Nominations Open For IOG Awards: Nominations are now open for the 2018 Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Industry Awards, with 21 categories of entry recognising the passion, dedication and challenges faced by grounds staff in both grassroots and professional sports at clubs of every size and from all areas of the UK.

This year’s awards – the 10th in the series and being held on October 31 at the Hilton Metropole hotel at the Birmingham NEC, on the evening of the first day of SALTEX – includes the introduction of new awards and enhancements to existing categories.

To celebrate the anniversary, the IOG is planning some exciting changes to the awards event which has continually grown in status for acknowledging the achievements of volunteer and professional grounds teams, as well as community clubs and national stadia.

Commenting, IOG chief executive Geoff Webb says: “We are planning some exciting developments for the awards presentations to mark the 10th anniversary. We have added new categories and enhanced the entry criteria – opening up the awards to more potential winners from all sectors of society – at all levels of the sporting spectrum.

“The awards continue to provide the only national stage for the achievements of everyone involved in groundscare across all levels of sport – whether professional teams at stadia or, indeed, the lone volunteer groundsman at a small village club.

“Importantly, applications to every category are encouraged from Scotland, Ireland and Wales, as well as England.”

He adds: “These are the only awards for groundsmen that are judged by groundsmen, and we are lucky to have a dedicated group of volunteer judges with a range of backgrounds that encompass the diversity of the industry and profession today.

“Please take the time to nominate as you must know many deserving candidates and great examples of sports turf management at every level.”

Drainage Key For Golf Protection: With the UK’s increasingly erratic weather having a detrimental impact on golf, Aggregates Industries’ has stated that effective drainage is now more important than ever before when it comes to the successful design and management of golf courses.

According to a recent report, golf is facing an increase in unplayable holes, winter course closures and disruption to professional tournaments due to increased rainfall, all of which are a growing concern for the sport.

Extreme weather including wetter winters are also causing waterlogging and disease to grass and greens, the report added. As a result, the Greater Glasgow area alone has seen a 20% reduction in playing time on golf courses over the last decade.

Steve Curley, general manager for Lytag at Aggregate Industries, a leading supplier of building materials, comments: “The UK has seen six of the seven wettest years on record since 2000 and record-breaking wet winters in 2014 and 2015 – which is clearly having a damaging impact on golf and a growing concern for golf courses up and down the country.

“For golf clubs looking to – literally – weather the storm, having an effective drainage system in place is now considered paramount for protecting a green and ensuring playability in all weather conditions.”

According to Aggregate Industries, core to a superior drainage system is the use of secondary aggregates such as Sportag®, an innovative lightweight solution made from Lytag featuring a unique rounded shape and material properties that makes it ideal for land drainage applications.

Reducing the risk of flooding, Sportag is able to transmit water up to 10 times faster than gravel, which means it is particularly suited to golf courses, including slit trenches, gravel banding and Shelton Systems as well as fairways where firm dry surfaces are critical. What’s more, the incredibly sustainable solution’s 40% void ratio helps aid longevity, improving aeration and allowing roots to penetrate further.

Proving its credentials during recent works at Woburn Golf Club, Sportag was installed within trenches 25mm wide, spaced 2m apart and at a depth of 300mm. A quick and simple installation process, the course was immediately available for use, damage to the course was minimal, therefore keeping disruption to a minimum.

Outlaw For Aspiring Gamekeepers

Outlaw For Aspiring Gamekeepers: Two lucky kids, Arthur and Belle Rhodes arrived home from school one day to find a big surprise. National Gamekeeper Organisation member’s wife, Louise and dad Jamie had purchased tickets for their children and entered the NGO Summer Prize Draw launched at The Game Fair. The star prize was a Polaris Outlaw 50 Junior quad bike, which is designed for children over the age of six, and ideal for budding gamekeepers.

The winning ticket, which cost just £1, was drawn at the Countryfile Live Show at Blenheim Palace. To their delight Louise and Jamie Rhodes were the winners. The Polaris Outlaw, which has a RRP of £1,999, was presented to them by Richard Coleby, Polaris’ District Sales Manager.

“We’re thrilled”, said Jamie “this has been an extremely welcome surprise to have won this bike, we have had a smaller quad bike for a couple years now for our two children Arthur and Belle to use but it is now too small and we were looking at replacing it with a new one. Both Arthur and Belle were so excited to take delivery of the bike. Unfortunately they were at school when it was delivered but it was an excellent surprise for them when they arrived home!”

New Dealer For TYM Network: TYM Tractors has welcomed KJ Stoneman & Co Ltd in Devon to its dealer network, and in doing so is continuing its healthy network expansion of 2017 into 2018.

The appointment extends TYM’s coverage in mid and north Devon and provides the family-run agricultural dealer’s customer base of landscape and amenity customers, such as private estates, small holdings and farms, with a comprehensive compact tractor range.
