Jon Cole wins Toro’s Green Blazer Award: Jon Cole, Divisional Business Manager for Reesink Turfcare, exclusive distributor for Toro commercial machinery in the UK, has been named the recipient of the Toro Green Blazer Award for 2025.

This isn’t ordinary Toro attire, a green blazer has to be earned. The award for Toro Equipment Sales is presented during the company’s annual worldwide distributor business meeting, which is held in conjunction with the GCSAA show in America, and recognises individuals who are contributing to the industry, demonstrating leadership and showing commitment to customers and customer relationships, all with commercial success.

Greg Lawrence, General Manager of the International Division of The Toro Company, who presented the award to Jon, says: “Throughout his career, Jon has demonstrated unwavering commitment to customers, colleagues, and the Toro brand.

“He played a pivotal role in securing the landmark ten-year Total Solutions partnership with The Grove. Working closely with Toro, he helped develop a partnership proposition that extended well beyond equipment, including residual value strategies, customer engagement initiatives, education programmes, and the use of The Grove as a flagship showcase venue. These combined efforts overcame strong competition and secured long-term success.”

The Toro Green Blazer Award is presented to a member of the Toro channel who has demonstrated excellence and achievement in selling Toro commercial equipment. It is awarded just once a year and represents a high level of performance, customer impact, and outstanding accomplishment.

Spraying precision from Toro’s GeoLink: Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club in Suffolk is the latest club, and first club in East Anglia, to invest in the most advanced spraying system on the market – Toro’s GeoLink with Multi Pro 5800 sprayer.

Course Manager Martin Turna was looking for a spraying solution that would allow him and his team to apply the correct nutrients in the correct locations to improve turf health, benefit the environment and make savings.

Using GeoLink technology for its mapping capabilities, the Multi Pro 5800 from Reesink Turfcare will give Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club better control and accuracy in its spraying technique and reduce the amount of product it uses.

GeoLink will take care of accuracy, shutting off individual nozzles to prevent over spraying, essentially eliminating the risk of misalignment issues with conventional sprayers. Going forward the club will be able to track the amount and areas of product coverage, volume, pressures, speed of sprayer during and after the application.

At this nine-hole inland links course, the grass is fine fescue and the soil is free draining and sandy. We apply a monthly wetting agent to all playing surfaces to manage soil moisture and occasionally spray selective herbicides to control the weeds to produce the great turf on which to play.

Martin says: “We don’t use many chemicals, but we need wetting agents to maintain the moisture as it’s an extremely dry course. Now, there will be no over-spraying or overlap and as we will only be spraying the areas that need it, not wasting chemicals on non-targeted areas.”

Derek Kuziw, whose role on the Green Committee is to liaise with Martin and help assess the equipment needs of the club and channel the budget into the appropriate areas, says they had recognised there was a way for technology to improve the club’s spraying processes.

“We were using a tractor-mounted sprayer which didn’t give accurate control of application. The individual nozzle control of the Multi Pro means there’s less spray outside of the defined areas and the operator is no longer forced to turn on and off boom sections when spraying. The sprayer, or should I say, the technology takes over.”

The sprayer arrives in the middle of the club’s five-year development programme to turn the fairways into fast running golf. Working with The R&A, the improved spraying techniques, along with using lightweight Toro fairway mowers to help with compaction, will help improve the overall condition of the turf.

Martin says: “Over or under spraying is not good for turf health. More precise application is going to reduce the stress on the turf and improve its quality. We looked at lots of options, but Toro was technically the best answer and met our requirements exactly. Lee Rowbotham from Reesink came with his team to provide training and show us the full capabilities of the sprayer and the technology. We didn’t look anywhere else from there.

“This purchase is an investment. We’ll be spraying across the course from the greens, fairways, approaches, and from now on we will only mix up the exact amount of product we need for those areas. There will be no educated guesswork since we will know the exact areas to spray, so the savings could potentially be significant. We’ll even know how much is needed for the last partial tank to finish up.”

“The arrival of autonomous technology is what we’ve all been waiting for,” comments Jon Cole, Divisional Business Manager, Reesink Turfcare. “And Toro’s vision of this delivers professional-quality results with minimal input required, solving the problem of reduced resources, labour shortages, and rising operational costs.”

All the products launching simultaneously – the Toro GeoLink Solutions Autonomous Fairway Mower, Turf Pro range of robot mowers and Range Pro ball picker – work on Real Time Kinematic (RTK) geo-positioning technology coming from a GPS based satellite system for ultra-precise navigation.

This functionality allows for areas to be mapped, setting invisible boundaries in which the machines can operate autonomously. When they reach the edge of the predefined work zone based on satellite positioning, they intelligently keep within it.

Operation is straight-forward: wireless monitoring and control of the units is through a computer or mobile phone where it is possible to customise working perimeters, no-go zones, mowing patterns, cutting height and transport paths.

No boundary wires are required, the mowers can mow a consistent pattern with minimal overlap and are accurate to two centimetres. The system can identify missed areas and will reroute the mower to cover them later.

Jon says: “These mowers free up your greenkeeping team to focus on the essential attentive care that the tees, greens, and bunkers require, while Toro technology carefully maintains the fairways and roughs, intelligently working with minimal input.”

The Toro GeoLink Solutions Autonomous Fairway Mower is a hybrid mower. It has a Kawasaki engine but steering, traction, lift and lowering of the cylinder units are electric. The mower still has a seat and a steering wheel; this is because it has both manual and autonomous modes. In manual it’ll operate just like a normal triplex so if the operator wants to move it to a new location that isn’t mapped yet or support a different area on the course, they can.

There are three fully robotic models in the Turf Pro range. There’s the choice of three or five cutting heads providing a cutting width of 63.3cm (25ins) in the Turf Pro 300 and 103.3cm (40.7ins) for the Turf Pro 500. They can mow up to 18.5 acres (75,000m2) and there’s a model for use on slopes of up to 24 degrees.

They are all-electric, self-charging and automatically return to the charging station. And through increased mowing frequency these mowers can purposefully remove less leaf tissue, producing shorter clippings and with adjustable mowing patterns can be utilised to achieve multiple aesthetics.

Jon concludes: “Toro developed this technology and these products in direct response to customer feedback and research. It was clear there was a changing mindset about what was needed regarding labour support, combatting increasing operational costs and how to approach mowing grass. This productive solution eases labour resource pains and provides operational cost savings with no change in Toro’s world-renowned cutting performance.”
