Dennis Mowers Partners with Edgbaston Stadium

Dennis Mowers Partners with Edgbaston Stadium: Dennis Mowers is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Edgbaston Stadium and Warwickshire County Cricket Club. This collaboration is aimed at achieving two significant objectives: becoming the most sustainable cricket ground in the country by having a fully electric range of mowers and enhancing education and support for local grassroots cricket clubs.

A Sustainable Future for Edgbaston

Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Edgbaston Stadium, are committed to becoming fully sustainable by 2030. This ambitious goal includes transitioning to a completely electric fleet of mowers. The partnership with Dennis Mowers, part of the Howardson Group, is a crucial step toward this objective.

Gary Barwell, Head of Sports Turf at Edgbaston, explained the vision: “We have made a commitment that by 2030 we would like to have a fully electric fleet of mowers. We didn’t want to do it as a half-baked project; we wanted it to be across the main ground and the training ground, making us the first club to be fully electric. It was a case of finding a manufacturer that could supply everything we needed.

“Choosing to work with Dennis Mowers was an easy decision due to their high standards and their extensive experience supplying mowers to top-tier sporting teams. Bringing them in was a secure and confident move for both the club, the venue and myself. The quality and reliability of the mowers also ensure we maintain the high standards we have adhered to over the years.”

The Dennis E-Series range, including the ES-22 Ultra, ES-36, ES-760, and ES-34R, has been chosen for this transition. These battery-powered mowers offer exceptional performance, with features like adjustable speeds, interchangeable cassettes, and superior cutting quality, all while being environmentally friendly.

Gary highlighted the advantages of the mowers: “The performance levels have been so good, the grass is healthy, the cut is so strong and there has been no drop-off from switching from petrol to battery. In fact, I would argue that there has been an upturn. The balance and overall performance are being praised by all of the team members.”

Cascading Knowledge to Grassroots Clubs

In addition to sustainability, the partnership focuses on educating and supporting local grassroots cricket clubs. The aim is to help improve the skills of groundstaff, enhance pitch quality, and ultimately increase participation in the game.

Gary is enthusiastic about this educational aspect: “The partnership is incredibly exciting and is going to be very promising for the industry. I want to help people by demonstrating the work we are doing here at Edgbaston and extend this knowledge to other clubs. I am extremely passionate about turf and cricket, and the idea is to work together with Dennis to improve cricket pitches.”

Dennis plans to involve Gary in educational seminars and training sessions for cricket clubs, sharing best practices and demonstrating the capabilities of their equipment. This hands-on approach aims to create a lasting legacy by empowering local clubs with the knowledge and tools to maintain top-quality pitches.

A Partnership for the Future

Roger Moore, Head of Marketing at The Howardson Group, expressed his excitement about the partnership: “We are thrilled to partner with Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Gary Barwell. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to sustainability and community support. We look forward to a fruitful partnership that will benefit cricket clubs at all levels.”

Ben Seifas, Head of Sales and Partnerships at Edgbaston, added: “We’re delighted to welcome the Howardson Group into our partnership family. Dennis is a brand renowned around the world within elite sport venues for innovation and excellence, aligning with our values and our sustainability ambitions. This is the first partnership of its kind for the Howardson Group, and we are delighted to be the venue of choice to showcase their high-quality products.”

As Warwickshire County Cricket Club moves forward with its sustainability initiatives and educational outreach, the partnership with Dennis Mowers stands as a testament to their shared vision for a greener, more knowledgeable future in cricket.

Carbon Gold partners with Westland Horticulture

Carbon Gold partners with Westland Horticulture: Carbon Gold, the world’s leading biochar brand, is proud to announce a new partnership with Westland Horticulture.

Established in 2007, Carbon Gold has pioneered advancements in the biochar industry, achieving B-Corp certification and earning The King’s Royal Warrant. Their Soil Association-approved products, underpinned by nearly two decades of research and development, have set industry standards for sustainable soil management.

This partnership marks a significant milestone as it introduces a range of enriched biochar products to conventional garden retailers for the first time. Home gardeners will now have accessible solutions to naturally improve the health of their soil, sequester carbon and mitigate climate in a simple, accessible and sustainable way.

Biochar production is a scientifically verified Negative Emissions Technology CO2 removal process, recognised as a Nature Based Solution. By converting unutilised woody biomass into biochar through net negative pyrolysis technology, Carbon Gold removes CO2 from the atmosphere. Biochar serves as a carbon sink when integrated into soil or substrates, contributing to environmental sustainability.

For over a decade, Carbon Gold products have been used professionally by commercial fruit and vegetable growers, professional tree growers, sports turf such as Premier League football clubs, racing and golf courses and in urban landscaping. Home growers and gardeners will now have greater access to enriched biochar products which rejuvenate tired soils and compost, naturally hold water in summer months and allow for quicker rooting when planting out.

Westland, a world-leader in peat-free technology, sees this partnership with Carbon Gold as a strategic enhancement to its portfolio, bolstering offerings for consumers and professional growers alike while reinforcing Westland’s dedication to sustainable horticulture.

Keith Nicholson, Marketing Director at Westland Horticulture commented: “Enriched biochar has an important role to play in the future of sustainable gardening. Carbon Gold has developed a range of environmentally conscious products that we will bring to many gardeners going forward. This collaboration again places Westland at the forefront of
consumer horticulture and displays our commitment to delivering real, sustainable gardening.”

Executive Chairman, Craig Sams, added: “We’re excited for this partnership with Westland – as a leader in the horticulture industry and a business that shares our goals, we’re confident that working together will encourage gardeners to choose a more environmentally-friendly approach, with biochar at its heart. Biochar has the potential to make a significant contribution to this CO2 removal, using the soil for carbon capture and storage. That is our mission.”

Dennis & SISIS Partner with Croquet England

Dennis & SISIS Partner with Croquet England: Dennis and SISIS, in association with Croquet England, recently hosted a highly informative Croquet Lawn/Court Maintenance One-Day Seminar at the Bristol Croquet Club. The event attracted croquet enthusiasts and lawn care professionals eager to enhance their knowledge and skills in maintaining croquet lawns to the highest standards.

The day began with registrations and refreshments, followed by an introduction and welcome from Robert Jack of Dennis and SISIS. Robert emphasised the importance of thorough lawn maintenance and the value of the seminar’s hands-on approach.

Stuart Yarwood from DLF led the first session by focusing on evaluating and preparing croquet lawns. Participants gained insights into understanding the lawn’s condition beneath the surface. This presentation particularly struck a chord with attendee Martin Pollard, who said, “We really enjoyed the day and learned a lot from it, with the key takeaway for us being that we are not doing enough analysis of what’s underneath the surface.”

Following a refreshment break, Robert Jack discussed how to get the best performance from your mower. This session covered the intricacies of mower maintenance and operation. Attendee Simon Clay commented, “The whole day was really helpful from the initial lectures on lawn management to the practical session on lawnmower maintenance – it was a revelation.”

After a complimentary lunch, attendees moved to the lawn for practical demonstrations. These demonstrations covered essential lawn care techniques, including aeration, scarification, brushing, and mowing. The hands-on nature of this session allowed participants to see the equipment in action and understand its application. Attendee Tim Martin said, “Whilst I knew a bit about grass cutting, aeration and treatments, the day brought the whole thing together and also filled many gaps!”

Stuart then presented on End of Season Renovation of a Croquet/Lawn Court, providing tips and strategies for maintaining lawn quality and health during the off-season. This session emphasised the importance of seasonal care to ensure year-round playability and lawn longevity.

The day concluded with a ‘Turf Clinic’—a Q&A session where attendees could ask specific questions and receive expert advice from the presenters. This interactive session offered tailored solutions and clarified any remaining doubts. Martin Pollard said, “The instructors knew their stuff and were excellent.”

The seminar was a resounding success, with participants leaving with a wealth of knowledge and practical tips to implement in their lawn maintenance routines. Dennis and SISIS, in collaboration with Croquet England, look forward to hosting more such events in the future to continue supporting the croquet community and promoting excellence in lawn care.

Terrain Aeration scores with Hallam Grange

Terrain Aeration scores with Hallam Grange: Hallam Grange Bowling Club has its roots in a tennis and sports club dating back a hundred years. Located to the west of the vibrant city of Sheffield, today’s club draws enthusiasts of all ages and levels with first-class facilities and until recently the bowling green was no exception.

Well maintained and meticulously taken care of by a small number of members and led by volunteer green keeper, Martin Westley, the green had begun to suffer after last winter and the exceptionally wet build-up into spring. It was known the green was originally constructed on an area used for spoils from house building many years ago and the only drainage was in the gutters around the edge.

“Usually, we have a smooth, even, and top-quality surface,” says Martin, “but last winter was so very wet and we started to get pooling across the green. We have done regular vertidraining down to about twelve inches, but each time there’s heavy rain we have standing water. We were certain the combination of the original foundation of the green and sixty plus years of play had led to compaction at depth and lack of drainage.”

Martin did some research to see what was available to solve the problem. He came across Terrain Aeration and spoke to other clubs whose greens had been treated as long as fifteen years ago and were still draining freely.

The Terrain Aeration Terralift system works on the principle of a probe drilling down to a metre depth and releasing compressed air at a maximum of 20Bar (280psi). This fractures and fissures the soil to allow drainage. On the tail end of the blast, dried, milled seaweed is injected. Over time, the seaweed expands and contracts in the soil, similar to ‘breathing’ underground, to help keep the fractures open. The probe is removed, and the process repeated using two-metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern. This grid ensures that each probe shot links with the previous ones. Terrain Aeration says the long-term solution leaves little surface disruption and allows immediate play after treatment. That was certainly the case for Hallam Grange. Martin says, “Terrain Aeration arrived at ten in the morning and worked through to about three in the afternoon, and you couldn’t really tell where they had been. We played a league match at six-thirty the same day.”
