Three alternative cutting decks for Burnham Beeches

Three alternative cutting decks for Burnham Beeches: Burnham Beeches Golf Club is located in the Thames Valley in south Buckinghamshire, 25 miles west of London, and is one of the latest clubs to take a package of Ventrac equipment. Delivered by local dealer, RT Machinery Ltd, the package includes a Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor unit together with a three different cutting decks and a trencher attachment.

Now in his 24th year at the club, Lee Bishop is the Course Manager where he leads a team of seven greenkeeping staff. Later this year the team will be expanding with the addition of a further experienced greenkeeper, an apprentice and two summer staff. He began his career at the nearby Harry Colt-designed Stoke Park Golf Club in 1992, before moving to Burnham Beeches as an assistant greenkeeper back in 1999. He then made the amazing leap from assistant greenkeeper to his current position of Course Manager in 2006.

“We are an established parkland course, now over 130-years old, and situated mainly on clay,” he said. “Therefore, we have a requirement to manage the trees and woodland margins that line the fairways and frame the greens. We can be wet after heavy rainfall.

“I first saw the Ventrac on social media and then I was invited by a very good friend of mine, Stuart Langhorn, the Course Director at Beaconsfield Golf Club to see the machine that he had bought. I was extremely impressed and contacted our local dealer, RT Machinery to arrange a demonstration. The management team were so impressed and we purchased the package within a couple of weeks of the demonstration!

“The Ventrac is so versatile that we purchased three different cutting attachments in the package; the Tough Cut deck is superb for managing our woodland margins; it takes down brambles and young saplings with ease and this helps to keep up the pace of play, making it easier for our golfers to find their balls after a wayward shot.

“The Contour deck is articulated at both ends and that makes it ideal for bunker surrounds and tee banks, but it has been a godsend during the winter months as we have been using it on our fairways when it is too wet to cut with our fairway mowers. We can get out when it’s wet and put some definition down; the members have noticed and we’ve had many favourable comments. The Triple Cylinder unit will be used for the perimeter fairway cut and this has enabled us to remove a dedicated machine from our fleet.

“The Trencher has been outstanding this winter. As I said earlier we can be wet after heavy rain, but the trencher enables us to get out and drain the wetter areas when we want. We are not reliant on contractors, we can do it in-house and in a timely fashion. I would recommend not severing power cables, though; National Grid are not too happy when that happens!

“Finally, a shout-out for Price Turfcare, RT Machinery and Tom Stidder. Price Turfcare, the importer, have been so reactive and professional to work with; RT Machinery are renowned for the way they treat customers and we can certainly support that and Tom Stidder, who did the installation training was extremely thorough and knowledgeable. That’s formidable support, all round.”

Using Attraxor for growth regulation

Using Attraxor for growth regulation: A Scotland based golf club has explained the key benefits of using Attraxor for growth regulation and the suppression of Poa annua.

Head greenkeeper, John Cunningham, based at the Isle of Skye Golf Club, explains that he has been using Attraxor for the past two years on golf greens and surrounds.

Officially formed in 1988, the Isle of Skye golf club boasts an 18 hole course across 9 greens, nestled at the foot of the Red Cuillins. The club welcomes golfers of all ages and abilities to visit and enjoy the wonderful scenery it has to offer.

John discussed the reason he began using Attraxor at the Isle of Sky Golf Club: “I began using Attraxor mainly as a growth regulator, and I believe it is the best growth regulator on the market. Its longevity out performs other competitors.”

Attraxor has been shown to effectively regulate growth of managed amenity turf. The active substance, Prohexadione-calcium, inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, which results in a reduction of turf height and turf biomass. Root growth is also promoted through use of Attraxor whilst turf colour and quality are maintained.

John confirmed: “Using Attraxor has led to lower maintenance levels across the course, resulting in a reduced need to cut and roll.”

Attraxor also limits the spread of annual meadow grass, Poa annua, by reducing seed-head production and physiological weakening. John states: “Attraxor has obliterated Poa annua seed heads. It’s absolutely fantastic and very quick acting.”

John has also noticed that there has also been improvement in grass quality: “Since using Attraxor the sward has thickened, providing a smoother, more uniform putting surface”.

John was very impressed with the results from using Attraxor compared to other PGR products: “I have previously used other alternatives, and none work as well as Attraxor. Its longevity also outperforms other competitors.

“Using Attraxor has reduced costs, there’s no doubt about it. The growth regulation results in less cutting and less rolling. It’s a win-win all round.”

Green-tech a partner for Recycling Scheme

Green-tech a partner for Recycling Scheme: Rainbow Professional has recently launched the Rainbow Recycling Scheme in partnership with Green-tech and its other wholesalers and recycling partners to recycle any old PVC spiral or PVC vole guard.

Head of Green-tech Sales, Dean Jackson comments, “Green-tech has been proactive in their stance to reduce plastic in the landscaping and forestry industries, and we have an extensive portfolio of biodegradable and environmentally friendly tree protection materials to offer our customers choice.  It is not currently feasible to eradicate plastic totally, but we can do the next best thing – we can use recycled plastic and in partnership with Rainbow Professional, we can collect and recycle old tree spirals and give them a new life rather than leave in the environment or commit to landfill.”

For the past 25 years, Rainbow Professional has been the only tree guard manufacturer using 100% recycled materials. This is estimated to have saved at least 2 million kgs of carbon every year, 50million kg in total to-date and they have avoided virgin plastics from entering the environment.

The Rainbow Spiral Recycling Scheme is available to any professional end-user. It is simple to administer and affordable. Bags can be ordered from Green-tech or direct from Rainbow.  Once full they will be collected and transported to Rainbow’s manufacturing facility in Hull where they will be shredded and washed if needed. Depending on the quality, they may be immediately usable to process into new spirals, processed further into pellets, or used as in-fill for window frames. As Rainbow use 100% recycled materials, they have a local network of recycling partners that find the best possible outlet for each waste material.

PVC is one of the most recyclable polymers in the world; it can be used up to 9 times. Even in cases where the spiral has lost some of its properties, it can still be useful for some applications and in cases where further recycling isn’t possible, the waste materials are used to turn into energy.

Jackson continues, “We are delighted to be working with Rainbow Professional to deliver this scheme. It is recommended to remove hedge spirals between September and March when hedge plants are bare of leaves and the bird nesting season has finished. For collections of 6-15 bags (each bag will hold approximately 700 spirals), the scheme will run from April to September, outside of the planting season. However, for collection of over 15 bags, the scheme will run all year round.

Pierre Talpe from Rainbow adds,” As a manufacturer we are taking a responsible approach to protecting trees and for trying to reduce carbon in the environment by encouraging recycling and use of recycled products.  We are delighted to have Green-tech onboard with us. They are a major supplier of tree protection materials and are well respected in the industry. Their values to sustainability are aligned with our own and we are proud to be able to ‘close the loop’ from supply to collection to recycling to supply once more.”

Green-tech is running a number of webinars to explain the scheme and the process in detail.  They will be free to attend and will take around 30 minutes. The first is being held on Tuesday 25th April webinar. To reserve your place use the following link – https://bit.ly/41iMvPh
