Amenity Forum Speakers Confirmed

Amenity Forum Speakers Confirmed: The Amenity Forum Conference is now well established as a must attend event for those involved in or with an interest in all aspects of amenity management.

In 2019 it is being held once again at the Pirelli Stadium, Burton upon Trent, on Thursday, October 10th. The conference will be entitled ‘21st Century Amenity Management’ and it will have a strong focus upon innovation and taking an integrated approach to weed, pest and disease management. It will also provide updates on policy issues and is a great opportunity to network.

Once again the event has an impressive range of speakers and the full programme can be found at https://amenityforum.co.uk/conference/the-amenity-forum-conference-2019/ The speakers include Professor Michael Eddleston from the University of Edinburgh who is set to provide an entertaining and informative presentation on Human Health issues and Dr.David Hughes from Syngenta who will give a fascinating insight into new technologies and innovations coming the way of amenity managers in the future. There will be what promises to be a very informative session on approaches to integrated management with contributions from practitioners covering all aspects. These will be supported by other key speakers giving their views on the future. The conference will round up with a presentation from Jim McKenzie, MBE, Director of Estates and Golf Courses, Celtic Manor entitled ‘The pressures and challenges of creating and maintaining high quality playing conditions and facilities for a major golfing venue’

During the conference category winners for the Amenity Sprayer Operator of the Year Awards will be announced. There will also be the launch of the new Amenity Standard. This is seen as very much a game changer in our sector providing a standard akin to the Red Tractor in food and agriculture.

Amenity Forum At SALTEX 2019

Amenity Forum At SALTEX 2019: The Amenity Forum has been invited to host a Question Time session at SALTEX in 2019 on the 30th October. This will be run on the lines of the television programme and this year’s panel included Dr. Dan Jones from Advanced Invasives, Peter Corbett from Rigby Taylor and Will Kay from Languard. A further panel member will be announced shortly. It will commence at 2pm. Also in the morning of that day, our chairman, John Moverley, will chair a discussion on disease management.

On October 10th, the Amenity Forum is holding its annual conference and exhibition, an event which has become very much ‘must attend’ for all involved in or with an interest in amenity management. This year the theme is ‘21st Century Amenity Management’ and is set to be the best yet with some excellent speakers and exhibitors. It will be held at the Pirelli Stadium at Burton on Trent. DLF Join The Amenity Forum

DLF Join The Amenity Forum: DLF Seeds, the world’s largest producer and distributor of grass seed, have become members of The Amenity Forum. They join over 70 other organisations, covering all aspects of the sector, to deliver research and information to those responsible for natural turf areas.

Amenity Forum Chairman Professor John Moverley commented, “We are delighted that DLF Seeds have joined the Amenity Forum and, by doing so, have demonstrated their commitment to delivering best practice in the sector. The forum advocates a fully integrated approach to amenity management, and choice of the right grass seed and its management thereafter is an important part of that.”

As part of their relationship, DLF recently hosted an update event at their Didbrook research station. On the day, DLF UK Breeding Manager Tony Strickland delivered an insight into their Global R&D amenity grass breeding programme, and the 16 years of development, profiling and testing that goes into bringing a new variety to market. The event concluded with a visit the Amenity plots, to look at DLF’s portfolio of cultivars currently under trial. John added, “The day was a fantastic opportunity to update those that attended on current policy issues, as well as to provide information on the new Assured Standard for the sector, which is due to be launched later this year.”

Amenity Forum’s Recent Events

Amenity Forum’s Recent Events: The management of amenity areas is a vital and important task creating safe and healthy public spaces fit for purpose. It is vital that such tasks are undertaken to the highest professional standards but, as it stands, although there are a number of recognised assurance schemes, there is no overall standard which can easily be recognised as demonstrating those undertaking amenity management operations are professionally competent and using methods at the highest standards of best practice.

Given that, the Amenity Forum is developing a standard for the sector. This will inform the public, and those who place tenders or employ operators that the processes implemented are safe and healthy and fit for purpose. The standard will be akin to the Red Tractor logo which is widely recognised in the food sector. It will be instantly recognisable and will verify that the various assurance schemes in the sector are maintained at the overall standard.

In the current climate, cost will always be a key factor when considering amenity management plans but it is vital that quality and standards are an essential element in the final decision. The new standard and accompanying logo will give confidence to all involved.

Those attending London and Belfast recently as part of the popular series of free Amenity Forum Updating events organised welcomed the proposals. It was recognised that many do currently look to employ contractors and the like with assured credentials such as Amenity Assured, there remains others who operate outside such standards. The new Amenity Standard seeks to address this and ensure it is as widely recognised in the amenity sector as the Red Tractor is in food.

Professor John Moverley, Chairman of the Forum, said ‘’I would like to see this standard as an essential requirement when employing anyone involved in amenity management. If employing a gas fitter, I seek to ensure he or she is CORGI registered, a similar requirement should be essential in amenity management. There are a number of well recognised assurance schemes in our sector, this new standard seeks to embrace these and in a simple way, provide everyone of an assured standard and best practice. I would like to see the logo associated the standard to be proudly displayed across the UK in our parks, golf courses, sports grounds and indeed all our public spaces’’

The new standard is due to be launched later this year and in the meantime, everyone is urged to seek evidence of a recognised assurance scheme when employing those charged with amenity management in all its forms.
