Trilo transforms the task of cut and collect

Trilo transforms the task of cut and collect: Following BCP Council’s declaration of a climate and ecology emergency in 2019, the decision was made to review the management of some green spaces across the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole areas.

With a subsequent reduction in the cutting of some verges and open land, a Trilo S20 with its large 20m3 hopper capacity was brought in to increase productivity as the cut and collect operation expanded – taking not just large quantities of meadow grass in its stride but also assisting with leaf clearance during the winter months.

The versatile Trilo S20 was purchased in May 2022 by Simon Woodall, Team Operations Manager for BCP Council and spearhead of a 30-strong team responsible for looking after all aspects of parks and housing grounds maintenance and landscape construction. “Our ecology programme included creating more grass meadows by leaving areas uncut to improve carbon sequestration and increase our biodiversity to support pollinators. We also reduced cutting on other green spaces such as verges to give plants a chance to flower, providing a valuable source of nectar and adding interest and colour to amenity areas” he explains.

“With this change to our cutting operation, we needed a machine that could handle large-scale cut and collect and found the Trilo was a perfect addition to our existing fleet of mountable cut and collect machines.” The S20 is the largest capacity model in Trilo’s multi-purpose S-Line range which, when fitted with a flail shaft, offers a cutting width of 2.1m and powerful vacuum collection of the clippings to leave a clean finish after every pass.

Following the delivery by Hunt Forest Group, the S20 was put straight into operation between August and October. “The size of this unit has transformed the task of maintaining our meadow areas” Simon explains. “Not only does it cut and collect in its own right, but we can use it to support the smaller tractor mounted and ride on machines which can cut in tighter areas then tip their arisings on the ground to be sucked up by the hose on the S20 – all done using the intuitive control box from the comfort of the cab. This in itself has increased productivity and reduced vehicle journeys to dispose of waste.”

“Through December and January we then used the S20 to assist with leaf collection within the larger parks in our area, and will certainly be using it more for this function in future.” He concludes, “With Trilo you’re also assured of excellent build quality and excellent service from specification right through to installation. It’s the full package and has already proven itself to be a fantastic investment.”

Trilo offering the scarification solutions

Trilo offering the scarification solutions: The start of spring growth signals the safe return for some of the most critical mechanical maintenance operations – which can bring a significant boost to plant health.

Effective scarification can encourage healthy growth, tackle weed ingress and create an environment less favourable to fungal activity. Among the range of scarification tools from Trilo are solutions for both fine turf and sports turf applications which, when combined with effective husbandy, can have not just environmental benefits but financial savings too!

For flat surfaces, the Trilo VCU range offers effective scarification down to depths of 40mm. Available in 1.5m or 2m working widths, PTO drive provides reliable power to the rotor – equipped with 3mm thick manganese steel knives, capable of cutting through thatch layers and opening the surface up for more effective overseeding and better penetration for moisture and nutrients. The robust design delivers rigid strength, while the working depth of the VCU150 and VCU200 is simple to adjust via the threaded spindle, accessible on the sides of the unit. An optional undulation kit, comprising of gauge wheels, can be fitted to the rear of the frame for improved results on uneven ground.

Working up through the range and offering verti-cutting and collection in a single pass, is the 1.5m Trilo C15. Ideal for sports fields and local authority applications, the C15 offers a compact and versatile solution for scarification, utilising 3mm thick blades and wind paddles to effectively remove large quantities of thatch up and into the 1m3 hopper. Emptied easily via hydraulic lift and tip, the hopper also features a dust cover which makes for a more pleasant operator experience when working in dry conditions. The knives can be quickly accessed for simple cleaning, maintenance or changing for twisted flail blades, converting the C15 into a cut and collect machine.

Moving up again and proving that multi-function doesn’t have to mean compromise is the Trilo M4 vacuum collector which, when fitted with scarifier shaft, allows for effective scarification on large areas such as parks and fairways. When not in use for leaf collection through the autumn and winter, consider equipping the M4 with one of Trilo’s many scarification blade options for quick, single-person, thatch removal and clean collection via its large 4m3 hopper. The scarifier shaft can then be easily swapped again, for a flail shaft – delivering quick and convenient cut and collection throughout the summer months.

Trilo S4 and BL960 prove the perfect pair

Trilo S4 and BL960 prove the perfect pair: A Trilo S4 is proving that multi-functional machinery doesn’t have to mean compromised performance for the team at Calcot Park Golf Club.

Assisting Course Manager Tom Jennings with various maintenance tasks including scarification and cut and collect of the sites biodiversity areas, the S4 is currently tasked with keeping on top of leaf collection with assistance from their new Trilo BL960.

The undulating 18-hole parkland course designed by Harry Colt resides within an exclusive private estate in Berkshire, providing the picture-perfect backdrop for players of all abilities. Pre-empting the amount of time and resources that would be required to keep on top of leaf clearance, an S4 was one of the first investments Tom made when he joined Calcot Park four years ago. “With such a huge number of trees, investing in equipment to collect leaves as quickly and efficiently as possible was a priority. As soon as we saw the Trilo S4 it was a no brainer.”

“We purchased the whole package, including flail and scarifier heads which converts the machine into one we can use year-round. The board don’t want to spend money on a machine that spends most of the year sat in the shed, or that doesn’t do a good job of what it is supposed to do – the S4 ticks all of the boxes.” Over the year, the team are utilising the S4 for cutting the eco grass areas and scarifying the roughs, along with vacuuming scarified material and other debris from the fairways. “With all the attachments, its versatile, but conducts every operation really well.”

“In the autumn, the amount of labour this machine saves us is brilliant. Where before the team would have to get into ditches and clear leaves manually, now we can use the S4’s wander hose to suck up the leaves in a matter of minutes.” To complement the S4, the club have recently purchased a BL960 blower from Trilo, delivered by local dealer Lister Wilder. “The blower we had on our fleet ran on unleaded and with fuel costs going up, we worked out it was costing us £50 per day to run. I had used a BL960 at my previous club and it’s bulletproof so bearing this in mind, along with the savings we could make by running it straight off the PTO shaft and tractor, it was an easy decision.”

The BL960 arrived in September 2022, just in-time for a busy autumn and winter season. “This blower is so powerful – it moves material quicker and leaves a much cleaner finish than our previous machine. To clear the fairways previously would have taken ten passes or more… with the BL960 the job is complete in two so not only are we getting better results, it takes fewer resources and is done in less time. I, the team and the club couldn’t be happier with our investment.”

No stranger to the groundcare sector, Christiaan joins Vanmac after more than 20 years at the Royal Barenbrug Group where, amongst other positions, he was working as Head of Marketing and Sales for the last eight years. Since August 2022, he has sat alongside Leo van Loen and Peter van Mispelaar on the board of Vanmac to drive the further expansion and optimisation of activities across the group. Commenting on his appointment, Christiaan said “I am delighted to now be a part of a strong team, who are passionate about what they produce, and all share the serious ambition of growing the company further. I look forward to meeting customers old and new at SALTEX this November.”

Trilo S12’s transform conservation cut & collect

Trilo S12’s transform conservation cut & collect: The cut and collect of conservation areas and wild flower habitats is proving no problem now for R J Jochimsen Contractors Ltd, thanks to a brace of Trilo S12’s from Vanmac.

After purchasing his first S12 unit in May 2020, a big increase in enquiries for large area, sustainable land management saw MD Rob Jochimsen add a second to his fleet in September 2021 – the pair delivering the perfect combination of capacity, efficiency and adaptability.

Based in the South of England, the team undertake all manner of maintenance tasks for customers including airports, private estates and local authorities which is where, Rob cites, there’s been a major increase in environmental and conservation areas. “These conservation areas tend to only be cut once a year, meaning you often have very large quantities of grass and materials to process” he explains. With that in mind, Rob sought a larger machine to replace a small-capacity unit they were previously using and opted for the S12 vacuum collector from Trilo.

“This was delivered in May 2020 and straight away transformed how we approached the task of large-scale cut and collect. Fitted with the flail head, we could accurately and effectively cover the hectarage and collect it all in the 12m3 hopper – reducing the time spent travelling backwards and forwards to empty.” So impressed with the range and productivity, Rob purchased a second unit less than 18 months later. “The two machines will now often work in tandem, getting the task at hand completed efficiently, quickly and to the satisfaction of both the customer and my team.”

“Along with the flail head, we also have the brush attachment and wander hose meaning we have the flexibility to use the S12’s for leaf clearance or sweeping in parks or on football pitches. Swapping between these attachments takes less than an hour, and all of the ongoing regular maintenance is also nice and simple.”

The S12 now forms part of the large, multi-purpose M-Series of vacuum sweepers from Trilo. Offering hopper capacities of up to 20m3, the M-Series is designed with high volume and year-round versatility in mind – giving the operator the ability to conduct leaf clearance, verti-cutting, mowing and collection all with one machine.
