Floors Castle turn to Foamstream

Floors Castle turn to Foamstream: A Foamstream L12 system is delivering effective non-herbicidal weed control and labour savings too, for the team at Floors Castle.

Tasked with keeping on top of a variety of weed species within the picturesque grounds and gardens, Head Gardener Simon McManus explains how together with significantly reducing the time spent hand-weeding, the L12 has also been utilised as a cleaning system to give the Castle a perfect photo finish.

Described as ‘The Gem of the Scottish Borders’, Floors Castle is the centrepiece of the beautiful Roxburghe Estate, built in 1721 and today welcoming visitors from far and wide to explore and enjoy its scenic surroundings – including approximately four acres of ornamental grounds and gardens. “The walled garden comprises four big herbaceous borders and we also have a small vegetable garden as well as private gardens which aren’t open to the public – all needing to look good year-round” explains Simon, who has been at Floors Castle for almost twenty years.

With just a team of three, plus himself, the facility were in need of both a quicker and more environmentally-friendly weed control method to traditional treatments with chemicals and labour-intensive hand-weeding. “We took delivery of our L12 unit from Weedingtech last year after an impressive demonstration. As a new technology I have to admit there was some initial scepticism but the results of the trial spoke for themselves and since our purchase, we have only discovered more and more benefits!”

The active ingredient in Foamstream is hot water, insulated by a 100% organic, plant-based foam which keeps the water in the kill-zone for long enough to effectively eliminate a range of weeds and other unwanted vegetation. The ‘plug and play’ L12 delivery system is compact and portable, with a range of wand options making it ideal for all areas and applications.

“It’s used regularly throughout the spring and summer. We went out one day in April to treat a border thick with weeds which would have previously taken the four of us a day to clear. One two-hour treatment with Foamstream and by the next morning it’s all dead. It’s also fantastic at killing moss and algae which were becoming a problem to treat around the site with the ongoing withdrawal of chemical solutions.”

Simon continues, “Over the winter when the weeds are less of an issue, we found we could use the L12 as a pressure washer to clean the roof of the glasshouses – and it did another brilliant job! It’s clear this machine is going to become a key part of our overall maintenance programme.”

Both Optimus Z zero turn mowers have been designed for durability and longevity, and come with a host of invaluable features.

The ride on model has individual rear wheel hub motors which integrate transmission for fast drive as well as park brake. It benefits from a large 18 or 24 kWh battery with a run time up to 8.5 hours per charge. Features include a water resistant storage unit to cope with our changeable weather together with cup holder and mobile phone charger. A new high level LED bar in white and amber, with flash function, make for high visibility and therefore improved safety.

The Optimus Z stand on zero turn mower measures just 92cm in width to enable it to be driven through smaller gates and around tighter obstacles. It comes with a premium leg pad for driver comfort.

In addition to the two new mowers, Cramer will be exhibiting a selection of its existing cordless professional outdoor power equipment tools, all of which are powered by an 82V battery system, and benefit from innovative features such as Magnesium components, fleet connectivity, and ultra-high torque motors to rival petrol performance.

Cramer products on show at SALTEX will include handheld equipment such as chainsaws, blowers, hedge trimmers, grass trimmers, brush cutters, multi-tools, and power cutters. Walk-behind products will also be featured, such as utility carts and lawnmowers up to 61cm (twin blade).

Cramer battery-powered products have become an increasingly popular alternative to petrol-powered products for ground care and maintenance of large parks and recreational areas in recent years. Cramer’s 82V battery system delivers the power required from commercial equipment without the negative effects that come with petrol-powered tools. They generate less heat and are significantly quieter than traditional petrol machinery, as well as safer as the risk of fuel spillage is eliminated. Ownership and running costs of tools are significantly lowered as the 82V battery system is interchangeable with other 82V products in the Cramer range and maintenance is low. What’s more, with no direct carbon emissions, they are the more environmentally friendly option for Local Authorities.

Clubs turn to Toro for irrigation

Clubs turn to Toro for irrigation: In the year the irrigation division was rebranded to Reesink Hydro-Scapes, golf clubs the length and breadth of the country made the red choice when it came to their irrigation.

With 2022 the warmest year ever, responsible irrigation has never been more of a hot topic for the UK’s golf clubs, especially when you consider the excessive dependence on potable (mains) water (the water industry puts this at around 66 percent of UK clubs) and the fact that so many irrigation systems are old (a survey by BIGGA found 74 percent of systems were more than 20 years old).

Companies like Toro have been hard at work investing in technology to ensure responsible irrigation options are available and here we look at a snapshot of customers who decided on Toro irrigation in 2022 for one of the biggest investments a club can make.

The Lynx Central Control system was a popular choice. The fact that it is designed to help customers address the unique challenges and changing priorities of their courses no doubt appealed in the face of the driest summer in 40 years and the guarantee that the country has a warming climate with extreme weather spells to come.

Clubs safeguarding the future of their club with this efficient irrigation system were Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech. It’s long been ranked within the top fifty British golf courses and most recently ranked second in the top 50 courses in Wales by Golf World – and it opted for Toro Lynx and Flex sprinklers for its greens, tees, fairways, approaches and pathways.

Opting for the same combination of Lynx and Flex were Perranporth Golf Club in Cornwall, one of Britain’s top links courses which had the combination installed on its greens and approaches, and Knighton Heath, a genuine heathland course in Dorset which covered its greens, tees and approaches.

Now come the clubs who picked Lynx with Infinity sprinklers. What sets Infinity sprinklers apart are their easy access to everything above the swing joint. You don’t need to dig up the sprinkler to get to the connections, decoder (LSM) or pilot valve – simply remove the lid by unscrewing three screws. Maintenance is made further easy by the fact that the pilot valve can be removed without isolating the water saving time and helping speed up fault finding.

Lilley Brook in Cheltenham, the England Golf Championship venue had the duo installed on its greens, tees and approaches, Stoneham Golf Club in Southampton which was designed by two-time Open champion, Willie Park Jnr did the same, as did Hartley Wintney in beautiful Hampshire and Ham Manor situated between the Sussex coast and the South Downs National Park. Finishing the roundup are loyal Toro customer Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire completing phase one of their project and Broadstone in Dorset upgrading their system and installing fairway irrigation.

The start of 2023 isn’t looking any quieter for Reesink Hydro-Scapes and its Toro irrigation range either. To find out more about responsible irrigation for your golf course, contact Reesink on 01480 226800 or visit reesinkturfcare.co.uk

Air2Root turn to Redexim

Air2Root turn to Redexim: It’s been 18 months of expansions for the team at Air2Root Turfcare Limited – new larger premises, more staff and an even bigger bank of equipment from Redexim!

Amongst their recent purchases are a Verti-Quake 2521, a SpeedSeed and a Verti-Drain 1513 complete with Carrier, which will sit proudly on their fleet alongside their OxyShot air injection unit and will help the company in their aim to become a ‘one-stop shop’ for maintenance services at venues nationwide.

Air2Root turn to Redexim

Air2Root turn to Redexim

Air2Root Turfcare pride themselves on using market-leading machinery, technology and products to deliver the very best results to facilities from across the sporting spectrum. Alongside developing their own performance-based fertiliser products, they’ve also recently become distributors for DLF Seeds and Boughton Loam. “It’s been an exciting time and the range of services we can now offer our customers has grown massively” explains Director Jamie Moult. “But to ensure we continue to deliver the quality of results our clients now expect, we must have the right machinery at our disposal. The combination of reliability and performance, along with the working relationship we have with Andy O’Neill from Redexim and their dealer network, is the reason we keep coming back.”

Unlike other contractors that run large, heavy tractors and kit, Jamie attempts to keep the majority of his equipment relatively lightweight to minimise compaction and give him complete versatility. “Our new Verti-Quake 2521 is flat out at the moment, in use on football pitches, rugby surfaces and golf fairways on a daily basis. The rotary action of the blades creates a wave motion which breaks through compacted ground down to depths of 10” – leaving very minimal disruption in its wake. We’ve had a lot of feedback from customers on the clean and tidy work the Verti-Quake has been doing, complementing the routine aeration that will have taken place throughout the year.”

“We’ve got such fantastic flexibility when it comes to completing aeration work, with the selection of Verti-Drain’s, the Verti-Quake and OxyShot we now have at our disposal. As we head into the new year, we then have our Redexim SpeedSeed and a Rink DS800 topdresser to optimise new season growth and assist with spring renovations.” Jamie concludes, “With Redexim, we know what we’re going to get and that’s equipment that consistently delivers the desired result.”
