Trilo C12 delivers for Walsall Council

Trilo C12 delivers for Walsall Council: With a decision made to reduce grass cutting on around 75 sites across the borough, came the necessity to purchase a more durable and efficient cut and collect set-up for the team at Walsall Council.

The solution – a high-capacity C12 unit from Trilo. Delivered in the autumn of 2024, the Trilo was swiftly put to task, making light work of the mowing and clean collection of wildflower areas and other green spaces, all while reducing labour and fuel requirements too!

Andrew Stokes, Principle Operations Manager for Walsall Council, has been with the local authority for the last 17 years and currently oversees the team responsible for all elements of grounds management and street cleansing. He explains the changes to the cutting schedule which drove the purchase. “We previously had around 4 sites which would only be cut once a year, for the benefit of supporting pollinators and wildlife more generally. As part of a larger 10-year ‘managing grass’ plan, this was increased to 75 for the 2024 season. While this brings many benefits, it posed a challenge for our equipment which only had limited capacity.”

Working closely with supporting dealers F R Sharrock, Andrew and the team looked at the Trilo C12, with its robust steel fabrication and heavy-duty flail head designed to cope with the most demanding cut and collect tasks. Boasting noise reduction, dust suppression and a 12m3 hydraulically controlled hopper, the C12 was the right choice to deliver both the quality and quantity of mowing the council were looking for.

“We’ve gone from using a machine which could only collect 1m3 which, when you factor in the need to empty and transport the waste, meant the whole task would take two or three people. With the introduction of the Trilo the task can now be completed by one person all from the tractor cab. Not only is that reducing the reliance on resources, it’s minimising the number of trips required to dispose of the cuttings thereby freeing up equipment and lowering our fuel usage.” He continues, “We are working with ever tightening budgets so being able to reassign our workforce and benefit the environment at the same time is the kind of efficiencies we really need.”

“The feedback from the operators has been nothing but positive” he adds. “The C12 proved to be a workhorse right through the tail end of the year and, moving forwards, will only continue to play a greater role and allow us the potential to add more areas to the programme.” The Trilo is also equipped with a handheld hose and brush attachment, allowing it to also be used for leaf collection. “The idea is we’ll be able to complete all of our cut and collect work before the leaves start to fall, then change the C12 to bring greater productivity and efficiency to this side of our operation.”

Trilo to showcase versatile vacuum sweepers at SALTEX: Trilo return to SALTEX 2024, promising to showcase the very best in versatile vacuum sweepers on stand K058.

Long regarded as the industry-leader in leaf and debris collectors, the Trilo range spans models from 3-30m3 to suit a range of environments from roadside verges to sports turf, golf courses to green spaces. Powerful suction combined with clever, modular construction makes for effortless removal of leaves, pine needles, clippings and other debris, making light work of the most time-consuming tasks of the autumn and winter months. The unique configuration of the Trilo vacuums provides the option of a cab-controlled hose or handheld wanderhose, bringing further efficiencies to the clearance of ditches, gulleys and other hard to reach spaces.

When leaf fall season is complete, and other vacuum sweepers are resigned to the sidelines, the Trilo Multipurpose works on. A range of attachments are available for effective scarification or convenient cut and collect, all of which can be swapped in and out in under an hour, with minimal tools, for less time in the workshop and more time in the field.

The Trilo scarifier shaft is available with a range of knife options, to suit the scarification of large areas such as fairways or public parks, with the extracted material collected into the high-capacity hopper in the same pass. Alternatively, a flail shaft can be fitted for the efficient cut and collection of golf roughs, highway verges or the annual maintenance of wildflower meadows.

Whether it’s leaves, organic matter or clippings, all waste can be easily emptied thanks to the Trilo hydraulic high-tip function, offering the controlled disposal into compost or waste containers.

More information on the Trilo range, together with other offerings from Trilo such as the Progressive portfolio of trailed and mounted rotary mowers, can be found by speaking to the technical team on stand K058 across the two days.

Trilo M3 cleans up at Ombersley GC

Trilo M3 cleans up at Ombersley GC: Over the 35 years that Andrew Halfpenny has been Course Manager at Ombersley Golf Club, things have changed dramatically – including the site itself, where the 18 hole parkland course has matured, creating an ever-increasing problem with leaf-fall.

With mulching no longer providing a viable solution, the team took delivery of a Trilo M3 vacuum collector in October 2023, which has proved more than capable of keeping the course clean and tidy over a busy autumn and winter season.

Andrew has clocked up an impressive 47 years with the company, and currently leads the maintenance of the Worcestershire course supported by a team of five. “Leaves weren’t really too much of a problem traditionally, but as the course has matured, mulching them with a mower became unfeasible time-wise and playability-wise for the golfers” he explains. “We’ve established a fantastic relationship over the years with Tallis Amos Group so approached them to see what they could recommend to collect the leaves. They brought us the Trilo M3, we gave it a thorough test and we bought it – simple as that!”

The M3 Multipurpose from Trilo is capable of a range of operations including scarification, cut and collection and debris clearance depending on the attachment equipped. The 1.5m working width and 3m3 hopper capacity makes it compact yet capable of year-round maintenance tasks in a variety of golf and sports turf applications.

“It was delivered in October and was out on a weekly basis. It coped brilliantly with both the volume of leaves we had and the very wet ground. The wanderhose is a brilliant feature, great for manoeuvring around hedgerows and clearing leaves and other litter around perimeter and fence lines. We used the vacuum in conjunction with our blower, quickly removing everything we wanted to and leaving a really clean finish.” Andrew continues, “The players noticed the difference and loved it!”

While the M3 was predominately purchased for leaf clearance Andrew foresees that, with the climatic changes he has observed during his tenure, it will find other uses. “We see more rain, and notably more wind, which blows litter and tree-debris around the course. The M3 is our new go-to machine for keeping the course tidy.”

Trilo M3 delivers large fuel and labour savings

Trilo M3 delivers large fuel and labour savings: An M3 Multipurpose from Trilo has become a valuable extra member of the team at Knaresborough Golf Club, following an extensive search for a more time-friendly solution to the task of leaf clearance.

Purchased in May 2023 with both a flail rotor and brush, not only has the M3 delivered versatility for tasks around the course and throughout the maintenance calendar, its large capacity and high-productivity have also resulted in large fuel and labour savings.

Knaresborough Golf Club in North Yorkshire is a picturesque parkland course, maintained by Head Greenkeeper Neil Jarrett and a team of four. “Ideally we’d be operating with a team of six especially as we go into Autumn, with leaf-fall from our heavily tree-lined fairways only further exacerbating an already busy maintenance schedule” Neil explains. With a flail collector too ‘cumbersome’ to get onto the course, and a combination of blowers and rotary mowers proving too time-consuming, a more effective solution to this problem was needed.

“Gareth, my Deputy, organised a couple of demonstrations and we had a really good look at what was out there. When we saw the Trilo M3 machine, it became a clear decision. The portability and multi-functionality this displayed really impressed the club manager and all of the team – it was head and shoulders above the competition for us.”

The Trilo M3 Multipurpose is a 3-in-1 machine that, with a range of optional attachments, can facilitate a range of operations including scarification, cut and collect and debris clearance. A working width of 1.5m makes the unit both compact and manoeuvrable, while the hopper capacity of 3m3 and hand-held suction hose makes vacuuming of materials from large or hard-to-reach areas a breeze.

“The wanderhose has transformed how we clean and clear clippings and leaves, particularly around the clubhouse and the dykes we have on the course. Tasks that would have previously involved three people, two rotary mowers to mulch the leaves, a blower and hand-rake can now all be cleared in a matter of minutes by one person.” He continues, “Using one machine with a hopper the size of the one on the M3 also means we’re making less trips to empty, reducing fuel, saving money and moving towards being more sustainable which is something we’re actively trying to address as a club.”

Together with the brush which makes for effective sweeping and clearance of turf areas and hard ground such as the club car park, Knaresborough also purchased a flail rotor attachment enabling them to utilise the M3 for one-pass cut and collect. “Over the summer we’ve been using the M3 to cut back and thin out our long rough and it’s been brilliant! This will be an ongoing project over the next few years as we try to maintain a ‘wispier’ rough, which looks more attractive as well as making the areas easier to play.”

Neil concludes, “The M3 has really delivered and we’ve yet to find anything it can’t do! The service and advice we’ve had from our local dealer F G Adamsons (RFS Ltd) and James Boyle of Vanmac Trilo has also been very good. As we move forward and explore its full capabilities, we know we will be well looked after.”
