As part of the new charity partnership Perennial will launch the STIHL equipment replacement fund, to help those in need with donations of tools and PPE.

STIHL GB’s Head of Marketing, Simon Hewitt, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Perennial, a charity whose purpose is so closely linked to our own values.  STIHL has been focused on making people’s lives easier when working in and with nature since our founder, Andreas Stihl, invented the first portable chainsaw in the 1920s.  In pledging our support to Perennial and combining our efforts we hope together we can help many more people in horticulture.”

Phil Swainston, Perennial’s Corporate Partnership Manager, said: “The financial and social pressures faced by individuals working in, and retired from, horticulture are acute, particularly in today’s challenging economic climate where horticulture professionals often contend with relatively low pay and the physical demands of their work. Perennial serves as a lifeline for many in our community, and thus, STIHL’s invaluable support plays a crucial role in our ability to assist those within the horticulture community. STIHL’s support holds immense value, especially as we’ve seen a notable 21% increase in individuals from our sector seeking personal support and a significant rise in those accessing our online tools.”

Kubota announces new aftersales dealer managers

Kubota announces new aftersales dealer managers: Kubota (UK) Ltd is pleased to announce that Krissi Holt and Neil Scott have been appointed as aftersales dealer managers for Kubota agricultural, groundcare and construction equipment.

These new roles follow internal promotion and expansion at Kubota, and represent additional investment in aftersales, creating further dealer support for parts supply, service knowledge and warranty within Kubota’s ongoing dealer development programme. The aftersales dealer manager role is one that adds value to the customer service experience by improving the relationship between dealer and customer.

Supporting the dealer network across the East and South East of England, Krissi Holt joins the business with 10 years of industry experience. Krissi’s last six years were with Lister Wilder as a service manager before progressing to a pre-delivery inspection centre as a key account manager.

“Having worked in a dealership I have a thorough understanding of the challenges that dealers face,” said Krissi. “And that past experience certainly helps in my role as an aftersales dealer manager, to support their businesses.”

“Being able to work directly for a manufacturer is the career progression I sought, and with Kubota, my new role opens up many more possibilities beyond working solely within the groundcare sector,” said Krissi.

The second new appointment is Neil Scott, who is Kubota’s aftersales dealer manager for agricultural, groundcare and construction equipment covering the Midlands, North West of England and Wales.

Neil brings with him 11 years of industry experience, having worked for two Cheshire-based dealerships – the latter as parts manager for Cheshire Farm Machinery.

“I was always interested in tractors and machinery, even at school,” recalled Neil. “And after I completed higher education at Reaseheath College, I saw opportunities to progress through the trade working with high-profile dealerships. When my Kubota aftersales dealer manager was promoted, I saw an opening to further develop my career by joining a manufacturer.”

Commenting on the new aftersales dealer manager roles, Kubota’s agricultural and groundcare sales manager Tim Yates said: “This is a great opportunity to further develop the support available for our dealers, as we continue to reach many more customers across the industries in which we operate.”

GroundsFest Announces Education Fund

GroundsFest Announces Education Fund: Organisers of GroundsFest have announced that event profits are being reinvested back into the industry to form The GroundsFest Education Fund.

The GroundsFest Education Fund has been designed to provide support to help students at land-based colleges overcome specific barriers to participation so they can remain in education. The aim of the Fund is to not only support and enhance a student’s education experience but to encourage more people into the industry by making education more accessible.

Through profits generated from GroundsFest, students will be able to reach their full potential by obtaining funding for a wide range of items such as course literature, stationary, tools, laptops, computers and other electrical goods, driving lessons, and accredited training courses on subjects including machinery, weed management, sports turf maintenance, lawn care, arboriculture and many more.

Commenting on The GroundsFest Education Fund, Event Director Christopher Bassett said: “Unfortunately, the number of young people embarking on a career in grounds management is in decline and collectively, we should be doing all we can to change this. Education is the first step into the industry but the numbers coming through and qualifying are worryingly low.

After several conversations, we were shocked to hear that students are being forced out of education or are being prevented from entering education due to not having the money to purchase necessary items. Our aim was to always give back to the industry through the event and therefore we are extremely proud to be launching The GroundsFest Education Fund.”

The scheme will be trialled for the first year at Wiltshire College & University Centre before being rolled out nationwide. Victoria Fiander, Assessor in Horticulture, and Bradley Tennant, Sports Turf Lecturer, both from Wiltshire College, were instrumental in the development of The GroundsFest Education Fund.

Commenting on the new scheme, Bradley said: “The Education Fund is a fantastic initiative for students to access opportunities they may otherwise not have. Coming from a public school, and a council area background I would have loved to have had an opportunity like this, having personally paid for my own certificates such as spraying, tractor driving, and chainsaw tickets, knowing this is a key area that holds many back from pay rises or even progression within their workplace.

“Working with students, I know they often can’t find work due to travel arrangements. We are located in a very rural area, and having access to The GroundsFest Education Fund has the potential to bring more young people into our industry. Something as simple as driving lessons could pave the way for their future to become an industry leader.

“Land-based colleges are the point of entry for the vast majority of horticulture, from sports turf stadiums to the local garden centre. It’s vital we support our colleges. There are currently only 12 land-based colleges within the UK, which is a worrying number considering you can’t turn your head without seeing something that’s been involved with horticulture in some form.

The industry is struggling from top to bottom and education is the way forward.”

Bernhard announces new Canadian distribution partner

Bernhard announces new Canadian distribution partner: The industry-leader in fine turf management solutions, Bernhard and Company, has continued its development within the Canadian territory via a new partnership with Canadian distributor, OJ Compagnie.

Founded in 1967, OJ Compagnie was originally set-up as a specialised seed company, before moving into the golf sphere. Since then, the family-run business has continued to evolve and now conducts around 65% of its operations in golf, with the remaining focus split between lawn care, sod growers, municipal turf, and other businesses within the turf industry.

The new relationship comes as Bernhard and Company looks to increase its business presence through improved contact with new prospects across Canada, with OJ Compagnie covering the geographical area of Quebec.

Commenting on the new partnership, Phil Jangl at OJ Compagnie, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Bernhard and Company and we believe it’s a relationship that will be a hugely beneficial one for both parties.

“I would say that every golf course in Quebec is our customer, whether on a large scale or on a small scale, and we’re well known in the industry. I think we have a good reputation for our customer service and showing that we really care, which is something that Bernhard and Company has always demonstrated too – making this relationship a perfect fit.”

Gary Ray, Bernhard and Company’s Business Development Manager for North America, added: “We are thrilled to continue to enhance our presence in Canada. OJ Compagnie is a business that is undeniably aligned to our values and principles, and we are excited to see where this partnership leads.”

OJ was originally founded by Otto Jangl in 1967, amassing nearly 50 years of experience in the turf maintenance industry. After Otto Jangl passed away in 2008, the business has been run by his children, Gabrielle Jangl and Phil Jangl.

Bernhard and Company grinding machines are used by more than 65 per cent of the world’s top 100 golf courses to ensure perfect, tournament-ready playing conditions year-round, while the company’s turf management solutions and educational support are utilised at major sporting events around the globe.
