Colliers advisors complete fertiliser assessment: All of our Collier Turf Care FACTS Qualified Advisors (FQA) have again successfully passed the fertiliser annual assessment examination.

Along with their BASIS qualification and membership of the BASIS Professional Register, this ensures that they are up to date and able to offer sound professional advice on both chemicals and fertilisers for the turf and amenity industry, and entitles them to remain on the register of FACTS Qualified Advisors. Those staff that are not currently BASIS registered or FACTS Qualified Advisors are undergoing our in-depth formal training scheme, and until qualified they are fully supported by the companies FQAs.

New fertiliser recycles battery waste: Battery waste is helping greenkeepers in the UK to improve the health of their turf, thanks to the launch of a new liquid fertiliser product.

ZM-Grow™ extracts zinc, manganese and sulphur from used alkaline batteries to create a unique fertiliser for a range of crops, including amenity turf.

With limited recycling options for alkaline batteries, the process is not only helping greenkeepers to be more sustainable, but also reduces the risk of toxic substances contaminating groundwater and the environment.

Johnny Beck, Agronomist at Agrovista Amenity, said: “In excess of 10 billion alkaline batteries are manufactured in the world each year, and just one battery can contaminate more than 160,000 litres of drinking water, should it not be disposed of correctly.

“ZM-Grow is making a real difference in overcoming this problem. It applies unique ‘clean’ technology developed by Tracegrow in Finland and is thought to be the only process that can extract micronutrients from batteries to the necessary purity for fertilisers.

“Following trials at STRI over the summer, we’ve been able to launch the product at golf courses across the country, providing our customers with a highly ecological, organic fertiliser. Turf nutrition is so important, so this product really is a double win!”

Maintaining optimum levels of micronutrients is vital in promoting the growth of strong, healthy, disease-free turf. Manganese contributes to improving nitrogen uptake and photosynthesis, whereas zinc boosts cell elongation and sugar consumption.

Combining these micronutrients with protein-building sulphur gives greenkeepers a ground-breaking product that promotes a resilient and healthy sward.

Leigh Powell, Course Manager of Windlesham Golf Club in Surrey, said: “After conducting soil tests, we found that our root zones were consistently deficient in micronutrients, with manganese being particularly low.

Germinal’s Anti-Stress Fertiliser

Germinal’s Anti-Stress Fertiliser: No matter how naturally resistant a grass cultivar is to diseases such as fusarium, an unhealthy or nutrient deficient sward won’t be able to withstand the disease pressures associated with the onset of wetter and colder autumn conditions. 

Greenkeepers are therefore advised to remember that feeding the sward goes beyond applying the main three macro-nutrients: N, P & K, and should include additional micro-nutrients, namely magnesium and iron, which can bolster tolerance to disease and cold conditions.

Germinal's Anti-Stress Fertiliser

Germinal’s specialist G13 Protekt and G14 Alleviate Fe fertilisers are formulated to provide the necessary nutrients to protect grass swards at crucial times such as during the onset of cooler autumn and winter conditions.

G13 ProteKt is a 3-0-22 (+3% Fe) anti-stress fertiliser. Containing 22% potash and 3% iron, it can be used during the autumn and winter to harden turf, heighten sward colour and prevent disease attack. Used at this time of year, G13 ProteKt enhances wear tolerance, protects the sward from frost damage and enables quicker recovery in the subsequent spring.

G13 ProteKt can also be applied in the spring and summer when its high potassium content aids transpiration control in dry periods and fortifies the drought tolerance of grass plants.

G14 Alleviate Fe is a 4-0-10 (+8% Fe) fertiliser which is ideal for protecting high value turf areas such as sports fields, golf greens and tees and bowling greens throughout the growing season, but especially during the autumn and winter months. G14 Alleviate Fe contains magnesium, a vital component of chlorophyll, which helps to maintain good metabolism of energy for healthy plant growth. Its high iron content improve resistance to disease and ensures quick greening throughout the growing season without causing any intense flushes of growth. G14 Alleviate Fe also helps to control and inhibit moss.

Fast Grow Fertiliser Expansion: Fertiliser entrepreneur and founder of the Fast Grow Fertiliser brand, Shane Walsh has announced the expansion of his business into the professional pitch care market in Ireland and the UK.

Established as one of Ireland’s foremost suppliers of seaweed fertiliser, The Fast Grow Fertiliser Company already has a significant presence amongst Irish and UK garden retailers. Fast Grow Seaweed Plant Fertiliser is particularly effective on pitches where there is a heavy concentration of sand to aid drainage. Artificial fertilisers are typically leached through the soil quickly leaving the grass vulnerable to attacks from pest and diseases which in the past would have been treated with chemical sprays. Now with the reduction in the use of pesticides pitch care is more problematic. However using Fast Grow will improve the soil to the point where the grass will be healthy and strong and less susceptible to pest and diseases.
