Tubex Expands UK’s Largest Tree Shelter Collection

Tubex Expands UK’s Largest Tree Shelter Collection: Tubex is kicking off 2025 with a major expansion of its tree shelter Collection and Recycling Programme, making it easier than ever for landowners and tree planters to recycle used shelters responsibly.

With 1.1 million tree shelters recycled to date, the UK’s first dedicated scheme of its kind is growing once again, with the addition of more locations and partners committed to sustainable forestry practices.

Tubex has built on the scheme’s success in 2024 by working closely with more partners and distributors to expand the network for 2025, with new collection points, including West Chevington, RSK Whittington and Alba Trees Ltd, joining the list.

These new locations accompany Tubex’s existing partners such as Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust, Tilhill, Maydencroft, Green-tech and others, helping to grow the hub network to over 25 sites across the UK. This year’s expansion ensures even greater accessibility for landowners and tree planters looking to dispose of used shelters responsibly, either by dropping them off at a hub for free or by booking doorstep collection for a small fee.

The Tubex Tree Shelter Collection and Recycling Programme accepts used polypropylene or polyethylene tree shelters or mesh tubes from all manufacturers. All materials collected are recycled into new shelters, reinforcing Tubex’s ongoing commitment to a circular economy where materials are reused, and waste is minimised. As confirmed by independent research, collection and recycling represent the lowest impact option when tree shelters are used*, making this the most responsible avenue for landowners.

Pete Stevens, Business Development Manager at Tubex, said: “The growth of our Collection and Recycling Programme shows what can be achieved through strong collaboration and shared sustainability values. Our goal has always been to make it easier for landowners to ensure shelters aren’t left in the environment, and the expanded hub network means more people than ever can do the right thing.”

“We are proud of the community of stakeholders who have helped make this programme what it is today,” added Pete. “By working together, we are driving real progress in how the industry approaches tree shelter use and disposal, and we look forward to continuing that journey this year.”

FSI B21 a great fit for JB Tree Services

FSI B21 a great fit for JB Tree Services: An FSI B21 stump grinder is proving that compact certainly does not mean a compromise in efficiency and performance for Joe Baker of JB Tree Services.

With the majority of jobs coming from residential customers in and around Trowbridge, his recently  purchased FSI B21 gives him the manoeuvrability to tackle stumps in tight and restricted spaces as well as providing full control over his work schedule compared to the trepidation of relying on hire machines.

After working as a tree surgeon for Bath Council for six years, Joe started working for himself full-time in 2021. Commercial and council work for Trowbridge Town Council remains a key part of his offering, but he explains that the majority of demand for him and his team of two comes from residential customers. “These sorts of customers are looking for a ‘one stop shop’ – if they’re having a tree removed, they also want the stump dealt with on the same day.”

“I started off hiring a stump grinder as and when I needed one, but found they’d turn up used and abused, nearly always blunt. The time was definitely right to invest in our own machine that would be well maintained and available whenever we needed it.” While no stranger to stump grinders, Joe had no prior experience of an FSI, but admits it took little convincing that the brand was the perfect solution! “We had the slightly bigger FSI B31 on demonstration from GA Groundcare Ltd and the first thing we noticed was the outstanding build quality. The whole team had the opportunity to use it and all agreed that of all the various makes and models they’d used, in operation, this was by far the best.”

Peace of mind

Decision made, the pedestrian FSI B21 stump grinder joined the machinery fleet in August 2024. “There’s a lot to like about this machine, with a lot of features bringing newfound efficiency to stump removal.” He explains, “Firstly, the 14hp engine delivers impressive power. The turntable feature is brilliant in terms of operator comfort, the safety bar allows us to disengage the cutter wheel for safe and unhindered movement around the stump. The hill-hold system which is unique to FSI is another gamechanger – blocking any forward wheel motion and allowing us to pull the machine backwards to easily navigate ramps, steps and uneven terrain.”

“The peace of mind of being able to fell a tree in the morning and having the FSI B21 to hand to grind the stump in the afternoon is brilliant, seeing the machine in high demand since we’ve had it. The back-up from GA Groundcare has also been excellent. We can’t fault the machine or the service we’ve had from start to finish.”

Tree Hugger®: A Sustainable Solution for Tree Protection

Tree Hugger®: A Sustainable Solution for Tree Protection: As we enter National Tree Week, there’s no better time to highlight the importance of sustainable tree care. Trees are vital to our environment, but their early years require protection from animals, harsh weather, and competing vegetation. While traditional plastic guards have long been the go-to solution, they come with significant environmental and logistical downsides.

Enter Tree Hugger®, exclusively available from Agrovista Amenity, the eco-friendly, biodegradable alternative that’s set to revolutionise how we safeguard young trees.

Tree Hugger®: A Sustainable Solution for Tree Protection

Tree Hugger®: A Sustainable Solution for Tree Protection

Why Not Plastic?

Plastic tree guards, typically made from non-biodegradable petrochemicals, pose numerous problems such as:

  • Environmental Impact: Traditional guards break down into microplastics, contributing to pollution and bioaccumulation in ecosystems.
  • Animal Safety: Broken plastic fragments can harm small animals.
  • Aesthetic Issues: As trees outgrow their shelters, abandoned plastic guards create unsightly litter.
  • Removal Burden: Retrieving plastic guards is costly and labour-intensive, with recycling options often limited and expensive.
  • Tree Health: Plastic guards can sometimes trap excessive heat and promote weed growth, both of which can hinder healthy tree development.

The True Cost of Plastic

Beyond environmental concerns, plastic guards come with hidden costs. Recycling programmes, while helpful, often have stringent requirements and fees. Labour and transportation costs for removal can range from £1 to £1.50 per guard—excluding VAT—and escalate further for guards located in challenging areas such as roadsides or railway embankments.

Tree Hugger®: The natural choice

Available exclusively through Agrovista Amenity, Tree Hugger® guards provide a much-needed solution. These innovative products are made from biodegradable materials, including loomstate organic cotton and pine rosin from FSC-certified Scandinavian forests. Designed to last a minimum of five years, they protect young trees without the need for collection or recycling.

Key Benefits of Tree Hugger® Products:

  • Plastic-e: Completely biodegradable, eliminating microplastic pollution.
  • Encourages Growth: The unique visible light spectrum within the guards promotes tree development.
  • Durable: A lifespan of at least five years ensures long-term protection.
  • Animal Protection: Guards are strong enough to resist prying animals, including voles.
  • Ease of Use: No removal or recycling logistics, saving time and costs.
  • Sustainable Design: Made from organic and recycled materials, meeting international sustainability standards (ISCC PLUS certification).

Product Range

Tree Guards: Available in various sizes (0.6m–1.8m heights and 70–110mm diameters), these guards protect trees during their critical establishment period.

Vole Guards: With diameters of 45–50mm, these guards shield young trees from vole damage by forming a barrier at the soil level.

Shrub Shelters: Designed for shrubs and trees with larger diameters, these shelters improve survival rates and are secured with stakes.

Hedge Wraps: Quick-to-install wraps that protect hedges, vines, and trees during early growth, supported by bamboo canes.

A Greener Future with Tree Hugger®

For every 8,000 trees planted with Tree Hugger® guards, approximately 700kg of plastic is avoided—equivalent to saving 35,000 single-use 330ml plastic bottles. By choosing biodegradable solutions, farmers, landowners, and local authorities can significantly reduce their environmental footprint while ensuring robust tree protection.

By offering Tree Hugger® guards, Agrovista Amenity reinforces its dedication to reducing environmental impact while delivering practical, high-performance products.

This National Tree Week, make the sustainable choice. With Agrovista Amenity and Tree Hugger®, you’re not just protecting trees—you’re protecting the planet.

Avant Compact Loader Revolutionises Tree Peaks Operations

Avant Compact Loader Revolutionises Tree Peaks Operations: Founded five years ago, Tree Peaks has built a reputation for delivering quality tree surgeon services across Lancashire, the Yorkshire Dales, the Forest of Bowland, and the Lake District.

Specialising in domestic tree work and log processing, Tree Peaks found itself facing increasing demand for its firewood business. To meet this demand and to streamline operations, owner Bertie Pighills turned to Avant compact loaders.

“We first started with a different loader, but that wasn’t really doing the job,” Bertie recalls. “So, we went onto having an Avant, and it’s just been brilliant. It has changed the business, I would say.”

Investing in the Avant 635, Tree Peaks gained access to a powerful and efficient machine perfectly suited for professional use. With a lifting capacity of 2.8 meters and a telescopic boom, the Avant 635 proved to be a game-changer.

Equipped with a range of attachments, including buckets, forks, and a hydro rotation timber grab, the Avant 635 enabled Tree Peaks to diversify its services and handle a variety of tasks with ease.

The versatility of the Avant, combined with its manoeuvrability in tight spaces, impressed Bertie and his team.

“The Avant is just perfect,” continues Bertie. “The pivot steer is excellent for moving around the greenhouse and other tight access jobs. It is so quick and easy to change attachments too.

“For me, the weight and the size of it, and the amount it can lift, is a big factor. We can quite easily put it on a trailer and take it to a different place every time. Everything is great about the 635.”

Working closely with Rob Atkinson and the team from APSV, the main dealers for Avant compact loaders in North Yorkshire, Co. Durham, and Northumberland, Tree Peaks experience continuous support and service, further enhancing their Avant experience.

“I highly recommend both the Avant loader and APSV,” Bertie concludes. “Both work incredibly well for me.”

With the Avant compact loader at their disposal, Tree Peaks has streamlined operations, expanded their services, and elevated their business to new heights.

Green-tech supplies tree planting materials

Green-tech supplies tree planting materials: Lushill Farm stands in picturesque North Wiltshire as an arable farm with limited tree cover. This has been the focus of a significant afforestation effort led by Jonathan Ayers of Ayers Forestry Limited.

The project was to establish small well-designed woodland blocks to enhance the local landscape amenity, to aid biodiversity recovery, and to improve shoot and timber production. This was an ambitious tree-planting project undertaken by woodland management and consultancy firm, Ayers Forestry Limited, to create a new woodland that will provide diversity of habitat as part of a move towards more biodiverse and ecologically rich farmland.

Project Details

A diverse species mix of native and non-native broadleaves and conifers were planted to improve forest resilience to pests, diseases, and climate change. Despite the challenges posed by heavy winter rains that temporarily flooded several planting sites, the project progressed as planned, with all planting completed before spring.

Ayers Forestry Limited turned to leading landscape supplier Green-tech to source the materials they needed to support and protect a total of 22,950 trees, which included:

  • Broadleaves: 14,700 in 1.5m Tubex tree shelters with 32mm stakes
  • Conifers: 8,100 in 1.5m fine mesh guards with 32mm stakes
  • Shrubs: 150 in 60cm shrub shelters with 90cm stakes

Tubex standard tree shelters are designed to protect young trees from wildlife while creating a microclimate that promotes healthy growth. The use of the 1.5m high option was necessitated by the presence of fallow deer in the area to ensure that the young trees are protected from browsing.

Paired with the Tubex tree shelters, the 32mm Softwood Stakes provide the necessary support for the young trees, whilst the 90cm Softwood Stakes provide support for the shrubs. The 1.5m Fine Mesh Guards were used for the conifers to protect them from deer while allowing for adequate airflow.

Outcome and Feedback

Jonathan Ayers of Ayers Forestry Limited expressed satisfaction with the collaboration and the products supplied by Green-tech. “Initial signs indicate a high survival rate of the planted trees, reflecting the success of the project. We are very happy with the service and products provided by Green-tech; they were helpful and efficient.”

The Lushill Farm woodland project exemplifies a successful partnership between Ayers Forestry Limited and Green-tech, showcasing the impact of quality materials and how to achieve ecological and economic goals in rural tree planting projects. The diverse species mix and protective measures implemented promise a resilient and thriving woodland that will benefit the environment and the local community for years to come.
