate the problem by creating a moist environment for moss spores to germinate. Regular scarification provides an effective solution, promoting better water drainage and reducing the chances of moss spores taking hold. Additionally, extra aeration will be essential this autumn to maintain a healthy lawn.

Feed your lawn well and naturally, it will thank you for it!

If you are scarifying your lawn this month to control thatch, then a good balanced feed afterwards is a must!  True Grass fertilizer is crafted from recycled food waste, breaking down into essential minerals and vitamins. Packed with humic, fulvic, and amino acids, along with seaweed, mycorrhiza, and an organic wetter, it’s the sustainable, organic solution that provides all the vital elements for luscious grass and healthy soil, making it the savvy choice for conscientious lawn care!

If it keeps growing, keep mowing!

Growth should be starting to slowdown so you can begin to reduce the regularity of mowing, whilst at the same time gradually increasing the cutting height.  You can aim for 2 to 5 cuts in September.  It is most important that you check that your mower blade is sharp…the job will only be as good as the tools you use!

Sustainable lawn care promotes responsible land stewardship, educating us on the importance of long-term harmony between human cultivation and the natural world. Let’s make a positive impact on our environment, one garden at a time.

Our core mission at the Lawn Association is to make accurate lawn care information readily available via our website and through our Free Membership Scheme for gardening enthusiasts.
