Lantra celebrates Green Careers Week

Lantra celebrates Green Careers Week: Lantra is excited to announce that it will be celebrating Green Careers Week, alongside many other organisations, this year. Lantra will be highlighting some of the more surprising careers that people can have within the land-based and environment sector, aligning with the campaign theme of unearthing non-stereotypical green careers.

Working in partnership with Chevron Green Services, Lantra have been exploring the careers of some of Chevron’s operatives and supervisors, and hearing about what their day looks like, working on the UK’s road network.

When thinking of a person being an operative on the UK’s road network, careers in traffic management and road works, such as pipe and cable works, or pothole repairs, might come to mind. However, there are a lot of diverse careers working on the road network, including arborists, also known as tree surgeons, and landscapers.

Keeping the roads safe for the public to use is paramount for those working in the road network sector. With many of the high-speed roads, and urban roads, having trees and vegetation lining the sides, it’s important that the greenery on the network is managed well, including reducing risks to the public.

Commenting on the surprising careers in highways, Steph Stevens, Careers and Engagement Manager at Lantra, said: “We know that many people use the road network every day; going to work, taking children to school, or going to the supermarket. However, the management of the natural environment surrounding our roads isn’t always seen.

“That’s why for Green Careers Week, Lantra have teamed up with Chevron Green Services to show the surprising careers that exist within the highways industry.”

Commenting on the Green Careers Week Campaign, Dan Taylor, Operations Director at Chevron Green Services, said: “It’s great to be working with Lantra on the Green Careers Week campaign. The natural environment that surrounds our road network is so important, and we at Chevron Green Services play our role in actively managing this ensuring the natural environment is thriving whilst keeping our road network safe for all users.”

Alongside the work of the arborists and landscapers, maintaining the green environment, Chevron Green Services also work with ecologists ensuring that habitats are managed to a high standard, and that any works that do take place have minimal impact on species that live in the environments that surround the road network.

Some wildlife species, such as bats, badgers, and great-crested newts, are protected by law and their habitats must be managed to a very high standard, before any maintenance works take place. Through teamwork and collaboration, arborists and landscapers work with ecologists to support species and protect their habitats and environments, causing minimal impact where possible.

Throughout Green Careers Week, Lantra will be posting engaging and insightful content about the surprising green careers within the highways industry on social media. They will also be sharing more insightful videos as a documentary series on YouTube.

Origin’s ‘Golf Research Week’

Origin’s ‘Golf Research Week’: More than 150 turf professionals recently attended the very first Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) ‘Golf Research Week’.

Visitors were welcomed to learn more about the establishment of the Origin Amenity Technology Centre in Dunmow, Essex, and see first-hand the work underway in the OAS greenhouse and trials site that will bring benefit to greenkeeping practices, and to the turf management industry as a whole.

Greenkeepers and managers from across the sporting spectrum joined a number of the OAS technical team for the event which took place in mid-September. Following a warm welcome and company overview, speakers outlined how the £0.5 million investment in the technology centre is facilitating trials, research and data collection to safeguard the future of the industry – considering the impacts that the climate, environmental factors and legislative pressures are having on products and practices.

Following the talks, seven stations then provided attendees with an overview of some of the different areas of the Origin Amenity business, including a RainBird irrigation workshop and a laboratory session exploring the world of soil microbiology beneath our feet. Outside, guests were treated to a tour of the greenhouse, amenity area and trials site – the first results of which, from winter 2021, were also shared.

One of the many in attendance was Vince DeMarzo, 1st Assistant at Wildernesse Golf Club. Reflecting on the event, he said “The Origin brands are a household name in our industry, so an opportunity to get an insight into what happens behind the scenes wasn’t to be missed! It was great to see the meticulous detail that goes into producing the best products for us and discover how much research goes into them before they get to market. It was a well-organised day which reiterated with those that attended why we have so much trust in the OAS brands.”

Key to co-ordinating the event OAS Research & Development Director Geoff Fenn added, “We are really proud of the scope and quality of the scientific trial work we can conduct at Throws Technology Centre and it is exciting to be able to open the site to our friends and customers to demonstrate how we’re moving forward. We were keen for our guests to have a relaxed, educational and enjoyable day where everybody could take home some valuable information that would be beneficial for their own site. Based on the fantastic feedback we’ve had, we’re absolutely delighted with its success and we’re already looking forward to putting on some bigger and better events in the future.”

Agrovista Amenity celebrates National Tree Week

Agrovista Amenity celebrates National Tree Week: After joining The Tree Council as a Jubilee Partner, Agrovista Amenity recently participated in a planting day to celebrate National Tree Week.

The Tree Council is an official delivery partner of The Queen’s Green Canopy, which is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

By becoming one of the Jubilee Partners, Agrovista Amenity will be playing an integral role in planting trees and hedgerows in honour of Her Majesty’s service to the nation, creating a lasting legacy which will benefit future generations for years to come.

The aim is to achieve the planting of an incredible 35,000 trees and 7 kilometres of hedgerows.

Agrovista Amenity recently celebrated its Jubilee Partner status during National Tree Week by attending a planting day which took place in Bicester in Oxfordshire. The Agrovista Amenity team joined 50 other volunteers who also came from corporate partner organisations.

Together the volunteers planted along a riverbank and a bridleway, creating connectivity for local wildlife as well as helping introduce all the other benefits that trees and hedgerows can bring, such as pollution mitigation and flood prevention. Species included hawthorn, blackthorn, white poplar, holly, oak and more in an incredible 183 metres of hedgerow.

Furthermore, the volunteers planted some rare black poplar trees, of which there are only 10,000 of these left in the UK – so it was encouraging to be boosting their numbers.

Ed Smith, Landscape Team Manager for Agrovista Amenity, was delighted to play a part in the planting day.

“The positive work that The Tree Council and so many volunteers have undertaken to restore woodland and hedgerows as part of a greener future has been amazing,” he said.

“Our planet is changing and joining The Tree Council on their planting day was a great opportunity to practice what we preach. Not only are we planting to make positive changes for the future, but we are making these changes in the most sustainable way possible.”

Cat Gransden, Development Manager for The Tree Council, said: “We’re so grateful to Agrovista for attending our planting day and for being part of our Jubilee Partner programme. Together, we’re creating an environmental and cultural legacy in honour of Her Majesty’s historic 70 years of service and growing a greener future for all of us. It is thanks to our incredible corporate partners, like Agrovista, that we’re able to plant, protect and promote so many trees and hedgerows. Working together for the love of trees allows us to achieve great things, and green-hearted corporate heroes help us to create a healthy, tree-filled future for our planet. Thank you.”
