DSV’s Trial Triumph at Monmouthshire

DSV’s Trial Triumph at Monmouthshire: Mark Simmons, Course Manager at Monmouthshire Golf Club in Abergavenny, embarked on a journey of trial and evaluation to find the perfect grass seed for the club’s greens. After extensive experimentation, Mark concluded that DSV’s PRO Bent grass seed was the optimal solution.

DSV’s PRO Bent is emerging as a game-changer in turf management, boasting remarkable density, drought tolerance, and adaptability for close mowing. Comprised solely of high-quality Browntop bent, PRO Bent from the DSV EuroGrass range is tailor-made for summer/autumn overseeding and species exchange operations, aligning perfectly with Monmouthshire’s vision for superior greens.

EuroGrass, the pinnacle of over a decade of breeding and testing, stands as a testament to DSV’s commitment to excellence in turf grass quality. With a diverse portfolio of over 90 approved turf varieties worldwide, EuroGrass offers tailored solutions for professional use across various sporting landscapes, solidifying its position as an industry frontrunner in turf innovation.

Mark’s meticulous approach to seed selection involved a series of rigorous trials conducted over several months. Armed with soil samples and a passion for perfection, Mark evaluated seven seed varieties from different manufacturers, subjecting them to various conditions to assess their performance. “I didn’t want to just do the trial with some sand and a pot,” Mark explains. “I wanted to do it specifically for my site.”

“I took the soils from my greens, put them in pots, and used all the different seeds to see which ones germinated and established the best,” Mark elaborates. “Once they established, I regularly trimmed the grass in the pots to simulate them being cut at 4mm; I over-watered them to see how they would cope with too much rain; I dried them out to see how they would deal with drought; I even put some disease on them and sprayed various treatments to see how each seed responded to treatments.”

“Once the trial had finished, I carried out the trial again just to make sure. On both occasions, the results showed that DSV PRO Bent was the best seed for my greens.”

Reflecting on the process, Mark emphasises the importance of thorough research in turf management. “Choosing the correct seed is not just about investing money—it’s about investing in the future of the course,” he says. “With seed, it could be great at one course but might not be as effective at another. This is why data and trial work are crucial.”

“The sward density of the DSV PRO Bent seed was a standout feature for me,” Mark notes. “I wanted a dense sward, and the DSV seed delivered. If it was thin, then it simply wasn’t going to last.”

Mark purchased the DSV seed from Rhys Norville at ReGen Amenity, someone who he claims has become a key partner in providing invaluable products, support, and expertise. “Rhys is not a pushy salesman,” Mark praises. “I work closely with him on a variety of products which are all tailored to what I like. We do a lot of data collection together as well. He even helped me drag mat my greens recently – and you can’t ask for much more than that!”

Mark’s commitment to finding the perfect seed highlights the importance of thorough research in selecting compatible products for golf course maintenance. With PRO Bent from DSV’s EuroGrass range now enhancing Monmouthshire’s greens, the club is set to reap the rewards of Mark’s meticulous selection process.

Many grounds contractors, landscapers and arborists are already reaping the rewards of the improvements to their working environment by fuelling their petrol-engined equipment with Aspen Fuel. Recommended by LANTRA, the cleaner burn of Aspen all-but eliminates the noxious fumes and infamous ‘blue haze’ traditionally experienced with unleaded fuel from the pump, not only improving the health and well-being of the operator but also those in the immediate environment.

Visitors to outside stand 350 can find out more about the ‘Experience the Difference’ trial, which enables businesses to use the 2 and 4-stroke fuel risk-free in their own working environments and return the unused fuel if they change their mind for a refund of the cost difference.

“We understand that concerns around cost or logistics can sometimes delay the decision to give Aspen a try, however, once they do, we find companies rarely look back” explains Axel Hildebrand, Business Development Manager for Aspen Fuel. “We want to give all business owners at GroundsFest the opportunity to discover the difference that this fuel can make to their operation, their machinery and their workers welfare and we can do that with the assurance that the customer won’t incur any increase in their fuel costs for the duration of the trial.”

Top-Brush trial becomes working wonder

Top-Brush trial becomes working wonder: All but eliminating the issue of worm cast removal, the team at Worplesdon Golf Club have been delighted with the performance of their Redexim Top-Brush.

The effectiveness of the 6m wide brush came as no surprise though to Course Manager Paul Robinson, who had been involved with the development of the proto-type model – helping to create the perfect solution for course brushing, dew removal and presentation.

Worplesdon’s 18-hole course is located in the classic heathland belt of Surrey and is consistently ranked in Golf Monthly’s UK&I Top 100. The loamy, sandy fairways played a part in Paul’s interest in the development of the Top-Brush. “Having lost chemical treatments, mechanical means of removal are going to become pivotal in maintenance programmes moving forward” he explains. “We were delighted to be one of the first to trial the prototype and provided Redexim with in-field feedback to help shape the final model.”

Three years after its first arrival, a fully-developed Top-Brush has now completed its first year on course. “There’s no universal solution for every course, but we used the Top-Brush to incorporate sand during dry conditions and found that this then made any casts that did occur dusty and easy to disperse. It has given us a quick, effective answer to one of the major greenkeeper challenges.”

With a 6m working width and option to have the brushes contra-rotating to the direction of travel, the Top-Brush has found more than one use for Paul and his team of eight. “It’s not a one-trick pony. We’ve used it for removing dew which has played a big role in improving plant health, but also we’ve found it leaves a fantastic finish which has meant we can sometimes reduce the amount of fairway mowing that takes place – saving both fuel and man-hours.”

Paul adds, “With a lot of greenkeeping tasks time is really of the essence, so larger, more efficient machinery is the future for ensuring we can still achieve the perfect finish but in the most effective and sustainable ways. The whole Top-Brush project has been great to be involved with and the result is something which is truly fit-for-purpose.”

Woodchippers Bought After Trial

Woodchippers Bought After Trial: Beechwood Trees and Landscapes Ltd has purchased three new Först Woodchippers, after a successful trial that saw the team of arboriculture experts thoroughly impressed with the high level of performance and robust nature of the machines.

Established in 1998, Beechwood is one of the country’s leading arboricultural, fencing and landscaping contractors, and is continuing to show sustainable growth and development. With a team of 30 staff members, the success of the business over the past 20 years has been vast and the company is now recognised as one of the most forward thinking, innovative businesses within the industry.

Woodchippers Bought After Trial

Simon Rotheram, who has been managing director of Beechwood since the company’s inception, explains why he chose to work closely with Först after using woodchippers for more than two decades.

He said: “The majority of our work consists of site clearances and sectional take downs with housing associations and local councils, so it’s vitally important that we utilise a woodchipper fleet that can tackle any job, whilst also keeping maintenance and service to a minimum. In our industry, time literally is money, so we can’t afford any machinery downtime or lack of performance.

“To make sure we maintain our high standards, we carry out a rigorous maintenance programme that sees us review all of our machinery fleet every 3-4 years to ensure we are utilising the best and latest equipment. Over the past 20 years we have generally stuck to what we know when it comes to woodchippers, but on this occasion Först kindly agreed to lend us an ST6 and ST8 machine for a week and we were curious to see how they matched up against our current fleet.

“We put both woodchippers straight to work and the feedback I received from my team of operators out in the field was great. In addition to the impressive productivity of the machines, the woodchippers are also light and mobile, which makes transportation and completion of jobs in difficult to reach locations very simple.

“Outside the operation of the woodchippers, the Först machines also come with a three year warranty, which is a great asset to our business as these woodchippers really are put through their paces. In addition, our local Först service partner is just down the road to cover any minor mishaps, so the service and aftersales care Först can offer is second to none. When you combine all of this, the decision to move across to Först really was a no brainer and we purchased three ST6 machines as soon as we could.”

With the investment in Först woodchippers made, Simon can only see the working relationship with the manufacturer growing stronger moving forward.

Simon concluded: “We are very excited about working with Först. Although it’s still early days, the service support we have received from the manufacturer in such a short period of time, as well as the performance of the woodchippers, is something I have been really impressed with and this enables the team and I to simply focus on the job at hand.”
