Turf Tank supports Movember

Turf Tank supports Movember: Industry leading robotic line marking company, Turf Tank, teams up with Scotland-based universities to support this month’s annual moustache-starring campaign for leading men’s health charity, Movember.

Scotland-based universities, Heriot-Watt, and Strathclyde, who are existing Movember Ambassadors, both allowed Turf Tank, an autonomous line marking robot company, to paint its iconic mo across its very own sports fields.

Now in its 19th year, Movember is just days away from encouraging its Mo Bros around the UK to band together to bravely sacrifice their upper lips in support of men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

Movember’s Country Director for UK and Europe, Anne-Cecile Berthier, said: “It’s a real pleasure to have received support from Turf Tank, Herriot-Watt, and Strathclyde University this year as we’ve been able to continue to raise awareness for men’s health in a way we’ve never once done before.

“Being able to replicate our moustache on such a large scale really does help to amplify our message – men are dying too young. Support like this we admire as it helps us to spread the message far and wide, so together, we can change the face of men’s health.”

According to a recent report released by the men’s health charity, in the UK, 3 out of 4 suicides are by men. 1 in 8 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and testicular cancer continues to be the most diagnosed cancer in young men.

Movember wants to encourage men to speak up when things get tough, and the work that Turf Tank, Herriot-Watt, and Strathclyde University has allowed the charity to create will hopefully spark conversations which could ultimately save lives.

To date, Movember has welcomed six million supporters and helped fund 1,250 innovative health projects across twenty countries. But we are not done yet. To donate or learn more, please visit uk.movember.com.

TIPS TO GROW YOUR MO

  • Be prepared:  Choose the moustache that will grace your face by browsing the inspirational Movember Mo Style Guide. But embrace the moustache that nature gives you because whatever you grow will save a bro.
  • Be brave: The first few days, even weeks, can be uncomfortable as your Mo takes shape. Ride it out to encourage donations.
  • Ignore the itching: Remind yourself that men have endured worse in the past. You can stand a little face tickle.
  • Shape your moustache: Get across all the proper grooming techniques. A great Mo comes down to great grooming.
  • Nurture it and keep it clean: Look after your Mo, and your Mo will look after you.

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

  • Move for Movember- Commit to running or walking 60kms over the month. That’s 60kms for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour, every hour across the world. You can join a team or run solo.
  • Host a Mo-ment- Rally a crew and do something fun. Hosting is all about having a good time for a good cause. And you can always put a virtual spin on your plans. The best part? Virtual events are easy to organise, cheap to run and you can go in your slippers. Think an online gaming tournament, Mo Bingo, or a virtual trivia night.
  • Mo Your Own Way- A choose-your-own-adventure challenge, epic in scope and scale. You make the rules. You set the limits and chase them down. Take a hike, run a relay, ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Get creative, push your limits, and inspire donations with sheer grit.

Why do we do it again?

  • Globally, we lose one man every minute to suicide
  • Three out of four suicides in the UK are men
  • One in 8 men in the UK & Ireland will receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer in their lifetime
  • Over 333,500 men are living with or beyond prostate cancer in the UK
  • Testicular cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in young men

To date, Movember has welcomed six million supporters and helped fund 1,250 innovative health projects across twenty countries. But we are not done yet.

We’re dealing with an establishment where people are investing a lot of money sending their kids to a private school which excels in all areas of education on and off the pitch. So, I want to make sure that the pitches reflect that level of expectation. The Turf Tank robot brings a quality of perfomance and reliability that we expect.

– Lee Marshallsay, Grounds Manager, Eton College

With the traditional way of marking pitches, there was a lot of time wasted. Today we’ve marked five pitches, which would have taken our staff three-four days. With the robot, we’ve done that in an afternoon! It’s the future of line marking!

– Richard Hare, Head Groundsperson, Bromsgrove School

It wasn’t until we used the GPS machine that it highlighted the fact that when you come to mark a line freehand, they creep a bit. And then they creep a little bit more. And then they creep a little bit more, and you don’t really notice the little bit of creeping until you get a GPS line marker overmarking the pitches that were already there. You realise that they’ve moved a considerable amount of distance, and it kind of highlights that the lines were actually in the wrong place.

– Ewan Hunter, Grounds Manager, Nottingham Forest FC

Live demonstrations will take place, including the Turf Tank One’s set-up, programming and operation along with the base station. Any questions can be answered during every stage, and lunch and refreshments will be provided during the demonstration, with games and prizes also on offer.

Having already completed two dates in Belfast during May, Turf Tank UK Country Manager, Matt Murray, is looking forward to welcoming people to the roadshows in England.

“Over two days in Belfast, meeting people and showing them what the robot can do was fantastic,” Matt explains “I think the real benefit of people coming to a location similar to their own is they can see how the robot can work for them, how it can handle their conditions and ultimately, how seamless the process is.

“It’s also an excellent opportunity to ask any questions they might already have about robotic line marking, how the GPS side of things works or anything that comes up during the day.

“We like to keep it fairly informal, and everything is based outside on the turf, so it’s a solid four-hour session that people get a lot from.”

Free online registration is now open for every venue, and alex@turftank.co.uk or matt@turftank.co.uk can answer any questions regarding the events.

Turf Tank One relieves staff pressure

Turf Tank One relieves staff pressure: As far as jobs go, Eton College provides a unique challenge. As one of the most recognisable names in education with great historical significance, the school’s reputation from students to sports pitches is paramount.

Since May 2020, Eton’s 38 winter sports pitches and 1,500 acres of land spanning the M4 all the way to 2012 Olympic venue Dorney Lake have been under the control of Grounds Manager Lee Marshallsay.

Turf Tank One relieves staff pressure

His tenure has coincided with the Covid pandemic, which brought to light the number of man-hours his team spent line marking and the fact something needed to be done about it.

For context, Lee has a team of thirty. Eleven are groundsmen, with two on the college’s golf course full time and another pair dedicated to line marking. Over the summer, the line marking duo spent six to seven weeks marking out football and rugby pitches for the commencement of the school year, and in November, Lee checked his Turf Keeper records to discover his team spent over 850 hours marking.

The man-hours and pressure involved in completing this task between terms had Lee looking for alternative options. Despite being initially sceptical of a robotic line maker, he eventually turned to Turf Tank. https://turftank.com/en/

“It was also about helping the team, so they didn’t feel under pressure all the time. With the robot, where it’s taken us six or seven weeks to mark everything, we can effectively do that in a week now. Suddenly, the pressure has gone, and if we have staff on holiday or off sick, it keeps us out of trouble.

“We’ve got some projects lined up this summer that we are going to do in-house, and suddenly, that marker frees up two people, and we can put extra staff on the projects. That’s how we’ll use it as an aid and addition to the team to help plan workload and projects.”

With the Turf Tank One in place, Lee is looking to cut his marking hours by more than half. For him, this will increase pitch quality with additional aeration, cutting and finessing taking place. But choosing a robot and company that could provide everything he needed was critical.

The support from Alex and the Turf Tank team has been exemplary, with all questions answered quickly and I know that there is a full-time service engineer if I ever need hands-on assistance.”

“I think to be fair; the Turf Tank instantly ticked a lot of boxes for us. And it wasn’t just me, my team were there, and we tried other machines a week apart on the same pitch. We looked at line quality, how much paint it was putting out, how quick it was to set up, and there were similarities.

“But then we started to think about the differences. Do we want to be tied into a paint deal? Do we want an annual subscription fee? Turf Tank gave us that bit more flexibility.

“The other factor was the base station. You read a lot about the pros and cons, but to be honest as soon as I saw how it interacted with the machine, and how much more accurate the marking was, compared to those without using a base station, the whole team were like ‘it’s a no brainer, isn’t it?’ It blew us away, to be fair, and we bought the Turf Tank, and we now have base station points installed across the site, and it has worked really, really well.

“The Turf Tank records templates for initial marking and subsequent over-marking. Being able to get those templates was a significant point for us and nothing has been out of the remit of the robot. We’ve got most of the pitches loaded up now, including where the goals are actually smaller than a football goal, but we’ve managed to get the robot between the two posts and mark. Everything we’ve asked for has happened, and it has been great

“We want to teach our staff new skills and using and understanding the latest technology is very much part of Eton College’s ethos. I’m very much won-over and very impressed with the Turf Tank One line-marking robot. And if I were to move anywhere else, it is one of the first things I’d want to have in my fleet.”

After completing an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, Liam joined Reesink Turf Care as a Service Engineer and progressed to Service Technician before a three-year spell as Service Manager for East Anglia.

Liam’s technical and industry knowledge will be invaluable to Turf Tank as they continue to grow and expand their service offering in the UK market. For Liam, it is an opportunity to join a young a company where he can be a part of the process for growth and use his experience to shape the service department.

“Turf Tank is a growing company with big plans, and that is what drew me towards this job,” Liam explains. “Their team is extremely enthusiastic with ambitious ideas for the UK. They want to grow in the market and have a plan in place to achieve it. It is exciting for me to be a part of that at this stage where we can work to shape the service and support that Turf Tank offers customers going forward.

“I’ve spent considerable time in Denmark for my training, where I was introduced to the company and how the business operates. I was also shown the robot and how to use it, gaining valuable experience seeing it from a new user’s perspective. With my engineering experience I can develop an in-depth understanding of the product to ensure we can build an excellent back-up service for the UK customers.

UK Regional Sales Manager for Turf Tank, Matt Murray is delighted to have Liam on-board. “For the people using it and for those that will be using it, the Turf Tank One is a time-saving tool that they come to rely on. Expanding the services side of the team at this stage means there won’t be a drop off in back-up for our existing customers as we expand. Instead, they’ll continue getting the excellent service they have been receiving and expect.” he said.

Liam’s addition to the team signals an exciting time for the company as it continues to develop their business infrastructure in the UK and Ireland to serve a wide range of customers from professional football clubs to grassroots sports clubs, plus educational establishments, local authorities, and contractors.
