Durapost fencing system provides alternative to timber

Durapost fencing system provides alternative to timber: Recently at a property in Leeds, a failing timber fencing system has been replaced with a range of high performance DuraPost products. Incorporating fence posts, Urban Slatted Composite fence panels and an Aluminium Gate, the holistic solution from Birkdale Sales provided all the necessary aesthetic and performance requirements.

While timber fencing can look attractive initially, it inevitably begins to rot, weaken and deteriorate over time. This was the case at the property of Mr Edwards, whose ageing timber fencing was losing its appeal and beginning to fail – so a replacement was needed.

“We wanted something that would look neater and not require much maintenance. DuraPost by Birkdale seemed to tick all the boxes,” said Mr Edwards. “The slim and tidy galvanised steel posts in anthracite grey give me more space in my garden and come with up to a 25-year guarantee – although it is likely they will last much longer. I then opted for the DuraPost® Urban Slatted Composite fence panels in the Natural colour option. It looks just like cedar, but has greater longevity, thanks to its ability to resist mould and rot.”

Birkdale’s Urban Slatted Composite fence panels are manufactured from a combination of materials, including rice husks – a natural bi-product from the rice industry – which accounts for 55% of the panel. Recycled HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is also incorporated into the design. These robust panels are incredibly strong and wind tested to high speeds.

Steve Ward from Silver Fern Fencing installed the new system. “Thanks to the low weight and slimness of the posts, we could carry and install them easily and quickly. They are so much better to work with than concrete systems, which are far harder to carry and install. The panel boards were then installed horizontally. I always recommend DuraPost® to my customers and will continue to do so.”

Once the project was finished, Mr Edwards was delighted, “Compared to the original timber system, our new fencing is worlds apart. The post works incredibly well with the Urban Slatted Panel to provide fencing that is neat and tidy, very strong and does not require maintenance. All the products in the system helped us to achieve exactly what we set out to do.”

Robertson fencing expands with Doosan

Robertson fencing expands with Doosan: Robertson Fencing Ltd is an agricultural/forestry contracting company, based in Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire in Scotland. The company works with forestry companies, land managers and highland estates combining its diverse range of services to deliver projects safely and to a high standard.

Woodland creation and establishment works are Robertson Fencing’s speciality, applying a collaborative approach to fencing and forestry ground preparation operations, increasing efficiency and collaboration, whilst reducing supervision and on site management.

In the last three years, Robertson Fencing has taken delivery of eight new Doosan excavators from Balgownie, the local Authorised Doosan Dealer, based at Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. The new Doosan excavators include two DX160LC-5 HT 16 tonne high track crawler excavators, five DX140LC-5 14 tonne crawler excavators and a DX63-3 6 tonne mini-excavator. The arrival of the new Doosan excavators, doubling the fleet of crawler excavators, has helped Robertson Fencing to continue to expand to meet the demands of the buoyant forestry sector and ambitious woodland creation targets in Scotland.

Excellence All Round

Managing Director, Rab Robertson, said: “The first Doosan machine we purchased was a DX140LC-5 recommended by David Moir at Balgownie and the excellent performance of this machine convinced us to purchase the rest of the Doosan machines. In doing so, we have not only switched our favoured brand to Doosan, we have changed from a dealer that was 25 minutes away to one that is two hours away, but Balgownie more than makes up for it in terms of support for our business – I have never seen quality service and back-up like that offered by Balgownie – it is amazing!”

The high performance of the DX140LC-5 crawler excavator includes a 5% increase in engine power and 4% greater torque over the previous version of this machine. In addition, traction has been boosted with an increase in drawbar pull of about 18% and front lifting capacity has been increased on average by 10% and side capacities are 12.5% higher. Complementing these figures, the fuel consumption in the DX140LC-5 has been lowered by 3% compared to the previous generation excavator.

The continuing expansion into the forestry ground preparation sector at Robertson Fencing provides a perfect fit to complement the company’s established fencing operations, to provide customers with a truly turnkey choice when appointing contractors for forestry establishment projects.

Rab Robertson added: “Our operators have been impressed by the comfort and reliability of all of the Doosan excavators. The new Doosan High Track excavators offer a specialised design for the forestry industry with a high ground clearance and a bigger, stronger undercarriage. They have been outstanding in our work in restock mounding for clients like Forestry and Land Scotland, RTS Forestry, Tilhill and Scottish Woodlands.”

The DX160LC-5 HT excavator combines the upper structure from the DX140LC-5 with a heavier-duty 18 tonne class high track undercarriage, increasing the ground clearance from 410 mm in the DX140LC-5 to an impressive 615 mm. In its standard configuration, the digging depth of the DX160LC-5 HT is 5355 mm, the digging height is 8940 mm and the digging reach is 8080 mm.

Doosan also offers the larger DX180LC-5 HT High Track model, which is an enhanced version of the company’s DX180LC-5 excavator, incorporating a reinforced structure and a carefully re-engineered, high performance braking system, offering the same ground clearance of 615 mm as the DX160LC-5 HT, compared to 460 mm in the standard DX180LC-5.

The Doosan High Track models are designed to meet the needs of customers requiring a combination of higher ground clearance, a reinforced track frame and a strong traction system with reinforced upper rollers for work in harsh environments and on projects where larger travelling distances are involved. The High Track models are particularly suited for constructing roadways, mounding, earthmoving and other duties in the forestry industry, where the higher ground clearance, durable travelling system and the traction force allow them to move with ease over rough terrain, negotiate obstacles such as fallen tree trunks and to pull trailers loaded with wood.

The DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT are powered by the Perkins 1204F engine, which combines reduced fuel consumption with the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement. The Perkins 1204F engine provides an output of 81.6 kW (109 HP) and 94.9 kW (127 HP) at 2000 rpm, respectively, in the DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT.

Fencing Panel Proves Popular

Fencing Panel Proves Popular: Garden owners have made it clear that they value peace and quiet when spending time outside, with the popularity of the panel increasing rapidly across the country, with sales so far in 2018 double what they were in 2017. The panels are designed in a clever manner to reduce nuisance sounds such as barking dogs, road traffic and noisy neighbours by as much as eight times, whilst still offering style and affordability.

This is the first DIY acoustic panel on the market, and is readily available via national retailer’s websites for delivery directly to consumer’s homes. The panel can be fitted as a replacement between existing fence posts or as a new fence run. Tests show that the panels can achieve a reduction in the noise level of as much as 30dB.  Each successive reduction of 10 decibels is equal to halving the noise level, so it is easy to see that they can have a very dramatic effect. It is no surprise, therefore, that the product scooped Best Garden Landscaping Product prize at the Garden Industry Manufacturer’s Association (GIMA) Awards in 2017.

Fencing Panel Proves Popular

The popularity of the panel doesn’t just come down to its noise reducing performance, though. It is also blessed with great looks that belie its hidden capabilities. Each panel is 180cm high and 183cm wide with the boards mounted vertically (making it a standard 6ft panel size).  However, the panel looks equally as attractive with the boards running horizontally with which arrangement it is 180cm wide so can replace standard sized European panels.

The thick (17mm) interlocking tongue and groove boards are smooth planed and moulded into a triangulated shape.  These are mounted within a 45mm thick rebated frame to ensure there are no gaps for noise to pass through.

Each panel is FSC certified and carries a 15-year anti-rot guarantee.

“This fencing brings peace and quiet plus privacy back to gardens subjected to unwanted noise,” says Nicola Simpson, head of marketing for Forest Garden. “The success of the fencing since its launch is a reflection of the uniqueness and innovative design of this product. It offers an affordable and ready to use solution to reducing noise pollution, which has really struck a chord with the public.”

The panel retails at £119.99 and is are available at selected stockists nationwide.
