Young greenkeepers day a success: The greenkeeping industry is in good hands if the first Young Greenkeepers Education Day is anything to go by.

The event earlier this year was supported by Toro and Reesink Turfcare, who were also two of the sponsors, and organised by Ryan Neale, greenkeeper at Blackwell Golf Club in his role on the BIGGA Young Greenkeeper Committee, Alex Brougham from Trentham Park Golf Club and Danny Patten from Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. It was designed to inspire and educate young greenkeepers through a series of interactive sessions, machinery, irrigation and tractor demonstrations and career development advice.

Rochelle Bedford, marketing manager at Reesink Turfcare, the sole distributor in the UK for Toro’s golf and sports fields equipment and irrigation, and TYM products, says: “The initiative of these three young greenkeepers to have come up with the idea for this and to implement it, is really inspiring and it’s a great match for our company ethos to promote and support the future of the industry.”

Ryan says: “The idea developed over a pint of Guinness after a day volunteering at last year’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush. I was with Alex and Danny talking about how great it would be if there was an exclusive event focussed entirely on content specifically for young greenkeepers. We wanted to encourage networking, improving confidence and sharing experiences to help with their own careers.”

The event, held at Blackwell Golf Club in Bromsgrove where Ryan works, was designed for greenkeepers aged between 16 and 30. Volunteering advice and personal development was provided by Ryan, a career development presentation by Alex and an inspirational chat on the 10 minutes that changed his career was led by Danny in relation to his successful application to the 2018 Young Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award. Machinery demonstrations and an irrigation display were conducted by representatives for Toro machinery, Toro irrigation and TYM tractors from Reesink Turfcare.

Ryan continues: “We all also agreed that not many of us get the chance to have a go on the latest equipment and how great it would be to give attendees the chance to see and operate the latest kit. Jon Lewis from Reesink Turfcare put a list together of the latest Toro and TYM machines available to demonstrate and the machinery station consisted of the Toro Outcross with ProCore 1298 aerator, two pedestrian mowers including the new Toro Greensmaster 1021, a Toro Greensmaster eTriFlex series ride-on mower, and two TYM tractors with various attachments. There was an irrigation display and presentation on different heads, set up and maintenance.”

Reesink’s Pete Newton, who was there on behalf of Toro irrigation, says: “The day had a bit of everything in it and worked really well. We broke down the concept of irrigation, explaining how to set valves, open sprinklers, set their arcs and manage basic irrigation problem solving, while also demonstrating some of Toro’s irrigation products.” While Scott Turner representing TYM tractors says: “It was great to meet the faces of greenkeeping for tomorrow, it represents a promising future for the industry, and we were delighted to be involved.”

Rochelle continues: “We had a range of Toro machinery and TYM tractors there for attendees to try. Giving these young greenkeepers the chance to experience these machines gives a feel for what’s possible with the right equipment and sets a benchmark for quality.”

Ryan concludes: “We are very pleased with how the day went and look forward to planning, and helping others plan, similar events in the future. We were really lucky to have not just such influential players in the industry such as Reesink and Toro, ICL and Syngenta support and sponsor us, but to have such a good turnout of young greenkeepers keen to learn and network. The combination made for an incredibly successful day.”

Scottish turfgrass demo day a success

Scottish turfgrass demo day a success: More than 100 greenkeepers, groundsmen and grounds maintenance contractors from across Scotland attended an amenity demonstration day at Falkirk Tryst Golf Club on 11th March, with those who braved the day’s stormy weather able to see some of the latest golf and sports pitch specific machinery and turf renovation equipment in action.

Featuring a range of machinery demonstrations from a wide selection of industry-leading suppliers, the maiden ‘Scottish Amenity Demonstration Day’ was jointly organised by Germinal GB, Allgrass Turfcare and Campey Turf Care Systems. The event was also sponsored by Cub Cadet, Seddon, Fairways GM, Fleet Line Markers and Steadfast Site Supplies and was kindly hosted by Falkirk Tryst Golf Club.

“Despite the weather’s best efforts to disrupt proceedings, the inaugural Scottish Amenity Demonstration Day was a great success,” explains Alan Thomson, Technical Sales Representative for Germinal in Scotland. “As a group of like-minded suppliers, we recognised that there are no amenity specific events in Scotland where greenkeepers, groundsmen and turf care professionals can talk to multiple manufacturers and suppliers in a single location.

“We therefore worked together to organise the free-to-attend event to give visitors the chance to talk freely with a range of manufacturers about the latest golf and sports-specific grass seed mixtures and to see a selection of cutting-edge turf maintenance machinery – including the latest electrical and emissions-free equipment – in action.”

John Rushforth of Allgrass Turfcare extended a special thank you to Falkirk Tryst Golf Club for hosting the event: “Head greenkeeper, Gary McCandless and his team worked miracles to ensure that, despite heavily waterlogged ground conditions and torrential rain in the days prior to the event, the majority of demonstrations were still able to go ahead.

“Unfortunately, the wet conditions did prevent some machines from operating, but the sheer number of attendees proved there’s a clear appetite for this type of event in Scotland and we are already discussing the potential for future events.”

“Feedback from the event has been extremely positive,” added Richard Heywood of Campey Turf Care. “It was genuinely very gratifying to see so many faces from within the Scottish amenity sector coming together to learn about new developments within the industry and to try out the latest amenity-specific kit. This type of event is as much about networking on a semi-social basis as it is about promoting the latest machinery, and we look forward to organising similar open days in the future.”

Carrick Sports acquires Phil Day Sports

Carrick Sports acquires Phil Day Sports: STRI Group’s construction division, Carrick Sports, has expanded its UK operation by acquiring leading sports turf contractor Phil Day Sports Ltd (PDS).

Due to high demand for Carrick Sports services, the Glasgow-based business has strengthened its UK footprint by taking on Phil Day Sports’ employees, machinery, offices and existing client contracts. It will operate solely under the Carrick Sports Construction brand from January 20th 2020, working within STRI Group’s Plan-Design-Build-Operate model.

The acquisition will allow Carrick Sports to operate from two regional offices in Glasgow and now Worcester, significantly expanding its reach and capabilities across the UK and overseas. Carrick Sports will continue to offer a first class, cutting-edge construction service to create playing surfaces and sports & amenity facilities of the highest standard.

Carrick Sports’ managing director, Stewart Aird, said: “We are really pleased to be welcoming the PDS team to the Carrick Sports and STRI Group. These are exciting times for Carrick Sports. We are growing our global footprint and bringing more world class services and talented people to the sports industry.”

Phil Day Sports operated for over 20 years as a sports turf contractor and specialist in the sports amenity sector. Working alongside a wide range of customers, including Premier League football clubs, county cricket teams, top class rugby and golf clubs and leading independent schools. Existing PDS clients can be assured a smooth transition to Carrick Sports, with all assets, and staff, being retained.

PDS business development manager, Toby Grace, said: “I see the acquisition as a fantastic opportunity to grow the Carrick Sports brand across the UK and beyond. AMIA and Exeter City to host demo day

AMIA and Exeter City to host demo day: Agri Market Insight & Access based in Devon, are the exclusive distributors for the UK and Ireland of Selvatici Amenity Machinery.

The range of machinery offered by Italian Manufacturer Selvatici includes the Aeroking Vertical Drainage Aerators and the Sandqueen Sand Dispensers. Selvatici have been manufacturing in Italy for over 100 years near Bologna.  They have been manufacturing Professional Vertical Drainage Aerators for several decades which are now re-entering the UK and Irish markets after originally selling a number of units during the 90s and early 2000s.  Since then there have been a lot of innovations and improvements to the machines such as a new and more robust gearbox, completely renewed bodywork and a double lever for the front roller which ensures an easier lift.

Selvatici manufacture 9 different models of the Aeroking Vertical Drainage Aerator ranging in sizes from a working width of 1.2m up to 2.5m with a good variety of additional extras such as self-levelling conveyors for cores when having used a hollow tine option.
