STIHL’s New Cordless Chainsaw

STIHL’s New Cordless Chainsaw: Ideal for forestry and agricultural work, STIHL has launched the new MSA 220 C-B, the most powerful cordless chainsaw in the STIHL range.

Designed with a high chain speed, the powerful MSA 220 C-B makes quick work of any task and guarantees consistently high-quality cutting performance, regardless of the battery charge level. The new PRO cordless chainsaw is ideally suited for felling, thinning work, construction and wood carving.

STIHL Launch New Cordless Chainsaw

The new MSA 220 C-B comes as standard with the STIHL exclusive 3/8″ Picco Super 3 (PS3) full chisel saw chain with a guide bar length of 35cm/14”. This chain has a high cutting performance and a low kick-back.

As part of STIHL’s PRO cordless range, the MSA 220 C-B is powered by a 36 V Lithium-Ion battery. The new AP 300 S battery is recommended to ensure the best possible cutting performance, and is also compatible with all other tools within the STIHL PRO Cordless system.

The sturdy MSA 220 C-B is suitable for use in any type of weather and also enables cutting work in confined areas, making it the ideal tool for professionals working in horticulture and perfect for use when wood carving. The quiet-running and easy to operate chainsaw is a high quality alternative for many tasks including agriculture, forestry and contract work that does not compromise on performance.

The details at a glance

  • Powerful with a high chain speed

The STIHL MSA 220 C-B starts with ease, accelerates quickly and always maintains a high cutting performance, regardless of the battery charge level. Responsible for this is the electronically controlled brushless electric motor. This EC motor is extremely efficient and works almost wear-free. In addition, the STIHL AP 300 S battery, which is also new, has 25 percent more capacity compared to the AP 300 and can run for up to 45 minutes with one charge. Thanks to the high chain speed of 24 m/s, the work can be carried out quickly even when delimbing smaller sized timber.

  • Strong cutting full chisel saw chain

The MSA 220 C-B is fitted with a full chisel saw chain as standard: the STIHL exclusive 3/8″ Picco Super 3 has a powerful cutting performance, low vibrations and a low kickback. It ensures excellent cutting quality with low feedback. Its high cutting performance increases energy efficiency. This pays off in up to 30 percent more cuts per battery charge compared to a semi-chisel chain. In addition, its wider kerf simplifies work when using a felling wedge.

  • Ergonomic and comfortable

The raised and printed felling line enables precise targeting and exact work when felling small trees. Thanks to the compact design and the soft rubber handle, the tool fits comfortably and securely in the hand. Other practical features include the quick chain tensioner, which enables the chain to be retightened without tools, and the semi-transparent oil tank, which allows the user to keep an eye on the oil level at all times.

  • Modular battery system

The new AP 300 S 36 V Lithium-Ion battery is compatible with all tools within the STIHL PRO cordless system. In addition to the new chainsaw, this includes more than 25 other tools for a wide variety of applications, as well as batteries with different energy supplies and chargers.

Makita Launch New Cordless Chainsaws

Makita Launch New Cordless Chainsaws: Makita chainsaws are renowned amongst forestry professionals for power, performance, reliability and great value.  The new Makita DUC355Z and DUC405Z twin 18V Brushless LXT Chainsaws supply energy to the powerful 36V DC motor drive system inherent in these models.  Combining the power and market-leading features that the industry has asked for, these new chainsaws are expected to be well received.

Compact and lightweight, these rear-handled chainsaws, with bar lengths of 35cm and 40cm respectively, can utilise twin Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries that generate a 1100 watt output to run the 3/8th inch chain over the 35cm and 40cm bars at up to 20 metres per second.  This exceeds the performance of Makita’s mains powered machines.  The Brushless motor ensures longer runtime, substantially greater power and overall lower maintenance.

Recognised as an industry benchmark these new models feature the main power switch with the Auto power-off function making them ultra-safe in use.  This function automatically turns the machine off, to protect the operator from unintentional start up should the switch trigger not be pulled for a period of a few seconds after the main power switch has been turned off.

Weighing 4.8kg, without batteries, these cordless machines feature a variable speed control trigger, electric chain brake, kick-back chain brake and battery protection circuit.  Sold as body only machines these LXT chainsaws have a constant speed control; adjustable automatic chain lubrication and oil capacity display, as well as a comfortable ergonomic grip and metal spike bar that enables a firm grip to the timber.

Both models feature captive nuts designed to satisfy industry demand.  This facility prevents loss of nuts when removing the sprocket cover to replace the guide bar, or saw chain, which greatly improves operator convenience and ease of use.

Makita’s New Cordless Chainsaw: Makita is introducing a new cordless 18V top handle chainsaw, which has been designed for forestry professionals.

Makita chainsaws have gained a high reputation amongst forestry professionals with models that are renowned for power, performance, rugged reliability and value.  The new Makita DUC254Z 18V Brushless Top Handle Chainsaw LXT is no exception.  With a single 18V Lithium-Ion battery it generates a 570 watt output providing ample power to run the 3/8th inch chain over the 25cm bar at up to 24 metres per second matching the performance of a petrol machine.  The Brushless motor ensures longer runtime, substantially greater power and lower maintenance.

Makita's New Cordless Chainsaw

Setting an industry benchmark this new model features the main power switch with Auto-Off function making it one of the safest chainsaws on the market.  It automatically turns the machine off if the operator does not grip the lock-off lever within 10 seconds of turning the machine on.  Equally, the Auto-Off function kicks in if the operator does not trigger the switch within one minute, even if the lock-off lever is gripped.  And again, if the operator does not grip the lock-off lever within 10 seconds after releasing the lock-off lever the Auto-Off function takes control.  Classified as a top-handle model this chainsaw should only be used by trained and certificated professionals.

Light and compact, weighing just 2.8kg, this cordless machine is designed for operators when climbing and for single handed use, and is ideal for tree pruning.  Neatly packaged with a sturdy hand-grip the DUC254Z features a variable speed control trigger, electric chain brake and kickback brake.  This model also provides a soft start function which accelerates the motor into action reducing the sudden torque load on start up.  Sold as body only, this LXT chainsaw has an oil capacity display, hanging hook and captive nuts.

Makita’s cordless chainsaws offer low noise in operation, low vibrations for operator protection and comfort, zero emissions to protect the environment and unbeatable charge times.  The Makita range of cordless and 2-stroke chainsaws is comprehensive to cover the needs of professional users and industry applications with selected models being the product of choice of the British Army and are used by specialist disaster relief charity DART International UK.

Cobra’s Cordless Convenience

Cobra’s Cordless Convenience: The last two years has seen significant growth in the garden product market for battery powered equipment. One brand which has fully embraced this technology is Cobra which has two lithium-ion battery options in its range with both a 40-volt and a 24-volt system.

The 40-volt range consists of six products – three mowers, a grass trimmer, a chainsaw and a hedgetrimmer. The 24 volt range has three products with a grass trimmer, blower and hedgetrimmer.

Cobra’s Cordless Convenience

Managing director of Cobra, Peter Chaloner, explains the difference: “Our ethos at Cobra is about offering something for every gardener and every garden, which is why we now have over 150 powered products in our range. We wanted to create products that deliver the exact amount of power required for each gardening task, particularly within our battery offering, so we introduced the 40-volt system as well as the 24-volt option for handheld products. 24-volts is ideal for domestic gardeners as it delivers the optimum amount of power without having a hefty price tag. In addition to that the products are light and easy to use so perfect for a quick bit of garden maintenance”.

The broader benefits of battery powered products have now been widely recognized by gardeners who are seeking convenience and a hassle-free alternative that is quick and easy to use and store. Each battery is transferable throughout its system.

Compared with traditional battery technology, Cobra lithium-ion batteries charge faster, last longer and have a higher power density for more battery life in a lighter package. The three mowers (a 16” hand-propelled, a 16” hand propelled rear roller and a 18” self-propelled) all utilise a 4ah battery to give 30 minutes usage from a 90 minute charge. The handheld 40-volt products also take 90 minutes to charge from flat and the grass trimmer has an 80 minute runtime, the hedgetrimmer is 85 minutes and the chainsaw is 50 minutes.

The 24-volt range is powered by 2ah batteries which charge in two hours. The run time varies depending on the task but the grass trimer will have an average usage of 30 minutes, the blower will be 20 minutes and the hedgetrimmer 50 minutes. Spare batteries and chargers are also available to guarantee continuous usage whilst one battery is charging.
