Liner upgrade solves problems at CordeValle

Liner upgrade solves problems at CordeValle: Designed by the Robert Trent Jones II firm (and actually the firm’s home course), CordeValle GC in California’s Santa Clara Valley, has some of the largest and most imposing bunkers to be found anywhere in golf.

There may be only 63 bunkers on the golf course, but the total area of sand is a breathtaking 188,000 square feet (17,500 square metres). And, according to superintendent Brett Thornsbury, the playing consistency of the bunkers was becoming his biggest challenge..

Liner upgrade solves problems at CordeValle

“We have large, very elaborate bunkers with steep faces,” he said. “Over the years, as with all aging bunker sand, it had lost its original color, the consistency to move water, and the playability was negatively affected, especially during the dry summer months or excessive rain events. With this project, we wanted to restore the sand to its original color, ensure the health of the drainage system, and most importantly, install a bunker liner that was going to last for many years to come.”

CordeValle’s bunkers were originally lined with a geotextile, but its performance had deteriorated since the course’s opening in 1999. When Thornsbury became superintendent four years ago, he quickly realized the bunkers would need to be addressed in the near future to maintain a high-quality of playability and consistency.

In 2019, led by RTJII president Bruce Charlton, the course’s greens and approaches were renovated and regrassed.. The completion of this project left the bunkers as the next major issue to be improved , and last year, Thornsbury was able to start the work.

“We knew the bunkers needed to be relined, and we wanted a liner that could perform at the highest level, no matter the season. he said. “When we researched the options, it became clear to us that Capillary Concrete had a superior bunker product, and was the one we wanted to use.”

The bunker project began early in October of 2020, and was completed in the middle of March 2021. “We tried to have the lowest possible impact on play, using temporary greens where necessary, and always keeping eighteen holes open,” said Thornsbury. “Fortunately for us, we had a pretty dry winter allowing the project to work mostly uninterrupted. However just a few weeks ago we had our first major rain event of the season, producing six inches of rain in less than three days, which for us in Central California, is welcomed and unusual. Not one speck of sand moved in our newly completed bunkers. The team was relieved to see they didn’t require any repairs after such a heavy rain event and kept the sand shovels in the shop that morning. It’s a testimony to the Capillary Bunkers product.”

AMS Robotics GPS – RTK Upgrade

AMS Robotics GPS – RTK Upgrade: AMS Robotics, official UK distribution for the Belrobotics commercial grounds maintenance systems are well underway with their formation of a regional dealer network covering the whole of the Uk, just in time for the official introduction of the new GPS – RTK kit.

The already first class equipment just got even better, adopting all the advantages of the connected line robots in addition to some new technology which makes up the GPS – RTK system. Belrobotics have dedicated a lot towards the new kit as it is now clear this is the pathway to a more productive and sustainable future in turf care. It is still the same high performing, low noise and zero emission professional robotic mower, but better.

AMS Robotics GPS – RTK Upgrade

Equipped with the latest navigation technology available, the robots can now navigate in pattern mode. With real time Kinematic installation, the robot navigates with a 2-3 cm level precision, enabling it to mow in pattern mode with minimal overlap. This new feature will enable striping for football and other sports pitches, presenting your pitch to the highest standard. BigMow RTK’s cut height is also able to be reduced, making it suitable for cricket pitches and any other areas requiring a shorter cut.

BigMow RTK can manage an area up to 75,000m2, and due to pattern mode at a quicker speed of five times per week in comparison to BigMow connected, which will still dominate an area up to 24,000m2, however three to five times per week. ParcMow RTK can manage an area of up to 45,000m2 five times per week, in comparison to ParcMow connected which will still happily manage 12,000m2, but again with the slightly longer cut time of three to five times per week depending on the area. Both BigMow and ParcMow Connected can be upgraded with the RTK GPS anytime, which is great for existing customers that want their system to go that extra mile.

“We are very excited to introduce the new developments in the Belrobotics technology. We have been at the forefront of the professional commercial robotic mowing industry in the UK for eight years now and it is really begun to take shape over the last few years. With outdoor sports commencing at the end of the month, it’s great timing and we have some superb clients coming on board.” Philip Sear Managing Director AMS Robotics

GPS – RTK has now taken the ever growing commercial robotic mowing market to the next level and the software will continuously develop over the next year. Both Big and Parc Mow Connected and RTK are the perfect solution for sports pitches, contractors, councils and golf facilities to utilise, save money and improve the quality of their grounds. GPS – RTK is now available in the UK and the first of the products are being installed by AMS in early April. Leeds Upgrade To “ELITE” Pitches

Leeds Upgrade To “ELITE” Pitches: When 2019 pitch renovations came around, selecting a seed mixture was a straightforward decision for Kiel Barrett, Head Groundsman at Leeds United Football Club. Having looked at all blends on the market, ELITE SPORT from Barenbrug, was the product which stood out.

Kiel stated, “For starters, it is the number one mix on the market when referring to the BSPB/STRI Turfgrass Seed publication. However, after many meetings with Barenbrug’s, Phil Logan, we discussed the importance of looking beyond the booklet. For example, Barcristalla has a much darker colour and better disease tolerance then other top varieties. Sure, wear tolerance is important, but particularly stadiums need to start thinking about the new challenges we face, wear is only part of the jigsaw. We also discussed a tailored over-seeding plan to ensure we are capitalising on specific cultivar traits at the time of year when they will benefit us the most, not just a one-size-fits-all approach”.

Leeds Upgrade To “ELITE” Pitches

Kiel was so impressed with the product that he made the decision to change all the pitches to ELITE SPORT. That included the iconic stadium, Elland Road, and every pitch at the training ground at Thorp Arch.

Deputy Head Groundsman at Thorp Arch, Stefan Jones, commented, “The germination and establishment speed was excellent, we couldn’t have asked for better. I was also very impressed with the purity of the seed; we have had very few weeds.” Kiel added, “Thorp Arch is a challenging site, in a wet part of Yorkshire that sees heavy wear combined with intense disease pressure. ELITE SPORT has stood up well to the challenge and was the obvious choice for us in our conditions”.

ELITE SPORT stands to be improved upon further in 2020 with some exciting new cultivars yet to be announced.
